Do not answer with more personal or intimate information. Filters can reduce unsafe output, but no documented system guarantees that an AI companion will never produce it.
The exact controls vary by service and can change without notice. Use the current help center for your app if a menu label differs from the paths below. If the messages continue after reporting and safety changes, contact the platform’s support or trust-and-safety team; if the service gives you no acceptable way to control the interaction, stop using it and consider deleting the account after checking what deletion does to your data.

What to do immediately
- Stop replying to the unwanted message. A conversational model may treat any response as a request to continue. Do not negotiate, flirt back, explain private circumstances, or send photographs, identity documents, location details, contact information, or other intimate material.
- Save the context before deleting anything. Take screenshots that show the message, the character or account name, and the date or time if the app displays it. Keep the conversation identifier or share link when available. A report may be harder to investigate after a chat is erased.
- Use the message-level control. Look for Report, Flag, Dislike, Safety feedback, or a similar option beside the message. Select the closest reason, such as sexual content, harassment, grooming, threats, or unwanted contact, and submit the report. A dislike or feedback button may improve a response without opening a formal case, so use the dedicated report option when one exists.
- End the current exposure. Close the chat, mute notifications, leave the conversation, block the character or user, or start a new conversation with a different character. These actions usually affect what you see next; they do not necessarily erase stored data or change the model’s behavior everywhere.
- Review safety and character settings. Check content preferences, age settings, character instructions, memory controls, and notification options. Turn off sexual or romantic role-play features if the service offers them. Treat a filter as a risk-reduction setting, not a promise that every future reply will be safe.
- Escalate if it continues. Send the saved evidence to the platform’s support or trust-and-safety channel. State when it happened, which character or account was involved, what control you used, and whether the messages are ongoing. Do not include unnecessary sensitive information in the ticket.
- Protect your account and data. Change your password if another person may have access, revoke unfamiliar sessions, and review connected accounts. If you shared sensitive information, read the service’s privacy and deletion controls. Removing a chat or uninstalling an app does not, by itself, prove that account data has been erased.
Choose the control that matches the problem
Different controls solve different parts of the problem. Use the fastest action that stops exposure, then add a report or account-level change when the behavior needs investigation or is likely to recur.

Names and effects differ by product. Do not assume that blocking a character deletes a transcript, that reporting blocks future messages, or that a privacy setting removes information already processed by the service.

Why an AI filter cannot guarantee safe messages
AI companions generate replies probabilistically. A platform can combine output classifiers, input controls, safety policies, human review, and user feedback, yet an unsafe or sexual reply can still pass through. Replika’s safety material acknowledges that the model may occasionally produce offensive, false, or unsafe responses and describes classification, feedback, and filtering as mitigation rather than a cure-all. That company-authored description is not a guarantee of the current implementation.
Character.AI similarly describes output classifiers and controls over user inputs, as well as a narrower searchable set of characters for teen users. Its Trust & Safety team says it reviews flagged and reported material. The platform also says its automated tools are evolving. A report is therefore worthwhile, but you should not assume it will produce a particular result or prevent the next unwanted output.
Character.AI: reporting and teen safeguards
Report the message and preserve evidence
Use the report or flag control attached to the offending Character.AI message, select the reason that best describes the violation, and submit it. Save screenshots or other context first if you may need to explain a pattern of behavior. Character.AI says its Trust & Safety team reviews flagged and reported content; that statement describes a review process, not a promised enforcement decision.
Reduce future exposure
Leave the conversation, mute notifications, and block or stop using the character if those controls are available in your current interface. Review content and age-related settings, but do not rely on them as an absolute barrier. A character’s description or a user-written instruction can influence a conversation without overriding the platform’s safety systems, and neither should be treated as a guarantee.

For teen accounts
Character.AI documents additional teen safeguards, including a narrower searchable set of characters. Its Safety Center also documents an optional parental insights feature. An invited parent or guardian can receive a weekly report showing a teen’s time spent on Character.AI and top characters. A teen can request removal of a shared parent email through the parental insights tab. This is activity reporting, not message-level monitoring or a promise that unwanted content will be blocked.
Replika: memories, history, reporting, and deletion
Change what Replika remembers
Replika’s Memory section lets you view, edit, or delete individual remembered details. Use it to remove a phone number, location, relationship detail, or other fact that you no longer want used in conversation. Memory editing is narrower than deleting a transcript: a detail can be removed while the original messages remain in your account history.
Delete the complete message history
Replika’s help documentation says there is currently no way to delete the entire message history without deleting the account. On mobile, the documented route is Settings > Account > Delete Account. On the web, it is Settings > My Profile > Delete Replika. Menu labels can change, so compare the current interface with the latest help-center instructions before confirming.

Understand Replika’s privacy and content rules
Replika’s terms prohibit harassment, pornographic content, and other listed categories. Its privacy policy, last updated May 27, 2026, says messages and other content are processed as part of the service and may be passed to third-party AI language-model providers to generate conversational responses. That is a description of the company’s stated processing, not a promise about every legal right or a substitute for reading the current policy.
For questions about data processing, the policy identifies [email protected] as a contact address. Avoid sending additional sensitive information while asking for help, and request only the details needed to resolve your issue.
If you already shared private or intimate material
Stop supplying more information and document what was sent. Review the app’s privacy policy, account settings, memory controls, connected services, and any formal data-deletion request process. Ask the service what it can remove and from which systems; do not assume that deleting one conversation, clearing a cache, or uninstalling the mobile app removes server-side copies, backups, or information sent to service providers.

- Remove payment details or connected accounts if you no longer intend to use the service, after checking whether doing so affects an open support case.
- If someone is threatening to publish intimate material, preserve the threats, avoid paying or sending more material, and contact local law enforcement or a qualified victim-support organization. If you face immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services.
- For a child or teenager, involve a trusted adult promptly. Do not make the young person handle reporting, deletion, or threats alone.
What to do when the messages keep coming
The same character continues after a report
Block or leave the character, mute notifications, and start no further conversation. Send a follow-up to support with the original report reference, timestamps, and screenshots. Explain whether the message appeared in a new chat or after a setting change. This gives the platform a reproducible account of the problem without requiring you to provoke another sexual response.

There is no report button
Check the message’s overflow menu, the conversation menu, the account’s safety page, and the app’s support form. Search the current help center for “report message,” “trust and safety,” or “abuse.” If no reporting or blocking control exists, stop using the service, preserve the evidence, and request account closure or data deletion through the available support contact.
The app sends notifications even after you leave
Mute the conversation inside the app, then disable that app’s notifications in your phone or browser settings. If notifications are sent by email or text, use the service’s notification preferences and your mail or messaging provider’s blocking tools. Keep the account evidence until you know whether a report or deletion request needs it.
The companion becomes sexual after you edit its personality
Do not keep testing the character with increasingly personal prompts. Remove sexual instructions or memories, reset the conversation if that option exists, and report the output. Personality controls can influence future replies but cannot override platform moderation or erase earlier processing.
You cannot access the account
Use the service’s account-recovery process, then secure the email account used for sign-in. Tell support that unwanted sexual content is involved and request help with both access and safety. Do not send passwords, authentication codes, identity documents, or intimate images through an unverified channel.
Special guidance for minors and caregivers
Age-specific controls are useful but are not substitutes for supervision and a trusted adult. A minor should stop replying, save the evidence without redistributing it, and tell a parent, guardian, school counselor, or another trusted adult. Caregivers should use the platform’s documented teen resources, check notification and account settings together, and avoid presenting an activity summary as proof that every message has been inspected.
Character.AI’s parental insights feature provides a weekly summary of time spent and top characters when a parent or guardian is invited. It does not document message-level monitoring or guarantee prevention of sexual content. Other services may offer different controls, so do not transfer one app’s assumptions to another.
A practical decision rule
- One unwanted message, no sensitive disclosure: stop replying, report it, leave or block the interaction, and review content settings.
- Repeated messages or a failed filter: preserve a fuller record, report the pattern to trust and safety, mute notifications, and stop using that character until the platform responds.
- Sensitive information was shared: secure the account, remove available memories or profile details, read the privacy policy, and submit a specific deletion or data-processing request.
- Threats, coercion, or a minor involved: involve a trusted adult or appropriate authorities, preserve evidence, and do not negotiate by sending more material.
- No effective controls or acceptable response: stop using the service and delete the account only after reviewing the service’s deletion consequences and recording anything you need.
Frequently asked questions
Will blocking a character erase what it already said?
Not necessarily. Blocking generally limits future interaction; history retention is controlled separately and differs by service. Preserve evidence before deleting a conversation and check the app’s privacy documentation for retention and deletion details.

Only if the service provides a documented deletion mechanism and completes it. A memory editor may remove selected facts while leaving conversation history, and uninstalling the app does not establish that server-side data was erased.
Should I report first or delete first?
Report first when you want the platform to investigate, because deleting the conversation may remove context needed for review. If continuing exposure is harmful, save the evidence, block or mute the interaction, and then report or request deletion.

What if the platform says its filters are working?
