The durable, pesticide-free solution is exclusion: reduce lights that attract beetles, repair screens, close and seal every gap, and fit exterior doors with tight sweeps or thresholds. Vacuum beetles already indoors and empty the vacuum outside. If the insects are carpet beetles, add a thorough cleaning and fabric-inspection routine because their larvae—not wandering adult beetles—can damage household materials.
The right follow-up depends on the beetle. Ground and click beetles usually wander in from outdoors, lady beetles seek sheltered overwintering sites, and carpet beetle larvae feed on lint, hair and animal-based fabrics. The plan below handles all four situations without sprays.

Why beetles get inside
Most indoor beetles are not establishing a breeding population in the building. They enter through small openings while searching for shelter, warmth or food, or because exterior and interior lights draw them toward windows and doors. Click beetles are particularly attracted to bright lights at night. Lady beetles commonly use cracks and wall voids as sheltered places to overwinter. Ground beetles generally wander indoors from nearby soil, mulch or vegetation.

Their larvae can live unnoticed in closets, under furniture or along carpet edges, feeding on lint, pet hair, dead insects, wool, fur, feathers and other keratin-containing materials. An occasional adult near a window is not proof of an infestation, but repeated larvae, shed skins or irregular fabric holes justify a sanitation and storage inspection.

There is no reliable universal timetable for stopping sightings. Sealing a major entry gap can reduce arrivals immediately, while hidden cracks, seasonal emergence and an indoor food source can prolong the problem. Avoid promises of a fixed percentage reduction or a guaranteed number of days.
A pesticide-free plan for tonight
- Document the beetle. Take a clear photograph beside a ruler or coin. Note its color, approximate length, location, season and whether you see fabric damage, larvae or shed skins. If identification is uncertain, send the photograph to your county or state university extension office or diagnostic laboratory. Exclusion and vacuuming are safe first actions while you wait.
- Change exterior lighting. Turn off decorative and unnecessary lights after dark. Where lighting is required, use a lower-intensity bulb, a motion-activated fixture or a shield that directs light down instead of outward. Close curtains or blinds when interior light would shine through an open window.
- Check every screen. Examine window screens, screen doors, exhaust openings and attic vents. Look for holes, loose spline, lifted edges and gaps around frames. Patch small damage with compatible mesh and replace badly damaged panels. Install screening behind attic vents where appropriate, while preserving the ventilation the building requires.
- Seal structural openings. Inspect window and door trim, the foundation line, siding joints, soffits, fascia and the places where pipes, cables and wires pass through walls. Caulk narrow cracks with an exterior-grade product suitable for that surface. Fill larger holes with a durable solid or mesh material before sealing the perimeter.
- Close the door bottom. Fit a tight-fitting sweep or threshold seal to each exterior door. With the door closed, there should be no visible daylight along the bottom or corners. Correct a sagging door or damaged weather-stripping so the sweep makes continuous contact without preventing the door from latching.
- Remove indoor beetles mechanically. Vacuum windowsills, walls, floors and corners. A cloth or handkerchief placed over the end of a vacuum hose can catch lady beetles for outdoor release. Empty a canister outdoors, or remove and seal the collection bag before taking it outside.
- Clean if carpet beetles are possible. Remove lint, hair, dead insects and old webs. Vacuum rug edges, upholstery seams, closet floors, baseboards and areas under furniture. Inspect woolens, linens, furs, feathers and stored natural-fiber items; launder or dry-clean them as appropriate and keep clean susceptible goods in airtight containers.
Seal the entire entry-point chain
Beetles can use several openings in sequence. A sealed window is not enough if an unsealed utility penetration leads into the same wall cavity, and a screened attic vent does not compensate for a gap under the back door. Work around the house in one direction and record each defect so none is skipped.
Doors and thresholds
Inspect every exterior door, including garage-to-house and basement doors. Replace compressed weather-stripping, install a door sweep for an exterior door, and repair threshold sections that have warped or pulled away. Pay special attention to the hinge side and the upper corners, where a misaligned slab can leave a narrow continuous gap.

Check the junction between the frame and wall, not only the movable sash. Re-caulk failed exterior joints, repair torn mesh and make sure screens sit fully in their tracks. Keep windows closed at night when a damaged screen cannot be repaired immediately.
Foundation, siding and masonry
Walk the foundation perimeter in daylight. Seal cracks around sill plates, siding transitions, vents and service penetrations with a sealant compatible with masonry, wood, vinyl or metal. Larger voids may need backer material or a fitted piece of mesh before caulking. Do not seal expansion joints, drainage openings or intentional weep holes that the structure needs.

Soffits, fascia and attic vents
Look upward for lifted soffit panels, gaps behind fascia and missing vent screens. Repair loose panels and add correctly sized screening where insects can pass through. Never block a required attic or roof vent; restricted airflow can create moisture and mold problems that are more serious than occasional beetles.
Pipes, cables and wires
Utility lines often leave annular gaps large enough for small insects. Seal the space around the penetration without touching hot flues, moving equipment or electrical conductors in a way that violates local safety requirements. If a penetration is high, concealed or difficult to reach safely, have a qualified building or exclusion contractor handle it.
Use light management to remove the attractant
Outdoor illumination can pull night-flying beetles toward the very openings you are trying to protect. The Ask Extension click-beetle guidance dated July 21, 2025 recommends reducing outdoor lighting, leaving unnecessary lights off, and choosing lower-intensity or motion-activated fixtures. Shielding a fixture so it throws light downward rather than toward windows also reduces the visible target.
Move unavoidable lights farther from doors and windows when the property layout permits. Keep porch lights off when nobody is using the entrance, and close curtains before turning on bright indoor lights after dark. These changes reduce attraction; they do not replace physical sealing.
Remove beetles without sprays
Vacuuming is the preferred response for individual lady beetles and a practical way to collect click beetles and ground beetles. Use a crevice tool along sill edges and baseboards, then empty the machine outside. Leaving a full vacuum bag indoors can allow live insects to escape.

If you prefer to release live lady beetles, stretch a thin cloth or handkerchief over the hose opening and secure it with a band. Vacuum gently, carry the cloth outdoors, and release the insects away from doors and windows. Do not crush large numbers on painted surfaces; their defensive fluids can stain.

Hand removal works for a single slow-moving beetle. A container and stiff paper can capture it for outdoor release. Avoid sweeping insects into wall voids or under appliances, where they may remain hidden.
Identify the beetle before choosing follow-up work
| Likely group | Clues | What it usually means | Non-chemical response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click beetles | Elongate, hard-bodied adults; often found near lights at night | Outdoor wanderers attracted to illumination | Reduce lighting, repair screens and seals, then vacuum individuals |
| Ground beetles | Dark, often shiny adults on floors, windowsills or near doors | Outdoor insects entering through gaps; generally not an indoor infestation | Seal door bottoms and foundation gaps; vacuum arrivals |
| Lady beetles | Rounded adults, often clustered around sunny windows or wall voids in cool seasons | Adults seeking sheltered overwintering sites | Seal cracks and openings, reduce entry light and vacuum or release indoors adults |
| Carpet beetles | Tiny patterned adults, or hairy larvae and shed skins in dark, undisturbed areas | Larvae may be feeding on lint, hair, dead insects or animal-based fabrics | Intensive vacuuming, source removal, fabric inspection and airtight storage |
Color alone is unreliable: several unrelated beetles are black or brown, and lighting changes how patterns appear. Photograph the insect from above and from the side, include its location, and ask a local extension diagnostic service when the identification affects what you clean or store.
Carpet-beetle sanitation and storage
When larvae or damage indicate carpet beetles, concentrate on removing food and hiding places rather than spraying. Vacuum slowly enough to lift lint from carpet edges and under heavy furniture. Empty closet corners, clean upholstery seams and remove old spider webs and dead insects from light fixtures, window wells and wall voids that are accessible.
Inspect wool sweaters, blankets, rugs, silk, leather, fur, taxidermy, feathers and stored linens. Look for irregular holes, thinning, larvae, shed skins and gritty droppings. Clean items according to their care labels before storage. Place clean susceptible textiles in airtight boxes or bags; a container is useful only when it closes completely and the contents are clean.

Continue checking quiet areas after cleaning. A surviving larva can move away from its original food source, so inspect adjacent closets, vents and furniture rather than treating only the spot where a hole was found.
Materials for a do-it-yourself exclusion job
| Task | Useful material | Selection or safety note |
|---|---|---|
| Seal narrow exterior cracks | Exterior-grade caulk or sealant | Choose a product rated for the substrate and outdoor temperature range |
| Close a door bottom | Tight-fitting door sweep or threshold seal | Measure the door width and preserve a weather-tight but freely latching closure |
| Repair screens | Matching screen-repair mesh, spline and roller | Match the existing mesh type and replace loose frame seals |
| Collect insects | Handheld vacuum, cloth or handkerchief, container and stiff paper | Empty or release contents outdoors |
| Store susceptible fabrics | Clean, airtight containers | Do not seal dirty textiles, lint or larvae inside |
Use gloves and eye protection when cutting mesh or working with sealant. A ladder, roof edge or electrical service area is not an appropriate place to improvise; hire someone qualified for work that cannot be reached safely from the ground.

Beetles still appear after caulking
Recheck the door sweep, garage-to-house door and utility penetrations. Examine attic vents and soffits from outside, and look for a screen that is intact in the center but loose at its edge. If sightings occur only at night, review lighting before adding more sealant.
Beetles cluster at windows
Check for a torn or poorly seated screen, failed sash weather-stripping and gaps at the exterior trim. Close curtains when indoor lights are on after dark. Clustering in a cool season can indicate lady beetles sheltering in a wall or attic; sealing exterior access points is more durable than trying to remove every hidden adult.
There are many tiny beetles or larvae in a closet
Treat this as a possible carpet-beetle food-source problem. Vacuum the whole closet and adjoining rooms, inspect natural-fiber goods and remove lint, hair, dead insects and old webs. Store cleaned items airtight and seek an extension identification if larvae or damage continue.

The gap is too large or inaccessible to seal
Do not stuff ventilation openings, disturb wiring or climb onto an unsafe roof. A pest-exclusion or building contractor can identify the correct repair, install screening and seal hidden openings. University guidance notes that comprehensive sealing can be time-consuming or impractical for householders.
When to obtain professional help
DIY work is reasonable for reachable cracks, ordinary screen repairs and door sweeps. Get help when openings are numerous, high, concealed, associated with water damage or located near electrical, heating or roof systems. A qualified professional should also assess persistent carpet-beetle damage when careful cleaning and storage do not stop new larvae.
Ask the provider to describe the exclusion or building repairs in writing and to preserve required ventilation. If identification is uncertain, obtain an extension diagnosis before authorizing any treatment. Pesticides are not necessary for the basic exclusion and sanitation steps described here.

Keep the house beetle-resistant
- At the start of each season, walk the foundation and inspect door bottoms, window trim, screens, soffits and utility penetrations.
- Replace failed caulk and weather-stripping before the period when beetles are most active or seeking shelter.
- Keep exterior lights off when not needed; use motion activation and downward shielding for essential fixtures.
- Vacuum window tracks, baseboards, closet edges and under furniture regularly, especially where lint and pet hair collect.
- Store clean woolens, furs, feathers and other susceptible materials in airtight containers.
- Keep a photograph and identification record for recurring beetles so seasonal visitors are not confused with a developing carpet-beetle problem.
The University of Kentucky Entomology states that “Sealing cracks and openings is the most permanent way of preventing lady beetles from entering buildings.” That principle applies broadly: reduce the attraction, block the route, and remove the few insects that get past the barrier.
