There is no single Facebook switch that hides every profile detail from strangers. To reduce what non-friends can see, open Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and visibility, set each profile field and post to an audience you choose, restrict the Friends section, review tagging controls, and finish with View As. Current profile and cover photos remain public, and other people’s posts or privacy choices can still reveal some connections.
What strangers can see on Facebook
Facebook divides privacy into separate audiences rather than one all-purpose private-profile mode. A stranger’s view can include information from your profile, posts, tagged content, public sections and the connections other people expose. The most reliable approach is an audit of each category, not a single change.

Facebook’s privacy-settings guide groups the relevant controls under Audience and visibility. The labels and available choices can differ by account type, country, app version and desktop layout, so look for that heading or open Privacy Checkup if the menu shown here is different.

| Area | What the control changes | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Profile details | Who can see individual information in About, Contact and Basic Info | It does not change the audience of a separate post that contains the same information |
| Friends section | Who can open the Friends section on your profile | It cannot remove mutual-friend displays or another person’s public friends list |
| Posts and stories | The intended audience for future or existing posts you control | It cannot override the original poster’s audience on somebody else’s post |
| Profile and tagging | Who can add people to the audience of tagged posts and whether tags or posts are reviewed | Hiding an item from your timeline does not necessarily remove it from its original location |
| External search | Whether search engines may link to your profile | It does not instantly delete an already indexed or cached result |
| Blocking | Stops or limits interaction with a selected account | It is not a substitute for setting audiences on content |
Open Audience and visibility
- On Facebook, select your profile picture or account menu.
- Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Audience and visibility.
- Work through the categories for profile details, how people find and contact you, posts, stories, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking.
On the mobile app, the account menu is usually the profile-picture button; on a computer it is normally at the top-right of Facebook. A profile type or regional setting may show fewer options or use slightly different wording. If you cannot find the category, use the settings search box for Audience and visibility or start Privacy Checkup, then verify the resulting setting rather than assuming it changed.

Set profile details one field at a time
Open your profile and select Edit profile or About, then inspect Contact and Basic Info. Facebook places an audience selector beside many individual details. Open the selector for each item and choose the narrowest audience that still serves its purpose.
- Friends: limits the field to people you have accepted as friends, where that option is offered.
- Only me: removes the field from other viewers while retaining it for your account, where available.
- Custom or a narrower audience: useful when only selected people should see the information.
- Public: allows anyone on or off Facebook to view the field.
Do not assume every field has the same choices. Facebook may make some items public, omit an Only me option, or handle a category differently from an email address or phone number. Set each selector deliberately, then look at the profile as a non-friend with View As.
Understand the profile-picture and cover-photo exception
Changing the audience of profile details does not make your current images private. Facebook states: “Your current profile picture and cover photo are public, so they can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook.” The explanation appears in Facebook’s profile-picture and cover-photo help page and the English Help Centre version at this URL.

Hide the full Friends section
Facebook says the Friends section is public by default. In Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and visibility → How people find and contact you, open Who can see your friends list? and select Only me if you do not want strangers opening the full list from your profile. Facebook documents this control at Adjust who can see your Friends section on Facebook.

Only me limits the list displayed on your own profile; it does not make every friendship unknowable. A friend may leave their own Friends section public, and Facebook can show mutual friends to people viewing a profile. If a connection is sensitive, both people need to review what their own settings expose. You also cannot use your Friends-section setting to change a separate person’s profile.
Control future posts and existing posts
Choose an audience before publishing
When writing a post, open the audience button beside your name and choose Public, Friends, a custom audience or Only me when those choices fit the post. The selection becomes the intended audience for that item. Check it each time if you regularly share different kinds of information; a previous audience is easy to overlook.
Review older posts with Activity Log
For posts already published, open your profile menu and go to Activity Log, then use Manage Activity to filter and review posts. Facebook’s instructions for managing profile posts are at Share and Manage Posts on Your Profile. Depending on the item, you can change its audience, move it to archive or trash, or remove a tag. Review older public posts first, then work through anything containing contact information, location details or photographs.
Separate a timeline decision from an audience decision
These actions affect different places:
| Action | Immediate effect | Possible remaining visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Hide a post from your profile | Removes it from your timeline view | The original post can remain visible in Feed, search or another Facebook location to its existing audience |
| Change the audience of a post you own | Restricts that post wherever Facebook applies the new audience | Copies, screenshots or information repeated in another post are separate items |
| Remove your tag | Disconnects your profile from the tag | The original post may remain on the other person’s profile for that person’s audience |
| Delete your own post | Removes the post you control | Other people’s posts, comments or saved copies are not deleted by that action |
Review tagged posts and profile appearance
Under Audience and visibility → Profile and tagging, inspect two separate questions: who can see posts that appear on your profile, and whether people can be added to the audience of a post where you are tagged. Choose the narrowest audience offered for the latter if you do not want a tagged post automatically expanded to your friends.
Turn on review options for posts and tags before they appear on your profile when those controls are available. Review is a gate for your timeline; it is not a way to rewrite the audience selected by the person who published the post. Facebook explains the tagged-post audience relationship in Choose who can see a post that you’re tagged in on Facebook.

The original poster’s audience still matters. If somebody publishes to Public and tags you, hiding the item from your timeline does not automatically make the original post private. Open the post at its original location, ask the poster to change its audience or remove the tag, and use Activity Log to manage the copy that appears on your profile.
Check the result with View As
View As is an inspection tool, not a privacy setting. Open your profile, select the profile options button and choose View As to see the version presented to people who are not your friends. Facebook documents this check in its Help Center at Comment voir la vue publique de votre profil Facebook; the page is in French, but the feature name and procedure are the same concept.
- Scan the introductory profile information, contact details and Friends section.
- Open the visible posts and photos rather than checking only the timeline header.
- Note anything you expected to be hidden.
- Exit View As, open that item at its source, and change its own audience or remove the tag.
- Run View As again after saving. A browser or app may need a refresh before the new audience is displayed.
View As cannot show every possible person-specific result. A custom audience, mutual-friend relationship or another user’s privacy setting can produce a different view, so treat the screen as a public-profile check rather than proof of total invisibility.
Stop search engines from linking to your profile
In How people find and contact you, look for the setting that controls whether external search engines can link to your profile. Turn it off if you do not want Facebook to allow that link for future crawling. Facebook describes this issue in Troubleshoot Privacy Issues.
This setting is separate from Facebook’s own audiences. It also does not instantly erase a result that a search engine already indexed or cached. The old result can remain until the engine refreshes its index; Facebook says you may need to contact the search engine directly for removal while waiting for that refresh. Removing the link from search results would not change a public post or image that remains available on Facebook.

Block one specific person when necessary
If the concern is a particular account, use Facebook’s blocking control under Audience and visibility or the person’s profile menu. Blocking is an interaction and access control for that account, not a replacement for checking every audience. It does not retroactively make your public photos, a widely visible post or another person’s content private for everyone else.
After blocking, still complete the profile, Friends, posts, tagging and View As checks. If the person has another account or is viewing material through a shared context, your general audience choices remain the protection that affects everyone.
A practical privacy audit order
Use this sequence when you want to finish the review without missing a category:
- Open Audience and visibility and note which categories your account provides.
- Set sensitive About, Contact and Basic Info fields individually.
- Check the current profile picture and cover photo, then review older images separately.
- Set the Friends section to Only me or another available audience that matches your goal.
- Choose a default or per-post audience for future posts.
- Use Activity Log and Manage Activity to review older public posts.
- Configure Profile and tagging, including review-before-profile options.
- Inspect tagged posts at their original locations and contact the poster when its audience is too broad.
- Disable external search-engine links if you do not want new profile links indexed.
- Run View As, record anything still visible, and correct it at the source rather than only hiding it from your timeline.
Why a stranger may still see something
A current photo is visible
That is expected for the current profile picture and cover photo. Review older images, but do not expect the active two images to become private through an ordinary audience selector.
A hidden post appears elsewhere
Check whether you only hid it from your profile. Open the original post and inspect its audience; the original location controls what its existing viewers can see.
Best Value
A tagged photo remains available
Review the tag and the original poster’s audience. Removing your profile tag changes your association with the item, but it does not delete the post from the publisher’s profile.
A Google or other search result has not disappeared
Turning off Facebook’s external-search link setting does not clear an existing cache immediately. Wait for the index to refresh and use the search engine’s removal process when appropriate.
A friend connection is still inferable
Hiding your Friends section controls your profile’s list, not another person’s list or the mutual-friend information Facebook can display. Ask the other person to review their own Friends visibility if the connection must be less discoverable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The menu does not match these instructions
Facebook changes labels and layouts by app, desktop interface, profile type and region. Search Settings for Audience and visibility or use Privacy Checkup, then confirm the saved result with View As. Do not assume a similarly named control covers every category.
What these settings can and cannot do
Careful audience settings substantially reduce the profile details strangers can open, but they cannot guarantee that nobody will ever infer a connection or encounter public material. Facebook’s controls operate on the item and the location where it was published. A private profile field, a hidden timeline item, a current public photo, a mutual-friend display and a search-engine cache are different visibility problems. Treat each one separately, verify the public view, and revisit the audit whenever you change your profile or Facebook changes its menus.
