First identify where the buffering happens: OBS dropping frames usually points to the connection between your computer and YouTube; viewer-only buffering points to playback conditions or latency; and a choppy OBS preview or recording points to rendering or encoding load. Check OBS’s dropped-frames counter before changing settings, then follow the matching fix below.
Diagnose the kind of buffering first
“Buffering” can describe separate problems in the stream chain. OBS may struggle to send data to YouTube, the stream may arrive normally but buffer for some viewers, or your computer may be unable to render or encode smoothly. Each calls for a different fix.
| What you notice | Likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| The OBS dropped-frames counter rises | Connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate that exceeds stable upload capacity. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate (OBS Project). |
| OBS shows no dropped frames, but some viewers report buffering | Viewer network or device conditions, or the stream’s latency setting. One viewer’s problem does not establish that your upload to YouTube is failing. |
| OBS preview, stream output, or local recording is choppy | Rendering or encoding performance, including CPU or GPU load. |
OBS’s dropped-frame troubleshooting page is dated September 30, 2024. The distinctions between viewer buffering and encoding performance are also covered in OBS guidance from 2021 (buffering; encoding performance).
If OBS is dropping frames
Watch the dropped-frames counter at the bottom of OBS while streaming. If it rises, treat the problem first as an unstable or insufficient connection from your computer to the streaming server, not as proof that your computer needs an upgrade.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Reduce the bitrate in OBS. Open Settings → Output and lower the video bitrate, then test again. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee; use stable upload capacity rather than a best-case speed-test result. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup feeds where applicable. These are separate rules of thumb; keep adequate headroom and verify the stream remains stable (OBS; YouTube streaming tips).
- Use a wired connection if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Check cables and network equipment; restarting the modem or router may help with general connectivity problems. A cable is relevant when Wi-Fi or a faulty cable may be involved, not a universal fix.
- Test a different ingest server, if available. A different server or route can help reveal whether the issue is specific to one connection path. Trying another streaming service can serve as a diagnostic comparison, but does not by itself identify or fix the cause.
- Check software and network interference. Consider VPNs, firewall or antivirus software, bundled network-prioritization utilities, and outdated network drivers. Change one suspected factor at a time and retest so you can tell whether it mattered. OBS notes that some vendor network software can deprioritize OBS traffic.
- On Windows, test OBS network options cautiously. OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing, as well as dynamic bitrate adjustment. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality and does not repair the underlying connection; OBS labels the option beta in its troubleshooting article. Use these as tests, not substitutes for a stable route.
- Contact your ISP if the problem persists. Congestion or routing trouble may be outside your control, and OBS recommends asking the ISP for help after local checks.
Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate, and codec
YouTube’s live-encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Compare like with like; a recommended bitrate is not evidence that your connection can sustain it. The values below are YouTube’s current recommendations, checked October 3, 2026; the page inspected does not state a publication year (YouTube live encoder settings).
| Codec | Output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding, a keyframe interval of two seconds (not over four seconds), and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. OBS’s available settings and encoders depend on the installed version and hardware, so use only options your setup supports. Do not confuse YouTube’s minimum bitrate ranges with its recommended values.

If viewers buffer but OBS is not dropping frames
Ask whether the problem affects everyone or only particular viewers. YouTube transcodes live streams into playback formats, but viewers still have different networks and devices. Have affected viewers try another device or network, and check whether the problem is limited to a location or connection before changing your encoder settings.
Also review the latency setting in YouTube Live Control Room. Lower latency can mean more playback buffering, so decide whether reduced delay is worth that trade-off for your stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers viewer playback and stream checks (YouTube live stream troubleshooting).

If the OBS preview or recording is choppy
If the problem is already visible in OBS or a local archive, check the encoder and system load before treating it as an upload issue. YouTube advises checking encoder status, dashboard errors, CPU load, and a local archive; if encoder output looks healthy, investigate the outbound connection.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate; try 30 fps if 60 fps is unstable.
- Reduce game graphics load and simplify OBS scenes.
- Limit resource-heavy browser sources and filters.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator if GPU overload is the suspected cause.
These steps target rendering and encoding performance. They will not repair an unstable network route (OBS encoding-performance guidance; YouTube troubleshooting).

A practical retest sequence
- Note whether OBS is dropping frames, viewers alone are buffering, or the local output is choppy.
- Change the setting that matches the symptom: bitrate and connection for dropped frames; viewer playback and latency for viewer-only buffering; output and scene load for choppy local output.
- Retest, watching OBS’s dropped-frames counter and checking the stream from a viewer device.
- If the issue remains, test one other likely factor at a time, such as Wi-Fi versus wired networking or a different ingest server. This makes it easier to isolate the cause.
