How to Stop Targeted Ads Based on the Videos You Watch

To reduce ads based on your YouTube viewing, turn off personalized ads in Google My Ad Center, then pause or delete YouTube watch and search history. Review cookie and advertising controls on your browser, phone and connected TV, and use a reputable browser blocker if you watch on the web. These steps reduce interest-based targeting; they do not make YouTube ad-free. YouTube says its paid memberships provide an ad-free experience.

Why a video you watched can influence an ad

YouTube says ads may be personalized from your Google Ads settings, YouTube history and account status, or delivered as non-personalized ads. The content of videos you watch can be used as an ad signal whether you are signed in or not. That is why watching several videos about a product or hobby can be followed by related advertising.

YouTube also says search and watch history can be used to show relevant and useful ads. Google describes a cross-site example: if you watch videos of guitar players on YouTube, you might later see an ad for guitar lessons on a site that uses Google ad products. The activity involved is not limited to YouTube: Google lists sites visited, apps used, searches and location among possible inputs to ad personalization.

Turning off personalization changes how ads are selected, not whether an ad slot exists. Contextual advertising can still use the page, video or general audience instead of your account interests.

What each control actually changes

Control Scope Effect on targeting Do ads still appear? Possible side effects
Personalized ads in Google My Ad Center Your Google Account wherever you are signed in Stops Google from using the personalized-ads setting for interest-based selection Yes; Google says they will most likely be less relevant to your interests Fewer ads based on your account interests, but no ad-free YouTube experience
YouTube watch and search history controls Your YouTube and Google activity records Removes or stops new history signals used for ads and recommendations Yes Recommendations can become less tailored, and history-based resume-watching can be lost
Browser cookies and history controls The browser and its stored activity Reduces some cross-site tracking and locally stored signals Yes Sites may forget sign-ins or preferences after cookies are removed
Phone advertising and privacy settings The individual phone and its apps Limits device-level ad personalization Yes App experiences can be less personalized
Connected-TV or streaming-device privacy settings The television or streaming device Limits signals collected from that device Yes Device recommendations and preferences may be less tailored
Browser ad or tracker blocker Usually the browser where the extension or setting is active Can block some ad and tracking requests Often; the FTC says no blocker guarantees removal of all ads or tracking Results vary by site and browser
“Why this ad” or an ad-menu block control One displayed ad Explains that ad and may hide that specific ad where the option is offered Yes; other ads can be shown It is not a global opt-out
YouTube paid membership Your YouTube account, subject to the membership’s terms and availability Does not merely reduce personalization; YouTube describes paid memberships as ad-free Not on YouTube under the ad-free membership terms Requires an active paid membership

Step 1: Turn off personalized ads in Google My Ad Center

  1. Open Google My Ad Center. Use the Google account that you use for YouTube. The control applies anywhere that account is signed in, not only in the browser where you changed it.
  2. Find the personalized-ads setting. Switch personalized ads off and confirm the change if Google asks.
  3. Check the result before leaving. Google states that you will still see ads, but they will most likely be less relevant to your interests. This is a targeting change, not an ad-removal switch.

If you use more than one Google account, repeat the check while signed in to each account that is used on YouTube, a phone or a TV. A setting on one account does not change another account’s settings.

Step 2: Pause and delete YouTube history

My Ad Center controls the ad-personalization setting; history controls remove another important source of signals. You can manage this data in Your Data in YouTube or in My Activity.

  1. Open Your Data in YouTube or My Activity. Sign in to the account whose viewing activity you want to change.
  2. Pause YouTube watch history. Pausing stops new viewing activity from being added as a history signal until you turn it back on. Videos can still play while history is paused.
  3. Pause YouTube search history. This prevents new searches from being retained as search-history signals.
  4. Delete existing watch and search history. Use the available date range or deletion controls. Deleting removes past records; pausing prevents new records from being added.
  5. Review other activity controls. Google’s account controls can permanently delete activity tied to the account, including activity from sites visited, apps used, searches and location. Remove only the categories you are comfortable losing.

History affects more than advertising. YouTube uses it for recommendations and for features such as resuming a video. After deletion or a pause, recommendations can be less tailored and previously watched positions may no longer be available. If you want those features back, you can resume history later; deleting old records cannot be undone through the history controls.

Step 3: Reduce tracking in the browser you use for YouTube

Account settings do not erase signals stored by a browser or collected by other sites. The FTC recommends deleting cookies and clearing browsing and search history, then reviewing the browser’s privacy controls.

  1. Clear cookies and site data. Use your browser’s privacy or history menu and remove the stored data you want to reset. Cookies can contain sign-in state and preferences, so expect to sign in again on some sites.
  2. Clear browsing and search history. This removes local records and can reduce some browser-based signals. It does not delete activity already saved to your Google Account; use My Activity for that.
  3. Review cookie controls. Restrict third-party cookies or cross-site tracking where your browser offers those options. The exact label differs by browser and operating system.
  4. Check every browser profile. A privacy change in one browser or profile does not automatically apply to another one.

Private browsing alone is not a complete solution. The FTC cautions that private browsing does not prevent websites from seeing online activity. It mainly limits what is retained locally after the private session ends.

Step 4: Check your phone and connected TV

Phone and tablet

Review the operating system’s privacy or advertising menu and turn off device-level ad personalization when that option is available. Also check the YouTube app account: the app can be signed in even when a browser is not. A phone setting limits device-level signals; it does not replace the Google Account and YouTube history steps.

Smart TV and streaming device

Open the television or streaming device’s privacy menu and review advertising, viewing-data and personalization controls. Confirm which Google or YouTube account is signed in on the device. Shared TVs often retain a different account or viewing history from the one used on a phone, so changing your phone alone may not change ads on the TV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These device settings can reduce data collection and personalization, but ads can still be selected from the video or the broader viewing context.

Step 5: Use a browser ad or tracker blocker carefully

If you watch YouTube in a desktop browser, a reputable ad or tracker blocker can reduce some browser-delivered ads and tracking requests. Install it from your browser’s established extension store, keep it updated and review what permissions it requests.

The FTC warns that blockers do not necessarily block every ad or every tracking method. They also do not change account history stored by Google, and they generally do not cover the YouTube app or a television. Treat a blocker as an additional browser-layer control, not a replacement for My Ad Center, history deletion and device privacy settings.

Step 6: Investigate one ad without changing everything

When an ad appears, open its “Why this ad” explanation or the ad menu. Google may show why it was selected and, where available, let you block that specific advertiser or ad. This is useful for understanding an unexpected ad and hiding one unwanted creative, but it is a per-ad action. It does not turn off personalized ads globally and does not stop future ads from other advertisers.

Why related ads can continue after you opt out

The video itself is still a signal

YouTube says ads can be based on video content whether or not you are signed in. A video about cameras, running shoes or guitar playing can therefore be associated with contextual advertising even after account-based personalization is disabled.

You are seeing a non-personalized ad

Non-personalized does not mean random or absent. An advertiser can choose an audience or a placement, and YouTube can show an ad that fits the video or the general context without using your individual watch history.

Another account or device remains signed in

My Ad Center follows the account that is signed in. A separate account on a family browser, phone or TV can have different ad settings and history. Check the account shown in the YouTube profile menu on each device where the ads appear.

Other activity is still available

Turning off YouTube history does not automatically erase every activity category connected to the account. Google’s controls cover activity such as searches, sites visited, apps used and location. Review those categories in My Activity if you want a broader reduction in account-based signals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cookies and local data remain

A browser can retain cookies and other local data after you change an account setting. Clearing that data and reviewing cross-site tracking controls addresses the browser layer, while the account controls address Google’s stored activity.

Choose the least disruptive setup

You want fewer ads related to your interests

Turn off personalized ads in My Ad Center, then pause or delete YouTube watch and search history. Keep history paused only if you accept weaker recommendations and the loss of history-based resume features.

You want privacy on a shared TV

Check the account signed in on the TV, review the device’s privacy menu and avoid leaving a personal account active on a shared profile. Make the account and device changes separately because one does not automatically change the other.

You want to reduce browser tracking

Clear cookies and browsing history, restrict cross-site cookies where possible and add a reputable blocker. Remember that these measures apply mainly to that browser and do not guarantee that all ads or tracking disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want no YouTube ads

Targeting controls are not enough for this goal. YouTube describes its paid memberships as providing an ad-free experience. Availability and terms depend on the membership and region, so check the offer shown in your own YouTube account.

A practical troubleshooting checklist

  • Confirm personalized ads are off in the Google account currently signed in to YouTube.
  • Check whether watch and search history are paused and whether old entries were deleted.
  • Look at My Activity for other categories, such as searches, sites visited, apps and location, that you also want to remove or limit.
  • Verify the account on the phone, browser, app and connected TV where the ad appears.
  • Clear cookies and browsing data in the affected browser, then review its cross-site tracking settings.
  • Use the “Why this ad” menu to see whether the ad is tied to the video context rather than your account.
  • If using a blocker, remember its scope is usually the browser and that the FTC does not promise complete ad or tracking removal.

The key distinction: less personalized versus ad-free

Google’s Safety Center says that turning off ad personalization still leaves you with ads, which will most likely be less relevant to your interests. Deleting or pausing YouTube history further reduces history-based signals but does not remove advertising space. Browser, phone and TV controls reduce tracking in their respective layers. Only an applicable YouTube paid membership addresses the separate goal of removing ads from YouTube itself.
