Choose the right kind of stop
SmartNews has two layers of notification controls. The app controls individual alert categories, while iOS, iPadOS and Android provide a device-level switch for the app. Your choice depends on whether you want to keep some SmartNews alerts.

If your aim is specifically to stop interruptions about fast-moving events, use the in-app Breaking News switch first. If you do not want any SmartNews alert—including scheduled, local, personalized or campaign messages—the operating system’s app-level switch is the broadest option.
What SmartNews notification categories mean
Turning off one category does not automatically silence the others. SmartNews identifies several notification types:

- Scheduled Pushes: notifications delivered on a schedule configured by the service.
- Local Updates: alerts related to local news or information.
- Personalized Picks: recommendations selected for your interests or reading activity.
- Point Campaigns: messages connected with SmartNews point or promotional campaigns.
The exact list or presentation can differ by app version, account, country and operating system. If you disable Breaking News and still receive a message, identify which of these other categories is responsible and switch off that category as well.
Turn off breaking-news alerts inside SmartNews
SmartNews documents the same basic in-app route for both iOS and Android. Category controls let you keep useful alerts while removing the ones that are disruptive.
- Open SmartNews. Make sure you are changing settings in the SmartNews app rather than in a browser or a device-wide notification screen.
- Open Profile. Profile is normally in the bottom navigation bar. If the bottom bar is hidden, SmartNews says to drag down on any channel tab to reveal the Profile icon.
- Open Settings. Tap the gear icon.
- Open Notifications. This page contains the available SmartNews notification categories.
- Switch off Breaking News. Leave other categories enabled if you still want them.
- Review every other category. Turn off Scheduled Pushes, Local Updates, Personalized Picks or Point Campaigns if those messages are also unwanted.
After changing the toggles, leave the settings page and return to the app. The change applies to future alerts; it does not remove messages that have already arrived in your notification history.
Block all SmartNews notifications on iPhone or iPad
Apple’s Allow Notifications control is a complete device-level block for SmartNews. It overrides the individual choices inside the app, so no SmartNews category can deliver a notification while the switch is off.

- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll to and select SmartNews.
- Turn off Allow Notifications.
This is the quickest route when you want silence from SmartNews without checking each category. To resume alerts later, return to the same screen and turn Allow Notifications on. You can then use SmartNews’s own Notifications page to decide which categories remain active.
If SmartNews is not listed under Notifications
Use the device’s Settings search for “SmartNews” or “Notifications.” Menu placement can vary between iOS and iPadOS releases. If the app has never requested notification permission, its entry may not appear in the expected location until SmartNews requests access. Do not confuse the app’s in-app category switches with Apple’s permission: the in-app switches cannot grant a permission that is disabled at the operating-system level.
Stop SmartNews notifications on Android
Android can silence every SmartNews alert or, on many versions, disable particular notification categories. Names differ by Android release and manufacturer; the settings may be labeled Apps or Apps & notifications.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Select SmartNews from the app list. Use Settings search if necessary.
- Tap Notifications.
- For a complete block, turn SmartNews notifications off.
- For a partial block, leave app notifications enabled and switch off only the categories you do not want.
Some Android devices expose categories as individual channels with their own switches, sound, vibration or priority settings. If you want to keep local updates but remove breaking news, disable the channel whose name corresponds to Breaking News rather than disabling the entire SmartNews app. If your phone offers only one master switch, use the in-app category controls for finer selection.

Why alerts can continue after you turn off Breaking News
Most “still getting alerts” cases have a straightforward explanation: Breaking News is only one category. A scheduled push, local update, personalized pick or point-campaign message can arrive after Breaking News has been disabled. Check the label or wording of the alert, then revisit SmartNews → Profile → Settings → Notifications and disable the category that matches it.
A second possibility is that the app-level setting changed but the operating system still permits notifications. Conversely, a device-level block can be lifted while the app’s categories remain enabled. Check both layers when the result does not match your intention.
SmartNews’s troubleshooting sequence for persistent alerts
When settings appear correct but notifications continue, SmartNews recommends resetting the app’s notification choices and then checking the operating system.
- Reset the in-app choices. In SmartNews, open Profile → Settings → Notifications. Turn notifications off, turn them back on, and set the categories you actually want.
- Recheck the phone’s permission. On iPhone or iPad, verify Settings → Notifications → SmartNews → Allow Notifications. On Android, verify Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → SmartNews → Notifications, including individual categories where shown.
- Check background operation on iOS. Open Settings → General → Background App Refresh and ensure SmartNews is enabled while troubleshooting delivery behavior.
- Check battery and background limits on Android. Review Battery optimization or Background usage limits for SmartNews. Ensure the app is not marked Sleeping or Restricted if you are diagnosing delayed or inconsistent notification changes.
- Restart the device. A restart can refresh the notification service after permission or category changes.
These checks address both unwanted alerts and settings that appear not to take effect. Do not enable background access as a way to silence alerts; those controls concern whether the app can operate and deliver reliably, not which categories you have selected.

Allow for a settings-change stabilization period
SmartNews says that after reinstalling the app, switching devices or changing notification settings, delivery may take up to seven days to fully stabilize. This is a troubleshooting window, not a statement that unwanted alerts should normally continue for seven days. First confirm the in-app and operating-system switches, then monitor whether the behavior settles during that period.
If an alert arrives during the window, record its category and the date and time. That makes it easier to determine whether the message is a different category, a device permission that was re-enabled, or an ongoing delivery problem. If all categories are off in SmartNews and the device-level switch is off, a new SmartNews notification should not be able to appear through the normal notification system; continue checking for another installed app or a different device profile if what you see does not identify as SmartNews.

Use the Breaking News toggle when you want a quieter news stream
This is the least disruptive change. You retain other SmartNews notifications, such as local or personalized messages, while removing the immediate alerts that are most likely to interrupt you.

Review the entire Notifications page rather than stopping after Breaking News. This is the appropriate choice when, for example, you want local updates but not scheduled pushes, or you want no campaign messages while keeping editorial alerts.
Use the device-level switch for a complete block
Apple’s Allow Notifications switch and Android’s app notification switch are the fastest way to stop every SmartNews alert. They are also broader than an in-app change: the block applies even if SmartNews adds another category later or a category was missed during manual review.

How to verify that the change worked
- Confirm the switch’s final position after leaving and reopening the settings page.
- Check both SmartNews’s Notifications page and the phone’s SmartNews notification page; they control different layers.
- Identify the category of any later alert before changing more settings.
- On Android, expand the app’s notification channels if the phone offers them; a master switch can hide category-specific choices until the app is selected.
- On iPhone or iPad, confirm that Allow Notifications is off when you need a complete block.
- After a reinstall, device migration or settings change, allow for SmartNews’s documented stabilization period of up to seven days while continuing to check for misconfigured permissions.
What happens when you change phones or reinstall SmartNews?
Notification permissions belong partly to the operating system and partly to the app’s own settings. A new phone, a restored backup or a fresh installation can therefore require a new check in both places. Open SmartNews and review Profile → Settings → Notifications, then open the device’s SmartNews notification settings and confirm the intended state.
