To stop Maps suggestions, change the setting that matches what you see: Google Maps place recommendations use Google Account personalization controls, Apple Maps predicted routes and destinations have their own switches, and old searches must be cleared separately. These settings affect different things, so you usually do not need to turn off all location access.
First, identify which kind of suggestion you want to stop
“Suggestions” can mean recommended places, a predicted destination or route, a previous search appearing again, or a notification. The steps below address Google Maps recommendations and Incognito mode, plus Apple Maps predictions, Visited Places, and recent searches. Clearing old entries does not by itself switch off future personalization.
- Recommended places: Change Google Maps personalization settings.
- Predicted destinations or routes: Turn off the matching Apple Maps feature.
- Old searches or visited places: Clear the relevant history; disable recording as well if you do not want new entries saved.
Stop personalized place recommendations in Google Maps
Google says Maps may recommend places you might like when Search Services Personalised Recommendations is on. Its support guidance identifies account personalization, Search services history, Timeline, and device information as possible signals. Change the account controls if you want to limit future personalized recommendations rather than simply erase a search.
- Open Google’s Maps recommendations help page and follow its current directions to the relevant Activity Controls.
- Look for Search Services Personalised Recommendations and related Search services history controls, then turn off or adjust the option that matches your preference.
- If those named controls are not available in your account, review Web & App Activity. Google says settings are rolling out gradually and that Web & App Activity continues to govern history and personalized recommendations where the newer Search services controls do not match.
Google’s Transparency Center says you can “adjust your experience or turn off personalized recommendations on Google Maps by changing the settings on the Activity Controls page.” See its policy and transparency page. The exact labels may differ during the gradual rollout.

Use Google Maps without personalization for one session
If you only want to avoid personalized suggestions temporarily, turn on Incognito mode in Google Maps. Tap your profile image and choose Turn on Incognito mode. Google says searches and places navigated to while Incognito is active are not saved to your Google Account, the session does not update Location History, and personalized features such as restaurant recommendations are not shown. Google describes these changes in its Incognito mode and Timeline update and Maps controls guide.
Incognito is a session setting, not a history deletion tool: it does not erase activity saved before you enabled it. Turn it off when you want Maps to resume the normal signed-in experience.

Turn off predicted destinations in Apple Maps
On iPhone, Apple provides separate switches for Visited Places and Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations. To change them, open Settings > Apps > Maps > Allow Maps to Access > Location > Allow More Location Access, then turn off the relevant option. Apple explains how Maps uses location and predicted destinations in its Maps & Privacy notice.
- Turn off Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations to stop that future prediction behavior.
- Turn off Visited Places if you do not want Maps to record visited locations going forward.
Menu labels and nesting can vary by iOS version. Apple’s privacy notice describes the available features; its current iPhone guidance is in Keep your location history private in Maps. Turning off all Maps location access is broader than necessary for these controls and can remove location-dependent functions, including turn-by-turn navigation.

Remove Apple Maps visited places or recent searches
Clear visited-place history
In Maps, you can remove an individual visited place or clear the visited-place history. Apple says Visited Places can appear on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Deleting past records does not prevent future records if Visited Places remains enabled, so turn off that setting too if you want to stop new entries. Apple’s history privacy instructions cover both disabling and clearing this data.
Clear recent searches on iPhone or iPad
Open Maps, scroll to Recent, then clear one item or all recent searches. This removes search-interface history; it is separate from switching off predicted destinations or future visited-place recording.

Clear recent searches on Mac
In Maps, scroll to Recent in the sidebar and click Clear Recents. This clears the recent-search list, not the settings that determine future suggestions.

If suggestions continue
- Google Maps still shows recommendations: Confirm the account you use in Maps and review the available Activity Controls. The Search Services labels may not have reached your account yet.
- Apple Maps still anticipates a destination: Check Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations specifically; clearing Recent searches addresses a different feature.
- An old entry returns or remains elsewhere: Distinguish a recent search from Visited Places and from a prediction. Clear the matching history and disable its recording or prediction feature if you want the behavior to stop in the future.
