How to stop Android and desktop apps from sending duplicate notifications

Duplicate alerts usually have two different sources: a phone notification forwarded to Windows by Phone Link, and a second notification generated by the desktop app itself. Keep the alert source you want, then disable the other one. On Windows, open Phone Link > Settings > Features > Notifications and use View apps to turn off forwarding for a particular Android app. If the remaining alert is produced by the desktop client, change that client’s own notification or conversation settings. Android can also silence an app or only selected notification categories, but that removes the phone alert as well.

The quickest way to avoid silencing the wrong device is to watch what happens when you dismiss one copy. If the other copy disappears too, it is probably the same Phone Link item mirrored between devices. If it remains, a desktop client or another relay likely created an independent alert.

Identify which service created each alert

Do not start by switching off every notification. First determine whether the two banners are copies of one phone alert or two independently generated events. The fix depends on the source, not merely on the app name shown in the banner.

Phone Link forwarded notification

A forwarded notification normally carries the app identity and appearance of the Android notification inside the Phone Link experience or Windows notification center. It is controlled by Phone Link’s per-app list. If you dismiss that mirrored item on the PC, Phone Link also dismisses the corresponding notification on the Android phone, and dismissing it on the phone removes the mirrored item on Windows. This synchronization applies to the mirrored item only.

Phone Link can present an app in a notification feed, in the feed plus a Windows banner, or with forwarding disabled. Thus, seeing an item in Windows does not prove that a Windows version of the app generated it. Check whether the item is associated with Phone Link before changing the desktop program.

Desktop-native notification

A desktop client installed directly on Windows can create its own banner, sound, or taskbar badge. It may arrive at the same time as the forwarded phone alert, but it is not governed by Phone Link. Disabling Phone Link forwarding will leave this desktop alert intact; disabling the desktop client will leave the phone alert intact.

Desktop-native alerts can look different from mirrored alerts. One may show a Windows banner with the desktop client’s icon, while the other appears in Phone Link’s feed. A sound or badge without a matching Phone Link entry is another clue that the desktop client is acting independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other cross-device utilities

If you use a service other than Phone Link to relay Android notifications, its controls will be different. Look for a per-app notification list in that utility instead of applying the Phone Link path. The same source-based diagnosis still works: identify the relay, the Android app, and any independently installed desktop client.

For the common goal of keeping alerts on the phone while removing the extra Windows copy, filter the app in Phone Link. For the opposite goal—no alert on the phone but a desktop alert still allowed—turn off the app’s Android notifications and leave the desktop client configured as desired.

If you want neither copy, you may need two changes: disable Android notifications (or the relevant category) and disable the desktop client’s own alerts. Turning off only one source does not necessarily affect the other.

Turn off a forwarded Android app in Windows Phone Link

Microsoft’s current Phone Link controls let you suppress forwarding for one Android app without disabling notification syncing for every app.

  1. Open Phone Link on the Windows PC.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Features, then choose Notifications.
  4. Under Choose how apps show notifications, select View apps.
  5. Find the Android app that is producing the unwanted mirrored alert.
  6. Choose the option that disables that app’s forwarded notifications. Depending on the Phone Link build, the list can offer a notification feed, feed plus a Windows banner, or no forwarded notification. The menu may also label the control Turn off notifications from phone.

This leaves other Android apps eligible for forwarding. It also leaves a separately installed Windows client free to show its own notifications, so check that client if a second banner continues.

If you only want less intrusive mirroring rather than a complete block, choose the feed-only option when available. That removes the Windows banner while retaining the item inside Phone Link’s notification feed. If you want no Windows copy at all, select the option that turns off notifications from the phone for that app.

If the app is not listed

Confirm that the alert really came through Phone Link. A desktop-native alert will not appear in Phone Link’s app list. If the Android app was recently installed or its notification permission changed, reopen Phone Link and check the list again. For a different relay utility, use that utility’s settings instead.

Also check the exact app identity. A service may have separate entries for its main app, a companion app, or a work profile. Disabling one entry does not necessarily disable another source with a similar name.

Set up or repair Phone Link notification access

Phone Link cannot mirror Android notifications until its companion permission is granted on the phone.

  1. Open Phone Link on Windows and go to Notifications.
  2. Select Get started if notification setup has not been completed.
  3. When Android prompts for notification access, allow Link to Windows.
  4. Return to Phone Link and revisit Settings > Features > Notifications to set the per-app choices.

Permission names and confirmation screens can vary by Android manufacturer. If notification syncing stopped after working previously, Microsoft recommends turning Link to Windows notification access off and on again in Android’s notification-access settings, then reopening Phone Link. This reset is for a broken or missing feed; it is not the normal duplicate-notification fix.

Do not repeatedly reset notification access when the problem is simply two valid sources. Resetting can restore a feed, but it will not turn off a desktop client that is generating its own banner. Diagnose the source first, then use the permission reset only when expected phone notifications are missing.

Silence the Android copy instead

Use Android’s system controls only when you want the phone itself to stop alerting. This will not merely hide a Phone Link duplicate; it suppresses the selected notification on the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Android Settings.
  2. Choose Notifications, then App notifications.
  3. Select the app that is generating the alert.
  4. Turn off all notifications, or disable only the categories you do not want.

Google documents another route: touch and hold an incoming notification, then open its notification settings. From there you can usually disable the specific category responsible for the sound or banner while leaving other categories active.

Manufacturers and Android releases use different labels and menu locations. If the path does not match, search the Settings app for Notifications or App notifications. Category controls may not be available for every app, and an app can create several categories with different importance levels.

Use this route when the phone itself is too noisy, when no computer should receive the event, or when you intentionally want the desktop client to be the only alert source. If your goal is specifically “keep WhatsApp or another app on the phone, but stop it appearing on Windows,” Android is the wrong first setting; use Phone Link’s per-app filter.

Disable the desktop app’s own alert

When one copy is mirrored and the other is generated by a Windows client, change the client’s notification settings rather than Android’s. Open the desktop app and look for a section named Settings, Preferences, Notifications, or Privacy. Common controls include desktop banners, sounds, taskbar badges, message previews, and per-conversation mute options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some clients separate message alerts from call alerts, mentions, reactions, group activity, or status changes. Turn off only the event types that duplicate the phone alert if the app provides those controls. If it offers one master switch, disabling it may also remove useful desktop reminders.

Windows itself can add another layer. A desktop program may have its own notification preference while Windows notification settings control whether banners and sounds are allowed. If the app’s setting appears correct but a banner remains, inspect Windows notification permissions for that app as well. Conversely, changing Windows permissions cannot stop an event that is still being generated inside the client; it only controls how Windows displays it.

App settings can differ by service and version. Read the current app’s wording before assuming that muting a conversation affects only Windows.

WhatsApp as a version-sensitive example

WhatsApp’s Help Center search summary says that muting a chat on the phone also mutes it on WhatsApp Web and Desktop, and that Windows system notification settings can affect WhatsApp notification sounds. Because behavior can change with the app version and account configuration, verify the current in-app controls before relying on a mute to isolate one device. If you want phone alerts but not a Windows duplicate, Phone Link’s per-app filter is the more targeted control.

A chat mute is not necessarily the same as disabling all WhatsApp notifications. Check whether the app distinguishes individual chats, groups, calls, message previews, and sounds. If a muted conversation still produces a Windows alert, determine whether that alert came from Phone Link, WhatsApp Desktop, or both before changing additional settings.

Use notification categories to keep important events

Turning off an entire app is often excessive. On Android, inspect the categories shown under the app’s notification settings. You might keep direct messages enabled while disabling promotional, group, reaction, or background-status categories. The exact category names are defined by the app, and some apps expose only a single switch.

Categories can also have different importance levels. A category may remain enabled but stop producing a sound or banner if its Android importance is reduced. The available controls depend on the app and device, so do not assume every category can be independently edited.

If you use Phone Link, category-level filtering may still require two separate decisions: Android determines which events exist on the phone, while Phone Link determines whether that app’s phone notifications are forwarded to Windows. A category that remains enabled on Android can still be blocked from forwarding by the Phone Link app-level switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing a category on Android affects the phone first. It may also affect what Phone Link can mirror because a notification that Android no longer creates cannot be forwarded. This is different from blocking an existing Android notification only at the Phone Link layer.

Understand dismissal and synchronization

Dismissing a Phone Link notification on Windows dismisses its mirrored Android notification, and dismissing the Android item removes the mirrored Windows item. That behavior is useful when you simply want both views cleared at once.

It does not guarantee that two independently generated alerts will disappear together. A desktop client may already have created its own banner, sound, or badge. To prevent that second event from being created, disable the desktop client’s notification or mute the relevant conversation in that client.

Test with one new message after changing a setting. A previously generated banner may remain in the notification center even after forwarding is disabled, while future events follow the new rule. This helps distinguish a stale Windows item from a setting that failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Two banners appear, and one disappears when you dismiss the other

The disappearing item is probably the Phone Link mirror. Use Phone Link’s View apps list to disable forwarding for that app if you want to retain the phone alert and any desktop-native alert.

Two banners appear, but dismissing one leaves the other

They are likely independent notifications. Check whether one belongs to Phone Link and then inspect the desktop client’s own notification settings. If neither is from Phone Link, look for another phone-to-PC relay and change its per-app rules.

All notifications from the phone stopped

Do not use the Android app switch as a first response to this symptom. In Phone Link, check whether notifications are enabled globally and whether Link to Windows still has notification access on Android. Microsoft’s reset procedure is to toggle that access off and on again, then reopen Phone Link.

Only sensitive alerts or verification codes are missing

Microsoft notes that Android 15 can hide sensitive notifications, including certain verification codes, in Phone Link. This is a visibility and privacy behavior, not evidence of duplicate alerts. Check the Android and Phone Link privacy settings before changing per-app forwarding rules.

The phone is quiet after changing Windows settings

Changing Phone Link’s per-app forwarding setting should affect the Windows copy, not the Android app’s own notification. If the phone also became quiet, inspect Android’s app notification and category switches and restore the categories you still need.

The duplicate returns after an app update

Updates can rename notification categories or reset an app’s desktop preferences. Recheck the desktop client’s notification page and Android’s category list, then confirm the Phone Link app entry still has forwarding disabled. Avoid disabling the whole Android app unless that is the intended result.

A notification appears in the feed but not as a banner

That is usually a Phone Link display choice rather than a duplicate. In the app’s Phone Link entry, compare feed-only with feed-plus-banner behavior. Choose the display level that fits your workflow instead of disabling the Android app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The desktop app is closed but a Windows alert still appears

That points toward Phone Link or another relay, because a closed desktop client may not be the source. Check Phone Link’s notification feed and the app list, then inspect any other synchronization utility installed on the PC.

Privacy and workplace considerations

Forwarded notifications can expose message previews, one-time codes, or other private text on a shared or work-managed PC. Phone Link’s feed-versus-banner choices let you reduce how much appears on Windows, while Android’s app settings determine whether the phone displays the event at all. If the computer is shared, disabling forwarding for sensitive apps is safer than relying on dismissal after a preview has appeared.

Android 15’s handling of sensitive notifications means that the absence of a particular item in Phone Link may be intentional. Treat missing sensitive content separately from ordinary duplicate banners.

Consider whether a work profile, device-management policy, or shared Windows account changes what controls are available. If a setting is locked or keeps reverting, the computer or phone may be managed; avoid promising that a local notification switch can override an administrator policy.

A reliable order of operations

  1. Watch the next duplicate and identify whether each copy is from Phone Link, the Android app, or a desktop client.
  2. Decide whether the phone notification should remain.
  3. If the phone should remain enabled, disable forwarding for that app in Phone Link > Settings > Features > Notifications > View apps.
  4. If the phone should be silent, disable the app or selected categories under Android’s notification settings.
  5. If a second alert remains, open the desktop client and disable its banners, sounds, badges, or conversation notifications.
  6. If syncing is missing rather than duplicated, verify Link to Windows permission and toggle notification access off and on again.
  7. Send or wait for one new test notification, then confirm that the desired device still alerts and the unwanted source does not.

This sequence prevents the most common mistake: silencing the Android app when the unwanted event was only a mirrored Windows copy, or disabling Phone Link when the duplicate was actually produced by the desktop client.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I exclude WhatsApp’s notifications from appearing on Windows?

If the Windows copy is coming through Phone Link, open Phone Link > Settings > Features > Notifications > View apps, select WhatsApp, and turn off its forwarded notifications. This keeps WhatsApp notifications on Android. If WhatsApp Desktop still shows a separate banner, disable that client’s own notifications or mute the relevant conversation there.

Will turning off Phone Link notifications silence my Android phone?

No. Turning off forwarding for an app in Phone Link blocks the Windows copy while leaving the Android app’s notification enabled. Turning off the app or category in Android Settings does silence the phone notification.

Why do both notifications disappear when I dismiss one?

They are probably one Phone Link notification mirrored between devices. Microsoft says dismissal on the PC and Android is synchronized for the mirrored item. A separate desktop-native alert may not follow that behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a second alert remain after I disable Phone Link forwarding?

The remaining alert is likely generated by an independently installed desktop client or another phone-to-PC utility. Open that program’s notification settings and disable its banners, sounds, badges, or conversation alerts.

Can I block only one type of notification from an Android app?

Often. Android’s Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app] page may list categories that can be enabled or disabled individually. Category names and availability vary by Android version, manufacturer, and app.

What should I do if Phone Link stopped showing every phone notification?

Check that notifications are enabled in Phone Link and that Android still grants notification access to Link to Windows. Microsoft recommends turning that access off and on again, then reopening Phone Link. This is a repair step for missing syncing, not the usual duplicate-alert fix.

Why are verification codes or other sensitive alerts missing from Phone Link?

Microsoft notes that Android 15 can hide sensitive notifications, including certain verification codes, in Phone Link. Treat this as a privacy or visibility behavior rather than a duplicate-notification problem, and check the relevant Android and Phone Link settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do WhatsApp chat mutes apply to both phone and desktop?

WhatsApp’s Help Center summary says that muting a chat on the phone also mutes it on WhatsApp Web and Desktop, but behavior is version- and account-sensitive. Verify the current WhatsApp controls if you need a mute to affect only one device.

The Bottom Line

Find the source of each alert before changing settings. To keep Android notifications but remove the duplicate on Windows, use Phone Link > Settings > Features > Notifications > View apps and turn off forwarding for that app. To silence the phone, use Android’s app or category notification controls. If a banner remains, disable the desktop client’s own notifications. Phone Link dismissals synchronize with the mirrored Android item, but independently generated desktop alerts require their own setting.
