To reduce overheating tonight, cool the bedroom, wear loose lightweight sleepwear, use removable layers of bedding, and avoid any personal triggers such as spicy food or caffeine. Those steps can make sleep more comfortable, but they cannot treat every cause. Sweating because a room, pajamas, or blankets are too warm is different from repeated episodes that soak your clothes or bedding in a cool room. Recurrent drenching sweats, especially with other symptoms, should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
First, decide whether the room is simply too warm
Normal sweating is expected when the bedroom is hot, your sleepwear does not breathe, or you are under too many blankets. NHS guidance and Mayo Clinic describe night sweats more specifically as soaking night clothes or bedding despite a cool sleeping environment.

Ask what was happening around the episode. Was the heating on, was the duvet unusually thick, or did you wear a warm layer to bed? Did you wake slightly damp, or did you need to change pajamas and sheets? An environmental explanation is more likely when cooling the room and removing a layer consistently solves the problem. Repeated drenching in a comfortably cool room deserves a different approach.
This distinction matters because changing the bedroom may solve an environmental problem, while repeated drenching episodes can reflect hormonal changes, a medicine effect, an infection, a metabolic or thyroid problem, a sleep disorder, anxiety, alcohol or other substances, hyperhidrosis, or another medical condition. The symptom by itself does not identify the cause, and night sweats alone do not mean you have cancer.

What you can do tonight
- Lower the room temperature and improve airflow. Use air conditioning, a fan, or an open window when safe and practical. Aim for a room that feels comfortably cool rather than uncomfortably cold. Keep the fan positioned so it circulates air without drying or irritating your eyes. If an open window brings in noise, pollution, allergens, or a security concern, use another safe way to ventilate.
- Switch to loose, lightweight sleepwear. Cotton or linen pajamas allow more airflow than tight or heavy synthetic garments. Choose a loose fit that does not trap fabric against your skin. Keep a dry change of clothes nearby so you do not have to search for them after waking.
- Use bedding in removable layers. Start with a lightweight sheet and add thin blankets that can be removed separately. A single thick duvet traps more heat and is harder to adjust when your temperature changes during the night. Put spare dry bedding where it is easy to reach, especially if changing sheets in the dark would fully wake you.
- Keep water within reach. A glass or bottle of cool water can make it easier to rehydrate after sweating. Sip normally rather than forcing large amounts at once. If you are repeatedly waking drenched, note how often it happens rather than trying to manage every episode with fluids alone.
- Identify food and drink triggers. Spicy foods and caffeine can trigger sweating for some people. Avoid them near bedtime for several nights and record whether the pattern changes. Alcohol and other substances can also contribute to sweating or fragmented sleep; mention their use to a clinician if episodes continue.
- Change damp fabric promptly. Wet pajamas and sheets can make you feel chilled after the sweating stops, which may lead you to pile on heavy bedding and start the cycle again. Keep spare sleepwear and a dry top sheet accessible. If you share a bed, agree in advance where replacement linens are stored so the process is less disruptive.
- Track the episode briefly. Write down the date, whether the room was cool, how wet the clothes or bedding became, medicines taken, alcohol or caffeine, menstrual or menopause-related changes, and any fever, cough, pain, diarrhoea, weight change, or other symptoms. A short record is more useful than guessing at a cause. Note whether you had to change clothes or bedding, since that helps distinguish mild dampness from a drenching episode.
- Remove only one variable at a time. If you change the room, pajamas, bedding, caffeine, and evening meal all at once, you may not know what helped. Make practical changes together when you need immediate comfort, but use your log over several nights to identify a consistent pattern.
Bedroom changes that improve comfort
Cooling accessories may help you feel more comfortable, but no mattress cover or pillow has been shown in the cited medical guidance to prevent or treat medically caused night sweats. If you buy one, evaluate it as a bedding product rather than as treatment.
| Option | What to check | What it can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Fan, open window, or air conditioning | Noise, airflow direction, humidity, electrical safety, and whether the room can remain comfortably cool | Reduces heat in the environment; does not address an internal cause |
| Loose cotton or linen sleepwear | Fit, breathability, seam comfort, and washability | Helps heat and moisture escape; will not stop hormone- or medicine-related sweating |
| Layered sheets and lightweight blankets | Ease of removing layers, laundering, and replacing damp pieces | Lets you adjust insulation during the night; cannot prevent a medical episode |
| Cooling-gel pillow or mattress cover | Construction, washable cover, mattress or pillow compatibility, temperature feel, noise, and return terms | May provide a cooler-feeling surface; evidence cited here does not establish treatment or prevention of night sweats |
Washability matters because repeated sweating leaves moisture and salts in fabric. Check the care label before buying a cover, and confirm that it fits your existing mattress or pillow without creating folds that disturb sleep. Consider whether the cover can be removed without moving the mattress and whether you have somewhere to dry it. A product that is difficult to launder may add work when episodes are frequent.
Also check the return policy and the product’s temperature feel. Some people prefer a surface that feels cool when they first lie down; others find a persistently cold or crinkly material uncomfortable. Noise from a cover, protector, or fan can fragment sleep even if it reduces heat. These are comfort and shopping considerations, not proof that a product changes the underlying sweating.
If a product feels cold at first but you still wake drenched, treat that as a sign to investigate the symptom rather than adding more cooling products. A cooling pillow cannot explain why the sweating began, and piling on products can make it harder to observe whether the room and bedding were actually contributing.
Common causes of waking hot or soaked
Menopause and perimenopause
Hot flashes at night are common during the menopause transition. Mayo Clinic explains that lower estrogen can affect the hypothalamus, the body’s temperature-regulating system. Small changes in perceived temperature may then trigger cooling responses such as sweating. Pregnancy and the postpartum period can also bring hormone changes that alter temperature regulation.
Patterns can vary: an episode may begin with a sudden feeling of heat, followed by sweating and then a chilled feeling when clothing becomes damp. Recording menstrual changes, pregnancy or postpartum status, the timing of hot flashes, and how much sleep is lost gives a clinician useful context. Do not assume that every warm awakening is a hot flash, however.

Do not assume that menopause explains every episode. Age, a suspected hot flash, or a familiar pattern does not rule out another problem. If symptoms disrupt sleep or daily activities, discuss them with a healthcare professional. Treatment may include hormone therapy or non-hormonal prescription options, but suitability depends on your health history, contraindications, other medicines, and preferences. A clinician can compare likely benefits and risks rather than treating hormone therapy as appropriate for everyone.
Medicines
Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines can cause sweating or change temperature regulation. NHS and Cleveland Clinic guidance recommends discussing a possible medicine effect with the prescriber. Do not stop, skip, or change a prescribed dose on your own; an abrupt change can create new risks or make the original condition worse.
Before an appointment, list every prescription, over-the-counter product, supplement, and recent dose change, including when you take each one. Include medicines that are taken only occasionally and note when the sweating began relative to a new product or dose. A clinician can decide whether a review, substitution, timing change, or separate evaluation is appropriate.
Infections and inflammatory illness
Night sweats can accompany infections, particularly when fever or chills are present. A cough, diarrhoea, localized pain, or a generally worsening illness makes medical review more important. Do not try to determine the infection from sweating alone. Record measured temperature if you have a reliable thermometer, but do not delay care because you cannot measure it during the night.
Metabolic, thyroid, and sleep-related conditions
NHS guidance includes low blood sugar and hyperhidrosis among possible reasons. Cleveland Clinic also lists metabolic or thyroid problems and sleep disorders. These conditions require different evaluations, so the pattern of sweating, other symptoms, medical history, and any relevant measurements matter more than the symptom in isolation.

Anxiety, alcohol, and other substances
Anxiety can increase arousal and sweating, while alcohol and other substances may affect sleep and temperature control. Record timing and amount honestly so a clinician can interpret the pattern. Avoid using alcohol as a sleep aid; it can fragment sleep even when it makes you drowsy initially.
If worry about sweating is keeping you awake, use a simple routine: cool the room, change damp fabric, take a few sips of water, and return to bed without repeatedly checking the clock. This may reduce distress, but persistent episodes still need assessment when they recur or come with other symptoms.
Less common but important conditions
Cancer or cancer treatment can be associated with night sweats, but sweating alone is not evidence of cancer. Persistent or drenching episodes should be assessed in context rather than self-diagnosed from an online list of causes. A clinician will consider your overall history, examination findings, medicines, and associated symptoms.

When to arrange a healthcare appointment
Arrange an appointment with a GP or other healthcare professional when any of the following applies:
- Soaking sweats recur, wake you, or continue despite a cool room and lighter bedding.
- You have a very high temperature or chills.
- Sweating occurs with a cough, diarrhoea, unexplained weight loss, localized pain, or another symptom that concerns you.
- The episodes began after starting or changing a medicine.
- Hot flashes or sweating are affecting sleep, work, mood, or daily activities.
- You are pregnant, recently postpartum, or have a significant medical condition and the pattern is new or worsening.
You do not need to wait until every night is affected before asking for help. Recurrent episodes that worry you are a reasonable reason to book an appointment, even when you cannot identify another symptom. Do not falsely reassure yourself based only on age or a suspected menopause pattern.
A clinician may ask about the environment, timing, menstrual or menopause status, pregnancy or postpartum status, medicines, substances, fever, weight change, and associated symptoms. They will decide whether examination or testing is needed. Bring your episode log and medicine list; these details can prevent an environmental explanation from being assumed too quickly.

When heavy sweating is an emergency
Mayo Clinic’s guidance on excessive sweating advises immediate medical attention when heavy sweating occurs with lightheadedness, chest pain, or nausea. These symptoms can signal a problem that should not be managed by changing bedding or waiting for the episode to pass. Seek emergency help according to your local service, especially if symptoms are severe, sudden, or accompanied by trouble breathing, fainting, confusion, or marked weakness.

If the room is hot and the sweating stops after cooling
Keep the room cooler, use breathable sleepwear, and maintain adjustable bedding. Continue observing the pattern. If the episodes become drenching, recur in a cool room, or acquire other symptoms, arrange a medical review. A resolved environmental episode does not guarantee that a later, different pattern has the same cause.
If you wake soaked despite a cool room
Record the episode and look for timing patterns rather than repeatedly adding cooling products. Review recent medicines, alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, illness, hormonal changes, and sleep symptoms with a healthcare professional. Note whether the bedding was actually wet and whether you had to change it; this description is more useful than simply writing “felt hot.”
If a new medicine seems connected
Contact the prescriber or pharmacist with the medicine name, dose, start date, and the date sweating began. Keep taking it as directed until you receive professional advice unless an emergency clinician instructs you otherwise. Ask whether any nonprescription products or supplements could interact with it or contribute to sweating.

If you are shopping for cooling bedding
Compare construction and material, washability, fit with your mattress or pillow, noise, temperature feel, and return terms. Treat marketing claims cautiously: a cooler-feeling surface may improve comfort, but it is not established treatment for a medical cause. Keep the receipt and reassess whether the product changes sleep quality without masking a recurring symptom.
Questions to take to your appointment
- Could my current medicines or supplements contribute to sweating?
- Does the pattern fit menopause, another hormone change, or an illness that needs testing?
- Which symptoms would require urgent care if they appear?
- What treatment options are appropriate for my health history and other medicines?
- How should I manage hydration, bedding, and sleep while the cause is being evaluated?
- Could alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, anxiety, or a sleep problem be contributing?
- What details should I record, and when should we review the pattern again?
The safest approach is two-track: use low-risk cooling measures for immediate comfort, while getting recurrent or symptom-associated drenching sweats assessed rather than trying to cure an unknown cause with bedroom products.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop night sweats tonight?
Cool the room with safe airflow or air conditioning, wear loose cotton or linen sleepwear, use removable bedding layers, keep water and dry clothes nearby, and avoid personal triggers such as spicy food or caffeine. These steps improve comfort but do not treat an underlying illness.
Why am I sweating in my sleep when the room is cool?
Repeated soaking sweats in a cool room can be linked to menopause or other hormone changes, medicines, infections, low blood sugar, thyroid or metabolic problems, sleep disorders, anxiety, alcohol or other substances, hyperhidrosis, and other conditions. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause, so recurrent episodes warrant medical review.
When should I worry about night sweats?
Arrange healthcare advice when drenching episodes recur, wake you, continue despite a cool room, or occur with fever or chills, cough, diarrhoea, unexplained weight loss, localized pain, or another concerning symptom. Heavy sweating with lightheadedness, chest pain, or nausea needs immediate medical attention.
Can menopause cause night sweats?
Yes. Lower estrogen during perimenopause and menopause can affect the hypothalamus and trigger hot flashes and sweating. Pregnancy and the postpartum period can also involve hormone changes. Do not assume menopause explains every new or severe episode; discuss disruptive symptoms with a clinician.
Should I stop a medicine that seems to cause sweating?
No. Do not stop, skip, or change a prescribed medicine without advice. Give the prescriber or pharmacist the medicine name, dose, start date, and timing of sweating so they can decide whether a review or adjustment is appropriate.

The Bottom Line
Cool air, breathable sleepwear, layered bedding, and avoiding personal triggers can ease overheating tonight. Recurrent drenching sweats in a cool room are different: track the pattern, review medicines with a prescriber, and arrange medical care—urgently if heavy sweating comes with lightheadedness, chest pain, or nausea.
