The menu names and behavior below are for Ray-Ban Meta glasses and the Meta AI app. Features can differ by hardware generation, country, account type, and app version. The privacy principles also apply to other camera-and-microphone wearables: identify what is captured, where it is stored, which processing is optional, and which services receive a copy.

This is a privacy-minimization guide, not a claim that buying any particular glasses makes recording private. If you need a wearable with no camera, microphone, or cloud AI at all, compare those capabilities before purchasing rather than relying on an app switch after the fact.

Understand what is recorded, stored, and shared
Different data paths have different controls and retention behavior. Treating them as one “recording” setting is the most common reason a privacy change appears not to work.

There is no universal retention period for every category. A 30-day cloud-media deletion description is not a promise about AI-processed photos, voice records, account data, or copies already sent to another service.
Stop camera recording immediately
Switch the glasses off
Slide the physical power switch to the off position. The Ray-Ban FAQ documents a red shutdown indication. This is the clearest way to prevent the cameras and microphones from operating while the glasses are being worn but not needed. Do this before entering a meeting, changing clothes, visiting a confidential facility, or handing the glasses to another person.
Use the capture LED as a bystander signal
Meta describes the front capture LED as a required hardware signal and says, “The capture LED has no off switch.” The company also says, “The camera is disabled when people try to do this,” referring to covering or tampering with the LED. Do not tape over, paint, obstruct, or modify it; that can disable the camera and violates Meta’s guidelines.

That warning is a reason to obtain clear consent and avoid recording in places where people expect privacy, not a reason to defeat the indicator. If someone asks whether the camera is active, stop, show the glasses’ status, and switch them off if consent is absent.
Do not rely on the light alone
The LED signals camera capture; it does not tell a bystander whether a previously imported file is being uploaded, whether a voice interaction is being processed, or whether a copy already exists on a phone. Use the power switch and the app controls below for those separate paths.

Turn off cloud media and additional telemetry
These are separate settings. Turning off one does not automatically turn off the other.
- Open the Meta AI app and connect the glasses.
- Tap the settings gear.
- Open Glasses privacy.
- Switch Cloud media off. Android Central describes this as preventing photos and videos from being sent to Meta servers for cloud processing. If your account still shows an upload or pending item, let it finish or delete it using the controls shown in your app; labels and behavior can change by version.
- In the same Glasses privacy screen, switch Share additional data off. Android Central says this limits sharing about how often and how well the device is used.
- Close and reopen the privacy screen to confirm both switches remain off. A setting that reverted after an account change or app update should be treated as enabled until you verify it again.
Disabling these options reduces optional cloud processing and usage telemetry; it does not erase media already imported to your phone, AI interactions already submitted, or copies shared to another service.

Reduce unintended voice capture
Disable Respond without “Hey Meta”
- Open the Meta AI app with the glasses connected.
- Go to Meta AI.
- Open Hey Meta preferences.
- Turn Respond without “Hey Meta” off.
Ray-Ban says that when this feature is enabled, the microphone stays on for a short period after each voice command. If the wearer keeps talking during those seconds, the glasses can record and process that audio. Disabling the feature makes an explicit wake phrase necessary for a follow-up request, reducing—but not eliminating—the chance of an unintended recording.
Review the voice-activity log
Open the app’s voice-activity history and inspect entries for conversations you did not intend to submit. Delete stored interactions using the controls available in your current app version. If the log is missing, the account may expose management through a different privacy page or the feature may not be available in your region; update the app, check the account’s privacy settings, and do not assume that an empty screen proves no audio was processed.
Use the physical switch for sensitive conversations
Voice settings govern how a request is initiated and what happens immediately afterward. They do not turn a microphone-and-camera wearable into an offline device. For legal, medical, financial, or confidential discussions, switch the glasses off and leave them powered down for the entire conversation.

Control imports and the phone copy
Keep captures on the glasses until you decide
Meta says gallery captures are stored privately on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them. That gives you a decision point: review the event, delete unwanted captures, and import only what you intend to keep. Do not treat the glasses’ local gallery as a permanent archive; storage limits, device failure, or a reset can remove it.
Remember that an import becomes ordinary phone media
After import, a photo or video behaves like any other item in the phone’s gallery. Your phone may automatically back it up to a photo service, index it for search, expose it to editing apps, or include it in a shared album. Those actions are controlled by the phone and the destination service, not by the glasses’ Cloud media switch.
- Open the phone gallery after each import and remove files you do not need.
- Check the gallery app’s backup settings and recently deleted folder.
- Review shared albums, family libraries, messaging attachments, and automatic memories.
- When sending a file, verify the recipient, audience, and account shown by the destination app.
Disconnect social and messaging destinations
Ray-Ban documents direct sharing to Instagram and Facebook Stories and to messaging providers. Meta says anything you share to another app or to the internet is handled under that destination’s rules. A destination can retain, re-share, download, or expose a file to an audience that is different from your Meta account.
- In the Meta AI app, open the connected-glasses settings and review every linked service.
- Remove Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, or phone integrations you do not actively use.
- For each service you keep, inspect the default audience and story settings in that service’s own app.
- Revoke old sessions or connected-device access from the destination account if the glasses were previously paired with someone else’s phone.
Ray-Ban states that the destination account controls the audience for Stories. Therefore, changing a glasses setting cannot make a Story that was already posted private; change or delete that post in the destination service.
Understand AI photo processing and the “always enabled” concern
AI questions can create a separate processing record
The Ray-Ban FAQ says AI-processed photos—including recognized objects and text—are stored and used to improve Meta products and train Meta AI with trained reviewers, under Meta’s Privacy Policy. This is distinct from simply keeping a gallery capture on the glasses. If a scene contains a face, document, screen, address, or other sensitive material, avoid submitting it to an AI feature unless that processing is acceptable to everyone shown or affected.

Qualify reports about continuous processing
The Texas Attorney General’s office says Meta’s privacy policy describes an “always enabled” mode that can constantly process video for Meta AI. That is a government allegation or description, not proof that every model, software version, account, or region behaves identically. Check the mode available on your device, disable optional AI features you do not need, and power the glasses off when continuous sensing would be inappropriate.

Remove personal media and account links before another person receives the glasses. Ray-Ban says a factory reset permanently erases captures and account associations on the glasses.
- Import or securely copy any capture you genuinely need.
- Delete unwanted captures and review the phone gallery and its backup service.
- Disconnect social, messaging, and phone integrations.
- Use the factory-reset procedure shown in the current Ray-Ban support instructions or in your app’s device settings.
- Wait for the reset and shutdown indication to complete, then verify that the glasses no longer appear as a connected device in your account.
A reset cannot retract files already sent to Meta servers, a phone backup, a message thread, a Story, or another person. Handle those copies in the service where they were created.
What to do when a privacy control seems ineffective
Cloud media keeps appearing enabled
Reconnect the glasses, return to Glasses privacy, and check the switch after the app finishes syncing. If the label or location differs, update the Meta AI app and consult the in-app help for your region. Until you can confirm the switch is off, avoid capturing material that must not leave the device and keep the glasses powered down.

Cloud media does not prevent a wearer from importing a capture. Check whether the file was transferred to the phone manually, restored from a backup, or shared by another app. Delete the phone copy and its backup separately.

The voice log has no delete button
Controls can vary by account and app version. Look under Meta AI privacy and account activity, install the current app update, and contact support if an interaction remains visible but cannot be managed. Keep Respond without “Hey Meta” disabled and power down the glasses for sensitive use.
Someone cannot see the capture LED
Do not assume the person consented or that the camera is off. Stop the capture, explain what the glasses are doing, and switch them off. Never cover or modify the LED; Meta says doing so disables the camera and violates its guidelines.
You are giving the glasses away
Do not rely on unpairing alone. Complete the factory reset, confirm the account association is gone, and separately remove phone-gallery copies and cloud backups.
When camera-free glasses are the better choice
If your requirement is that no image can be captured, app settings are not enough. Compare products by capability rather than by marketing language:

For workplaces, schools, healthcare settings, and private homes, establish a simple rule: ask before recording, announce when capture starts, and power down in no-recording zones. Technology controls work best when they reinforce an explicit consent policy.
