How to stop apps from tracking you across other apps and websites on iPhone

The fastest way to block permission for cross-company app tracking is Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking, then turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. Apple says this stops tracking prompts and treats requests made while the switch is off as though you chose Ask App Not to Track. You can also leave requests enabled and review each app on the same screen.

Turn off app-tracking requests on iPhone

These steps match the current iPhone settings labels documented in Apple’s iOS 27 user guides. Labels can move when iOS is updated, so use the nearest equivalent if your version displays a slightly different layout.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap Tracking.
  4. Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track.

With the switch off, apps cannot present a tracking-permission prompt. Apple says a request made in this state is handled as if you selected Ask App Not to Track. This is the single global action that addresses the question of apps tracking you across other companies’ apps and websites.

Block or allow one app at a time

If you want to decide separately for each app, leave Allow Apps to Request to Track on. The list below it shows apps that have requested permission. Turn an individual app’s switch off to deny it, or on to allow it when the app has requested access. Apple says these choices can be changed later, so a decision is not permanent.

What iPhone’s Tracking permission actually controls

The setting is part of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) system. ATT covers a specific activity: linking information that identifies you or your device across third-party apps, websites or other locations for targeted advertising, advertising measurement or sharing with data brokers. An app must request your permission for that defined activity.

When you choose Ask App Not to Track, Apple says the app cannot access the system advertising identifier, commonly called the IDFA, for tracking. It also may not use other identifying information, such as an email address, to track you for the purpose covered by ATT. Apple’s support guidance says you can still use the full capabilities of the app regardless of whether you allow tracking.

That protection is substantial, but it is not a promise that every form of data collection stops. ATT does not turn an app into an offline program, erase information you already gave its own service, or prohibit every type of analytics. A service can still process information within its own operation under its privacy policy, and an app can still show advertising that is not based on cross-company tracking. The practical result is a limit on the defined cross-company advertising, measurement and data-broker activity, not a universal ban on data handling.

Why an app can still appear to know something about you

You may continue to see recommendations or advertisements after denying ATT. They can be based on activity inside that company’s own service, information you supplied directly, contextual details about the page or content, or a broad audience rather than a profile linked across unrelated apps. Seeing an ad therefore does not by itself prove that the ATT setting failed.

Global switch or individual permissions: which should you use?

The two approaches solve slightly different management problems:

Choice What happens When it fits
Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track Stops future prompts and treats requests as Ask App Not to Track. You want a consistent no-tracking response without reviewing every app.
Leave requests on and turn off selected apps Apps you deny are treated as Ask App Not to Track; other apps can still ask. You want to make exceptions or decide app by app.
Change a choice later The Tracking screen lets you revise individual permissions. You changed your mind or want to audit an app after using it.

Neither choice requires a subscription, accessory or separate privacy application. The control is built into iOS.

If the Tracking switch is missing or unavailable

Apple lists several situations in which the global request setting may not be available to turn on. This can be normal account or device behavior rather than a broken installation.

  • The Apple Account belongs to a child or to someone under 18 by birth year. The exact age threshold for a child account varies by country or region.
  • The iPhone uses a managed education or business Apple Account.
  • A device-management profile restricts tracking settings.
  • The Apple Account was created within the last three days.

If one of these conditions applies, use the controls that are available on the Tracking screen and check with the organization managing the phone when appropriate. A managed device may intentionally prevent the user from changing privacy settings.

Stop cross-site tracking in Safari separately

App tracking permission and Safari website tracking are different controls. To protect browsing in Safari, open Settings > Apps > Safari and leave Prevent Cross-Site Tracking turned on. Apple describes this feature as limiting third-party cookies and data by default. Turning it off allows cross-site tracking in Safari.

This Safari option applies to websites you visit in Safari; it is not a replacement for the ATT switch under Privacy & Security > Tracking. If your goal includes both apps and browser activity, configure both settings.

Use Safari Privacy Report to inspect a page

Safari’s Privacy Report summarizes trackers encountered and prevented by Intelligent Tracking Prevention on the current webpage. It is useful when you want to see what Safari blocked during browsing. The report describes the browser activity it covers; it is not a guarantee that every possible tracking technique, app activity or cross-company identifier has been detected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep Hide IP Address enabled when appropriate

Safari also offers a Hide IP Address control. Safari automatically protects your address from known trackers. Eligible iCloud+ subscribers can use the feature to protect the address from trackers and websites while browsing Safari. Hiding an IP address can reduce one way a website identifies a connection, but it does not deny an app’s ATT permission and does not prevent all forms of tracking.

What Private Browsing does and does not do

Safari’s Private Browsing mode mainly changes what is stored and shared locally: Apple says private tabs do not appear in iPhone History or in the tab list on your other devices. Apple does not describe Private Browsing as a universal opt-out from app tracking, so use the Tracking and Safari privacy controls for those purposes.

Inspect app access with App Privacy Report

To see how apps use sensitive information and device sensors, open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report and turn it on. The report starts collecting only after activation, so it cannot reconstruct activity from before you enabled it.

After it has gathered data, Apple says the report shows when and how often apps accessed covered privacy-sensitive data or sensors during the past seven days. It is encrypted and stored only on the iPhone. Review the entries for patterns that deserve attention, such as an app accessing a sensor at times you did not expect, then decide whether the app still needs the related permission in Settings > Privacy & Security.

App Privacy Report and ATT answer different questions. The report concerns access to covered data and sensors on the device; it is not a complete record of cross-app advertising identifiers or proof that every tracking relationship has been found.

Where iCloud Private Relay fits

iCloud Private Relay is an optional iCloud+ feature for Safari, not the ATT permission switch. When enabled, iPhone Safari traffic is encrypted and sent through two separate internet relays. Apple says this prevents websites from seeing your IP address and exact location and prevents network providers from collecting your Safari browsing activity.

Private Relay can therefore complement the settings above when your concern is Safari network privacy. It does not grant or deny an app permission to track you across other companies’ apps and websites. Apple also notes that Private Relay is not available in every country or region, and it requires an eligible iCloud+ subscription.

How the iPhone privacy controls compare

Control Primary scope What it does Important limitation
ATT: Allow Apps to Request to Track off Tracking across other companies’ apps and websites Stops prompts and treats requests as Ask App Not to Track. It is not a blanket statement that every kind of data collection ends.
Safari Prevent Cross-Site Tracking Safari website browsing Limits third-party cookies and data. It does not control app tracking permissions.
Safari Privacy Report Trackers on the current webpage Summarizes trackers encountered and prevented by Intelligent Tracking Prevention. It reports stated browser activity, not guaranteed complete detection.
App Privacy Report App access to sensitive data and sensors Shows when and how often apps accessed covered data during the seven days after activation. It starts only when enabled and is not a universal cross-app tracking report.
iCloud Private Relay Safari network traffic Helps conceal IP address and exact location from websites and Safari activity from network providers. It requires iCloud+, is region dependent and does not replace ATT.

What to check after changing the settings

  1. Return to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and confirm that Allow Apps to Request to Track is off, or verify that the specific apps you want to deny are switched off.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Safari and confirm that Prevent Cross-Site Tracking remains on.
  3. If you want an activity record, enable App Privacy Report and allow time for it to collect information. The report will not contain a useful history immediately after activation.
  4. Review app behavior in context. A continuing in-app recommendation or advertisement is not conclusive evidence of ATT tracking, because ATT does not prohibit first-party use or every form of analytics.

Common problems and their explanations

An app keeps asking about tracking

First check that the global switch is actually off and that you are viewing the correct iPhone user account. With the switch off, Apple says requests are treated as though you selected Ask App Not to Track. If a prompt appears to be an ordinary notification, marketing consent request or sign-in request rather than the system ATT permission dialog, it may concern a different policy or service choice. Read the wording before granting anything.

I still see personalized-looking ads

ATT limits the defined cross-company tracking activity; it does not remove every advertisement or prevent a company from using information within its own service. Contextual advertising, first-party activity and broad audience targeting can continue. The appearance of an ad alone cannot identify which method produced it.

Safari still shows trackers

Privacy Report is an inspection tool, not a promise that no tracker will ever appear. Confirm that Prevent Cross-Site Tracking is on, then remember that the report covers Safari’s stated Intelligent Tracking Prevention activity on the page. It does not report app behavior outside Safari.

The App Privacy Report is empty

The report begins collecting only after you enable it and may take time to populate. It covers the past seven days of activity after activation, not an earlier period. An empty or short report immediately after setup is therefore expected.

I cannot change the global setting

Check whether the Apple Account is a child or under-18 account, managed by an education or business organization, recently created within three days, or controlled by a device-management profile. Age rules differ by region. On an organization-managed iPhone, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need a VPN, accessory or paid app?

No purchase is needed to stop ATT tracking requests. A generic VPN, screen protector, router, ordinary accessory or privacy book does not change iPhone’s ATT permission. Network privacy tools may address other traffic, but they are not substitutes for Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. Configure Apple’s built-in controls first, and treat any additional service as a separate decision with its own scope and limitations.

Practical privacy checklist

  • Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track for a global no-request response, or deny apps individually.
  • Keep Safari’s Prevent Cross-Site Tracking enabled.
  • Use Safari Privacy Report to inspect trackers encountered on a webpage.
  • Enable App Privacy Report when you want an on-device, seven-day view of covered app access.
  • Consider Hide IP Address or iCloud Private Relay for Safari-specific network privacy, understanding that neither replaces ATT.
  • Recheck settings after major iOS updates because labels and locations can change.

The bottom line

For the exact problem of apps tracking you across other apps and websites, turn off Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking > Allow Apps to Request to Track. Apple treats subsequent requests as Ask App Not to Track, blocks access to the IDFA for that purpose and prohibits the defined use of other identifying information for cross-company tracking. Add Safari’s separate cross-site control and the reporting tools if your privacy goal also includes browser activity and visibility into device access.
