Keep raw credentials out of the agent process whenever practical, then prove the controls work by testing denied requests.
The most specific current guidance covers workspace agents connected to Slack, but the architecture applies to any agent that can act through shared chat, tools, APIs or retrieved data. OpenAI’s workspace-agent documentation, current as of October 13, 2026, warns that a personal connection configured for sharing can let other users act through the builder’s account. The exact labels and controls vary by platform.

Why shared-channel credentials are dangerous
A shared channel changes who can ask the agent to do something, but it does not automatically change whose authority the connector uses. If the connector is authenticated as a builder’s personal account, a message from another authorized channel participant may cause an action under that person’s permissions. The risk is delegation of authority, not merely accidental disclosure of a password.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn agent with a valid, broad token can read data, call tools or make changes whenever a user request, retrieved document or hostile message steers it toward those capabilities. OWASP’s agent-security guidance identifies prompt injection, tool abuse, privilege escalation and data exfiltration as related risks. A malicious instruction can arrive in a chat message or in content the agent retrieves; the agent does not need to reveal the token for the token’s authority to be misused.

There is no reliable “never reveal credentials” sentence that fixes this. OWASP’s LLM07:2025 guidance says the system prompt should not be treated as a secret or used as a security control, and that authorization bounds checks must not be delegated to the language model.
The control hierarchy that actually works
Use several independent boundaries. A failure in one layer should not grant unrestricted access through the next.
- Identity: use an identity created for the agent, separate from builders, operators and other agents.
- Audience: decide who may invoke the agent and through which surfaces.
- Scope: limit connectors, OAuth scopes, resources, channels, tools and action types.
- Execution policy: check the invoking user, requested action, parameters, resource and approval state at run time.
- Secret boundary: prevent raw credentials from entering model-readable prompts, logs or generated-code environments where possible.
- Observability: record who requested what, which identity acted, what decision was made and when, without recording secrets.
- Negative testing: verify that excluded channels, data and actions are actually denied.
Prompt instructions can shape behavior, but they are not an authorization layer. The enforcement point must be a connector, API gateway, policy service, tool wrapper or execution service that can reject a request independently of model output.

Step 1: inventory every credential path
Before changing the agent, list every way it could obtain authority. An apparently harmless chat integration may have several independent paths.
- Personal OAuth connections belonging to the builder or administrator.
- Shared OAuth connections that let multiple users invoke one owner’s account.
- Bot tokens and app-level tokens.
- API keys stored in configuration or secret stores.
- Secrets mounted as environment variables.
- Credentials exposed through tools, plugins, browser sessions or a proxy.
- Long-lived tokens copied into prompts, system instructions, test fixtures or logs.
Remove secret values from prompts, system instructions, examples, test cases and normal logs. OWASP specifically warns against placing credentials or connection strings in system prompts. Treat any secret that has appeared there as exposed and rotate it through the owning system.
For each credential, document its owner, audience, scopes, resources, expiration or rotation process, invocation surfaces and revocation method. If you cannot identify the owner or revoke the credential quickly, it is not suitable for a shared agent.
Step 2: create an agent-owned identity
Dedicated service-account connection
For a shared agent, create a service account or equivalent agent-owned identity. OpenAI’s Slack workspace-agent guidance says to “always ensure you are setting up agent-owned account connection using a service account” and to limit access to what the agent requires. Keep this identity separate from human operators and from other agents so that a mistake in one workflow does not transfer authority to another.
Recommended Free Tools
A service account is not automatically safe. If it has administrator-level access, the agent still has administrator-level authority. Grant only the resources, actions and scopes required for the defined job, and give the identity a short, documented purpose. Where the platform supports it, set an expiration or review date and assign a named owner responsible for revocation.

Per-user delegated connections
Some integrations can perform an action with the invoking user’s own authorization rather than a common account. This can reduce shared-account exposure, but availability and semantics differ by platform. Do not assume that a connector offers true per-user authorization merely because it displays a user picker. Confirm which identity is used for every read and write operation, how consent is recorded and what happens when the user leaves or loses access.
OpenAI’s cited Slack setup guidance requires shared authentication connections for its documented workspace-agent flow, so a per-user model should be treated as an architectural alternative only where the exact integration supports and enforces it.
Credential broker or proxy
A broker can accept a constrained request from the agent and attach credentials only after validating identity, action, parameters and resource. This is useful when several external services must be reached but the agent should never receive their raw keys.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The broker is a security boundary only if it performs those checks itself. Passing an unrestricted “run this API call” request to a proxy simply moves the risk one hop away. Reject unknown tools, unapproved methods, out-of-scope resource identifiers and parameters that exceed policy. Require explicit approval for high-impact operations.
Step 3: reduce permissions at every layer
Permissions are cumulative. Limiting a channel does not compensate for a connector that can read an entire workspace, and a narrow OAuth scope does not help if the agent can invoke an unrestricted administrative tool.
Connector and resource scope
Allow only the apps, data stores and resources required for the workflow. If the task is to post status updates, do not grant search, file download, directory enumeration or write access to unrelated systems. Separate read and write functions where the platform allows it, and expose only the specific tool functions the agent needs.
Slack OAuth scopes and bot identity
Slack’s OAuth documentation describes scopes as permissions for particular data access or actions; bot scopes apply to the app’s bot identity. Select the smallest set that supports the workflow, then review whether a newly added scope broadens access to historical messages, files, users or administrative operations. Keep a record of why each scope exists and remove scopes when the workflow changes.
Channel-scoped webhook
If the workflow only needs notification posting, a Slack incoming webhook configured for one channel may be appropriate. Slack documents that the webhook is set to post to its configured channel. It is not a general replacement for an interactive agent that must read messages, choose among channels or perform writes in multiple systems. Verify that the fixed-channel behavior matches the operational requirement before selecting it.

Action and parameter limits
Define allowed verbs and parameters, not just allowed services. For example, an agent may be permitted to create a draft but not send it, read a ticket but not close it, or post in one project channel but not invite users. Enforce resource identifiers against an allowlist or policy query at execution time. Never let a model-generated URL, SQL fragment or path silently determine the security boundary.
Step 4: control who can invoke the agent
Set the audience deliberately. Restrict the channels in which the agent is available, require membership in an approved group and decide whether replies, threads, mentions and scheduled runs are all allowed.
Do not assume a channel allowlist covers every route. OpenAI’s Slack setup guidance says its channel restrictions do not apply to direct messages. Audit direct messages separately, along with private channels, group messages, workflow triggers, scheduled tasks, webhooks and any API endpoint that can start a run.

- Can an unapproved person invoke the agent?
- Which user identity is passed to the policy layer?
- Does the route bypass channel or resource restrictions?
- Are replies and tool calls logged with the same context?
If the platform cannot provide the required distinction, disable the route or put the agent behind a gateway that can.
Step 5: enforce authorization outside the model
At every tool call, a policy layer should independently verify:
- the invoking user and current membership or role;
- the agent identity and permitted workflow;
- the requested action and tool;
- the target resource and tenant or project boundary;
- the parameters, including size, destination and recipients;
- any required human approval or change ticket;
- the current connector scope and credential state.
Reject the request if any check fails. Do not ask the model to decide whether it is allowed to call a tool, and do not treat a model-generated explanation as evidence of authorization. OWASP recommends independent validation of scope, privilege and approval state, including checks at query or action time.
Use deny-by-default behavior for unknown tools and missing context. Make policy decisions fail closed when the identity service, resource lookup or approval record is unavailable. Return a useful denial to the user without exposing policy internals or secret values.
Step 6: keep raw credentials out of agent-readable execution
A secrets vault can improve storage, rotation and access management, but storage alone does not make a secret invisible to the runtime. OpenAI’s sandbox-security documentation states that injecting a stored secret into the environment still exposes it to agent-generated code. The exact exposure depends on the runtime, but the design implication is general: a process that can read the environment may be able to use the credential.

Prefer a trusted execution service or credential broker that keeps the raw secret outside the model and agent process. Let the agent request a named, constrained operation; have the trusted component validate the request and perform the call. Return only the minimum result needed for the conversation, with sensitive fields redacted.
If direct injection is unavoidable, reduce blast radius:
- use a credential dedicated to one workflow;
- limit its scopes and destination hosts;
- avoid placing it in prompts, generated files or persistent logs;
- rotate it on a defined schedule and after suspected exposure;
- restrict outbound network access where possible;
- monitor unusual volume, destinations and action types.
Architecture options compared
| Pattern | Identity owner | Raw credential in agent process? | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated service-account connection | Agent or operating team | Depends on connector implementation | Shared agents with a stable, narrow job | Permissions can still be too broad unless scopes and resources are reduced |
| Per-user delegated connection | Invoking user | Depends on connector implementation | Actions that must follow each user’s rights | Not offered or enforced consistently; verify the exact integration |
| Credential broker or proxy | Trusted policy service | Can remain outside the agent | Multiple services or high-value credentials | Unsafe if it accepts unrestricted calls or skips resource checks |
| Channel-scoped webhook | Webhook or app identity | Webhook URL is a credential | Notification-only posting to one configured channel | Not a substitute for interactive read/write access |
Compare these patterns by identity ownership, scope granularity, per-user authorization, raw-secret exposure, audit quality and revocation speed. No cited source establishes a universal security ranking or a quantified reduction in incidents, so choose based on the workflow and verified platform behavior.
Step 7: design audit logs that help without leaking secrets
Record the agent identity, invoking user, invocation route, tool or action, target resource, policy decision, approval reference and timestamp. Distinguish agent activity from a human using the same external system. Capture denial reasons at a safe level, such as “resource outside policy,” rather than copying confidential content into the log.
Redact tokens, API keys, authorization headers, full message bodies and unnecessary personal data. Protect logs with access controls and retention rules. Review them for repeated denied requests, unexpected direct-message use, unusual destinations, privilege changes and actions outside normal volume or time patterns.
Step 8: test the denial cases
OpenAI’s setup guidance recommends trying an out-of-scope resource and confirming that access is denied. Perform this as a controlled, harmless test; never use a real secret or an unauthorized destructive operation.
| Test | Safe example | Expected result | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excluded channel | Ask the agent to post in a channel outside its allowlist | No post; clear denial | Channel policy decision and log identity |
| Direct message route | Invoke the agent from a DM if DMs are not approved | Blocked or routed to approved control | Whether the DM bypassed channel restrictions |
| Excluded data | Request a harmless record outside the permitted project | No data returned | Resource-level authorization check |
| Disallowed action | Ask for a draft-only agent to send a message | Action refused or approval requested | Tool and action policy |
| Unknown tool | Supply a tool name not on the allowlist | Tool call rejected | Fail-closed behavior |
| Missing approval | Attempt a high-impact operation without its approval record | No execution | Approval-state validation |
Repeat the matrix after connector, scope, channel or policy changes. A passing test is evidence about that configuration and time; it is not proof that every route or future change is safe.
Common approaches that fail
Sharing the builder’s personal connection
This gives other users a path to the builder’s authority and makes offboarding, accountability and revocation difficult. Replace it with an agent-owned identity or verified per-user delegation.
Best Value
Relying on a system prompt
“Never reveal the key” does not stop tool abuse, prompt injection or an authorized API call made for the wrong resource. Keep the instruction as a behavioral hint if useful, but enforce the rule at the tool or data boundary.
Assuming a vault solves runtime exposure
A vault protects storage and can rotate credentials; it does not prevent an agent process from using a secret that has been injected into its environment. Use a broker or trusted execution boundary when raw-secret isolation matters.
Allowlisting channels and ignoring DMs
Channel controls may not cover direct messages. Test every invocation surface and disable routes that cannot carry the required user and policy context.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Granting a broad token for convenience
Broad scopes increase the impact of a compromised prompt, mistaken instruction or malicious retrieved content. Start with the smallest action set and expand only for a documented requirement.
Logging everything
Unfiltered logs can become another credential-disclosure channel. Log decisions and identifiers needed for investigation while redacting secrets and unnecessary content.
Operational checklist
- Agent identity is separate from every human builder and operator.
- Credential owner, purpose, scopes, resources and revocation path are documented.
- Only required connectors, tools, actions and destinations are enabled.
- OAuth scopes have been reviewed for both read and write authority.
- Approved channels and invocation routes are explicit.
- Direct messages and other bypass surfaces have been tested independently.
- Execution-time policy checks validate user, agent, action, resource, parameters and approval.
- Unknown tools and missing policy context fail closed.
- Raw credentials are not copied into prompts, instructions, test cases or logs.
- Where secrets enter a runtime, the exposure and blast radius are documented.
- Audit records identify the invoking user and agent identity without secrets.
- Harmless negative tests demonstrate denial for excluded channels, data, actions and routes.
- Scope, identity and policy changes trigger a repeat of the test matrix.
What this means for Slack-connected workspace agents
For the documented OpenAI workspace-agent pattern, the practical baseline is an agent-owned service-account connection, least-privilege access to the required Slack resources, deliberate channel configuration and a separate review of direct messages. Treat the product’s labels and behavior as version-specific: the cited guidance was current on October 13, 2026, and platform controls can change.
For other agent platforms, carry over the principles rather than assuming identical settings. Verify whether the platform supports service accounts, per-user authorization, resource-level scopes, policy hooks, DM restrictions, secret isolation and attributable audit events. If a feature is not documented, assume it is not a dependable control until tested.
Bottom line for a safe shared agent
A shared channel should share a conversation, not a person’s authority. Give the agent an identity with a narrow job, constrain every connector and invocation path, authorize each action outside the model, keep raw secrets behind a trusted boundary where feasible, and regularly prove that out-of-scope requests are denied. This design limits what a prompt, user or retrieved document can cause even when the agent behaves unexpectedly.
