How do I stop scam texts on my iPhone? Start with Apple’s own screening and filtering controls, then check what your carrier offers. Use a third-party filter only if it supports the message types you receive and its privacy terms are acceptable. Screening sorts unknown messages; reporting sends information for abuse analysis; blocking prevents a specific sender from delivering messages. None of these guarantees that every scam text will be stopped.
Filtering, reporting, and blocking are different controls
These terms describe separate actions, so choosing the right one matters:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Screening or filtering moves messages from unknown senders into separate folders and can suppress notifications. The message may still reach your iPhone.
- Reporting sends information to Apple or, for some SMS, MMS, and RCS messages, to a carrier. Reporting helps identify abuse but does not stop that sender from trying again.
- Blocking targets a particular person or number. Apple says blocking prevents that sender’s messages from being delivered to you.
Scammers regularly change numbers, so manually blocking one number is not a complete solution. A May 2026 Congressional Research Service report describes network-level spam services from major U.S. carriers and notes that changing numbers limits one-number blocking as a long-term response. It names AT&T ActiveArmor, T-Mobile Scam Shield, and Verizon Call Filter as examples, without establishing a performance ranking. Read the CRS report (pages 16–17).

Turn on Apple’s built-in screening and filtering
Apple’s iOS 26 guide provides the current settings path. Open Messages, tap Filter, choose Manage Filtering, and turn on Screen Unknown Senders. Apple’s instructions are documented in the iOS 26 iPhone user guide.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
- IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
- Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
- Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
What Screen Unknown Senders does
Messages from people who are not recognized as known are routed to another folder instead of appearing in your ordinary conversation list. Notifications are suppressed unless you allow the relevant categories. Apple uses verification codes as an example of an unknown message for which you might still want an alert. The exact notification options can vary by country or region.
Screening is not a delivery block. A legitimate first-time contact can be hidden with the scams. Review the filtered folders before assuming a message never arrived. Apple says a sender may be treated as known after you reply three times or more, or after you mark the sender as known or add the person to Contacts. Do not reply to a suspicious text merely to make its link available; verify the claimed business independently first. Apple notes that links from an unknown sender may not open until that sender is made known.
Enable Text Message Filter for unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS
In Messages > Filter > Manage Filtering, enable Text Message Filter. Apple’s iOS 26 documentation says this feature detects and sorts unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS messages into Transactions and Promotions folders. The same area lets you enable any installed third-party filtering extensions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause this is classification rather than a universal block, check the folders periodically. Bank alerts, delivery notices, appointment reminders, and other genuine first-contact messages can be categorized as unknown until you identify the sender.
Recover a message that was classified incorrectly
Open the relevant filtered or spam folder, select the legitimate conversation, and use Apple’s Not Spam or Move to Messages recovery option where shown. You can also mark the sender as known or create a contact. This restores the conversation to the regular list and reduces the chance that future messages from that sender stay hidden.
Report or block a suspicious sender
Apple’s current iOS 27 reporting guide distinguishes reporting from blocking. For an unknown message, you can use Delete and Report Spam. If you opened the conversation, use Report Spam. Apple says a message cannot be reported after you have replied to it. See the iOS 27 report-and-block guide.

- [ IMPORTANT NOTE 1 ] This product is a call blocker only and does not have a telephone or answering machine function. No phone or answering machine is included in the package. Before purchasing, please make sure that your telephone line has Caller ID service and that it is an ANALOG line. the ENF860 requires Caller ID service from your telephone line provider to work and is for analog lines only ! No mains power required, just plug in the phone line to use
- [ IMPORTANT NOTE 2 ] In BLOCK mode, there will STILL BE some new variant numbers bypassing the database making the phone ring, you NEED to manually set up to block them OR switch to FAMILY mode to let only the numbers in FAMILY LIST through. Please refer to the manual for the CORRECT SETTINGS.
- Dual mode;In BLOCK mode you can block callers by Numbers and Names; In FAMILY mode all callers outside the FAMILY LIST are blocked; The two modes can be switched at any time as needed and NO data will be lost after switching modes.
- Preloaded with a large number of spam numbers that have been the subject of repeated complaints ; Users can also manually add 4000+ numbers to the NUMBER LIST to build their own database ; Add 256 NAMES to block calls by name.
- Blocks INTERNATIONAL, PRIVATE/WITHHELD, and Out of Area numbers by default; users can SET to block the entire area code or changing numbers starting with a fixed number, such as 00, 800, 855, 999, 7324, 33626, 134567, etc.
- For iMessage, the report goes to Apple with sender information.
- For SMS, MMS, and RCS, the report control depends on your carrier and region. If it is missing, Apple directs you to contact the carrier.
- Reporting does not block the sender. To stop a particular person or number from delivering messages, use the conversation’s contact controls and choose Block this Caller (wording can vary slightly by iOS release).
Use reporting for abuse intelligence and blocking for a sender you specifically do not want to hear from. Do not treat a successful report as proof that future messages from related numbers will be rejected.

Carrier features are account- and region-dependent. The following descriptions reflect the carriers’ published guidance; they are not a comparative test of effectiveness.
AT&T ActiveArmor
AT&T’s spam-reporting page offers several routes: forward a suspicious message to 7726, report it through the device’s messaging system, use ActiveArmor, or submit a reporting form. Its ActiveArmor support page sends iPhone users to Messages’ Filter and Manage Filtering controls.
The same support material separately describes ActiveArmor’s call functions, including automatic blocking of fraud calls, spam-call labels where possible, and configurable call routing. Those documented call controls should not be presented as a comprehensive iPhone SMS blocker. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal ActiveArmor text-filter capability, current pricing, or eligibility for every AT&T account, so check the service details shown for your line.
T-Mobile Scam Shield and T-Life
T-Mobile says to forward an unwanted SMS to 7726 without editing it or adding comments. The carrier sends a receipt, uses reports to identify spam operations, and says reporting is free and does not count against your plan. Its scam and spam support page gives the current instructions.
T-Mobile’s Scam ID identifies suspicious calls, while Scam Block is described as automatically blocking calls labeled “Scam Likely.” The free T-Life app gives postpaid customers control over listed protections; premium Scam Shield features cost extra, and prepaid accounts have restrictions. Published premium examples include call categories, specific-number blocking, network-stored blocked lists, reverse lookup for unknown callers, and voicemail-to-text. Those examples should not be interpreted as general SMS-content filtering.

- Allow any blocked caller to ring through like normal with the Green Invite Button. Double Tap the Green Button to add VIP callers shown in Call History. Note: Caller ID Name and Number Service from your phone company is required for this model to work automatically.
Verizon Call Filter
Verizon says calls and texts it identifies as intentional spam or fraud may be silenced, not displayed, and sent automatically to voicemail. The qualification is important: this applies to items identified by Verizon, not every scam attempt. Verizon says full functionality requires the Call Filter app.
The carrier’s iPhone instructions also cover the SMS/Call Reporting extension. Select one or more messages, choose Spam or Not spam, and submit the report. The help page is date-stamped October 7, 2026: Verizon Call Filter and reporting instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Optional third-party filter apps
iOS supports third-party Messages filtering extensions, making this a legitimate option when Apple’s folders and your carrier’s controls are not enough. The May 2026 CRS report names Hiya, Nomorobo, RoboKiller, Truecaller, and YouMail as examples of products in the broader caller-ID, call-blocking, voicemail, and text-protection market. That report does not establish that every named product currently filters iPhone SMS, MMS, or RCS, so it is not a basis for ranking or recommending one.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Before installing any app, verify all of the following in its current App Store listing and documentation:
- Whether it supports your iOS release and the exact message types you receive: SMS, MMS, RCS, iMessage, or only calls.
- Whether activation requires a particular carrier, country, account type, or companion app.
- How to inspect a false positive and move a legitimate message back to the main conversation list.
- Whether the service is free, uses a monthly or annual subscription, or places key controls behind a paid tier.
- What information the extension collects, where classification occurs, how long data is retained, and how deletion requests work.
Apple’s privacy guidance says use of a third-party text-message spam filter is governed by that provider’s terms, privacy policy, and practices. Apple’s developer documentation explains that an extension can classify messages itself; if it cannot determine a classification locally, it can direct Messages to send information to a server associated with the app. That does not mean every app uploads full message content, nor that every app keeps all classification on the phone. Read the individual provider’s disclosures at Apple’s text-message-filtering privacy page and the Apple developer documentation.
Apple separately says that in Brazil and India its on-device Text Message Filter uses machine learning and does not send Messages content or data to Apple. That geographic statement does not describe every country or every third-party extension.

What to do when a scam text gets through
The Federal Trade Commission’s April 2025 advice is direct. Its Consumer Advice page states: “Don’t reply to unexpected text messages.” It also says not to click links in unexpected messages. Follow this sequence:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Do not reply. A reply can confirm that your number is active, and Apple says a message cannot be reported through its report control after you have replied.
- Do not tap links or open unexpected attachments. If the text claims to involve a bank, delivery, toll, government service, or account, start from a website or phone number you already know is genuine.
- Report it. Use the iPhone’s report-junk or report-spam control when available, or forward the unedited text to 7726 (SPAM). Carrier instructions can differ; T-Mobile specifically says not to add comments or edit the forwarded message.
- Block the sender if you want that number stopped. Remember that blocking one number does not address messages from new numbers.
- Delete the message after reporting. If a legitimate text was misclassified, use the spam folder’s Not Spam or Move to Messages option instead.
- Report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov when the message involved an attempted scam or loss.
The FTC’s May 2026 consumer advice said its 2025 fraud reports contained more reports of contact by text than by any other method. That is a trend in FTC reports, not a percentage of all texts, a measurement of every scam attempt, or an effectiveness rate for any iPhone filter. See the FTC’s contact-method comparison.
Troubleshooting common iPhone filtering problems
“I still receive notifications from unknown numbers.”
Confirm that Screen Unknown Senders is enabled under Messages > Filter > Manage Filtering. Review the notification choices for Transactions and Promotions; Apple says available options vary by region. Also check whether you previously replied to the sender three times or marked the sender as known, because that changes how the conversation is handled.
“The report-spam button is missing.”
Apple says SMS, MMS, and RCS reporting depends on carrier and region. The control can also disappear after you reply. Contact your carrier if the option is absent, and use 7726 forwarding where your carrier supports it.
“A legitimate delivery or verification text disappeared.”
Open the filtered folders rather than searching only the main conversation list. Select the message and choose Not Spam or Move to Messages; then mark the sender as known or add the contact. For future first-time messages, allow the category notifications you need, understanding that this can increase interruptions.
Recommended Free Tools
“My carrier app blocks calls but not texts.”
That may match the carrier’s documented scope. Scam ID, Scam Block, call labels, voicemail routing, and reverse lookup are call-oriented features. Carrier-specific text reporting or silencing may be separate, and a carrier’s published feature list does not prove that all SMS, MMS, or RCS content is filtered.
Which setup makes sense for your situation?
- Most iPhone users: Enable Screen Unknown Senders and Text Message Filter, review the filtered folders, and learn the report and block controls.
- You want network-level handling: Check your own carrier’s current app and account options. Confirm whether the feature covers texts, calls, or both, and whether your plan and region qualify.
- You receive a high volume of unknown messages: Consider a third-party extension only after verifying current iOS message coverage, false-positive recovery, subscription terms, and privacy disclosures.
- You need one sender stopped immediately: Block that person or number; reporting alone will not prevent delivery.
No documented option promises complete prevention. The strongest practical setup combines Apple’s filtering, any carrier protection that genuinely covers your message type, careful handling of messages that slip through, and independent verification of every urgent claim.
