Android gives you two ways to stop automatic app archiving. To protect one app, open Settings > Apps, select it, and turn off Manage app if unused. To stop Google Play from archiving unused apps generally, open the Play Store, tap your profile photo, choose Settings > General, and turn off Automatically archive apps.
These controls have different scopes. The first leaves archiving enabled for other apps; the second disables the Play Store’s automatic-archiving setting more broadly. Labels and availability can vary by Android version, manufacturer and supported hardware.

What Android app archiving does
Archiving is a storage-saving action that removes an app’s installed software while retaining its icon and app data. Google’s Android help documentation says archiving removes the app software, permissions, temporary files and notifications, but keeps the app’s icon and data. The icon is usually faded so you can distinguish it from an installed app. See Google’s explanation of archived apps.

Your local app data is retained for a possible reinstall, but the app cannot run normally until its software is downloaded again. Reinstallation also depends on the app still being available in the relevant app store and on having enough free storage.

There are two separate decisions to make:
- Protect one app: disable Manage app if unused for that app only.
- Stop automatic archiving generally: disable Automatically archive apps in Google Play settings.
Choose the right control
| Control | Where to find it | Scope | What happens to other apps | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manage app if unused | Android Settings > Apps > an individual app | One selected app | Automatic archiving remains available for other apps | Keep a particular app installed even when Android considers it unused |
| Automatically archive apps | Play Store > profile photo > Settings > General | Google Play’s general automatic-archiving behavior | Stops the Play Store setting from automatically archiving unused apps broadly | Do not let automatic archiving happen across your apps |
If only one app must remain ready to open, use the per-app exclusion. If you do not want automatic archiving to occur at all through the Play Store, use the global switch. You can use both controls if you want to protect specific apps and also turn off the broader setting.
Stop one app from being archived
This method is the least disruptive: it protects the selected app without changing automatic storage management for the rest of the device.
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps. On some phones this may be labelled Apps & notifications or use a manufacturer-specific app-management label.
- Choose See all apps, if that option appears, then select the app you want to protect.
- On the app’s information screen, find Manage app if unused.
- Turn that setting off.
After the switch is off, Android should no longer apply its unused-app management rule to that app. The setting does not restore an app that has already been archived; it prevents the selected app from being managed in that way going forward.
If you cannot find the app
Use the Apps screen’s search field, if available, and search for the app’s installed name. A work profile, secondary user profile or disabled-app filter can change which apps are shown. Open the app from the profile in which it is installed; changing a similarly named app in another profile will not protect the copy you use.
If the switch is already off
An off switch means that this per-app exclusion is already active. If the app still appears faded, it was likely archived before the exclusion was changed. Restore it first by following the unarchive instructions below, then leave the exclusion off.

Turn off automatic archiving in Google Play
To disable the Play Store’s broader automatic-archiving option:
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile photo or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Open General.
- Find Automatically archive apps and switch it off.
This changes the Play Store setting rather than a single app’s Android Settings entry. Google documents this path in its storage guidance: Free up storage on your Android device.

What turning off the global option does not do
- It does not automatically reinstall an app that is already archived.
- It does not recover an app that has been permanently uninstalled.
- It does not create additional storage space; it simply stops this particular automatic-archiving behavior.
- It does not guarantee that a manufacturer’s separate unused-app feature is disabled if the phone provides one outside Google Play.
If a particular app must remain installed but you still want other storage-saving measures, the per-app setting is more targeted. If you want complete control over whether Play Store archiving happens, disable the global option as well.
Restore an app that is already archived
An archived app normally keeps its launcher icon, but the icon appears faded. Tapping it should start the reinstall process. The exact confirmation text can differ by device and Android version.
Restore from the faded icon
- Find the faded icon in the launcher or app list.
- Tap the icon.
- Allow Google Play to download and reinstall the app when prompted.
- Wait for installation to finish, then open the app normally.
This route works only when the app can still be obtained from the app store associated with the device. The app’s retained data can be used again after the software is restored, subject to the app’s own behavior.

Restore from Android Settings
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the archived app. Its entry may show an archived or disabled state.
- Open the app’s information screen and choose the available option to reinstall, unarchive or restore it.
- Confirm the download and wait for installation to complete.
Google notes that an archived app can be unarchived from its App info page. Wording and placement can vary, so look for an action that explicitly restores the app rather than clearing its data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRestore from the Play Store
- Open the Play Store and search for the app, or open its app details page from your account or library.
- Tap the button that reinstalls or unarchives the app.
- Confirm any permission or download prompts.
If the listing is no longer available, the app cannot be restored through that store. An app may also fail to reinstall when the device does not have enough free storage. These requirements are described in Google’s Android archiving guidance.
Why an archived app will not reinstall
The app is no longer available
Archiving preserves local data, not a permanent copy of the installer. If the developer’s listing has been removed, the app is unavailable in your country, or the app is otherwise no longer offered through the store, the normal unarchive process cannot download it.
There is not enough free storage
The device needs space for the app package and any installation files. Remove or move enough data to create free space, then retry the restore. Check storage in the device’s Settings app; the exact menu name varies by manufacturer.
The Play Store is unavailable or restricted
Google’s instructions require the app store to be installed for the normal restore process. A work-managed device, parental-control policy or disabled Play Store can prevent the download. If the phone is managed by an organization, the administrator may need to allow the installation.

The network or account is preventing the download
Retry on a stable connection and make sure the Play Store is signed in to the account that originally installed the app, when applicable. If the app was installed under another user or work profile, switch to that profile before searching for it.
The app is still faded after tapping it
Give the download time to begin, then check the Play Store’s pending downloads. If the process stops immediately, verify storage, connectivity and Play Store availability before trying again. Do not clear the app’s data unless you accept the possibility of losing the retained data that archiving was designed to keep.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the settings are missing
Google says some archiving steps work only on Android 15 and newer, and some require supported device hardware. Its help page does not provide a complete manufacturer-by-manufacturer list of supported models. If either setting is absent, first check the Android version and install any available system or Play Store updates. Then consult the phone manufacturer’s support documentation for its app-management menus: Google’s Android help page identifies the version and device caveat.
Check the Android version
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone, About device or the equivalent menu.
- Read the Android version entry.
Menu names and locations differ by manufacturer. The version check tells you whether an Android-version limitation could explain the missing control, but it does not by itself guarantee that every archiving option will appear.
Check that you are using the official Play Store
The global switch is a Google Play setting. If the phone uses a different app store, has Play Store disabled, or is running a managed configuration, the label may not be present. Reaching the setting through Play Store > profile photo > Settings > General is the relevant test.

Distinguish archiving from other unused-app features
Android’s app information screen can contain controls for permissions, battery use, notifications and background activity. Do not assume that every unused-app or storage control is the same as Manage app if unused. Use the exact label when you want to exclude an app from automatic archiving.
How to confirm that automatic archiving is stopped
There is no need to wait for an app to be archived as a test. Verify the setting directly:
- For one app, return to Settings > Apps > app name and confirm Manage app if unused is off.
- For the Play Store behavior, open Play Store > profile photo > Settings > General and confirm Automatically archive apps is off.
- If an icon is already faded, restore it separately; changing a switch does not itself reinstall archived software.
Take a screenshot of the setting only if you need a record for troubleshooting or support. The important evidence is the current switch state on the device profile where the app is installed.

What changes after you disable archiving
Storage use
Apps that remain installed continue to occupy their software storage. Turning off archiving therefore removes one automatic way of reclaiming space. If storage becomes tight, manage large videos, downloads and app caches deliberately, or remove apps you no longer need after confirming that their data is backed up.
Notifications and readiness
An installed app can continue to operate according to its own notification, battery and background settings. An archived app, by contrast, has its software, permissions, temporary files and notifications removed until it is restored. Disabling archiving is useful when you need an app to remain immediately available or need it to retain normal installed-app behavior.
App data
Archiving is designed to keep app data, but it is not a substitute for a backup. Important documents, game progress or locally stored account information should also be backed up using the app’s own export or cloud-sync feature when one is available.
A practical decision checklist
- Only one app is affected: open that app’s Android Settings page and turn off Manage app if unused.
- Several apps are being archived and you want the behavior stopped: turn off Automatically archive apps in Play Store settings.
- The app is already faded: restore it from the icon, Android App info or its Play Store details page.
- Restoration fails: verify that the app is still listed, the Play Store is available, and enough storage exists.
- A control is missing: check the Android version, device support and manufacturer-specific instructions.
The key distinction is scope: the Android Settings switch protects one named app, while the Play Store switch changes automatic archiving more broadly. Restore any app that was archived separately, because neither prevention setting downloads the missing software by itself.
