What changing the setting actually does
The Side button has separate actions for a short press, a double press and a long press. This fix changes only the Long press assignment. Selecting Power off menu makes a press-and-hold open the screen containing power controls rather than launching Bixby or another assistant.

It does not remove Bixby from the phone. Samsung’s US support guidance says Bixby cannot be deleted entirely through the options covered there, but the Side button can be remapped so the assistant no longer appears when you hold the button.

Follow these steps on a Galaxy phone with a combined Side button
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Side button. On some software versions, the same control may be described as the Side key.
- Under the Long press heading, select Power off menu.
- Press and hold the Side button once to confirm that the power menu appears instead of Bixby.
There is no accessory, replacement part or paid service involved; this is a built-in configuration option. If your screen uses slightly different wording or places the controls differently, use the model-specific layout shown in the phone’s Side button settings. Samsung explicitly notes that menus can differ by device and software version.

One UI 7: why Gemini may appear instead of Bixby
On Galaxy devices covered by Samsung Australia’s One UI 7 guidance, the default long-press action changed to Gemini. That does not change the solution: the assistant assigned to the button can still be replaced from the same Settings > Advanced features > Side button > Long press screen.
Choose Power off menu when you want a press-and-hold to show power controls. Choose Bixby if you deliberately want Bixby back as the long-press action. The available assistant choices depend on the phone and installed software, so a One UI 7 phone may show Gemini where an older model showed Bixby.

Identify which button design your phone has
Before troubleshooting, determine whether your device has a combined Side button or an older, dedicated Bixby button. The physical design determines which instructions apply.

If your phone has a separate button marked or positioned for Bixby, do not assume the combined-button procedure will appear. Samsung’s older-device article explains that button design and its different behavior.

After selecting Power off menu, make a normal press-and-hold while watching the display. The expected result is a power-control screen, not an assistant panel or voice interface. You do not need to complete a shutdown to verify the assignment; simply confirm that the power menu is the screen that appears, then dismiss it using the on-screen option.
A short press should continue to perform its ordinary screen-lock or wake function, because the procedure changes the long-press action only. If a double press is configured for another feature, that separate assignment is not part of this fix.
Ways to open the power menu if an assistant is still assigned
If you have not changed the long-press assignment, or your phone does not expose the expected Side button option, Samsung identifies two other routes to the power menu:

- Open the Quick panel and use its power control.
- Press Side button + Volume Down together.
These alternatives are useful when an assistant still appears after a hold, when you are checking whether the physical buttons work, or when your model uses a different button layout. They do not change the assignment; they only provide another way to reach power controls. Samsung lists them alongside the remapping instructions in its US support material.

Troubleshoot when Bixby or Gemini still opens
The Side button menu is missing
First check the physical buttons. A phone with an older dedicated Bixby button may not expose the same combined Side button controls. Samsung’s device-specific instructions are the appropriate reference for that design: How to customize the Side Key on Galaxy phone.
If the phone does have a combined Side button, look under Settings > Advanced features for Side button. The exact menu name and position can vary with the model and software version, so an older screenshot may not match your display.
The menu appears, but there is no “Power off menu” choice
Samsung does not promise an identical list for every Galaxy model. Confirm that you opened the Long press section rather than the controls for a short or double press. If the power-menu choice still is not listed, your model or software build may expose a narrower set of actions; use the Quick panel or Side-plus-Volume-Down method for power controls instead.
The phone opens Gemini rather than Bixby
That behavior is consistent with the One UI 7 default described by Samsung Australia. It is still the long-press assignment that needs changing. Return to the Side button settings and select Power off menu; the assistant’s name does not alter the navigation path.

The phone opens Bixby after you selected the power menu
Reopen the settings page and verify that Power off menu is selected under Long press, not merely highlighted under another button action. Then test the hold again. If the device has both a dedicated Bixby button and a combined Side button, make sure you are holding the button whose settings you changed.
You want power controls immediately
Use the Quick panel or press Side button + Volume Down. These routes are documented by Samsung for phones where the Side button’s long press is assigned to an assistant.

The table describes the outcomes Samsung documents; your phone may show fewer choices because availability depends on its model and software version.
Dedicated Bixby-button phones: what is different
Some older Galaxy devices have a separate physical Bixby button instead of combining Bixby access with the Side button. Samsung’s older Side Key guidance says holding that dedicated button activates Bixby Voice. On those phones, the newer Side button path may not control the dedicated button at all.

Look at the button you are pressing when the assistant opens. If it is a separate Bixby control, consult the older-device instructions and the options presented by that model. The combined-button procedure applies only when the phone’s settings identify the control as Side button or Side key.
What this fix does not change
- It does not uninstall Bixby or erase the assistant from the phone.
- It does not change the short-press behavior of the Side button.
- It does not necessarily change a double-press shortcut.
- It does not make every Galaxy phone use the same labels or menu layout.
- It does not alter the behavior of a separate, dedicated Bixby button on older devices.
Those limits explain why two Galaxy phones can show different screens while both follow Samsung’s documented button-customization approach.
Frequently asked questions
Can I completely delete Bixby?
Not through the Side button options described in Samsung’s US guide. The supported change is to remap the long press to the Power off menu.
Why did my phone start opening Gemini?
Samsung Australia’s One UI 7 guidance identifies Gemini as the newer default long-press action. Change the Long press selection to Power off menu if you want power controls instead.

No. The documented change is a built-in setting, and the alternative power-menu routes use the phone’s existing buttons or Quick panel.
Will these instructions work on every Galaxy phone?
No single layout is guaranteed. Samsung says choices vary by model and software version, and older phones with a dedicated Bixby button behave differently.
Can I switch back to Bixby later?
On models that list Bixby as an option, return to the Long press setting and select Bixby.
