Each recipient then receives a separate SMS and replies return as separate conversations. This setting changes group behavior; it does not disable every MMS message on an Android phone.
When the problem involves a one-to-one message, or an MMS that will not send, use the send-method indicator and the connectivity checks below instead. Menu names can differ in another messaging app or on a different Android manufacturer’s software.

What the mass-text setting actually changes
Google Messages offers two different ways to handle a group when a normal group chat is not using an RCS group conversation:

The mass-text choice is therefore a way to avoid one group MMS conversation, not a universal “turn off MMS” switch. It is useful when separate replies are acceptable and avoiding group MMS is more important than preserving a shared thread.

Change a Google Messages group to separate SMS messages
- Open Google Messages. This path applies to Google’s app; another manufacturer’s messaging app may place the control elsewhere or may not offer the same option.
- Tap your profile icon near the top of the Messages screen.
- Open Messages settings.
- Tap Advanced.
- Open Group messaging.
- Select Send an SMS reply to all recipients and get individual replies (mass text).
New group messages handled by this setting are sent as separate SMS messages. The recipients do not receive one shared MMS thread, and their answers come back as individual conversations. That is expected behavior, not a delivery error.
When this is the right choice
- You need to notify several people but do not need a shared conversation.
- One or more recipients cannot use RCS and group MMS is unreliable or unwanted.
- You prefer each reply to remain in a separate conversation.
When it is the wrong choice
- You need everyone to see every reply in one thread.
- You need the group features supplied by RCS.
- The actual failure is a missing data connection, an incorrect APN, an inactive SIM or a carrier account problem.
Why a group message becomes MMS
Google Messages selects the available messaging method for the participants in a conversation. If you add someone who does not have the RCS tag, Google says the conversation becomes an MMS chat. A participant may lack the tag because RCS is disabled, unsupported by the device or carrier, unavailable in that region, or temporarily unreachable.
RCS is not guaranteed merely because your own phone supports it. Every relevant participant and the network path must meet the requirements. If all participants have RCS enabled and supported, Google Messages may use an RCS group conversation. If one participant cannot use RCS, the app can fall back to SMS or MMS behavior.
Check the participant list before changing settings
Open the group details and look at the members. A newly added contact without an RCS indicator is a common reason the conversation changes method. Removing that person may alter the available method, but it does not guarantee an RCS group unless the remaining participants, devices, carriers and region all support it.

If you simply want separate delivery regardless of who has RCS, the mass-text option is more predictable. It deliberately sacrifices the shared reply thread.
Use the compose bar to see the planned sending method
For an ordinary one-to-one message, or before sending in a group, inspect the send icon in the compose bar. Google Messages uses that indicator to show whether the message is intended to travel over Wi-Fi or mobile data, as SMS, or as MMS. The label or icon can change as the recipient list and connectivity change.
What the indicator tells you
- An RCS or Wi-Fi/mobile-data indication means the app expects to use an internet-based path.
- An SMS indication means the message is planned as a text message to a phone number.
- An MMS indication means the app is preparing a multimedia or group message through MMS service.
Check the icon immediately before tapping Send, especially after adding or removing a participant. This is more reliable than assuming that every message from the same conversation will always use the same method.

Check RCS status in Google Messages
To inspect the account’s RCS state, open Profile icon > Messages settings > RCS chats. The status can show whether RCS is connected or unavailable. A connected status on your phone does not override a participant’s, device’s or carrier’s limitations.

If the group still sends as MMS
1. Confirm that the setting was saved
Return to Profile icon > Messages settings > Advanced > Group messaging and verify that the mass-text option remains selected. If it is selected but only one particular conversation behaves differently, compare that conversation’s participants with another group. The setting addresses group handling; it does not force every one-to-one message to become SMS.
2. Look for an RCS or non-RCS participant
Check whether the group includes a contact without the RCS tag. A single participant who cannot use RCS can cause the group to use MMS. Ask the contact to check RCS availability in their own messaging app, but do not assume that enabling it will work immediately: device, carrier and regional support still matter.
3. Check connectivity
RCS requires an internet connection, while MMS also relies on mobile-data service and carrier configuration. If the phone has weak or absent service, the app may fall back to SMS or MMS, or an MMS may fail outright. Confirm that mobile data is enabled even if Wi-Fi is connected; Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically says to ensure that you have a data connection.

4. Read the send icon again
If the compose bar identifies the outgoing message as MMS, the app is making that choice for the current recipients and content. If it identifies SMS, the group may already be using separate delivery, or the conversation may not be a group at all. The icon is a diagnostic clue, not a promise that the carrier will successfully deliver the message.

Fix an MMS that will not send or receive
Changing group behavior will not repair a missing data connection or a carrier configuration problem. Work through these checks in order.
- Ensure mobile data is available. Turn mobile data on and verify that the phone shows cellular service. Wi-Fi alone may not provide the mobile-data path required by the carrier’s MMS service.
- Reset APN settings to default. In Android settings, open the mobile-network or cellular-network section, find the Access Point Names (APN) screen, open its menu and choose the option to reset APNs to default. The exact labels vary by Android version and manufacturer. Google recommends resetting to defaults; do not delete APNs or create random replacement entries.
- Update Google Messages. Install any available update from the phone’s app store. A current app is also important when troubleshooting RCS status and send-method indicators.
- Make Google Messages the default SMS app. In Android’s default-app settings, select Google Messages as the default SMS application if you intend to use it for SMS and MMS.
- Check the SIM and signal. Confirm that the SIM is inserted correctly, the phone has signal and airplane mode is off.
- Verify service and account eligibility. The carrier must support SMS/MMS on the line, and the plan or available credit must permit sending. Contact the carrier if service is suspended or the account has a messaging restriction.
- Retry with a simple message. After restoring data and network settings, send a new message and check the compose-bar method. If a basic MMS still fails, record the exact error and contact the carrier or device support rather than repeatedly changing RCS settings.
Do not confuse group MMS with every MMS message
People often ask, “How do I stop my texts from sending as MMS?” The answer depends on which message is changing method.
Only group conversations are affected
If one-to-one messages show SMS but groups show MMS, the group-messaging control is the relevant fix. Select mass text when individual replies are acceptable, or keep group MMS when one shared thread is necessary.

One-to-one messages show MMS
A one-to-one conversation can still display MMS in the compose bar. The group-messaging preference does not convert that message to SMS. Check the message type shown by the send icon, confirm mobile data and APN settings, and check whether the content or recipient setup requires the carrier’s MMS path. The available controls depend on the messaging app and carrier; Android does not provide one universal switch that disables MMS on every phone.
Messages alternate between RCS, SMS and MMS
Method changes can occur when a participant’s RCS availability changes or when connectivity drops. Use the RCS status screen and the compose-bar indicator to identify the current state instead of assuming that a prior message predicts the next one.
RCS changes, phone switches and missed messages
Google’s RCS guidance warns against routinely turning RCS off and on as a troubleshooting tactic. Doing so can remove you from group chats. If you changed phones, changed messaging apps or no longer have access to the previous device, use Google’s RCS deactivation process and the transition-specific troubleshooting instructions rather than repeatedly toggling the setting.
For a normal connectivity problem, first check the RCS status, mobile data, signal and carrier support. RCS can fall back to SMS or MMS when a participant or carrier does not support it, but fallback does not guarantee that a message will deliver if the underlying mobile-data or account service is unavailable.
Charges, data and carrier limitations
SMS and MMS billing is controlled by the carrier and plan. Google and Android help pages warn that carrier charges may apply. The exact price, allowance and policy are not universal, so check the terms for the line you are using instead of relying on a general fee estimate.
RCS uses an internet connection. Depending on how the message is transported and on your plan, mobile-data use may matter when Wi-Fi is unavailable. Carrier support, regional availability and device compatibility can also determine whether RCS is offered at all.
Android app and version differences
The menu path in this guide is specifically for Google Messages. Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus and other manufacturers may ship a different messaging app, rename settings or omit the mass-text control. If you cannot find Advanced > Group messaging, first confirm which app is set as the default SMS application and then consult that app’s own settings. Do not assume that a menu from Google Messages exists unchanged on another manufacturer’s software.
Labels can also move after an app or Android update. The functional clues remain the same: identify the current group-messaging choice, inspect the send icon, check RCS status, and verify mobile-data and APN configuration when MMS fails.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting mass text to preserve a group thread. Its defining behavior is separate SMS delivery and individual replies.
- Assuming the setting disables all MMS. It applies to group messaging in Google Messages, not every conversation or every Android app.
- Blaming RCS for an APN failure. A missing mobile-data connection or incorrect APN can prevent MMS even when RCS settings are correct.
- Deleting APNs. Google’s documented remedy is resetting APN settings to default.
- Toggling RCS repeatedly. Google warns that turning it off and on can remove you from group chats.
- Assuming Wi-Fi is enough for MMS. Check cellular mobile data and signal when the carrier’s MMS path is required.
- Using Google Messages instructions in another app without checking. Manufacturer apps can use different menus and capabilities.
- Assuming a carrier charge is the same everywhere. SMS/MMS pricing, allowances and eligibility depend on the plan and carrier.
