To reduce what a Fire TV stores, you must change two separate sets of controls. On the television, open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings and review device, app, and—on supported smart TVs—over-the-air viewing data. For Alexa requests, open More > Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app, review the history, delete existing items, and choose an automatic-retention option.
These controls do not erase every record created by every app, and they do not disable all processing needed to operate Fire TV. A supported hands-free model can also disconnect its microphones, but the Alexa Voice Remote will still send a request when you press its voice button.

What you can stop—and what you cannot
Fire TV privacy is divided by data type and by scope. A setting on the television governs activity associated with that particular Fire TV. Alexa history controls govern requests linked to your Amazon account, including requests made through compatible devices. Third-party streaming apps may keep their own search and viewing records under their own policies.

The practical goal is therefore not a single universal switch. Apply the device controls, clean Alexa history, select a retention period, and then check any app whose search history you also want to remove.

1. Change Fire TV device and app-usage settings
Open the privacy screen
- Turn on the Fire TV and select the gear icon to open Settings.
- Choose Preferences.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Read each item shown on your model before changing it. Menu labels and available options vary by model, Fire OS version, television manufacturer, and region.
Privacy controls are device-specific. If you own several Fire TVs, repeat this review on every television; changing one device does not automatically change another.
Turn off Collect App Usage Data
Within Privacy Settings, find Collect App Usage Data. Amazon describes this control as covering third-party app activity such as when an app opens, closes, and how long it remains in use. Switch it off and confirm the choice if the television asks.
This opt-out is narrower than deleting an app’s internal history. It addresses the device-level activity data described by the Fire TV privacy controls; it does not direct a streaming service to erase searches, profiles, watch history, downloads, or recommendations stored by that service.

Your model may show a separate control for device usage data. This data can include navigation of the home screen, settings selections, and activity used to improve Fire TV products or customize marketing offers. Turn off the available device-usage option if you do not want that use, then read the confirmation text carefully.
Turning the option off does not mean that every Fire TV event stops being processed. Amazon says information required to provide device functions may continue to be processed. The control also does not govern all data associated with Amazon services, such as Prime Video, or every category of interest-based advertising data.
Check Over-the-air Viewing Data on a smart TV
Fire TV smart TVs may show Over-the-air Viewing Data in Privacy Settings. This option concerns viewing information from antenna content. If it appears and you do not want that data used for the purposes described on the screen, switch it off.

Streaming sticks and boxes generally do not show this television-specific option. Its absence does not indicate that another setting is broken; it may simply not apply to that hardware.
2. Delete Alexa voice and search requests
Use Alexa Privacy in the mobile app
- Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet.
- Select More.
- Choose Alexa Privacy.
- Open the history or data-management view.
- Filter or browse the relevant date and request, then review the available audio, transcript, typed-request, and response details.
- Delete individual items or use the available bulk-deletion command.
Alexa may group related interactions into chats. Review the whole chat when you want to remove context around a request rather than deleting only one line.
Use Amazon’s Alexa privacy settings on the web
If you prefer a browser, sign in to Amazon’s Alexa privacy settings and use the same history and data-management functions. The exact layout can change, but the relevant controls are the ones that let you review and delete voice recordings, their text transcripts, typed requests, and associated responses.
Deletion can affect personalization and features. In particular, removing voice history can affect Voice ID and other behavior that relies on prior interactions. Decide whether you want a clean history, preserved personalization, or a balance between the two before deleting everything.
3. Choose how long Alexa keeps future history
Automatic deletion after three or 18 months
Alexa Privacy offers automatic deletion choices of three months or 18 months for Alexa recordings and related history. Select the period that matches your preference and save the setting. These are product retention choices, not guarantees that every associated record disappears at the exact moment the period expires.
Choose not to save voice recordings
Some accounts can choose not to save voice recordings. Amazon says recordings are automatically deleted after processing under this choice. However, the associated transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat, unless you delete them sooner in Alexa Privacy.

That distinction matters when your goal is to remove text searches as well as audio. Selecting the no-recordings option is not the same as immediate deletion of every text trace.
Delete now instead of waiting
Use the history screen to delete existing recordings, transcripts, and typed requests immediately rather than relying only on a future retention rule. Amazon describes deletion as the start of a secure deletion process whose timing can vary. Related records, third-party data, information outside Amazon’s cloud, or data that has been de-identified may remain after the process begins.
4. Stop a Fire TV from listening for a wake word
Use the microphone-off button on supported hands-free models
Some Fire TV smart TVs and other hands-free Fire TV devices have a physical microphone on/off button. Pressing it disconnects power to the built-in microphone array. Amazon states that while those microphones are off, the device cannot record and stream audio to the cloud, even when you say the wake word.
Look for the microphone symbol or a sliding microphone switch on the television or device body. If your model has no such control, do not assume that a software privacy toggle provides the same hardware behavior; use the Alexa and Fire TV settings described above instead.
The remote microphone is separate
The microphone in an Alexa Voice Remote is not the same as the hands-free microphone array. The remote sends audio only after you press and hold its voice button and speak. A blue light bar appears on the TV while the request is being recorded to stream to the cloud.
Turning off the hands-free microphones does not disable this remote feature. To avoid sending a remote request, do not press the voice button; removing or storing the batteries is a physical precaution, but it does not delete previously stored Alexa history.

5. Understand what happens to search history
Voice searches made through the remote
A spoken title, actor, or command made with the remote is an Alexa request. Review and delete its recording, transcript, and typed equivalent in Alexa Privacy. If you select no saved recordings, the audio is handled under that setting, while the text can remain for the stated 30-day period after the last interaction in its chat.
Typed searches on the Fire TV interface
The documented Alexa controls do not establish that every text search typed directly into the Fire TV interface is erased by deleting Alexa history. Fire TV may use text input that is not an Alexa request, and the exact handling can depend on the software and service involved.
After changing Fire TV privacy settings, open the relevant app and look for its own account, privacy, search-history, or watch-history controls. If the app offers a separate web dashboard, deleting history there may be necessary as well.
Searches and viewing records held by apps
A streaming app can retain searches, viewing activity, recommendations, or profiles independently of Fire TV. Fire TV’s Collect App Usage Data switch does not function as a command to each app’s servers. Consult the app’s privacy notice and account settings for deletion or retention choices.

7. Troubleshooting when a control is missing or ineffective
The Privacy Settings menu has different names
Fire TV labels change across generations, software releases, and regions. Start at Settings and look under Preferences, then inspect every privacy-related item. Update the television’s software if an update is offered, restart it, and check again. Do not change a similarly named advertising option unless its description matches the data you want to control.
Collect App Usage Data is not listed
Some models or regions may not expose every control. Confirm that you are using the Fire TV device’s own Settings screen rather than an app’s settings. If the item still does not appear, use the options that are available and manage history in the individual apps and Alexa Privacy.
The microphone-off button does nothing
Only hardware equipped with a hands-free microphone array has this switch. Check the device documentation or look for a microphone indicator on the chassis. A remote-control microphone button is not evidence that the television itself has a hardware disconnect.
The remote still responds after microphones are off
This is expected. The hardware switch disables the built-in hands-free microphones, not the microphone in the Alexa Voice Remote. Avoid pressing the remote voice button when you do not want audio sent, and manage previously recorded requests in Alexa Privacy.
Deleted history still appears
Deletion starts a secure process rather than guaranteeing instant disappearance from every view. Allow for processing time, refresh the history page, and check whether the item is part of a chat with related entries. Some related, third-party, external, or de-identified records may not be removed by the same action.

Alexa can use prior interactions for personalization and Voice ID. If recommendations or recognition change after deletion, that is a feature consequence of removing the underlying history, not evidence that the deletion failed.
8. What these settings do not cover
- They do not disable all processing required to deliver Fire TV features.
- They do not automatically change privacy choices on another Fire TV owned by the same household.
- They do not erase every record held by Amazon services or every category of interest-based advertising data.
- They do not command third-party apps to delete their account-level searches, viewing history, or profiles.
- They do not prove that a typed search made outside Alexa is included in Alexa history.
- They do not remove data that has already been copied outside Amazon’s cloud or transformed into de-identified information.
9. A repeatable maintenance routine
- When you install or reset a Fire TV, open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings before signing into many apps.
- Turn off the device and app-usage options you do not want, and review the over-the-air option if your smart TV provides it.
- Open Alexa Privacy after voice searches or commands you consider sensitive; delete the relevant chat or items instead of waiting for automatic deletion.
- Set the Alexa retention period again whenever you add a new device or change the account used by the television.
- Review each streaming app’s privacy and history settings periodically, because those records are controlled separately.
- For a hands-free model, use the physical microphone switch during conversations or other situations in which you do not want wake-word detection.
Following this routine keeps the controls aligned: Fire TV settings reduce device-level collection, Alexa Privacy manages voice and typed requests tied to the account, and individual apps handle their own search records.
