Turn off the assistant’s memory or personalization to limit what it carries into future chats, then separately delete the memories and conversations that already contain details about other people. Also check saved files and connected apps: memory, chat history, and model-training controls are separate, and one switch rarely removes everything.
First, separate memory from chat history and training
Memory or personalization lets an assistant use information from earlier interactions to shape later answers. Chat history is the record of conversations. Model-improvement settings govern whether conversations may be used to improve models. These controls do different jobs: opting out of model improvement does not delete saved chats or memories.

For details about friends and family, handle both prevention and cleanup. Turn off the relevant memory feature, remove existing saved entries, and delete the source conversations or other copies. For a sensitive new discussion, use a temporary or memory-off option where available, and avoid including identifying details that are not needed.

Stop future personalization
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. The exact controls can vary by account and interface.
- Review saved memories and any memory summary. Turn off the available saved-memory and chat-history reference controls if you do not want ChatGPT to use those details in future responses.
OpenAI says that turning off Reference chat history schedules information derived from past chats for deletion within 30 days. The original conversations remain in chat history, and switching off memory does not itself delete separate saved memories. See OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.

Delete the information already saved
Remove the relevant saved memory or memory-summary detail, then delete the chat where the information appeared. Check archived as well as regular chats, and review Library files and connected apps if they contain the same information. Deleting only the original chat may leave a separate saved memory behind; OpenAI describes the places to check in its Memory FAQ.
Use Temporary Chat for a new sensitive discussion
Start a Temporary Chat and turn personalization off before you begin if you also want to avoid using existing memories. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, create or update memories, or train its models. They may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat. Details are in OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ.

Opt out of model improvement separately
If you also want to opt out of model improvement, go to Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone and turn it off. New conversations may still appear in chat history; this setting does not delete or hide saved chats. OpenAI explains the control in its Data Controls FAQ.

Stop personalization and remove its sources
Turn off Memory in Gemini’s Personal Intelligence settings to stop the documented use of past chats for personalization. Menu paths can differ between web and mobile versions; follow the current steps in Google’s Gemini personalization help.

Then delete the relevant chats in Gemini Apps Activity. If the detail came from a connected app, delete the matching chats and disconnect that app as well: deleting one source may leave the other available. Google says a deleted chat may take a short time to stop being used for personalization. Check Saved Info or saved instructions separately, since these persist until deleted and can be managed independently. Gemini controls do not change settings for other Google services. Choose what happens to Gemini activity
For a personal account, you can turn off Keep Activity or choose Turn off and delete activity. With Keep Activity off, Google says conversations may still be held with the account for up to 72 hours for service delivery and feedback, and some connected features are restricted. Turning off activity does not delete information held by other Google services.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, says activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default; users can choose 3 months, 36 months, or no auto-delete. It also says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years and are not deleted when a user deletes activity. These are Google’s published retention periods, not a guarantee that every item is treated identically. Consult the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub for the current account controls and exceptions.

Claude: inspect memory entries, not just conversations
Pause, delete, or reset memory
In the current memory experience, go to Settings > Memory to review topics, edit or delete entries, and turn memory or past-chat search off. Some accounts may show legacy controls under Settings > Capabilities; an organization may manage settings for a work account. Anthropic’s memory and chat-search help describes the available controls.

Pausing memory preserves existing entries but stops using or adding to them. Resetting memory permanently deletes the memory entries. You can also start an individual chat with memory off. Incognito chats are not saved to memory or chat history.
Delete the conversation and any related memory
Deleting a conversation alone may not remove memory entries associated with it. Review and delete those entries separately. Anthropic says consumer conversations deleted from history are removed from visible history immediately and automatically deleted from backend systems within 30 days. Memory and chat retention are still subject to the applicable account policy. Its Privacy Center explains deletion and retention.
Model improvement is another separate control. Anthropic says opting out stops new chats from being used for future training, but does not undo training already in progress or change models already trained; see its AI training settings guidance.

Retention periods above are the services’ own published statements as documented in 2026, not a common deletion standard. Account type, rollout, device, region, and organization policy can affect which settings or labels you see. Managed work or school accounts may have administrator-controlled rules.
Reduce what you disclose about other people
- Use a role or placeholder such as “my sibling” rather than a name, address, workplace, or other identifying detail.
- Summarize a situation instead of pasting private messages or records, and omit sensitive facts that are not necessary to get help.
- For a new sensitive conversation, choose the service’s temporary, incognito, or memory-off option before sharing anything.
OpenAI advises users not to share sensitive information they would not want used or reviewed, and notes that memory might retain information about important people in a user’s life; see its Memory and new controls announcement. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub similarly says, “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.”
