On an Android phone, turn off Gemini’s screen access at Gemini > profile picture or initial > Settings > Screen context, then disable both Use text from screen and Use screenshot. If Gemini Live is already sharing your display, stop that session separately with Turn off screen sharing in Gemini or Stop sharing in Android’s notification shade. If Gemini keeps appearing over other apps, change the phone’s default digital assistant; that setting controls how Gemini launches, not what Screen context can read.
First identify what Gemini is doing
Several Android features can look like the same privacy problem, but they use different controls. Gemini may use visible content when it is opened as an overlay over another app; this is ordinary screen-context behavior. Gemini Live can also share the entire display during an explicitly started screen-sharing session. Separately, Gemini can launch over another app when you say Hey Google or use a gesture such as holding the power button. A fourth setting controls whether Gemini can respond while the phone is locked.

- Open the Gemini mobile app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the app.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Screen context.
- Switch off Use text from screen.
- Switch off Use screenshot.
Turn off both switches. The first controls the use of text Gemini can identify on the visible screen. The second controls use of a screenshot. Leaving either one enabled can leave part of the screen-context feature available.
Why there are two switches
Screen context is designed for situations in which Gemini is opened over another app and can use what is displayed to answer a question. Google also describes Intelligent Screen Context, which can infer when visible content should be used in a conversation. Disabling both documented switches is the practical way to disable that screen-content behavior.
Screen actions and Intelligent Screen Context availability can depend on language. Google specifies Intelligent Screen Context for Gemini in English, so menus or behavior may differ when another language is selected. App and Android updates can also move or rename controls.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat this change does not do
Turning off Screen context does not stop Gemini from opening as an assistant. You may still see the Gemini overlay after Hey Google, a power-button gesture, or another assistant shortcut. It also does not end an already active Gemini Live screen share. Those are separate actions described below.
End a Gemini Live screen-sharing session
Gemini Live screen sharing is an explicit session in which Google says the full screen is shared. It is separate from ordinary Screen context, so disabling the two Screen context switches will not necessarily terminate a share that is already running.
- Return to the active Gemini Live conversation.
- Tap Turn off screen sharing in Gemini.
- If Gemini is not in the foreground, swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open Android’s notification shade.
- Find the Screen Sharing card and tap Stop sharing.
After stopping, check the notification shade again. The screen-sharing card should no longer offer an active stop control. If Gemini still appears as a small panel over another app but there is no sharing card, you are dealing with assistant invocation or an overlay, not an ongoing Live share.
Do not confuse a share with screen context
A Live share is an active, user-started broadcast of the full display. Screen context is a standing preference that lets Gemini use screen text or a screenshot when you invoke it. One can be disabled while the other remains enabled. For example, you can stop a Live session immediately and still leave Screen context on for a later conversation, or turn off Screen context while a previously started Live share still needs to be stopped.

If you are unsure which mode is active, look for Android’s Screen Sharing notification. That notification is the clearest sign that a full-display session is still running. A Gemini panel by itself does not prove that the entire screen is being shared.
Stop Gemini from launching over other apps
If the unwanted behavior is that Gemini itself opens whenever you use another app, change which app Android treats as the default digital assistant. Gemini can appear as an on-screen overlay when activated by Hey Google or a device gesture such as holding the power button. The default-assistant choice determines which assistant receives that invocation.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Open Apps. Some Android versions place this under a similarly named apps or applications section.
- Choose Default apps.
- Open the entry named Digital assistant app, Default digital assistant, or a similar label.
- Select another available assistant, or choose None if your device offers that option.
Google notes that the exact setting name and location can vary by Android device. On some phones, the assistant selector is reached through a search for default apps or assistant in Settings rather than through the same menu path. The important control is the one that chooses the device’s default digital assistant.
Check the result without confusing it with Screen context
Use the phone gesture or voice phrase that previously opened Gemini. If another assistant opens, or nothing opens when you selected None, the launch route has changed. That result says nothing about the Screen context switches: those remain controlled inside Gemini’s own settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Gemini still launches, check for a second invocation method. A manufacturer may assign the power button, a corner swipe, a navigation-bar gesture, or a headset shortcut independently. Disable or reassign that shortcut in the phone’s gesture or button settings if it is available. The default-assistant setting remains the main Android control for which assistant receives a standard assistant invocation.
Why changing the default assistant is not a privacy shortcut
Selecting another default assistant changes who answers an assistant invocation. It does not switch off Gemini’s Use text from screen or Use screenshot options. Likewise, turning off those Screen context options does not prevent Gemini from being selected as the default assistant. If you want both behaviors changed, perform both separate configurations and test both separately.
Block Gemini access from the lock screen
Lock-screen access is controlled separately from both Screen context and assistant selection. If your concern is that Gemini answers before the phone is unlocked, change the Gemini on lock screen setting.

- Open the Gemini app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Gemini on lock screen.
- Turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
This prevents the specific use of Gemini without unlocking. It does not stop a Gemini Live screen share that you started while unlocked, and it does not select a different default assistant for the unlocked phone.
Test this setting while the device is actually locked, not merely while the display is dimmed. If Gemini still appears after unlocking, that is an unlocked assistant or Screen context issue and must be checked in the corresponding menu.
Choose the fix from the symptom
| If you see or hear this | Do this first | Then verify |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini uses information from the app currently on screen | Disable both Screen context switches in Gemini | Reopen Screen context and confirm both switches remain off |
| A recording or sharing indicator is visible | Use Turn off screen sharing in Gemini or Stop sharing on the Screen Sharing notification | The Screen Sharing card is no longer active |
| Gemini appears immediately after Hey Google or a button gesture | Change the Android default digital assistant | Repeat the same invocation and check which assistant responds |
| Gemini responds while the phone is locked | Disable Use Gemini without unlocking | Lock the phone and try the same lock-screen action |
When a control is missing or seems ineffective
The Screen context menu is not where expected
Confirm that you are in the Gemini mobile app on Android, not a web browser or a different Google settings page. Open the profile menu, choose Settings, and look for Screen context. Labels can change with app and Android versions, and available screen actions can depend on language. Updating the Gemini app and Android can restore a current menu layout, but the wording may still differ by device.
Gemini stopped reading the screen but still opens
This is expected when Screen context is disabled but Gemini remains the default assistant. Screen context governs use of visible content; the default digital assistant governs launch over other apps. Change the default assistant as described above if the overlay itself is the problem.
A sharing indicator remains after changing Screen context
Screen context does not terminate Gemini Live. Stop the live session from Gemini or from Android’s Screen Sharing notification. Once the share is stopped, the ordinary Screen context switches still need to be configured separately if you also want to block screen-content use in future conversations.

Reopen Gemini’s Settings and check Gemini on lock screen, not Screen context. The switch to disable is Use Gemini without unlocking. This setting addresses access before unlocking and is independent of the unlocked-screen assistant choice.
The phone uses different menu names
Android manufacturers customize Settings. Search the Settings app for default digital assistant, digital assistant app, or assistant, then inspect the default-apps result. Google specifically cautions that the setting label can vary across devices, so an exact word-for-word path cannot be guaranteed for every phone.

You changed a setting but cannot tell what happened
Test one behavior at a time. First open an ordinary app containing text and invoke Gemini; this tests Screen context. Next check whether a Screen Sharing card appears; this tests Live sharing. Then repeat the gesture or phrase that used to open Gemini; this tests the default assistant. Finally lock the phone and try the lock-screen trigger. Testing each route separately prevents a successful change in one area from being mistaken for a failure in another.

- You need the Gemini mobile app on an Android phone and access to the phone’s Settings app.
- No accessory or physical privacy product is required. A privacy screen protector changes viewing angles for people nearby but does not disable Gemini’s software controls or stop Live screen sharing.
- The Screen context controls address Gemini’s use of visible screen text and screenshots. They are not a general replacement for reviewing other Gemini account, microphone, notification, or app-permission settings.
- Live screen sharing is an explicit, separate mode. Treat the Android Screen Sharing notification as the authoritative sign that a full-screen share is active.
- Assistant labels, gesture options, and menu locations vary by Android manufacturer, model, app version, and language.
- Intelligent Screen Context is documented by Google for Gemini in English. If your Gemini language is different, the available wording or behavior may not match an English-language walkthrough exactly.
- These controls affect the Gemini mobile experience on Android. They do not describe Gemini in a desktop browser or another operating system.
These instructions apply to the Gemini mobile app on Android. Google’s help pages describe the feature names and paths, but interfaces can change as Gemini and Android are updated. If a label differs, match the function—Screen context for screen use, Screen Sharing for an active share, default digital assistant for launch behavior, and Gemini on lock screen for pre-unlock access—rather than relying only on a particular menu position.
A practical privacy checklist for different situations
When you are worried about a single app
If Gemini appeared while you were reading a message, viewing a document, or browsing another app, start with Screen context. Turn off both switches, then invoke Gemini once more over the same app. The goal of this test is to see whether Gemini still opens, while confirming that the visible app content is no longer being offered through the two documented screen-context options. If the overlay remains, continue to the default-assistant steps; an overlay and screen-content use are separate behaviors.
When you may have started sharing accidentally
Look for the Android Screen Sharing card before changing any settings. If it is present, stop sharing from the card or from Gemini Live. Ending that session is the immediate action; changing a standing preference cannot substitute for stopping an active full-screen share. Once the card is gone, decide whether you also want to disable future Screen context use.
When the phone is shared with family
Check the lock-screen option as well as the unlocked-screen controls. Turning off Use Gemini without unlocking addresses the pre-unlock route, while the Screen context switches address what Gemini can use when invoked in an app. If a family member can still launch Gemini after unlocking, review the default digital assistant and any manufacturer-specific button or gesture shortcut.
Final verification checklist
Work through this checklist if you want the strongest practical separation between Gemini and your screen:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- In Gemini > Settings > Screen context, both Use text from screen and Use screenshot are off.
- No active Gemini Live session remains, and Android’s Screen Sharing notification is gone or no longer shows an active share.
- Android’s default digital assistant is set to the assistant you intend to use, or None where that option is provided.
- Gemini on lock screen has Use Gemini without unlocking turned off if you do not want pre-unlock access.
- You have tested the specific trigger that caused the concern: opening Gemini over an app, starting Live, using Hey Google, pressing a button, or invoking the assistant while locked.
The controls are intentionally separate. Use Screen context to stop ordinary screen-content use, stop sharing to end a current Gemini Live display share, change the default digital assistant to prevent Gemini from being launched over other apps, and disable Gemini on lock screen to block responses before unlocking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off Screen context stop Gemini from opening over another app?
No. Screen context controls whether Gemini can use visible text or a screenshot. Gemini can still open as the default assistant after Hey Google or a gesture. Change Android’s default digital assistant separately if the overlay itself is unwanted.
Do I need to disable both Screen context switches?
Yes. Turn off both Use text from screen and Use screenshot. They address different forms of screen content, so leaving either enabled can leave part of the feature available.
How do I know whether Gemini Live is still sharing my screen?
Swipe down from the top and look for Android’s Screen Sharing card. If it is active, tap Stop sharing, or return to Gemini Live and tap Turn off screen sharing.
Does changing the default assistant disable Gemini’s screen reading?
No. It changes which assistant responds to standard assistant invocations. Screen-context access remains controlled inside Gemini under Settings > Screen context.
How can I stop Gemini from responding while my phone is locked?
In Gemini, open your profile menu, choose Settings > Gemini on lock screen, and turn off Use Gemini without unlocking. This is separate from the unlocked-phone assistant setting.
Why are the menu names different on my Android phone?
Android manufacturers and software versions can place the default-assistant control in different locations and use labels such as Digital assistant app or Default digital assistant. Search Settings for “assistant” or “default apps” if the listed path differs.
Will a privacy screen protector stop Gemini from seeing my display?
No. A privacy protector limits viewing angles for people nearby. It does not change Gemini’s Screen context switches, end Gemini Live screen sharing, or change the default digital assistant.

Are these instructions the same for Gemini on a computer?
No. The documented paths here apply to the Gemini mobile app on Android. Desktop or browser controls use a different interface.
The Bottom Line
Use the control that matches the behavior: turn off both Screen context switches to block ordinary screen-content use; tap Turn off screen sharing or Stop sharing to end a current Gemini Live share; change Android’s default digital assistant to stop Gemini launching over other apps; and disable Use Gemini without unlocking for lock-screen access.
