In iOS 26, start in Messages > Filters and check both Spam and Unknown Senders. If the message is in Spam, open it, tap Not Spam, then choose Move to Inbox (or Move to Inbox and Report Not Spam). If it is in Unknown Senders, mark the sender as known or add the number or email address to Contacts. For broad screening, turn off Screen Unknown Senders under Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering.
These actions change where a message appears; they do not prove that the sender or a link is safe. Verify unexpected requests independently before responding.

First identify which protection feature caught the message
iOS 26 uses two different destinations for messages that do not immediately appear in your normal conversation list. They have different fixes, so changing a setting before checking both can leave the real problem unresolved.
Spam
On-device spam detection can automatically move a message that it identifies as spam into the Spam folder. Filter Spam is on by default in iOS 26, and messages placed there do not trigger notifications. A legitimate message can therefore appear to have vanished even though it is stored on the phone.

Unknown Senders
Unknown Senders is separate from Spam. It is intended for messages from numbers or email addresses that are not recognized as known contacts. A message can remain in this folder until you mark the sender as known or add the sender to Contacts. The sender may be legitimate even though the number is new to you.
Neither folder
If a message from a particular, otherwise known sender is in neither location, check whether the sender is blocked. A block is broader than message filtering and can prevent delivery altogether.

Restore a legitimate message from Spam
Restoring one message is the least disruptive fix when the problem is an isolated false positive. It does not turn off spam protection for future messages.

- Open the Messages app.
- Tap Filters.
- Tap Spam.
- Open the message you were expecting.
- Tap Not Spam.
- Choose Move to Inbox. If offered, you can instead choose Move to Inbox and Report Not Spam.
After the move, the conversation appears in the normal conversation list. The report-not-spam option tells the filtering system that this message was classified incorrectly; it is not the same as blocking or unblocking a sender.
Why restoring one message is usually preferable to disabling Filter Spam
Apple also provides a control at Settings > Apps > Messages for turning Filter Spam on or off. Turning it off affects future filtering, not just the message you are trying to recover. If only one expected text was misplaced, restore that message first and use the report-not-spam choice when it is available.
What happens to notifications?
A message in Spam does not produce the ordinary notification banner or sound. That is why checking the folder manually matters when you are waiting for a text such as an appointment update or delivery notice. A missing alert does not prove that no message arrived; open both filtered folders before asking the sender to try again.
Let one legitimate sender through Unknown Senders
Use this route when the message is in Messages > Filters > Unknown Senders rather than Spam.
- Open Messages and tap Filters.
- Tap Unknown Senders.
- Select the conversation from the legitimate number or email address.
- Tap Mark as Known.
Alternatively, tap the number or email address at the top of the conversation and create a contact. Either action identifies the sender for future filtering. Until you mark the sender as known or add them to Contacts, later messages from that sender may continue to remain in Unknown Senders.
When adding a contact is the better choice
Create a contact when you expect an ongoing relationship, such as a school, clinic, delivery service or workplace. Marking a conversation as known is quicker for a one-time exchange. Both options address recognition; neither confirms that the sender’s identity or the content is trustworthy.

Check the exact address before saving it
Some organizations use a short code, an email address or several telephone numbers. Look at the address shown at the top of the conversation, not just the display name. Save the actual address that sent the message. Adding a different number for the same organization will not necessarily change how the current conversation is categorized.
Stop screening all unknown senders
If messages from many new numbers are being diverted, change the global screening control rather than processing conversations one by one.
- Open Messages.
- Tap Filters.
- Tap Manage Filtering.
- Turn off Screen Unknown Senders.
Apple also documents the equivalent control under Settings > Apps > Messages. With screening off, messages from numbers and addresses that are not recognized as known are no longer separated by this feature.
Why your iPhone may have screening enabled after an upgrade
In iOS 26, Screen Unknown Senders is off by default. The exception is an iPhone that had Filter Unknown Senders enabled in iOS 18; that preference can carry forward when the device is upgraded. If the setting appears enabled unexpectedly, the older preference is a likely explanation.
When not to disable it
Keeping screening on can reduce interruptions from unsolicited texts. If you receive many unknown messages but only need a few urgent alerts, use the notification-category controls instead of removing the filter entirely.
Keep screening on while allowing important alerts
Apple says you can choose notification categories for some unknown senders. Depending on your country or region, these controls can allow alerts for time-sensitive messages such as verification codes while other unknown messages remain screened.

- Look for the categories or Allow Notifications options for unknown senders.
- Enable the categories you need, such as time-sensitive texts.
- Leave the broader unknown-sender screening enabled if you still want messages separated from your main list.
The exact categories and SMS, MMS or RCS filtering features vary by country or region. Filtering extensions installed on the iPhone can also add their own categories, so two devices on the same iOS release may show different choices.
Why the option may not appear
Notification categories are not identical worldwide. Apple notes that availability depends on country or region, message type and any filtering extensions installed on the device. If you cannot find a category mentioned in a guide, use the controls that actually appear under Manage Filtering and in Messages settings rather than assuming the feature is broken.

Check whether the sender is blocked
A blocked sender is not merely sorted into another folder. Blocking prevents messages from being delivered and applies across several Apple apps.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Blocked Contacts.
- Look for the sender’s phone number or email address.
- Remove it from the blocked list if it was added by mistake.
Apple says a contact blocked in Messages is also blocked in Mail, Phone, FaceTime, Calendar and other Apple apps. If you remove the block, ask the sender to send the message again; a message that was never delivered cannot be recovered from Spam or Unknown Senders.
Reporting spam is not the same as blocking
Using a report-not-spam or spam-reporting control does not automatically block the sender. Reporting and blocking are separate actions. If you want to stop a sender from contacting you, use the blocked-contact controls explicitly; if you only want to correct a false classification, restore the message without blocking.
Troubleshoot a message that still does not appear
Check both folders in the same session
Open Messages > Filters, inspect Spam, then inspect Unknown Senders. Looking in only one folder can make the two systems seem interchangeable when they are not.
Confirm the exact address
Businesses may send from a short code, a different telephone number or an email address rather than the address you saved. Compare the address at the top of the conversation with the contact entry you expected. If it is a new address, mark that conversation as known or create a contact for the actual address.
Review blocking before changing spam settings
If one known sender is missing from both folders, go directly to Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts. Disabling spam filtering will not make a blocked message arrive.

Ask for a resend after changing delivery controls
After unblocking a sender or changing screening, request a new message. This distinguishes a current delivery problem from an earlier message that was never delivered or was deleted elsewhere.
Consider notification behavior
A message can be present in a filtered folder without producing a normal notification. Check the folder itself rather than relying on a banner or sound to prove that no message arrived.
Do not assume a missing message was filtered
If neither folder contains the conversation and the sender is not blocked, the filtering controls covered here may not be the cause. Confirm the sender used the correct number or email address, then request a new message after reviewing your settings. These steps separate a filtering issue from a delivery issue without unnecessarily disabling protection.

Verify a message after you recover it
Filtering decisions are not identity checks. Before following a link, sending a payment, sharing a verification code or changing an account password, validate the request through a trusted route.

- Open the organization’s official app or type its known web address yourself.
- Contact a person or business using a number already stored in your records.
- Treat urgency, threats, unusual payment requests and requests for one-time codes as warning signs.
- Remember that a message can be moved from Spam or marked known and still be fraudulent.
iOS 26, regional availability and changing menu names
The recovery paths and default behaviors described here are documented for iOS 26. Apple can move controls or rename them in later releases, so the labels on a newer version may differ.
Apple’s user guidance notes that notification categories and some SMS, MMS and RCS filtering features vary by country or region. Filtering extensions can introduce additional categories as well. If an option in this guide is missing, check the controls shown under Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering and Settings > Apps > Messages for your region and installed extensions.
Why two iPhones can show different controls
Even when both devices run iOS 26, regional support, carrier message types and installed filtering extensions can change the available choices. One phone may show categories for certain alerts while another shows only the basic folders. Use the labels on your own device as the final guide and avoid changing unrelated settings just to match a screenshot.
Choosing the least disruptive fix
Use the narrowest change that solves the problem. A single false positive calls for Not Spam and Move to Inbox. A recurring sender belongs in known senders or Contacts. A phone receiving a large volume of legitimate new-number messages may justify disabling Screen Unknown Senders, but that is a broader trade-off. If verification texts are the only concern, try the available notification categories first.
This order preserves as much filtering as possible while correcting the specific classification. It also makes troubleshooting easier: after each change, ask the sender to send a fresh message and note whether it appears in the conversation list, a filtered folder or nowhere at all.
A practical order of operations
- Open Messages > Filters.
- Check Spam; restore the message with Not Spam and Move to Inbox if it is there.
- Check Unknown Senders; mark the sender as known or add the address to Contacts.
- If neither folder contains a message from one particular sender, inspect Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts.
- Only if many legitimate unknown senders are affected, decide whether to turn off Screen Unknown Senders.
- If you still want screening, configure the available notification categories for urgent unknown messages.
- Ask the sender to resend and independently verify any consequential request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I look first for a legitimate text that disappeared?
Open Messages, tap Filters, and inspect both Spam and Unknown Senders. Spam uses on-device detection and normally gives no notification; Unknown Senders holds messages from numbers or email addresses that are not recognized. The folders have different controls, so checking only one can miss the message.
Does tapping Not Spam automatically put the message back in my conversations?
No. Open the message in Spam, tap Not Spam, and then choose Move to Inbox. If your iPhone offers Move to Inbox and Report Not Spam, that option both restores the conversation and reports the classification error. This does not disable Filter Spam for other messages.
How can I keep one business or clinic from being treated as an unknown sender?

Usually not. Filter Spam is enabled by default in iOS 26, and turning it off changes future filtering. Restore the individual message first and use the report-not-spam choice when available. Disable the broader setting only if you intentionally want to change how future suspected spam is handled.
Why is Screen Unknown Senders on when iOS 26 says it is normally off?
The setting is normally off in iOS 26, but an iPhone that had Filter Unknown Senders enabled in iOS 18 can carry that preference forward during an upgrade. Check Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering or Settings > Apps > Messages before assuming the phone changed the setting by itself.
Will reporting a message as spam block that sender?
No. Reporting and blocking are separate actions. Reporting or reporting a message as not spam addresses its classification. To stop delivery from a sender, review Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts and remove or add the address as appropriate.
What if I need verification codes but still want unknown-sender screening?

No. Moving a message to the inbox, marking a sender known or adding a contact changes filtering, not identity. Independently open the organization’s official app or website, use a trusted phone number and treat urgent payment, password or one-time-code requests as potential scams.
