To preserve an entry, format its cells as Text before typing, or put an apostrophe before a one-off value. If Excel changes text while you paste or load it, Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, and Excel 2021 have a separate Automatic Data Conversion setting.
Choose the fix based on how the value enters Excel
| When Excel changes the value | What to do | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| You type directly into a cell | Format the destination as Text first, or start the entry with an apostrophe. | Identifiers, codes, or literal strings that must keep their original characters. |
| You paste or load text | In supported desktop versions, adjust Automatic Data Conversion under File > Options > Data. | Bulk incoming text, including some CSV-like data. |
| You want a numeric fraction | Enter a zero and a space before the fraction, such as 0 1/2. |
A fraction that should remain numeric rather than be stored as text. |
For example, Excel may turn a typed 12/2 into 2-Dec. The prevention method depends on whether you typed the value or brought it in as text.
Stop date conversion when typing into cells
Format a range or column as Text before entry
- Select the cells where the values will go.
- In Windows desktop Excel, press Ctrl+1, choose Text, then select OK. In Excel for the web, use Home > Number Format > Text.
- Enter or paste the values into those cells.
Microsoft’s instructions cover Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016. Formatting in advance is the supported way to prevent automatic conversion during manual entry. See Microsoft Support’s instructions for stopping automatic number-to-date changes.
Prefix an individual value with an apostrophe
Type an apostrophe before the value, for example '1/47 or '11-53. Excel treats the entry as text and does not show the apostrophe in the cell. Microsoft recommends this approach over a leading space when values will be used in functions such as MATCH or VLOOKUP: the space remains part of the cell content, while the apostrophe does not display after entry.

Keep a fraction numeric
If the entry is a fraction that should still work as a number, enter a zero and a space first: 0 1/2. Microsoft says the zero disappears and Excel stores the result as a Fraction number type. This is a fraction-specific workaround, not a general way to preserve arbitrary codes or identifiers.
Stop conversion when pasting or loading text
For Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, and Excel 2021, open File > Options > Data and find Automatic Data Conversion. You can either clear Enable all default data conversions below when entering, pasting, or loading text into Excel to disable the listed conversions, or leave that master option enabled and clear only Convert continuous letters and numbers to a date.
Rank #2
The narrower setting targets continuous letters and numbers: Microsoft gives JAN1 as an example that can be kept as text when the option is disabled. It does not prevent every date-like string from being interpreted as a date; values such as JAN 1 or JAN-1 may still be treated as dates. The cited settings page documents a Windows-style File > Options path for the three versions named above, not Excel 2019, Excel 2016, Mac, or web. For CSV loading and related controls, consult Microsoft’s Excel data import and analysis options. Microsoft says the automatic-conversion notification shown when loading a CSV or similar file does not appear if all listed conversions are disabled.
Understand what the Text format does—and does not do
Text storage preserves literal characters rather than treating the entry as a date or number. That is useful for identifiers but means the content is text, not a numeric value for calculations. Excel may show a green triangle to flag a number stored as text; Microsoft says you can ignore the indicator or choose Ignore Error.

Applying a display format after Excel has already converted an entry is not the same as restoring the original characters. Number formatting changes how a value appears, not necessarily the underlying value. If a conversion has already happened, inspect what is actually stored and compare it with the original source data before deciding how to repair it; the documented prevention guidance does not provide a universal recovery procedure. Microsoft’s number-format guidance covers Windows, Mac, and web, and notes that entries containing slashes or hyphens can receive Date formatting automatically.
