ChatGPT does not automatically read ordinary Chrome tabs. Your open tabs become relevant when you use the Codex Chrome extension, which is the OpenAI-documented route for working with an existing Chrome profile, signed-in session, open tabs, or Chrome extensions. To keep ChatGPT away from those tabs, do not approve that Chrome connection, disable or remove the Codex Chrome extension, and use ChatGPT’s desktop built-in browser or cloud browser instead.
The built-in and cloud browsers run with separate browser state. They are not the same as your everyday Chrome window, so they do not inherit its open tabs, cookies, saved passwords, history, extensions, or existing sign-ins.

Which ChatGPT browser mode can use your Chrome tabs?
The answer depends on the browser path used for the task. ChatGPT can operate in more than one browser environment, and the privacy boundary is different for each one.

OpenAI’s Help Center describes the Chrome extension as the option to use when a task needs your existing Chrome profile, signed-in session, open tabs or Chrome extensions. Its cloud-browser documentation says the cloud browser does not use those personal browser items. The desktop built-in browser is likewise a separate browser state.

How to tell whether a task is trying to use Chrome
Look at the wording of the request or approval dialog before continuing. A task that asks to use an “existing Chrome profile,” “open tabs,” a “signed-in session,” or Chrome extensions is pointing to the Chrome-extension path. A task that opens a browser inside the ChatGPT desktop app is using the built-in browser instead.
Do not infer that every browser task can see Chrome. The ordinary cloud browser and the desktop built-in browser are isolated from your personal Chrome window. The key warning sign is an explicit request to connect Chrome or to use an existing profile.
Stop the connection before ChatGPT reaches Chrome
- Pause at the approval prompt. If ChatGPT asks to connect to Chrome, use an existing profile, or share open tabs, choose the option that declines, cancels or stops the request. Do not continue simply because the task itself is trusted; the approval controls the browser path.
- Close the task if necessary. If there is no clear decline button, stop the task and return to ChatGPT’s browser or connection settings. Starting again in an isolated browser is safer than accepting an unclear permission request.
- Confirm which browser opened. A browser panel inside the desktop app is not automatically your Chrome window. Check whether the interface identifies itself as the built-in browser or cloud browser before entering account details.
Approval and revocation are different controls. Declining a new request prevents that connection from being approved at that moment. It does not necessarily remove an extension or disconnect an account that was approved earlier.

Disable or remove the Codex Chrome extension
If you do not want ChatGPT to use your Chrome profile or tabs, disable the Codex Chrome extension in Chrome. Removing it is the stronger choice when you do not expect to use the connection again; disabling it is useful when you may want to re-enable it later.
- Open Chrome’s extensions management page from the browser menu.
- Find the Codex or ChatGPT-related extension that you previously installed.
- Turn its extension switch off, or choose the remove option if you want it deleted from Chrome.
- Close any ChatGPT task that was waiting for the extension, then reopen the task in the desktop built-in browser or cloud browser.
Chrome’s exact labels and menu placement can vary by operating system, Chrome release and organizational policy. If the extension was installed or controlled by an employer or school, you may not be able to remove it yourself. In that case, ask the administrator to disable the extension or its policy-controlled connection.

Disabling the extension prevents it from operating in Chrome while disabled. It does not by itself disconnect a separate account integration in ChatGPT, so check connected apps as well if you previously authorized one.
Use ChatGPT’s desktop built-in browser instead
The desktop app’s built-in browser maintains its own browser state rather than reusing your everyday Chrome profile. It is the appropriate alternative when you want an interactive browser inside ChatGPT without exposing your personal Chrome tabs.
- Open the task in the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Choose the desktop app’s built-in browser when the task offers a browser choice. Do not select an option that asks to connect an existing Chrome profile.
- Sign in only to the services required for that task. A sign-in made in the built-in browser belongs to that browser state and is not automatically a sign-in in your normal Chrome window.
- When finished, close the built-in browser session or sign out of services that contain sensitive information.
The built-in browser is a separate environment, but it can still have its own permissions and connected services. Treat it as an independent browser profile: review prompts, avoid unnecessary sign-ins and do not assume that isolation removes the need for normal account security.
Use the cloud browser when you need the strongest separation from the device
The cloud browser runs separately from the browser on your computer. OpenAI states that it does not use your personal browser’s open tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions or existing sign-ins.
Choose the cloud browser when the task does not need anything stored in Chrome and you want to avoid using the device’s browser state. You may need to sign in again inside that environment, because personal Chrome cookies and saved credentials are not carried over. That extra sign-in is a consequence of the separation, not a failure.

- Use cloud browsing for web research or a web workflow that can start from a clean session.
- Do not expect it to open a tab that is already on your computer.
- Do not expect personal Chrome extensions or saved passwords to be available.
- Before entering sensitive credentials, verify that the task is running in the intended ChatGPT browser surface.
Turn off site tools in the desktop app
Site tools are a separate capability in the ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser. If you do not want the built-in browser to use them, OpenAI documents this path:

- Open Browser settings.
- Choose Permissions.
- Turn off Enable site tools.
This setting concerns site tools in the built-in browser; it is not a substitute for disabling a Chrome extension. If a task is trying to connect to your existing Chrome profile, use Chrome’s extension controls and ChatGPT’s connection settings as well.
Disconnect an account or app connection
A connected account can provide a separate route to data even after you stop using a browser extension. To remove that route, open ChatGPT’s account connections area. Depending on the interface, it may be labeled Settings > Plugins or Settings > Apps.
- Open ChatGPT settings.
- Go to Plugins or Apps, depending on the labels shown for your account.
- Select the relevant app or connection.
- Open its account or connection menu.
- Choose Disconnect and confirm if prompted.
Disconnecting stops future access through that particular account connection. It does not necessarily remove another account, a second connection, an extension installed in Chrome or a workspace-managed integration. Review the entire list rather than assuming one disconnection covers every path.
What happens to existing tabs after you disconnect?
Disconnecting or disabling access stops future use of that connection; it does not close your Chrome tabs or erase the information already visible in them. If a task was already running, stop it and start a new task in the isolated browser. For especially sensitive work, close the relevant Chrome tabs, sign out of the sites and clear any temporary session data according to your organization’s policy.

Do not treat a browser-tab change as proof that a permission was revoked. A tab can remain open after an extension is disabled, and an account connection can remain listed after a browser window is closed. Check the extension state and connected-account list directly.

The documentation establishes that the Codex Chrome extension is the path intended for tasks that need an existing Chrome profile, signed-in session, open tabs or Chrome extensions. It does not establish a single universal rule that every installation can read every tab at all times.
Actual access can depend on the extension’s Chrome permissions, the task you approve, the account or workspace configuration and the version of the product. A prompt to connect Chrome should therefore be treated as permission to make your existing browser context available to the task. If you do not want that possibility, do not approve the prompt and disable or remove the extension.
The cloud browser and desktop built-in browser do not use your personal Chrome tabs. They cannot open a tab merely because it is open in another Chrome window on your computer.

Browser features and connection controls can vary by plan, region, account, model, product surface and workspace settings. An option described in help documentation may be missing from your interface because it has not rolled out to your account or because an administrator has restricted it.
- If you cannot find the Chrome extension, check whether your organization manages Chrome extensions.
- If the Disconnect control is missing, look for a workspace administrator or account owner who manages the connection.
- If the built-in browser or site-tools setting is absent, verify that you are using the desktop app rather than the web interface and that the feature is available for your plan and region.
- If labels differ, follow the function rather than the exact wording: browser permissions, connected apps, extension management and disconnect controls may be renamed during a rollout.
Do not install an unofficial extension to recreate a missing control. Use the browser and account settings supplied by your organization or by ChatGPT.
A privacy checklist before you start a task
- Identify the browser surface: Chrome extension, desktop built-in browser or cloud browser.
- Reject any request for an existing Chrome profile when the task does not need your tabs or sign-ins.
- Disable or remove the Codex Chrome extension if you want a persistent barrier.
- Check connected apps and disconnect accounts you no longer want ChatGPT to use.
- Turn off Enable site tools under desktop app Browser settings > Permissions if site tools are unnecessary.
- Use a separate browser state and sign in only to the services required for the job.
- Afterward, verify the extension state and connection list rather than relying on a closed browser window.
Troubleshooting common situations
The task keeps asking for Chrome
Cancel the request instead of approving it. Disable or remove the Chrome extension, then reopen the task in the desktop built-in browser or cloud browser. If the request returns, a workspace policy or a task requirement may be forcing the Chrome path; check with the administrator or choose a workflow that does not require personal tabs.
I disabled the extension but ChatGPT still has an account connection
Extension status and account connections are separate. Open ChatGPT’s Plugins or Apps settings and disconnect the relevant account. Check for additional accounts or workspace-managed connections.
I cannot find “Enable site tools”
That control is documented for the ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser. Confirm that you are in the desktop app, open Browser settings and then Permissions. Availability and labels can vary by account, plan, region and rollout.
The cloud browser cannot use my saved login
That is expected. The cloud browser does not use personal Chrome cookies, saved passwords, extensions or existing sign-ins. Sign in inside the cloud browser only when the task requires it, and sign out when finished.
An administrator installed the extension
Chrome may prevent you from removing or disabling a policy-managed extension. Contact the workspace administrator and request that the extension or its access policy be changed. Until then, avoid approving tasks that request your existing profile or open tabs.
The practical rule
ChatGPT’s ordinary cloud and desktop built-in browsers are separate from your personal Chrome state. The Codex Chrome extension is the documented bridge to an existing Chrome profile and its open tabs. To keep that bridge closed, decline Chrome connection prompts, disable or remove the extension, disconnect any related account, and run the task in the built-in or cloud browser instead. Because availability and labels vary across accounts and workspaces, verify the actual extension and connection settings shown on your device before handling sensitive tabs.
