In unmodified GTA 5 Story Mode, there is no documented setting that universally disables ambient pedestrian-versus-pedestrian fights. For a single encounter, avoid escalating it, leave the area or change interiors, and reload your last save if the scene remains stuck. If you want a controlled, pedestrian-free scene, Director Mode’s Pedestrian Density: None removes pedestrians for that scene. On PC, compatible third-party scripts can clear ped tasks or block reactions to ambient events, but they are version-sensitive modifications rather than built-in options.
Choose the least invasive fix first
The right remedy depends on whether you are trying to end one fight or change the game’s behavior for an entire scene. Use this decision guide before changing settings or installing anything.

Stop a fight in unmodified Story Mode
These steps apply to console and PC copies running Story Mode without mods. They are intended for an isolated encounter, not as a permanent policy for every pedestrian in Los Santos.

1. Keep your character out of the escalation
Do not punch, shoot, shove, run over, or otherwise join either participant. Avoid aiming directly at the people fighting as well. GTA 5 can interpret your actions as a new threat, causing one or both peds—and sometimes nearby peds—to react to you. The quickest way to prevent a small ambient event from becoming a larger hostile scene is to remain a bystander.

2. Break the encounter’s active area
Travel several blocks away on foot or by vehicle. If the fight is outside an accessible building, enter an interior and remain there briefly. The goal is to remove the peds from the currently active area so the encounter can unload rather than continuing in your immediate vicinity. This is the safest option when you want to keep your current progress and do not need a persistent change.
3. Return only after the scene has unloaded
Once you have created distance or changed interiors, come back and check the location. If the participants are gone, no further action is required. A new ambient event can occur later because leaving the area does not disable the game’s general pedestrian behavior.
4. Reload if the fight is stuck
When the encounter continues after you leave, or the surrounding world has accumulated several unwanted reactions, reload the last save. Reloading is more invasive than walking away because it discards unsaved progress, but it gives you a clean state without changing game files. Rockstar Support also states that reloading a save or rebooting resets cheats and returns the game to its previous state.

A reload or full reboot is especially useful when the unusual behavior began immediately after entering a cheat or after a scene that left several peds hostile. Rockstar Support says that reloading a save or rebooting resets cheats. That makes it a practical recovery step when you are unsure which temporary state is active.
Save timing matters. If you save after the fight has already made the world messy, loading that save may preserve the situation. Use a save from before the problem when possible. If no earlier save is available, quit and reboot, then test the area before entering more cheats or deliberately provoking another encounter.

Director Mode: remove pedestrians for one controlled scene
Director Mode is the cleanest built-in way to create a scene with no ambient pedestrians, but it changes the population only inside that Director Mode session. It does not rewrite Story Mode’s normal behavior.
Set Pedestrian Density to None
- Open Director Mode using the game’s Director Mode entry.
- Open the scene or settings controls that contain pedestrian population options.
- Set Pedestrian Density to None.
- Start or resume the scene and verify that ambient pedestrians have disappeared.
The documented density choices are Normal, Low, Medium, High, and None. Selecting None removes pedestrians from the area, so there are no ordinary pedestrian-versus-pedestrian fights to interrupt a machinima shot or a controlled test.
Use a lower nonzero value when you need people in the background but want fewer possible interactions. Lower density reduces the number of ambient actors; it is not a promise that every remaining pedestrian will stay passive. Only None removes the pedestrian population for that scene.
PC scripts for persistent control
PC players who need to manage many spawned peds can use compatible third-party scripting environments. These methods are not part of the standard GTA 5 settings and should be treated as version-sensitive: a game update, runtime change, or incompatible edition can require a script update or make a function stop working.
Clear active tasks
The NPC technical manual demonstrates using Task.ClearAllImmediately() on spawned peds to stop an active fight. In the manual’s wording, “Peace is restored in the universe.” In practice, a script must identify the peds you intend to control and call the task-clearing method through the runtime’s supported object or native interface.

Task.ClearAllImmediately()
Clearing tasks interrupts what a ped is currently doing. It is useful for ending a fight already in progress, but it does not necessarily prevent a new ambient reaction from being assigned later. A script that repeatedly clears tasks can also interfere with missions, scripted scenes, or other behaviors, so limit its scope to the peds or scene you are controlling.

Block reactions to non-temporary events
GTA Connected documents setBlockingOfNonTemporaryEvents as preventing reactions to non-temporary events, including fleeing, fighting, and ambient AI behaviors. This is a different approach from clearing a task: instead of stopping only the current action, it changes whether the ped reacts to a class of ambient events.
setBlockingOfNonTemporaryEvents
The function name alone is not a complete script. Your chosen runtime determines the native-call signature, the ped handle format, and how long the setting remains active. Follow that runtime’s current documentation and apply the flag only to the peds you want controlled. A broad loop over every ped can remove ordinary reactions that make the world feel populated.
Understand the maintenance cost
- These are third-party modifications, not Rockstar’s documented Story Mode settings.
- Compatibility depends on your PC game build, script runtime, and the particular mod or trainer.
- Updates can change native behavior or break an older script.
- Removing a script restores the game’s normal behavior only if the script did not leave a saved or persistent configuration behind.
- Test one function at a time so you can identify whether a task-clearing call or event-blocking call caused an unwanted side effect.
A third-party Pedestrian Riot mod advertises that disabling its riot will instantly stop aggressive behaviors and make participants walk away. That result belongs to that specific mod; it is not a built-in GTA 5 feature and should not be expected from an unmodified game or from an unrelated script.
Cheats are not a permanent peace setting
Rockstar’s official PC tips explain that pressing the tilde key opens the cheat-code box. The documented material does not identify a cheat that permanently prevents random pedestrians from fighting, so entering unrelated codes is not a dependable solution to this problem.

- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box.
Cheats also have consequences that matter when you are troubleshooting:
- Rockstar Support says saving is allowed while cheat codes are enabled, but achievements are temporarily disabled.
- Entering the same cheat code twice will usually, but not always, disable it.
- Reloading a save or rebooting resets cheats.
If a fight began after experimenting with cheats, stop entering new codes, reload a save from before the experiment, or reboot the game. Treat that recovery path as a reset of temporary cheat state, not as proof that a particular code controls pedestrian combat.
Compare the available approaches
| Approach | Platform | Scope | Invasiveness | Side effects and limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walk away or change interiors | Console or unmodified PC | One active encounter | Very low | Future ambient fights remain possible |
| Reload a save | Console or unmodified PC | Current world state and temporary effects | Low to moderate | Unsaved progress is lost; Rockstar says cheats reset |
| Director Mode, Pedestrian Density: None | Supported editions with Director Mode | Entire Director Mode scene | Moderate | All pedestrians are removed for that scene; Story Mode is unchanged |
| Task.ClearAllImmediately() | Compatible modded PC runtime | Selected active ped tasks | Moderate to high | Third-party and version-sensitive; may interrupt other behaviors |
| setBlockingOfNonTemporaryEvents | Compatible modded PC runtime | Selected ambient reactions | Moderate to high | Third-party and version-sensitive; can suppress fleeing, fighting, or other ambient AI reactions |
| Pedestrian Riot mod toggle | PC with that specific mod | That mod’s aggressive behavior | High | Its advertised result is mod-specific, not a native game setting |
Troubleshoot by symptom
The same two peds keep fighting when you return
Leave the block again and use an interior transition. Returning too quickly can keep the area active. If the pair still appears after you have created distance, reload a save made before the encounter.
Nearby pedestrians become hostile after you look at the fight
Stop aiming and move away without attacking either participant. Your aim, weapon, collision, or a stray hit may have been interpreted as a threat. A reload is appropriate if several peds have already switched to hostile behavior.

Do not rely on entering the same code again because Rockstar says that usually—but not always—disables a cheat. Reload the earlier save or reboot instead; those are the documented reset actions.

You need a quiet background for recording
Use Director Mode and choose Pedestrian Density: None. This removes the source of random pedestrian fights while preserving a controlled scene. Remember that the setting applies to Director Mode, not to ordinary Story Mode roaming.
You want every ped to remain passive on PC
Use a maintained, compatible script and decide whether you need to clear current tasks, block future ambient reactions, or both. Apply the narrowest control that meets your goal, because broad event blocking can also suppress fleeing and other ambient behaviors.
A script worked before an update and now does nothing
Assume a compatibility problem first. Check that the script runtime supports your current game build, confirm that the native function name and signature have not changed, and test with one spawned ped. Because these are version-sensitive modifications, a previously working call is not guaranteed to remain functional after an update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy ambient fights cannot simply be switched off in Story Mode
GTA 5’s documented settings guidance covers controls and cheat entry, but it does not document a setting that disables all ambient NPC fights. That is a limitation of the available built-in controls: the game exposes population controls in Director Mode, yet ordinary Story Mode does not provide an equivalent universal peace switch.
Ambient AI is also contextual. Pedestrians can react to nearby threats, collisions, weapons, scripted events, or other peds. Intervening can therefore create more reactions than the original encounter. The practical distinction is between unloading one active event, resetting a temporary world state, removing the population in a special scene, and modifying AI behavior with a script.
A practical checklist
- For one fight, do not join it or aim at either participant.
- Move several blocks away or change interiors.
- Return after the area has unloaded.
- Reload a pre-incident save if the fight or hostility persists.
- Reboot when the issue followed cheat use; Rockstar Support identifies rebooting and reloading as cheat-reset actions.
- For a controlled recording or test, use Director Mode with Pedestrian Density: None.
- On PC, use only a compatible, maintained script when you need persistent control.
- Choose task clearing for an active action and event blocking for selected ambient reactions, understanding that each can affect other AI behavior.
- Do not present a mod’s advertised riot toggle as a native GTA 5 option.
The safest unmodified answer is therefore situational: leave the encounter and reload when necessary. The only documented built-in way to remove pedestrians altogether is Director Mode’s None density, while persistent Story Mode control requires third-party PC scripting with the associated compatibility and maintenance costs.
