What the Chrome controls actually stop
Gemini in Chrome has several separate controls, so there is no single “block all access” switch. Google’s desktop help describes the current tab as being shared by default when you open Gemini in Chrome. You can change that default, remove tabs that a chat already received, pause sharing in Gemini Live, and separately disable the permission that lets Gemini browse for you.

Gemini can work with the current tab by default and lets you add other open tabs. Google documents sharing up to 10 open tabs, including tabs across browser windows and tabs opened from a chat or from another shared tab. Therefore, turning off the default affects automatic sharing of the current tab; it does not make every possible, deliberate sharing action unavailable.

Think of these as four different questions: will a new chat receive the page automatically, does this conversation already contain a page, is Live currently sharing pages, and can Gemini perform browsing tasks? Answering all four is the reliable way to narrow access instead of changing only the most visible setting.
Turn off automatic current-tab sharing
Use this procedure when you want new Gemini chats to begin without automatically supplying the page currently displayed in Chrome.
- Open Chrome on your desktop computer.
- Select More, the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open AI innovations.
- Select Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Permissions, switch Share current tab by default off.
The setting changes the starting behavior for new chats. It does not retroactively withdraw a tab that an existing conversation already received. Use the removal procedure below for that situation.

- A new Gemini chat should not automatically include the page in your current tab.
- Chrome may still offer an explicit action to share a tab when you choose to provide context.
- The Gemini interface and its button can remain visible unless you change the separate display preference.
- The setting applies to Gemini in Chrome on the eligible desktop profile where you changed it; it is not a general privacy setting for every browser or account.
After changing the switch, start a fresh chat rather than judging the result from an older conversation. An older chat can retain its own shared-tab state, which is why the setting may appear not to work when it is actually operating as designed.
Remove tabs that an active chat already received
If you opened Gemini before changing the default, the chat may already have one or more shared tabs. Remove those tabs directly from the conversation.
- Open the Gemini conversation in Chrome.
- Above the text box, select Show shared tabs.
- Find the tab you no longer want Gemini to use.
- Select Remove tab beside it.
- Repeat the action for each tab that should be withdrawn.
Google indicates that sharing has stopped when the tab’s glowing underline disappears. Check each tab individually if the chat contains several. Removing one does not automatically remove the others.
Why changing the default was not enough
Share current tab by default controls what happens when a new chat begins. A tab already attached to a conversation is a separate state. Until you remove it, Gemini can continue to use that shared context within the chat, even though future chats no longer share the current tab automatically.

Do not assume that closing the browser window, switching to another page, or hiding the Gemini button revokes the existing share. Use the shared-tab list as the record of what that conversation can use, and remove every sensitive entry shown there.

Stop tab sharing in Gemini Live
Gemini Live has its own on-screen sharing controls. Use them when you are speaking with Gemini Live rather than using the regular text-chat interface.
Pause the current tab
In the Live interface, use the control for the current tab or the pause-sharing control. This pauses sharing of the page you are looking at without requiring you to close the conversation.
Remove selected tabs
- Open Manage tabs in the Live interface.
- Review the tabs currently shared.
- Remove the specific tabs you do not want included.
Remove every shared tab
Select Stop sharing tabs when you want Live to stop receiving all shared tabs at once. This is the broadest Live-session action; it is distinct from changing the default for future text chats.
Google’s Live instructions describe sharing up to 10 recent open tabs. Because the tab list can include tabs from multiple browser windows, review the full list rather than assuming only the visible tab is included.
If you move between regular Gemini and Live, check both interfaces. Stopping sharing in one does not substitute for removing tabs listed in the other, and a setting changed for future chats does not necessarily end an already running Live session.
Disable “Let Gemini browse for you” when you mean automated browsing
Some people use “accessing tabs” to mean that Gemini can navigate websites, follow links, or carry out a sequence of actions. That is not the same as giving Gemini the content of a page so it can answer a question. Disable the browse permission separately if that is your concern.
- In Chrome, open More (three dots) > Settings.
- Select AI innovations.
- Open Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Permissions, switch Let Gemini browse for you off.
Turning this permission off addresses browse-for-you tasks. It does not by itself remove a tab already shared with a normal chat, so use Show shared tabs and Remove tab as well when a conversation already has page context.

Do not confuse tab sharing with hiding the Gemini button
Chrome lists Show Gemini at the top of the browser under its preferences. That preference controls the icon’s visibility. It does not change Share current tab by default, remove tabs from a conversation, or disable browse-for-you actions. If your goal is to stop page sharing, change the permission setting rather than only hiding the icon.
How many tabs can Gemini receive?
Google says Gemini in Chrome can share up to 10 open tabs. The current tab may be supplied by default, while additional tabs are user-selectable. Shared tabs can include tabs opened from a chat or another shared tab, and the documented Live workflow can include recent tabs across browser windows.
This limit is a cap on the number of tabs shared with Gemini, not a promise that all open tabs are visible to it. A tab must be the current default context or be deliberately added. Conversely, closing or switching away from a page is not a reliable substitute for removing a tab that is already listed as shared; remove it from the chat’s tab list.
When reviewing a sensitive session, count the entries rather than checking only the active window. A second browser window can contribute tabs, and a conversation can contain more than the page you first noticed. Remove each unwanted entry individually, or use Live’s all-tabs command when that is the interface you are using.
Workspace pages need extra care
If the shared page is a Google Workspace document or another Workspace page, Google says Gemini may directly access the associated Workspace account when responding about that shared page. The visible browser tab is therefore not necessarily the full boundary of the information used to answer a question.
For sensitive documents, remove the shared tab from the chat and avoid deliberately adding it again. If your organization manages Chrome or Gemini, an administrator may control whether the feature is available or how Workspace access works.
This is especially important for documents that contain information beyond what is currently visible on screen. Treat a shared Workspace page as an authorization decision, not merely as a screenshot or a narrow excerpt, and verify the shared-tab list before asking follow-up questions.
If “Gemini in Chrome” is missing from Settings
Gemini in Chrome is being rolled out gradually. Google says availability depends on an eligible signed-in setup, a supported region and language, and a supported computer. Work or school accounts may also require administrator enablement. The exact menu can therefore differ between accounts, locations, and managed devices.

Check the account and device first
- Confirm that Chrome is signed in to the account you intend to use with Gemini.
- Install available Chrome updates, then restart the browser.
- Use a supported desktop computer and a supported language and region.
- If this is a work or school profile, ask the administrator whether Gemini in Chrome is enabled.
Do not assume that installing a particular Chrome version will unlock the menu. Google’s current desktop instructions do not state a specific version number that guarantees access.
Look for the setting in the correct place
The relevant path is Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. The setting is not the general Chrome privacy page and is not the button-visibility preference. If AI innovations is not shown, open the main Settings menu and verify that you are using the desktop Chrome profile where Gemini is supported.
Managed-browser restrictions
On an organization-managed computer, policies can hide or restrict Gemini features. A missing toggle in that situation may reflect administrator settings rather than a local error. The practical options are to contact the administrator or use an unmanaged, eligible profile if your organization’s rules permit it.
A privacy-focused workflow for each situation
You want no automatic page context in future chats
- Turn off Share current tab by default.
- Start a new chat and check whether the page is listed under Show shared tabs.
- If it is listed, remove it before sending a prompt.
You already used Gemini on a sensitive page
- Open that conversation.
- Use Show shared tabs.
- Remove the sensitive tab and verify that its glowing underline is gone.
- Review other shared tabs in the same chat and remove any that are unnecessary.
- For future chats, leave Share current tab by default off.
You want to prevent automated browsing
- Disable Let Gemini browse for you under the same Permissions section.
- Remove any tabs already attached to active chats.
- In Gemini Live, pause sharing or select Stop sharing tabs if Live is open.
You only want the icon out of sight
Change Show Gemini at the top of the browser. Remember that this changes appearance, not permissions. Use the tab-sharing and browse-for-you controls if you also want to limit access.
A quick verification routine
- Open a new chat after changing the default.
- Open Show shared tabs before typing anything sensitive.
- Confirm that no unwanted tab is listed and that removed tabs no longer have the glowing underline.
- If Live is open, inspect Manage tabs separately.
- Check the Permissions section once more to distinguish the two switches: default sharing and browse-for-you.

What these settings do not guarantee
- Turning off the default does not erase information already supplied in a conversation.
- It does not prevent you from deliberately sharing a tab through an explicit Gemini action.
- It does not disable Gemini everywhere else, such as another browser, device, or service.
- Hiding the Gemini button does not revoke tab permissions.
- Removing a tab from one chat does not automatically remove tabs shared in a different chat or Live session.
These controls are software settings; you do not need a privacy accessory, replacement Chrome part, or extension to perform this task. The built-in permissions and per-chat controls are the relevant mechanisms. An extension should not be presented as a substitute for changing Google’s own settings.
For the narrow goal of stopping automatic access to open tabs, the key sequence is: disable Share current tab by default, remove tabs from any existing chats, and use the Live controls when Live is active. Add the Let Gemini browse for you change only when you also want to prevent automated browsing tasks.
