Which setting should you change?
Chrome uses your Google Account to make selected browsing information available on devices where you are signed in. Depending on the platform and the options shown in your version of Chrome, that information can include browsing history, ordinary open tabs and tab groups. The right fix depends on what you are seeing.

If the complaint is that a tab opened on a phone appears on an iPad, first identify whether it is merely listed under tabs from another device, whether a tab group is being synchronized, or whether a tab group is opening automatically. Chrome exposes different controls for those behaviors, and turning off one does not necessarily remove every other form of cross-device visibility.

Tabs listed from another device
Chrome can show tabs opened on another signed-in device in an other-device history view. On a computer, that view is More > History > Tabs from other devices. Seeing a page there means Chrome is receiving tab information for the account; it does not necessarily mean the page has opened in a new window or tab on the current device.

Tab groups synchronized between devices
A tab group is a saved collection of tabs. Google’s Android and iPhone or iPad help pages describe tab groups as information that can be synchronized across devices using the same Google Account. A group may therefore be available on another device even when it is not automatically placed in front of you.
Tab groups opening automatically
Automatic opening is a separate experience: a group received from another device appears without you deliberately selecting it. Android and iPhone or iPad both document an Automatically open tab groups from other devices control. That control addresses automatic opening, while Android also has the separate Open Tabs choice under Sync.
This distinction explains why one switch may not appear to solve every symptom. If you only want to stop a group opening on screen, change the automatic-opening setting. If you want to stop account-based open-tab sharing, use the tab or history sync choice where your platform provides one.
Stop tab syncing on a computer
Use the selective History and tabs setting
- Open Chrome on the computer.
- Select More, the three-dot menu, and choose Settings.
- Open You and Google.
- Select the Google Account name shown there.
- Choose the option to decide what to save in your Google Account.
- Turn off the History and tabs choice, if it is shown.
This is the useful choice when you want to stop Chrome tabs showing on another device but still want other selected Chrome data, such as bookmarks or passwords, to remain available through the account. The exact wording and placement can change as Chrome’s settings interface changes, so look for the account-level list of information being saved rather than assuming every release uses identical labels.
Chrome’s computer help describes syncing tabs and browsing history after you sign in. The control is therefore tied to the Google Account and Chrome profile shown on that settings page. If you use more than one Chrome profile, repeat the check in the profile that actually opened the tabs.
Check whether tabs are still visible elsewhere
On a computer, Chrome can show tabs from other signed-in devices under More > History > Tabs from other devices. That view is useful for diagnosing the symptom: it tells you that Chrome is still receiving tab information for the account, but it does not itself provide the selective switch. Change the account’s History and tabs choice instead.
Use the view as a before-and-after check, not as a deletion tool. Opening a new test tab after changing the account choice gives you a cleaner test than deleting an existing group, because deleting a group can affect every device using that account.

When disabling all sync is the only available choice
Some Chrome versions or account configurations may not present the same selective controls. If you cannot find a separate History and tabs choice, Chrome may offer a broader sync switch instead. Disabling sync more broadly can stop account-based sharing, but it also affects other categories you may rely on. Before using that option, check whether the account page lets you choose individual categories. The selective setting is preferable when your goal is only to stop tab sharing.
A broad sync change can affect bookmarks, passwords and other selected Chrome information. It is a choice for account separation, not merely a tab setting, so record which categories you want to retain before switching it off.
Stop Chrome tabs syncing on Android
Turn off Open Tabs
- Open Chrome on the Android phone or tablet.
- Tap More, then tap Settings.
- Open Sync.
- Clear the checkbox or switch for Open Tabs.
Google’s Android instructions identify Open Tabs as the setting to change when you want tab groups to stop automatically syncing across devices. This is the Android control most directly associated with the complaint that tabs opened on one device appear on another.
Make the change in the Chrome app, not only in the phone’s general Google-account settings. The route is inside the Chrome profile that is signed in and sharing the tabs. If more than one Android device is involved, inspect each one and confirm the same account name before testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAlso disable automatic tab-group opening when necessary
If the problem is specifically that a tab group opens by itself on the Android device, change the separate control as well:
- In Chrome, open More > Settings.
- Open Tabs and tab groups.
- Turn off Automatically open tab groups from other devices.
Do not treat this setting as a duplicate label for Open Tabs. Android documents them separately. The first controls the account’s open-tab synchronization choice; the second controls automatic opening of tab groups received from another device. Your symptom may require one or both changes.
Preserve other Chrome data
Turning off Open Tabs is narrower than disabling Chrome sync entirely. If you want bookmarks, passwords or other selected information to continue following your Google Account, leave those categories enabled and change only the tab-related choice available in Sync. The categories shown can vary by Chrome version and account state.

Stop tab groups opening on an iPhone or iPad
Use the iOS tab-group setting
- Open Chrome on the iPhone or iPad.
- Open Chrome’s Settings.
- Tap Tabs and tab groups.
- Turn off Automatically open tab groups from other devices.
Google says tab groups can be saved and synchronized across devices signed in to the same Google Account. The documented iPhone and iPad control is specifically for stopping tab groups from automatically opening from other devices.

Understand the iOS limitation
The iOS help instructions do not describe an iPhone or iPad checkbox equivalent to Android’s Open Tabs setting. Therefore, do not promise that turning off Automatically open tab groups from other devices will disable every form of shared open-tab data or remove tabs from every other-device list. It directly addresses automatic tab-group opening; other account synchronization behavior may have to be changed on the source device or another platform that exposes the relevant sync category.
If a phone-to-iPad complaint continues, check the Android or computer that created the tabs. The iPad control can stop automatic group opening there, but it is not documented as a general switch for all open-tab records.
Choose the least disruptive fix
| Your goal | Change to make | What remains possible |
|---|---|---|
| Keep bookmarks and passwords syncing, but stop account-based tab sharing on a computer | Disable History and tabs in the account’s “choose what to save” controls. | Other categories that remain selected can continue syncing. |
| Stop Android open-tab synchronization | Clear Open Tabs in Settings > Sync. | Other selected sync categories can remain enabled. |
| Stop an Android tab group opening automatically | Disable Automatically open tab groups from other devices in Settings > Tabs and tab groups. | The control targets automatic opening, not necessarily every tab record stored or listed elsewhere. |
| Stop tab groups automatically opening on iPhone or iPad | Disable Automatically open tab groups from other devices in Settings > Tabs and tab groups. | The documented iOS control does not establish that all open-tab synchronization is disabled. |
| Stop all Chrome account synchronization and accept broader effects | Use the general sync-off option if your version provides no selective tab control. | Other Chrome data categories may stop syncing too. |
The practical trade-off is scope. A selective tab or history choice is best when you still want account-backed bookmarks or passwords. A general sync-off choice is broader and may be appropriate only when you want the Chrome profile to stop sharing selected information altogether.
Why tabs can still appear after you change a setting
You changed the wrong platform’s setting
Chrome settings are device- and platform-specific. A switch changed on Android does not automatically mean the iPhone or iPad is configured the same way, and the labels are not identical. Apply the documented route on each device involved in the symptom. For a two-device complaint, community guidance dated August 13–14, 2025 recommended checking Open Tabs on both devices or disabling sync entirely, but Google’s platform-specific help remains the authoritative procedure.
The issue is automatic opening, not ordinary tab visibility
A tab group can be visible as synchronized account information without automatically opening on screen. If your problem is an unwanted group appearing immediately, use the Automatically open tab groups from other devices control on Android or iOS. If the problem is a tab appearing in an other-device list, use the account’s tab/history sync control where that platform provides one.
The setting is not shown
Chrome’s interface can change between versions, and the available choices can differ by platform. Confirm that you are signed in to the Google Account that is sharing the tabs, then inspect You and Google on a computer or Sync on Android. On iPhone and iPad, inspect Tabs and tab groups. Do not substitute a similarly named privacy or history option unless it explicitly refers to the account information being saved or to tabs from other devices.

More than one account or profile is involved
Sync follows the Google Account used by that Chrome profile. If a computer has multiple Chrome profiles or if a mobile device is signed in to more than one Google service account, verify the account name shown in Chrome’s settings before changing anything. A setting changed in one profile will not necessarily change a different profile that is signed in separately.
You are testing an old group instead of a new tab
Changing a setting is intended to prevent future sharing or automatic opening; it is not a command to erase every tab that was already received. Test with a newly opened tab or group after the change. If an existing group is still visible, avoid deleting it merely to test the setting, because deletion has cross-device consequences.
Do not delete tab groups as a sync fix
Deleting a tab group is not a general way to prevent future sharing. Google warns that deleting a tab group removes it on the current device and on other devices using the same Google Account. If your goal is privacy or separation between devices, change the relevant sync or automatic-opening setting instead. Delete a group only when you actually want it removed from the account-connected devices.
A practical verification checklist
- Identify whether the symptom is an other-device tab listing, a synchronized tab group, or automatic opening of a tab group.
- Confirm which Google Account and Chrome profile are active on every affected device.
- On a computer, inspect More > Settings > You and Google > account name and disable History and tabs when available.
- On Android, inspect More > Settings > Sync and clear Open Tabs.
- On Android or iOS, inspect Settings > Tabs and tab groups and disable automatic opening if that is the behavior you want to stop.
- Repeat the check on the other device involved; platform controls are not guaranteed to mirror one another.
- Open a new test tab after changing the setting rather than using deletion of an existing tab group as the test.
- If the only available control is a general sync switch, decide whether losing synchronization for bookmarks, passwords and other categories is acceptable before turning it off.
What the change does not do
Stopping tab synchronization does not erase local tabs from every device, sign you out of Chrome, or remove bookmarks and passwords unless you choose a broader sync change that affects those categories. It also does not make the iOS and Android controls identical. The documented iOS switch targets automatic tab-group opening, while Android exposes an explicit Open Tabs sync selection.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop tabs syncing but keep bookmarks and passwords?
Usually, yes. On a computer, turn off History and tabs in the account’s “choose what to save” controls. On Android, clear only Open Tabs under Settings > Sync. Leave bookmarks, passwords and other desired categories selected. If your version offers only a general sync switch, read its effects before disabling it.
Is the iPhone setting the same as Android’s Open Tabs switch?
No. Google documents the iPhone and iPad option as Automatically open tab groups from other devices under Settings > Tabs and tab groups. The iOS instructions do not describe it as a general Open Tabs sync checkbox, so it should not be presented as a complete equivalent.

Check every device involved, especially when one device creates tabs and another displays them. A community Product Expert response in August 2025 suggested switching off Open Tabs on both devices or disabling sync entirely. Use Google’s platform-specific paths first, because the available controls differ between desktop, Android and iOS.
Best Value
Will turning off sync remove tabs that are already open?
Do not assume it will erase existing local tabs or groups. The documented controls prevent or limit future synchronization or automatic opening. If you delete a tab group instead, Google warns that the deletion can propagate to other devices using the same account.
Why do I still see a tab under “Tabs from other devices”?
That list is a diagnostic view of tab information Chrome has received for the account. It is not the switch itself. Recheck the active account and profile, then change History and tabs on a computer or Open Tabs on Android where available. iOS documents automatic group opening separately and does not promise removal from every other-device list.
What if I only want to stop a group from opening automatically?
Use Settings > Tabs and tab groups > Automatically open tab groups from other devices on Android or iPhone/iPad. This targets automatic opening. It does not necessarily disable all account-based tab visibility or synchronization.

Bottom line for a phone-to-iPad complaint
If tabs opened on an Android phone are appearing on an iPad, start by clearing Open Tabs in Chrome’s Android Settings > Sync. On the iPad, turn off Automatically open tab groups from other devices under Settings > Tabs and tab groups if groups are opening automatically. If a computer is also involved, disable History and tabs in its account-level sync choices. Check each device’s active Google Account, because the setting is applied per platform and per Chrome profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stop tabs syncing but keep bookmarks and passwords?
Usually. Disable History and tabs on a computer or clear Open Tabs on Android, while leaving other selected categories enabled. A general sync-off option can affect bookmarks, passwords and other data.
Is the iPhone setting the same as Android’s Open Tabs switch?
No. iPhone and iPad document Automatically open tab groups from other devices, which targets automatic opening. It is not documented as a general equivalent to Android’s Open Tabs checkbox.
Will turning off sync delete tabs already open?
Do not assume so. The controls limit future synchronization or automatic opening. Deleting a tab group is different and can remove it from other devices using the same Google Account.
Why do tabs still appear in Tabs from other devices?
That is a diagnostic list, not the setting itself. Verify the active account and profile, then change the computer’s History and tabs choice or Android’s Open Tabs setting where available.
Should I change the setting on both devices?
Check each device involved, because platform controls are separate and are not guaranteed to mirror one another. Apply the documented route for each platform.
The Bottom Line
Use the narrowest control that matches the symptom: computer History and tabs, Android Open Tabs, or Android/iPhone/iPad automatic tab-group opening. Verify the Google Account and Chrome profile on every affected device, and do not delete shared groups merely to stop syncing.
