Those are different faults. On a Pixel, disable Turn off hotspot automatically; Google says a Pixel can shut the hotspot down after 10 minutes with no connected device. On a Samsung Galaxy, increase the inactivity timeout in Mobile Hotspot’s advanced settings. If a device is connected but has no internet, check mobile data, Data Saver, carrier tethering rules and your remaining tethering allowance instead of changing an idle-timeout setting.

| What you see | Most likely category | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The phone’s hotspot switch changes to Off and the Wi‑Fi network vanishes | Phone-side shutdown, often an idle timeout when nobody is connected | Change the automatic-off or inactivity setting for your phone model |
| The hotspot switch remains On, but a laptop or tablet says Disconnected | Client Wi‑Fi drop or a compatibility issue | Check whether another client can see and join the network; toggle the hotspot off and on |
| The client remains connected to the hotspot but websites do not load | Lost upstream mobile data, carrier restriction or exhausted tethering allowance | Test mobile data on the phone and check your plan and remaining tethering data |
| The phone’s regular Wi‑Fi turns off when hotspot sharing starts | Device capability or design limitation | Check whether your model supports Wi‑Fi and hotspot operation simultaneously |
Do not assume that every Android phone uses the same timeout. Android manufacturers change names, locations and available options by model and software version. A timeout setting is relevant only when no device is connected. It is not a general cure for every dropped connection.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet.
- Open Hotspot & tethering.
- Tap Wi‑Fi hotspot.
- Turn Turn off hotspot automatically off.
This setting addresses the case in which no device is connected. Google’s Pixel Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guidance says the hotspot automatically turns off after 10 minutes without a connected device. That figure applies to the Pixel behavior described by Google, not to every Android make.
If a client is already connected when the hotspot shuts down, disabling the idle setting may not solve the problem. Record the Pixel model, Android version, carrier and whether the client still appeared connected at the instant of failure; those details are needed for model-specific troubleshooting.
Check Pixel prerequisites
- Turn Data Saver off. Google says Wi‑Fi tethering requires Data Saver to be disabled.
- Confirm that mobile data works on the phone with Wi‑Fi disconnected. A hotspot can broadcast normally while the phone has no usable cellular data.
- Turn the hotspot off, wait a few seconds and turn it on again. This is Google’s basic hotspot troubleshooting step.
- Check whether your Pixel supports Wi‑Fi and hotspot sharing at the same time. Google uses the Pixel 7a as an example of a device that cannot keep both active in some configurations. If enabling the hotspot turns the phone’s Wi‑Fi off, that can be a capability limitation rather than a fault.
- Verify that your carrier permits tethering and that your plan has not reached its tethering limit.
Increase the timeout on a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s US support path for the inactivity control is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Choose Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- Tap Mobile Hotspot.
- Open Information, then Advanced.
- Tap Turn off when no device connected for.
- Select a longer interval from the choices your phone provides.
The option is an inactivity timeout: it keeps the hotspot available for longer when no client is attached. It does not prove that the setting will repair a hotspot that powers off while a laptop or tablet is actively connected.
Galaxy menu wording differs by model, carrier firmware and software version. If the path does not match, use Settings search for Mobile Hotspot, hotspot timeout or timeout. Do not change unrelated battery or network settings until you have established whether the phone is actually shutting the hotspot down.
Other Android phones: find the manufacturer’s equivalent control
On Android devices other than Pixel and Galaxy, open Settings and search for hotspot, tethering, timeout or turn off automatically. The control may be inside Network & internet, Connections, Personal hotspot or an overflow menu within the hotspot screen.

Android’s own help describes Wi‑Fi, USB and Bluetooth as sharing methods, while manufacturers decide the exact interface and timeout behavior. If no automatic-off control exists, the manufacturer may not expose one. Do not treat the Pixel 10-minute behavior as a universal Android rule. Search the phone maker’s support pages using the exact model and software version rather than applying instructions from a different device.
What the timeout setting can—and cannot—fix
Automatic-off controls are designed for an idle hotspot. They answer the question, “How long should the phone keep advertising a hotspot when nobody is using it?” They do not control every radio event, carrier policy or client Wi‑Fi decision.
- If the network disappears only after a period with zero connected devices, the Pixel or Galaxy timeout is the right place to start.
- If a laptop is actively connected when the phone switches the hotspot off, treat that as a separate fault. Capture the phone model, software version, carrier and connection state.
- If the hotspot remains visible and the client remains associated, changing a timeout will not restore missing cellular internet. Check mobile data and tethering allowances instead.
- If enabling hotspot sharing turns the phone’s Wi‑Fi off, verify whether simultaneous Wi‑Fi and hotspot operation is supported before trying repeated resets.
When the hotspot stays on but a device disconnects
Look at the hotspot switch on the phone immediately after the failure. If it is still on, the phone did not perform the idle shutdown. Check whether the client still lists the hotspot network and whether a second client can join.
Only one laptop or tablet drops
- Forget the hotspot network on that client and join it again using the current password.
- Toggle Wi‑Fi on the client off and on, then retry.
- Test another client. If the second device remains connected, investigate the first device’s Wi‑Fi adapter, saved network profile or operating-system network settings rather than the phone’s timeout.
- Keep the client close to the phone during testing so distance and radio interference are not confused with a phone shutdown.
Every client drops while the phone remains on
Toggle the hotspot off and on, then check whether mobile data is still available on the phone. If all clients repeatedly drop while one is actively connected, an idle-timeout setting is not the obvious explanation. Capture the exact model, Android or firmware version, carrier and timing of the failure before contacting the manufacturer or carrier; those variables determine which fixes are applicable.
When devices connect but have no internet
A connected Wi‑Fi client does not guarantee that the phone can provide cellular internet. Work through these checks in order:
- On the phone, turn Wi‑Fi off temporarily and open a web page using mobile data. If mobile data itself fails, the hotspot cannot provide internet.
- Check that mobile data is enabled and that the phone has usable signal.
- Turn Data Saver off if you are using a Pixel or another device whose tethering rules require it.
- Check the SIM and the carrier’s tethering policy, then confirm your plan’s remaining hotspot or tethering allowance. Samsung notes that other devices may connect to a Galaxy hotspot but lose internet access when tethering data is exhausted.
- Turn the hotspot off and back on, then reconnect the client.
Carrier controls can block tethering, restrict it after an allowance is consumed or require a plan that explicitly includes hotspot use. A phone that connects clients successfully is not evidence that the carrier permits unrestricted internet sharing. If the SIM is inactive or mobile service is unavailable, changing Wi‑Fi settings cannot restore the upstream connection.

Use USB or Bluetooth tethering when Wi‑Fi is unreliable
Wi‑Fi is convenient but not the only sharing method. Android and Pixel help document USB and Bluetooth tethering as alternatives. These methods still depend on carrier tethering support and on compatibility between the phone and client.
USB tethering
- Connect the phone to the client with a suitable USB data cable.
- Open the phone’s Hotspot & tethering or Mobile Hotspot and Tethering settings.
- Enable USB tethering after the cable is connected.
- Wait for the client to create a wired network connection, then test a web page.
Check both connector types and whether the host computer supports Android USB tethering before buying or changing cables. A cable intended only for charging may not provide the data connection tethering needs. Google notes that Mac computers cannot use USB tethering with Android, so a Mac user should verify compatibility rather than assuming a wired connection will appear. The practical physical requirement is a compatible phone-to-client cable; no particular brand or price is established by the support guidance.
Bluetooth tethering
- Pair the phone and client in Bluetooth settings.
- Enable Bluetooth tethering in the phone’s tethering settings.
- On the client, select the paired phone’s network-access or tethering option.
Bluetooth tethering depends on both devices’ supported profiles. Google notes that it is not compatible with Macs running macOS Monterey or later. Confirm support on the exact client before relying on it, especially when the client is a Mac.

Requirements and compatibility checklist
Before treating a failed hotspot as a software defect, verify the basic conditions for the sharing method you chose:
- Phone: identify the exact make and model, Android or firmware version and whether the manufacturer exposes an automatic-off control.
- Service: confirm an active SIM, working mobile data, carrier permission for tethering and remaining tethering data.
- Wi‑Fi client: note whether the client merely lost association or stayed connected without internet. Test a second client when possible.
- USB client: use a suitable data cable, confirm the connector fits both devices and check that the host operating system supports Android USB tethering. Mac computers are specifically excluded by Google’s Pixel guidance.
- Bluetooth client: pair the devices first and check operating-system compatibility. macOS Monterey and later do not support Android Bluetooth tethering according to Google.
- Power: use a compatible charger for long sessions, while remembering that charging does not override an automatic timeout.
This checklist prevents a common mistake: buying accessories or changing phone settings before confirming that the carrier, host device and selected tethering method are supported.
Manage battery and charging during long sessions
Tethering uses the phone’s cellular radio and Wi‑Fi hardware and can drain the battery quickly. Google recommends plugging devices in while tethering. Charging helps sustain a long session, but it does not disable an automatic timeout and does not by itself repair a client-side Wi‑Fi drop.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
Follow this sequence so each test answers one question:
Recommended Free Tools
- Observe the phone: after the failure, is the hotspot toggle On or Off?
- Observe the client: is it disconnected from Wi‑Fi, or connected without internet?
- Check idle status: if no device was connected, change the Pixel automatic-off setting or Galaxy inactivity interval.
- Check prerequisites: verify mobile data, disable Data Saver where required, and confirm carrier tethering support and remaining data.
- Restart the sharing session: toggle the hotspot off and on and reconnect one client.
- Compare devices: test a second client to separate a phone problem from a single client’s Wi‑Fi problem.
- Try another transport: use USB or Bluetooth only after confirming cable, operating-system and device compatibility.
- Escalate with evidence: provide the phone model, Android or firmware version, carrier, whether a client was connected, the hotspot toggle state and whether mobile data worked.
How to document a repeatable failure
Write down what happened in a fixed order rather than describing it only as “the hotspot disconnects.” Note whether the hotspot was idle or had an active client, the number and type of connected devices, the toggle state after failure, whether the client still displayed the network, and whether a web page loaded directly on the phone. Record the carrier and plan status, including any tethering allowance notice. Then repeat the test with one client and, if available, a second client. This evidence distinguishes a phone-side shutdown from a single client problem and gives carrier or manufacturer support the information it needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying the Pixel rule to every Android phone: the documented 10-minute idle shutdown is Pixel-specific guidance.
- Changing an idle timeout to fix an active-session failure: an inactivity control concerns periods with no connected device.
- Confusing Wi‑Fi association with internet access: a client can remain connected to the hotspot while the carrier blocks or exhausts tethering data.
- Assuming every phone can share Wi‑Fi and hotspot simultaneously: some models, including the Pixel 7a example in Google’s guidance, cannot.
- Buying a cable without checking compatibility: USB tethering needs a suitable data cable and a supported host; Mac compatibility is limited as described above.
- Assuming charging removes software limits: plugging in helps battery life but does not override an automatic shutdown setting.
- Assuming a timeout explains every shutdown: if a client was active, record the failure details instead of repeatedly changing an idle setting.
What information determines the next fix
If the documented settings do not resolve the problem, the decisive details are the exact phone model, Android or firmware version, carrier and plan, whether the hotspot was idle or had an active client, and whether the hotspot toggle changed to Off. Also note whether mobile data worked directly on the phone and whether USB or Bluetooth behaved differently. Without those facts, a claim that one universal Android setting will stop every disconnection would be unreliable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Pixel hotspot turn off after 10 minutes?
Google says a Pixel hotspot can turn off after 10 minutes when no device is connected. Open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi‑Fi hotspot and turn off Turn off hotspot automatically. This documented 10-minute behavior should not be generalized to every Android phone.
Will disabling the automatic-off setting fix a hotspot that disconnects an active laptop?
Not necessarily. The setting is for periods when no device is connected. If the laptop was actively connected, check whether the hotspot toggle stayed on, test another client, and record the phone model, software version and carrier for more specific troubleshooting.

Why can my device connect to the hotspot but not browse the web?
The Wi‑Fi connection can remain active even when cellular internet is unavailable. Test mobile data directly on the phone, check Data Saver, confirm the SIM and carrier allow tethering, and verify that your tethering allowance has not been exhausted.
Can Android share Wi‑Fi and a hotspot at the same time?
Not every phone supports both radios in that configuration. Google gives the Pixel 7a as an example of a device that cannot keep Wi‑Fi and hotspot active together in some configurations. If enabling hotspot turns Wi‑Fi off, check your model’s capabilities.
What do I need for USB tethering?
You need a suitable USB data cable, compatible connectors and a host computer that supports Android USB tethering. Connect the phone, enable USB tethering in Hotspot & tethering settings and test the wired connection. Google says Mac computers cannot use USB tethering with Android.
Does Bluetooth tethering work with every Mac?
No. Google notes that Bluetooth tethering is not compatible with Macs running macOS Monterey or later. Pair the phone and client and verify support on the exact operating systems before relying on this method.
Will plugging in the phone stop the hotspot from turning off?
Charging helps preserve battery during tethering, and Google recommends plugging the phone in for extended use. It does not disable an automatic-off timeout and does not fix a client Wi‑Fi drop or carrier restriction.
The Bottom Line
First identify whether the phone turned the hotspot off, a client lost Wi‑Fi, or the hotspot stayed connected without cellular internet. Disable Pixel’s automatic-off control or lengthen Samsung Galaxy’s inactivity interval only for an idle hotspot. For active-session failures, check mobile data, Data Saver, SIM and carrier tethering rules, remaining data and device compatibility. Test a second client, then consider USB or Bluetooth tethering with a supported cable and host. Charging can extend a session, but it cannot override software or carrier limits.
