1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo stop a specific iPhone app from using cellular data, open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data or Mobile Service in some regions), find the app, and turn its switch off. Apple says that app will then use Wi‑Fi only for that service. The app remains installed and can still use the internet whenever the iPhone is connected to Wi‑Fi.
For broader control, turn off or restrict Background App Refresh, or enable Low Data Mode for the relevant cellular line. These settings are not interchangeable: the first blocks one app’s cellular connection, the second limits one background-refresh mechanism, and the third asks iOS and apps to reduce several kinds of network activity.

Block cellular data for one app
This is the clearest fix when one app is responsible for unexpected usage. It does not disable the app, delete its data, or prevent it from working on Wi‑Fi.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular. Depending on your iOS version, country, or language, this may be labeled Mobile Data or Mobile Service.
- Scroll to the app list. The figures beside apps show the amount recorded by the iPhone for the current statistics period.
- Turn off the switch beside every app that should work only over Wi‑Fi.
- When prompted by your situation rather than by iOS, remember that the app may not connect at all when Wi‑Fi is unavailable. Re-enable the switch if you need that app to work over cellular again.
Apple documents this per-app control in its cellular data settings guide. The restriction applies to that app’s cellular access; it is not a promise that no other iPhone service, notification path, or app will use mobile data.

What changes after you switch an app off
- The app can connect while the iPhone is on Wi‑Fi.
- It cannot use the selected cellular line when Wi‑Fi is absent.
- Features that depend on a live connection, such as syncing, media loading, or cloud updates, may wait until Wi‑Fi is available.
- The app itself is not closed, removed, or prevented from opening.
If several apps are consuming data, repeat the switch-off step for each one rather than relying only on a whole-device setting. That gives you a precise list of which apps may use cellular data.
Which iPhone control should you use?
Choose the setting according to whether you want to restrict one app, one type of background activity, or more network activity across the device.
| Control | Scope | Cellular behavior | Possible side effects | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| App cellular switch | One selected app at a time | The app’s service uses Wi‑Fi only when the switch is off | That app may stop syncing or loading while you are away from Wi‑Fi | Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data/Mobile Service) |
| Background App Refresh | Background-refresh checks by suspended apps | Choose Off, or Wi‑Fi where that option is offered | Apps may not check for updates or new content until opened | Settings > General > Background App Refresh |
| Low Data Mode | Broader iOS and app network behavior on a selected line | Asks apps and system services to reduce data activity | Automatic downloads, backups, updates, iCloud activity, and streaming quality may change | Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Low Data Mode; on some 5G iPhones, Settings > Cellular > Data Mode |
Background App Refresh and Low Data Mode are broader but less exact than the per-app switch. If you must guarantee that a named app cannot use the cellular connection, use the app-level control first.
Restrict background checks with Background App Refresh
Background App Refresh lets suspended apps check for updates and new content. Apple describes the feature in its guide to switching apps on iPhone. It is separate from every other form of background networking, so changing it is useful but is not a blanket firewall.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Background App Refresh.
- Tap Background App Refresh again if iOS shows a submenu.
- Select Off to disable the feature, or select Wi‑Fi if your iPhone offers that choice and you want refreshes to occur only on Wi‑Fi.
Some iOS versions also show individual app switches on this screen. Turning off a particular app there prevents its Background App Refresh checks, but it does not necessarily block notifications, a user-initiated download, location-related activity, or another network function supplied by the app. For the strongest restriction on that app’s cellular connection, turn off its cellular switch under Settings > Cellular as well.

When Off is preferable to Wi‑Fi
Choose Off when you want suspended apps to wait until you open them. Choose Wi‑Fi when you still want them to prepare content at home or work without spending cellular data. The exact options shown depend on the iOS release and device configuration.
Use Low Data Mode for a broader reduction
Low Data Mode is useful when you want iOS and apps to scale back several kinds of network activity rather than manually changing dozens of app switches. Apple lists its behavior and routes in Use Low Data Mode on your iPhone and iPad.

5G path
On some 5G configurations, the setting appears as Data Mode. Open Settings > Cellular, select the data line if necessary, tap Data Mode, and choose the low-data option shown by your iPhone. Apple’s labels and available choices can vary with the carrier, plan, region, and device.
What Low Data Mode can change
Low Data Mode can pause or reduce automatic updates and background tasks. Depending on the app and service, it may reduce streaming quality, stop automatic downloads, delay backups, and pause some iCloud updates. It is therefore a convenience setting for a constrained data plan, not a surgical way to stop one app.
Because it changes behavior beyond background refresh, check important apps after enabling it. A podcast, photo library, cloud-drive client, or video service may wait for Wi‑Fi even though its individual cellular switch remains on. Disable Low Data Mode on the same line when normal automatic behavior is needed again.

Check which apps are using data
The Cellular settings page is an audit tool as well as a control panel. Scroll through the list to see which apps have accumulated usage, then turn off access for apps that do not need a cellular connection. If your version shows Show All, tap it to expand the list.

Reset the iPhone’s local statistics
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- Scroll to the bottom of the usage list.
- Tap Reset Statistics.
- Confirm the reset when iOS asks.
Reset immediately after a billing-cycle boundary if you want the iPhone’s next period to approximate that cycle. A reset only clears the device-side counters; it does not alter your carrier’s records or erase the carrier’s billing history.
Why the number may not match your bill
The iPhone can show a current-period total based on when its local statistics were last reset, while a carrier measures its own billing period. Those dates may differ, and network accounting can also differ. Apple says the carrier is the most accurate source for the current-period total, so use carrier records when disputing a charge or checking the amount that will appear on a bill.
Check the correct line on a Dual SIM iPhone
With two SIMs or eSIM lines, cellular settings can apply to the selected data line. Before interpreting usage or changing an option, open Settings > Cellular and verify which line is selected for cellular data. A restriction applied while viewing one line does not automatically explain usage recorded on the other.
Review the line selector, then inspect the app list and line-specific options again. If you change the default data line later, repeat the review for the newly selected line. This prevents the common mistake of turning off access on a secondary line while the iPhone is actually using the primary line for data.

Why data can appear when you think you are on Wi‑Fi
Wi‑Fi Assist or Connectivity Assist
When Wi‑Fi has a poor connection, the iPhone may use cellular data to keep internet access working. Apple calls this feature Wi‑Fi Assist in its support documentation and documents related behavior as Connectivity Assist in some newer guides. See About Wi‑Fi Assist and Connect iPhone to the internet.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data/Mobile Service).
- Scroll toward the bottom and locate Wi‑Fi Assist or the equivalent connectivity setting.
- Turn it off if you do not want cellular fallback when Wi‑Fi is weak.
With fallback disabled, a weak Wi‑Fi network may simply become slow or unusable instead of silently consuming cellular data. This setting affects the phone’s transition between networks; it does not replace the per-app cellular switches.
System Services
The Cellular page can show a System Services section with categories of system traffic. Use it to identify whether the usage is associated with iOS functions rather than an installed app. Apple does not provide a switch to disable each System Services category individually from that list. Consequently, identifying a category does not always produce a matching off switch.
Activity other than Background App Refresh
Background App Refresh covers suspended apps checking for updates and content. Other iOS features and app-specific services may have separate network behavior. A messaging notification, location-related function, an upload that was already in progress, or a task initiated before the app was closed can therefore appear even after Background App Refresh is disabled. If a named app must not use cellular data, its Cellular switch is the decisive setting.

Troubleshoot common cases
An app still uses data after Background App Refresh is off
- Open Settings > Cellular and turn off that app’s cellular switch.
- Check whether Wi‑Fi Assist or Connectivity Assist is enabled.
- Look at the app’s own settings for automatic downloads, media quality, or sync options.
- Reset local statistics only after recording the old figures, so you can observe the next period clearly.
Turning off Background App Refresh alone limits one mechanism; it does not guarantee that every app process is offline.
Best Value
Usage appears under the wrong app or line
Verify the selected cellular line on a Dual SIM phone, then expand the app list with Show All if available. Check System Services separately. Finally, compare the device counters with the carrier’s current-period record rather than assuming both periods began on the same date.
You need maps, messages, or authentication to work away from Wi‑Fi
Do not use Low Data Mode or a blanket Background App Refresh shutdown as your only control if those apps must remain reachable. Leave cellular access enabled for the essential apps and disable it for high-volume apps such as video, photo backup, or large-file transfer tools. You can still turn off Background App Refresh for nonessential apps.
You want the smallest possible change
Use the per-app switch. It changes one app’s cellular access without changing streaming quality, automatic downloads, backups, or other apps’ behavior. Broaden the restriction only if the app-level audit does not identify the source or if you need a general data-saving policy.
A practical setup for a limited data plan
- Audit first: Open Settings > Cellular and note the highest-usage apps.
- Block obvious consumers: Turn off cellular access for apps that can wait for Wi‑Fi.
- Choose a refresh policy: Set Background App Refresh to Off or Wi‑Fi when suspended-app checks are unnecessary.
- Use Low Data Mode when appropriate: Enable it on the line with the constrained plan, understanding that downloads, backups, updates, and streaming may change.
- Prevent fallback: Disable Wi‑Fi Assist or Connectivity Assist if weak Wi‑Fi is causing unexpected cellular use.
- Measure a clean period: Reset Statistics at the start of your chosen tracking period and compare the result with the carrier’s records.
- Recheck after travel or SIM changes: On a Dual SIM iPhone, confirm the active data line before drawing conclusions from the counters.
What iOS cannot promise
No single switch guarantees that every byte of mobile data will stop while cellular service remains enabled. The app-level switch is the narrowest and strongest control for a named app, but system services, network fallback, and other iOS features have their own settings or reporting categories. Background App Refresh is specifically about suspended apps checking for updates; it should not be treated as a universal “no background networking” mode.
Likewise, Low Data Mode reduces network activity but may defer or alter useful features. If a delayed backup, lower streaming quality, or postponed cloud update would cause a problem, use selective app switches instead and leave Low Data Mode off until you need its broader trade-offs.
Bottom line
Start with Settings > Cellular and switch off cellular access for each app that should use Wi‑Fi only. Add Background App Refresh > Off or Wi‑Fi when you want to limit suspended-app checks, and use Low Data Mode when a wider reduction in automatic network activity is acceptable. Check Wi‑Fi Assist or Connectivity Assist, verify the active line on Dual SIM phones, and use carrier records for billing-accurate totals.
