Meta’s official Meta AI how-to page says the feature appears automatically inside Facebook, as it does in Messenger and other Meta apps such as Instagram and WhatsApp. That explains why an ordinary conversation setting should not be treated as a master off switch: a chat can be managed separately from a feature integrated into the app. The distinction is especially important when an AI conversation is not visible in the same place as the search entry point.
In practical terms, separate the goal into three questions: Do you want to stop notifications? Do you want to stop or avoid an active voice interaction? Think of these options by outcome rather than by the word “off.” A mute option is about a conversation’s notifications. The WhatsApp voice controls apply to an active voice interaction. How to mute Meta AI in Instagram
The official material does not establish a current Meta AI-specific Instagram menu path. An Associated Press guide published on May 30, 2024 described muting from the Meta AI chat’s information screen, but that is historical guidance and may not match Instagram’s current interface.
- Open the Meta AI chat in Instagram, if it appears in your messages.
- Open the chat’s information or settings screen.
- Choose Mute only if that control is offered, then review the options shown in your app.
- Return to the conversation settings if you need to confirm what was selected.
This is a conditional check, not a guaranteed current path. A muted chat should not be confused with removal of the AI entry point from search or the rest of Instagram. The 2024 AP directions can help you know which general kind of screen to inspect, but an older screenshot or menu label is not proof that your current version has the same option.
If no Meta AI conversation appears in your messages, or you do not see a mute setting on its information screen, do not infer that there is a hidden universal Instagram switch elsewhere. The current official material does not provide an exact Instagram-specific procedure for disabling Meta AI. Mute or end an active voice session
If you are in a Meta AI voice conversation, use the mute or end control shown in that active session. WhatsApp says, “Talking with Meta AI and sending voice prompts is optional.” Its Help Center explains that voice prompting requires microphone permission and active use of the feature. If you do not want to use voice, do not start a voice interaction; if one is already active, mute or end it using the session controls.
These controls are about the live voice interaction, not about the existence of Meta AI in WhatsApp. Muting the session and ending it are also different outcomes: mute changes the active voice interaction, while end stops that session. Follow the label shown in the current session and choose the one that fits what you want. Neither option should be described as removing the AI chat or a built-in WhatsApp entry point.

Microphone permission is part of the voice-use explanation, not a universal Meta AI off switch. The official wording says voice prompting requires both permission and active use. If you are not using a voice prompt, the documented voice feature is not being activated merely by the existence of an AI entry point on screen. If your concern is an active voice session, use the session controls rather than relying on a general chat mute.

For ordinary conversation notifications, a universal current tap sequence was not established in official information. Open the Meta AI conversation’s information or settings screen and use a mute option if your version offers one. This affects the chat’s notifications, not the presence of the integrated AI control.
Do not confuse a chat mute with the voice-session mute. The former concerns notifications from the conversation, if WhatsApp offers it in that chat’s settings. The latter is a control for an active voice interaction. If you mute a conversation but still see Meta AI elsewhere in WhatsApp, that does not by itself mean the mute failed; the entry point and the conversation are separate parts of the experience.
Delete a chat or request deletion of shared information

Accounts Center may be relevant when managing a connected account experience, but that general role does not make it a Meta AI removal panel.
