These summaries are generated from recent notification history, not from a verified transcript. Samsung’s own warning is direct: “Summaries may not always be accurate.” Use the setting as a convenience feature, never as an authoritative account of who said what or what a group decided.

Why a group-chat summary can give the wrong impression
Notification highlights condenses conversational notifications into a short summary. Samsung says it uses notification history from the previous 24 hours to create those summaries. In a fast-moving group, that window can contain replies, corrections, jokes, quoted text and messages from several people. A short digest can therefore omit the context that distinguishes a question from an answer, an individual opinion from a group decision, or an old message from the latest update.

The feature is an AI-generated convenience, not a transcript. Samsung does not publish an accuracy percentage or a guarantee that every participant will be attributed correctly. The documented limitation is simply that “Summaries may not always be accurate.” If an interpretation matters, open the chat and read the original messages.

Turning off summaries prevents the digest from being generated by this feature. It does not change the messages in the chat, and it does not require a repair, accessory or separate application.
Before changing the setting, identify what you want to stop
There are three different things users often call a “summary.” First is Samsung’s Notification highlights digest, controlled under Galaxy AI. Second is a messaging app’s own notification grouping or collapsed preview. Third is the app’s ordinary notification permission, sound, vibration or lock-screen behavior. Turning off Samsung’s summary layer affects only the first item.
If individual messages are still grouped after you disable Notification highlights, that does not mean the switch failed. WhatsApp, Messenger, Google Messages and other apps can continue to bundle alerts according to their own rules. Open the app’s notification settings if you want to change those alerts separately.

Turn off Samsung notification summaries everywhere
Use the global switch when you do not want Notification highlights summarizing conversations in any supported app.
- Open Settings on the Galaxy phone.
- Tap Galaxy AI.
- Tap Notification highlights.
- Tap Summarize notifications.
- Turn off the switch at the top of the screen.
That is Samsung’s documented route in its Notification highlights support guide. The wording or location can differ on another model or software build. If the switch is already off, the phone should not create new Notification highlights summaries through that control.
After changing it, allow a new message to arrive before judging the result. A highlight that was already posted can remain in the notification shade until it is dismissed or the relevant app refreshes. The setting prevents new summaries; it is not a command to rewrite old notifications or delete chat history.
Disable summaries only for the affected chat app
A global shutdown is not necessary if you still find summaries useful in other applications. Samsung says Prioritize notifications and Summarize notifications can be controlled for individual apps. The exact screen depends on the phone and software version, so look for the app-level controls from Notification highlights or in the app’s notification settings.

Use the app-level control
- Open Settings and go to Galaxy AI > Notification highlights.
- Open the list or controls for individual apps.
- Select the messaging app that is producing the misleading digest.
- Turn off that app’s Summarize notifications option, if it is shown.
This leaves the global feature available for other supported apps while preventing summaries from the selected app. Samsung confirms that per-app control exists, but does not promise the same labels or layout on every Galaxy phone. If the app is not listed, use the global switch or check the app’s normal notification settings for a summary option.
Samsung documents app-level control rather than a guaranteed control for one individual conversation. If only one family, school or work group is troublesome, you may therefore have to disable summaries for the whole messenger. Muting that one chat can reduce alerts, but muting is a separate action and does not correct an inaccurate digest that has already been created.
What to do when “Notification highlights” is missing
Do not assume that every Galaxy phone includes this feature. Samsung’s troubleshooting documentation identifies Notification highlights on Galaxy phones running One UI 8.5 or later, including the Galaxy S26 series and newer models. Samsung also says features and menu options vary by device, software version and app version.
- Open Settings > About phone > Software information and check the One UI version shown on your device.
- Return to Settings > Software update and install an offered update, following the phone’s on-screen instructions.
- Restart the phone and search Settings for Notification highlights or Summarize notifications.
- If the feature is still absent, your model, region or software build may not support it. You cannot use a menu that Samsung has not exposed on that device; use the phone’s ordinary per-app notification controls instead.
Samsung’s troubleshooting guide is the current reference for the documented One UI scope. An update can change labels and availability, so instructions copied from an older Galaxy model may not match your screen.

Samsung identifies no hardware part or paid service needed for this setting. If an update is unavailable, the practical workaround is to manage notifications inside the messaging app or use the global notification controls your model does provide.
Global switch or one-app switch?

The choice is about where Samsung’s summarization runs; it is not a setting for muting a chat, leaving a group or deleting notification history. Those are separate notification or messaging actions.
For a household phone with several messengers, per-app control is the least disruptive option. For a work phone where a mistaken digest could affect approvals, schedules or customer instructions, global disable is simpler to audit: there is no supported conversational app for which the feature remains enabled.

When Samsung generates a summary—and why that does not solve accuracy
Samsung’s troubleshooting page describes conditions that affect whether a summary appears. They are useful for explaining a missing digest, but they are not a way to make an existing digest trustworthy.

These requirements describe availability, timing and generation. They do not provide an accuracy safeguard. A nine-minute group conversation can still be summarized with the wrong emphasis, and a long notification can still omit the message that resolves a disagreement. If your concern is that the digest misrepresents a group conversation, switching off Summarize notifications is the reliable prevention step.
Supported apps and languages are not permanent guarantees
Samsung’s U.S. guidance lists the following examples of supported apps at the time of its documentation. Samsung expressly says the list may change, so an app shown here can gain or lose support after an update.

The support list is published in Samsung’s Notification highlights troubleshooting information. Availability can vary with the app release, phone model, region and One UI build. A language appearing in Samsung’s list does not mean every message, slang term, attachment or mixed-language conversation will be summarized correctly.
Unsupported apps may still show ordinary notifications. That is different from a failure of the Galaxy AI control. Check whether the alert is a Samsung highlight or the app’s own grouped notification before changing settings.
Check the original conversation before acting on a digest
If a summary has already caused confusion, treat it as a prompt to open the source chat, not as evidence. Read the messages in their original order and check replies, quoted text, edits and follow-up corrections. For a work, school or family decision, ask the participants to confirm the conclusion in the chat itself.
After disabling the feature, future alerts should arrive without Notification highlights summaries from the disabled scope. A notification generated before the change may still be visible until the notification is dismissed or the app updates it; the setting controls summarization, not the app’s existing message history. Samsung’s documentation does not claim that changing the switch rewrites or removes past chat messages.

Take extra care with messages that include sarcasm, shorthand, several languages, voice-note previews, images or links. A summary can only work from the notification content made available to it, which may be less complete than the conversation view. The safest comparison is the full chat, not a second AI tool or a screenshot of the digest.

The summary still appears after you switched it off
- Reopen Settings > Galaxy AI > Notification highlights > Summarize notifications and verify that the top-level switch is off.
- If you intended to affect one app only, confirm that the app-level control—not merely a different notification preference—was disabled.
- Dismiss the old highlight and wait for a new message. A previously generated notification can remain until the notification or app refreshes.
- Check for a software update, because Samsung can change menu labels and behavior between One UI releases.
No summary appears, but you wanted to test the feature
- Confirm that the app is on Samsung’s supported-app list and that your phone exposes Notification highlights.
- For a group chat, allow the conversation to run for the documented nine minutes; for a one-to-one chat, Samsung documents three minutes.
- Check that the notification is at least 200 characters, the screen is off, the phone is at least 30% charged and Power saving mode is not active.
- Remember that these are generation conditions, not a promise of accurate attribution or interpretation.
The menu path does not match these instructions
Samsung’s general notification guidance notes that controls vary by Galaxy model and software. Start in Settings and use its search field for Galaxy AI, Notification highlights or Summarize notifications. If no matching control appears after an update check, the feature may not be available on that device. Samsung’s general reference is Control notifications on your Galaxy phone or tablet.

Inconsistent output can reflect the documented timing and length requirements rather than a broken switch. Check whether the conversation lasted long enough, whether the alert exceeded 200 characters and whether the phone was charging with Power saving mode off. If summaries appear but misstate the discussion, those conditions are irrelevant to trustworthiness; disable the feature for that app or globally.
What disabling summaries does—and does not—change
- It changes: whether Samsung’s Notification highlights feature creates AI-generated summaries for the selected scope.
- It does not change: the chat app’s messages, membership, mute status, read receipts, notification permission or account settings.
- It does not guarantee: that a chat app will show every message as an individual notification; the app may group, collapse or manage alerts separately.
- It does not require: new hardware, a paid service, a repair or a physical accessory.
For exact behavior of an individual messenger’s alerts, use that app’s own notification documentation. Samsung’s control governs its summarization layer, not every way an app formats or delivers notifications.
Privacy and reliability considerations
Notification highlights uses notification history from the previous 24 hours. That design gives the feature recent context, but it also means the digest can combine messages that arrived at different times. A notification may contain only a preview, a sender name or a fragment of a longer message, leaving the summarizer less context than the full conversation contains.
Because Samsung does not publish a named accuracy rate, there is no defensible percentage for how often a group-chat summary gets attribution or intent right. The practical rule is stricter than a numerical benchmark: do not rely on a digest for an emergency instruction, financial decision, medical information, workplace approval or any dispute about what someone said. Open the source conversation instead, or turn summaries off.

Disabling the feature is also a useful privacy boundary on a shared or frequently visible lock screen. It reduces the chance that a condensed interpretation of a sensitive conversation is displayed where someone can read it, although the underlying app notification may still reveal whatever preview that app is configured to show. Adjust lock-screen notification privacy separately if that is your concern.
Recommended setup for a misleading group chat
- Open the affected conversation and verify what the participants actually wrote.
- Go to Settings > Galaxy AI > Notification highlights.
- If you never want conversational summaries, open Summarize notifications and switch off the top control.
- If you want highlights in other apps, open the per-app controls and disable summarization only for the affected messenger, where that option is available.
- Check for a One UI or app update if the controls are missing or labeled differently.
- For important decisions, rely on the original chat rather than any generated digest.
This approach removes the source of the misleading interpretation without changing the underlying group, messages or account.
