If you also want to prevent lock-screen calls or texts, disable Make calls and send messages without unlocking separately on the same page. Notification reading and replies use additional Android permissions, so those need their own checks.

Turn off Gemini’s lock-screen access
The main setting is inside the Gemini mobile app rather than the phone’s ordinary display-lock menu. Google documents it as the switch for whether Gemini can answer general questions before you unlock the device. The exact wording can vary slightly with Android version, device manufacturer, or app version, but look for the Gemini lock-screen settings page.

- Open Gemini on lock screen.

After the switch is off, Gemini should not provide its general lock-screen responses by touch or by the Hey Google wake phrase. To verify the change, lock the device and try the same interaction you were trying to block. If the phone still appears to answer, continue with the separate controls below rather than assuming the first switch failed.

Block calls and messages as a separate permission
Gemini treats calling and messaging as a distinct lock-screen capability. Turning off general responses does not substitute for changing this control, so check it if your goal is to stop every Gemini action before unlocking.
- In Gemini, open your profile picture or initial.
- Go to Settings → Gemini on lock screen.
- Turn off Make calls and send messages without unlocking.
This setting matters if you are concerned that someone could place a call or send a message from a locked phone. It is independent of whether Gemini can answer a harmless general question, so decide which behavior you want and set both switches accordingly.

Stop Gemini from reading or replying to lock-screen notifications
Notification content has more than one gate. Google says notification reading or replies depend on Gemini’s lock-screen settings and Android’s Sensitive notifications setting. Google app notification access is another, separate permission under Android’s special app access or notification-access menus.

Review Android’s Sensitive notifications setting
Open Android Settings and use the Settings search field for Sensitive notifications if you cannot find the option in the lock-screen or notification section. Turn sensitive notification content off if you do not want private message previews or similar details exposed on the locked display. Menu names and placement differ by Android release and manufacturer, so the search result may be the quickest route.
This Android setting controls whether sensitive notification details can appear on the lock screen. It does not replace the Gemini switch: a device can hide notification text while still allowing other Gemini lock-screen behavior, or it can have notification access configured separately.
Check Google app notification access
Google identifies notification access as a separate Android permission. In Settings, search for notification access or special app access, open the matching system page, and review whether the Google app has notification access. If you do not want Gemini-related features to use notification information, remove that access where your Android build provides the option.
Because manufacturers organize these pages differently, do not rely on a single universal menu path. The relevant control may be listed under Special app access, Notification access, or a similarly named privacy section. If Gemini still responds after you turn it off
Work through the controls in order. Each check rules out a different path by which a locked device might appear to respond.
- Reopen Gemini on lock screen. Confirm that Use Gemini without unlocking is visibly off, not merely that the page was opened. If you want calls and texts blocked too, verify the separate calling and messaging switch is off.
- Test the exact trigger. Lock the phone, then test both the on-screen Gemini gesture and the Hey Google phrase if you use both. A result from one path does not prove that every path is enabled.
- Check notification controls. If the symptom is a notification being read or answered rather than a normal Gemini answer, review Sensitive notifications and Google app notification access as described above.
- Check Google Assistant’s lock-screen setting. Some devices or configurations still expose a separate Assistant response control. In the Google Home app, open Popular settings → Lock screen → Assistant responses on lock screen and turn it off if it is enabled.
- Account for device and account limits. Gemini’s lock-screen availability varies by device and account. A supervised account or an age-restricted feature can behave differently from a standard personal account.
The Assistant setting is a troubleshooting check, not a universal explanation for every Gemini behavior. Gemini and Assistant integration differs across devices, so change it only if the observed response is coming through that Assistant path. What turning off the setting does—and does not—guarantee
General questions should require an unlock
The primary switch is designed to prevent general Gemini answers on a locked Android device. It addresses the common case in which someone can ask for information without proving they are the phone’s owner.
Some personal requests already require unlocking
Google says certain requests, including personal-content requests such as calendar details, may require you to unlock the phone even when Gemini’s lock-screen feature is allowed. Therefore, seeing an unlock prompt for one request does not necessarily mean the lock-screen switch is disabled; it may be a built-in requirement for that type of data.

Lock-screen availability is not identical on every Android device
Gemini is available on most Android phone and tablet lock screens, but Google specifically says Pixel Tablet users need to unlock the device to use Gemini. Other phones and tablets can show different labels or place the controls in slightly different locations because Android versions and manufacturer interfaces vary.
Age and supervision restrictions can apply
Some Gemini features have age restrictions or are unavailable for supervised accounts. If a child or supervised profile cannot use the same lock-screen controls, that may reflect account policy rather than a malfunction.

Why one switch may not be enough
Gemini’s general response permission, calling and messaging permission, notification visibility, notification access, and Google Assistant responses are separate layers. They protect different types of information or actions:
- General responses concern answers generated from a locked-screen interaction.
- Calls and messages concern communication actions that can affect other people or create records.
- Sensitive notifications concern what Android displays in notification previews.
- Notification access concerns whether the Google app can read notification information through Android’s permission system.
- Assistant responses concern a separate Google Assistant lock-screen pathway that may still be present on some configurations.
For the strictest lock-screen privacy, review all five layers instead of changing only the first Gemini switch. If your concern is limited to accidental spoken answers, the main Gemini control may be all you need.
A practical verification checklist
Use this checklist after changing the settings, especially if the phone is shared or handles sensitive work messages.
- Gemini app opened and the profile menu used.
- Settings → Gemini on lock screen opened successfully.
- Use Gemini without unlocking confirmed off.
- Make calls and send messages without unlocking confirmed off when communication actions must be blocked.
- Android Sensitive notifications reviewed for the lock screen.
- Google app notification access reviewed under the Android permission page.
- Google Home’s Assistant responses on lock screen checked if a response persists.
- The phone tested while actually locked, using the same touch or voice trigger that caused the concern.
When the behavior is expected
Not every refusal, unlock prompt, or missing option indicates a problem. A request involving personal content can require authentication by design. A Pixel Tablet requires unlocking for Gemini according to Google’s device-specific guidance. A supervised account or age-restricted feature may not expose the same capabilities. Finally, Android manufacturers can rename or relocate settings, so the labels on your phone may not exactly match the wording shown in Google’s help pages.

- Open Gemini.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings → Gemini on lock screen.
- Turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
- Turn off Make calls and send messages without unlocking if calls or messages must also be blocked.
- If notifications remain the concern, review Android’s Sensitive notifications and Google app notification-access permissions.
- If a locked device still answers, check Google Home’s Assistant lock-screen response setting and then test again.
