There is no universal “stop AI training” switch. Turn off model-improvement or training sharing separately in every service, use a temporary or private chat for sensitive prompts, and avoid optional feedback when the service says it can be reused for training. If your goal is deletion, delete old conversations separately: an opt-out usually governs future use and does not undo training that has already happened.
What to do first
Work through each AI service and social platform you use. A setting in one company’s account does not control another company’s data. The safest practical sequence is:

- Open the service’s privacy, data-controls or data-sharing settings.
- Disable any switch named “Improve the model,” “model training,” “training and fine-tuning,” or similar.
- Use Temporary Chat, Private Chat or the equivalent for prompts you would not want retained in ordinary history.
- Do not submit thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written feedback if the service says feedback may be used to improve or train models.
- Delete old conversations separately if deletion is your objective.
- Where a legal objection form exists, submit it promptly and keep the confirmation.
These steps reduce future use. They cannot reliably remove information that has already been incorporated into a trained model, and private modes can still have short safety-retention periods or regional restrictions.
ChatGPT and other OpenAI consumer accounts
Turn off model improvement
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Find Improve the model for everyone.
- Switch it off.
OpenAI states: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” This is a forward-looking control. Existing conversations remain in your chat history unless you delete them, and turning the switch off does not itself erase those chats.

Use Temporary Chat for sensitive prompts
Temporary Chat does not appear in history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve models. OpenAI says Temporary Chats may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety. That retention period is a security measure, not a return to ordinary model-training use, but it means Temporary Chat is not the same as instant destruction.
Submit a formal “do not train” request
OpenAI also provides a Privacy Portal request labelled do not train on my content. Use it if you want to record an explicit privacy request in addition to changing the in-product control. Keep in mind that an opt-out and a deletion request solve different problems: the former limits future model-improvement use, while the latter targets stored account data.
Business, enterprise, education, healthcare and API products
OpenAI says inputs and outputs from its business, enterprise, education, healthcare and API products are not used to train models by default unless the organization opts in. If you use one of these products through an employer, school or developer account, check the organization’s contract and administrator settings before assuming the consumer setting applies. An administrator’s opt-in can change how that workspace handles data.

Grok on X
Disable training and fine-tuning on X
- Open Settings and privacy on X.
- Choose Privacy & Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Turn off Allow your public data as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.
X says opting out still lets you use Grok. The setting is intended to stop the covered public data and Grok interactions, inputs and results from being used to train or fine-tune Grok and xAI’s underlying models.
Do not send optional feedback after opting out
X documents a feedback exception: feedback you submit can still be used for training even after you opt out. Treat a thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written explanation as a separate disclosure. If you would not want that text in a training pipeline, do not send the feedback.

Make the X account private
Making an X account private prevents its posts from being used to train Grok and xAI’s underlying models. This changes the audience for future posts as well as the training exposure. It does not automatically erase historical content or guarantee that information already incorporated into a model can be recovered.

- Open Settings on Grok.com.
- Choose Data.
- Open Improve the Model.
- Disable the control.
Mobile settings
- Open the Grok mobile app.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Data Controls.
- Open Improve the model and disable it.
xAI says new conversations after you opt out are not used for training. Its Private Chat mode also excludes Private Chat content and interactions from model training. Choose Private Chat before entering sensitive material; switching modes afterward cannot retroactively change how an earlier conversation was handled.

xAI warns that unauthenticated use may lack an opt-out in some regions outside the European Union and United Kingdom. If you are using Grok without signing in, look for the data-control setting before entering personal information. If the control is absent, do not treat the session as private; use a signed-in account with the available control or avoid submitting the information.
Facebook and Instagram: Meta’s public-post objection
What Meta’s planned use covered
In 2025, Hamburg’s data-protection authority reported that Meta planned to use public posts, comments, photos and captions from adult Facebook and Instagram users for AI training, including older material. The issue concerned public social content, not only prompts typed into an AI chat box. The authority also warned in 2024 that people without Meta accounts could be affected by third-party data Meta had acquired for training.
Meta described its legal basis in the European context as legitimate interest under GDPR Article 6(1)(f). The availability and wording of an objection route depend on jurisdiction, so a control described for European users should not be assumed to exist everywhere.

File an objection if the route is offered
European users could object through Facebook or Instagram forms or through in-app prompts. If your accounts are linked, one objection in Accounts Centre may cover both Facebook and Instagram. Follow the form’s confirmation steps and save the confirmation or a screenshot.
Content posted on another person’s account is a separate complication. Whether that material is covered can depend on the account holder’s objection, not only on the person shown in a photo or mentioned in a caption. If you are concerned about someone else’s post, ask that account holder to review the relevant control.
Understand the deadline and irreversibility
The Hamburg authority said an objection lodged after training begins is prospective. Data already incorporated into a model cannot be removed with current technology. Its commissioner, Thomas Fuchs, put the timing plainly: “The only way to protect yourself here is to object in good time. If so, then now.” An objection can limit later use; it is not a guaranteed way to make an existing model forget a post.

Training, personalization, storage and feedback are different data flows
A training switch is not a universal privacy switch. Services can process data for several purposes, each with its own control.
- Model training or improvement: using conversations, posts or other inputs to improve a model or fine-tune it.
- Personalization and memory: using information to tailor replies or remember preferences. Turning off training does not necessarily clear memories.
- Storage and history: retaining chats so you can view them later. A conversation can remain in history even when it is excluded from training.
- Feedback: sending ratings or comments to a separate review or improvement process. X explicitly documents feedback as an exception after opt-out.
- Safety and abuse monitoring: retaining or reviewing content for security. OpenAI’s Temporary Chat can be retained for up to 30 days for this reason.
When your goal is privacy, identify which flow you are trying to stop. Disable training, clear memories if the service offers a separate control, delete stored conversations, and avoid optional feedback rather than assuming one switch handles all four.

How to delete old conversations
Deletion is separate from training prevention. Turning off model improvement does not delete saved chats, and deleting a chat now cannot guarantee that information already used in model training will disappear from the model.
- Use the service’s conversation or chat-history controls to delete individual chats or the available history range.
- Check for a separate memory or personalization page and remove saved items there.
- Review uploaded files, connected-app permissions and shared links; deleting a chat may not remove a copy held elsewhere.
- Use the provider’s privacy or data-request portal when you need an account-data access or deletion request rather than only a history change.
- After deletion, verify that the conversation no longer appears in history and review the service’s stated retention period for safety, fraud or legal purposes.
Do not claim that deletion “untrains” a model unless the provider specifically promises that outcome. The Hamburg authority’s warning about already incorporated data applies to the central technical limitation: removing a source record is not the same as reversing learned model parameters.
Use private modes correctly
Before you type
Choose Temporary Chat or Private Chat before entering the sensitive prompt, attachment or personal identifier. These modes are designed to reduce future training exposure, but they are not a license to share secrets. The provider may still retain content temporarily for safety, and availability can vary by region, login state or product tier.
Minimize what you submit
- Remove names, account numbers, addresses, medical details and employer-confidential text.
- Replace real identifiers with neutral labels such as
CLIENT_AorPROJECT_X. - Crop screenshots to the smallest area needed for the answer.
- Do not paste an entire contract, inbox or customer list when a short excerpt will do.
- Assume uploaded images, files and pasted text receive the same privacy treatment as typed prompts unless the provider states otherwise.
End the session deliberately
Close or delete the conversation when finished, revoke temporary links, and remove downloaded exports from shared devices. These actions reduce ordinary account exposure even when they cannot reverse model training.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I switched off ChatGPT training, so my old chats are gone.”
Fix: Delete the old conversations separately and review memory or personalization controls. The training switch only changes how new conversations are handled.
“I opted out on X, so my Grok feedback is excluded.”
Fix: Do not submit feedback when privacy matters. X documents feedback as a separate possible training source.
“My Instagram profile is private, so every photo mentioning me is excluded.”
Fix: Review public posts and ask the account holder who published a photo or caption to use the applicable objection route. Meta’s coverage can depend on the publishing account.
“Private Chat means nothing is retained.”
Fix: Check the provider’s safety-retention statement and regional availability. OpenAI’s Temporary Chat may be retained for up to 30 days, and xAI warns that unauthenticated users in some regions may lack an opt-out.

Fix: Keep a short inventory of the services you use and repeat the privacy check in each account. There is no cross-company setting.
A repeatable privacy checklist
- List every AI assistant, social network with an AI feature and workplace AI account you use.
- Record whether each service has a training, model-improvement or data-sharing switch.
- Turn the switch off and note the date.
- Enable Temporary Chat or Private Chat before sensitive work.
- Leave optional feedback blank unless you accept its stated reuse.
- Delete old chats and clear memories when those are the actual goals.
- Check regional objection forms, especially for Meta public-content use in Europe.
- Review the settings again after a major app update or account migration.
The practical boundary is clear: opting out protects future submissions where the provider honors the control; deletion removes stored account records where the provider’s process allows it; neither action reliably rewrites a model that has already learned from the data.
