Start in the community app, where you can turn off low-value events such as recommendations, reactions, trending posts, live updates and promotions. Keep direct messages, useful mentions, moderation tasks, account-security notices and safety alerts. Then use your iPhone or Android notification settings as the final gate: silence, batch or block whatever still breaks your concentration.
Use three buckets before touching a setting
Notification menus are easier to manage when every alert has a job. Sort community activity into three buckets, then apply the least disruptive control that fits.

- Interrupt now: direct messages from people you need to hear from, mentions that require a response, moderation duties, account-security notices and safety alerts. These can remain audible or arrive immediately.
- Review later: new-post activity, replies in busy threads, community digests and event reminders. Make these silent or deliver them in a scheduled batch.
- Never interrupt: recommendations, trending prompts, “someone reacted” notices, promotional alerts and duplicate email-and-push messages. Turn these off in the app, and block any that remain at the phone level.
This classification avoids the all-or-nothing choice between a constantly buzzing phone and missing a security warning. It also gives you a precise recovery path: if a needed alert disappears, restore only its category or person rather than re-enabling every notification from the app.

Change the community app before changing the phone
App-level controls usually know the difference between a direct message and a recommendation. Operating-system controls generally see the app as a single source, although some phones expose finer categories. Begin with the app’s own notification page whenever it offers one.

Find the app’s notification controls
- Open the community app and go to its profile, account or main menu.
- Open Settings, then look for Notifications, Push notifications or a similarly named section.
- Read the list of event types rather than switching off the master control immediately. Names differ between services and can change after an app update.
- Disable recommendations, trending-post alerts, reaction notices, live-event updates, marketing and other items that do not require action.
- Leave direct messages, relevant mentions, moderation alerts, account-security notices and safety warnings enabled when those options are available.
- Save the changes, then repeat the review for every community app that is interrupting you.
For services that group several events under one label, choose the narrowest option available. For example, keep mentions while disabling general activity, or keep messages while turning off new-content prompts. If the app offers only one broad switch, leave the app enabled and use the operating-system controls below to remove sounds, banners, badges or lock-screen exposure.
Do not assume “silent” means “off”
A silent alert may still create a badge, appear on the lock screen or enter the notification shade. That can be useful for review-later items, but it is not the same as preventing the interruption or the visual cue. Decide separately whether you want the event stored for later, shown without sound, or blocked entirely.
iPhone: make app settings and delivery timing work together
On current iPhone software, open Settings > Notifications, then select the community app. Apple notes that “Many notification settings apply to all app notifications, while others can be customized for individual apps.” The app’s own settings remain important because they may expose message, mention, moderation or marketing types that iOS cannot distinguish by itself.
Use the per-app notification gate
- Open Settings > Notifications > [community app].
- If the app should never interrupt you, turn off Allow Notifications. This is the cleanest option for a service you check manually.
- If some events matter, leave Allow Notifications on and adjust the individual destinations: Lock Screen, Notification Center and Banners.
- Turn Sounds off when you want the alert recorded without an audible interruption.
- Turn Badges off if a growing number on the app icon pulls you back into the community.
- Review Show Previews. Choose When Unlocked or Never if message text on the lock screen is a distraction or a privacy concern.
- Where the app provides separate notification types, use its own controls to keep high-value events and disable the rest.
These controls act at different stages. Turning off banners prevents a pop-up, while disabling Allow Notifications blocks the app’s notifications altogether. Removing sound does not remove the alert from Notification Center, and removing badges does not stop banners. Set each surface deliberately instead of treating the master switch as your only choice.
Batch review-later activity with Scheduled Summary
For non-urgent community activity, use Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary. Apple describes this feature as a way “to minimize interruptions from notifications throughout the day” by scheduling a summary containing notifications from several apps.

- Open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary and turn it on.
- Choose the community apps whose review-later alerts should be collected.
- Select one or two delivery times that match when you normally review communities, such as a midday check and an evening check.
- Keep urgent categories outside the summary when the app and iOS present them separately. Direct messages, security notices and safety alerts should remain immediate if you need them promptly.
- After the first day, confirm that the summary contains the items you intended to postpone and that important alerts still arrive immediately.
Scheduled Summary is for postponing low-priority notifications, not for making an app silent in every context. If a particular event still appears immediately, return to the app’s notification settings or the per-app iPhone screen and change that event’s category.
Reserve work, sleep and family time with Focus
A Focus is a broader interruption filter. Apple describes it as helping people filter notifications during a period reserved for activities such as sleeping, working, reading or driving.

- Under People, allow only the contacts who may interrupt that period.
- Under Apps, allow only the apps that genuinely need access. Do not add the community app merely because you want to review its alerts later.
- Choose whether silenced notifications may be shown in the places offered by your iPhone, such as the lock screen or notification list.
- Add an automatic schedule by time, location or app so the Focus starts without relying on memory.
- Test the Focus during a normal work or sleep period, then adjust one person, app or display option if an essential alert is filtered.
Focus and Scheduled Summary solve different problems. Summary postpones selected app notifications to a review time; Focus defines who and what may interrupt a protected period. You can use both, but avoid creating overlapping rules you cannot remember.

Android: tune the app and its notification categories
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and software build, but the core controls are consistent. Google states: “Based on the notifications you want, you can change settings for certain apps or for your whole phone.” Start with Settings > Notifications > App notifications. On some devices the equivalent path is Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications.
Turn off an app or adjust it selectively
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications and select the community app.
- Use the app-level switch to block every notification when you never need real-time alerts from that service.
- If you need some alerts, leave the app enabled and inspect the listed notification categories or channels.
- Keep categories for direct messages, mentions, moderation, account security and safety when they are available.
- Set recommendations, social reactions, trending activity and marketing categories to Silent or turn them off.
- For each retained category, check sound, vibration, pop-up behavior and lock-screen visibility. A silent category may still be visible in the notification shade, while a disabled category should not appear.
Category names are controlled by the app and can differ between Android builds. If you cannot find a separate “mentions” or “direct messages” channel, use the app’s internal notification page; Android can only expose distinctions that the app supplies.
Use Notification history to identify the culprit
When repeated alerts make it unclear which service is responsible, open Settings > Notifications > Notification history after a noisy period. History can show which app produced an alert and, on devices that expose channels, which category produced it. Use that evidence to change the specific app or category instead of muting unrelated services.

Notification history is a diagnostic aid, not a replacement for app settings. If it shows a broad category responsible for several kinds of events, return to the app and look for a finer distinction before disabling the entire category.
Account for manufacturer differences
Android manufacturers may place the same controls under different menus or use different terms for pop-ups, bubbles, lock-screen alerts, vibration and silent delivery. Confirm that you have found the same concepts—app permission, category, sound, vibration, pop-up and lock-screen visibility—even when the path is not identical to the one above.

The practical difference is not that one platform can solve every case automatically. iPhone provides documented Scheduled Summary and Focus workflows; Android often gives especially useful category-level control when an app exposes channels, plus Notification history for tracing a noisy source.
Preserve important alerts without reopening the floodgates
Use a staged change rather than flipping every switch at once. The following sequence keeps the cause of any missed alert visible.
- Disable or silence the obvious low-value event types inside the community app.
- Apply the phone-level controls for sound, banners, badges and previews.
- Batch review-later events with Scheduled Summary on iPhone, or use the equivalent scheduling and silent options available on your Android device.
- Create a Focus or other scheduled interruption filter for work, sleep or another protected block.
- During the next day, watch for direct messages, required mentions, moderation duties, security notices and safety alerts.
- If one important alert is delayed or missing, restore only the category, person or delivery surface responsible. Do not restore the app’s entire notification set.
For a community you moderate, treat moderation and security as separate from ordinary social activity whenever the app offers those categories. For a community you only read, you may be able to leave all activity in the review-later bucket and keep only account-security and safety notices immediate.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The app still interrupts after you changed its settings
- Check whether the alert is coming from a different category, such as a live update or promotion that was not included in the first change.
- On iPhone, open Settings > Notifications > [app] and remove the remaining banner, sound or badge surface.
- On Android, inspect the app’s notification categories and use Notification history to identify the exact source.
- Check for duplicate email and push alerts. Disable the redundant channel in the app instead of muting every notification from the service.
You stopped an alert you actually need
- Restore the smallest unit you can identify: a direct-message category, a mentions category, a specific person or a single delivery surface.
- On iPhone, verify that the app is not included in Scheduled Summary when the alert must be immediate, and check whether a Focus is active.
- On Android, verify that the category is not set to Silent or blocked and that the device’s scheduled interruption mode is not filtering it.
- Send or wait for a controlled test message where possible, then observe whether it appears, sounds and shows on the lock screen as intended.
You want quiet nights but daytime alerts
Do not repeatedly toggle the app by hand. Use an iPhone Focus with an automatic schedule, or the corresponding scheduled interruption control on your Android device. Allow only the people and apps that may interrupt sleep, and keep ordinary community activity silent or blocked during that period.
Lock-screen text keeps pulling you back
On iPhone, set the app’s Show Previews to When Unlocked or Never. On Android, change the app’s lock-screen visibility using the wording supplied by your device. This preserves the notification’s existence without displaying the message content at a glance.
A compact setup checklist
- Open every noisy community app and disable recommendations, trends, reactions, live updates and marketing.
- Keep direct messages, necessary mentions, moderation, security and safety alerts where the app distinguishes them.
- Choose whether review-later items should be silent, badge-free, hidden from the lock screen or delivered in a batch.
- Use iPhone Scheduled Summary for selected apps and one or two deliberate review times.
- Use Focus on iPhone, or the equivalent scheduled interruption filter on Android, for work and sleep.
- On Android, inspect Notification history after a noisy period and adjust the responsible category.
- Spend one day checking for delayed important alerts, then restore only the missing category or person.
The result should be a phone that remains reachable for consequential communication while treating community activity as something you review on your schedule, not something that controls it.
