How to Stop an AI Agent From Taking an Action or Accessing an App

To stop an AI agent safely, act at the narrowest layer that matches the risk. For an action happening now, use the agent’s Pause, Stop, Cancel or Interrupt control and deny any pending confirmation. To prevent future access, disconnect the connected account in the AI product, then revoke the provider-side authorization or ask your administrator to remove a managed grant. These controls are different: stopping one tool call does not revoke an account, and changing an approval prompt does not disconnect an app.

First decide what you need to stop

“Stop the agent” can mean four different things: cancel one action that is waiting, interrupt a turn that is running, prevent an AI product from using a connected account again, or block an organization-managed identity from authenticating. Use the smallest control that achieves your goal, especially in a business environment where a broad shutdown can interrupt unrelated workflows.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Goal First control Typical scope What it does not do
Cancel a pending tool call Select Deny, Decline or Cancel on the confirmation card One proposed action It does not remove the agent’s account access
Stop a live turn Use Pause, Stop or Interrupt The current session or turn Open workflow runs may continue unless stopped separately
Prevent future use of a connected app Disconnect the connected account in the AI product That account-to-app connection It does not undo completed actions or automatically erase retained data
Remove the provider’s authorization Revoke the grant in the connected service’s security or authorization settings A specific provider grant It may not stop a separate account, token or managed connection
Block an organization-managed agent Disable its identity or enforce an appropriate Conditional Access policy One identity or a broader category of identities Broad policies can affect other agents, users and products

Check every layer involved: the agent interface, the AI product, the external app or provider, and—if your organization manages the agent—the identity system. A browser tab closing or a user signing out is not proof that an authorization grant has been revoked.

If an AI agent is taking an action right now

1. Deny any confirmation that is waiting

If the agent displays a card asking to send a message, edit a record, create a file or perform another tool action, choose Deny, Decline or Cancel. Do not approve the request while trying to stop it. A denial normally applies to that proposed call; it is not the same as disconnecting the app.

2. Interrupt the current turn

Use the product’s visible Pause, Stop or Interrupt control. If no control is visible, look in the session or run details rather than merely closing the browser window. The exact label and placement vary by product surface, plan, region and workspace policy.

3. Stop queued or recurring work

After the turn stops, inspect the agent’s run history, schedules, queues and automations. An interrupted conversation can have a separate workflow run that remains active. Cancel those runs individually and check whether a retry, scheduled job or webhook has already been created.

4. Verify the result

  • Confirm that the run status is Cancelled, Stopped or equivalent.
  • Check the external app for an action that completed just before the interruption.
  • Review audit or activity history for additional calls made by the same session.
  • If the action affected sensitive data, notify the account owner or administrator before changing more settings.

API-driven sessions

For Anthropic’s managed-agent event API, a client can send a user.interrupt event to interrupt the session. The session guidance warns that interrupting a turn does not automatically end open workflow runs, so those runs must be located and stopped separately. Use the current API documentation for the exact event format and authentication requirements for your implementation.

Disconnect an AI product from a connected app

When the immediate action is over and your goal is to prevent future access, remove the connection inside the AI product. For ChatGPT, the documented path is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps or, on surfaces that still use the older label, Plugins.
  3. Choose the connected app.
  4. Open the connected-account or Connection controls.
  5. Select Disconnect and confirm.

Disconnecting stops future access through that account connection. It does not reverse an action that already happened, and it does not automatically delete conversations, uploaded files or memories that the AI product has retained. Handle deletion separately under the product’s data controls and the provider’s own retention policy.

Check for more than one connection

  • Repeat the check for every account connected to the AI product.
  • Look for a personal connection and a work or school connection separately.
  • If the workspace is administrator-managed, the connection may be enabled by a policy that an individual user cannot change.
  • Review other AI products or automation services that may hold their own authorization to the same app.

Availability and menu labels can differ by account type, plan, region and workspace policy. If you cannot see Apps, Plugins or Disconnect, ask the workspace administrator which connection is in force rather than assuming that no access exists.

Revoke the provider-side authorization

An AI product can be disconnected while the external service still lists an authorization grant. Open the connected service’s security, authorized-apps, consent or access-management page and revoke the grant associated with the AI product. The exact menu depends on the provider and account type; there is no universal “revoke” screen.

  1. Identify the exact provider account shown in the AI product’s connection details.
  2. Open that provider account’s authorization or security settings.
  3. Find the AI product, agent, OAuth client or service principal that was granted access.
  4. Revoke the grant, remove the authorized application or invalidate the relevant token, using the provider’s terminology.
  5. Return to the AI product and confirm that the connection is no longer available.

If the grant belongs to a company-managed account, only an administrator may be able to remove it. Ask for the grant to be revoked at the provider layer and record which account, application and time were involved. Revoking one account’s grant does not remove a grant held by another account.

Approval prompts are not access revocation

Many AI products offer a permission choice such as “always ask,” “ask before changes” or “allow automatically.” That setting controls how future actions are presented; it does not necessarily remove access already granted to the connected provider account.

In ChatGPT, changing an app permission can alter whether the product asks before reading or making changes, but OpenAI states that it does not disconnect the app or revoke access already granted to the provider account. To remove access, disconnect the account and use the provider’s authorization controls when necessary.

Setting or action Use it when Result
Deny a confirmation You want to reject one proposed tool call That call is refused; the connection remains
Require confirmation You want a review before later actions Future prompts may require approval; existing access remains
Disconnect the account You want the AI product to stop using that connection Future access through that connection stops
Revoke provider authorization You want the external service to reject the AI product The provider grant is removed or invalidated

For a managed ChatGPT workspace, administrators should inspect app enablement, action controls, permission defaults and provider authorization as separate settings. Disabling “new actions” affects actions introduced later; it does not automatically disable actions that were already enabled.

When an organization manages the agent

Do not apply a tenant-wide block before identifying the actual agent identity and authorization. An enterprise agent may authenticate as a distinct identity, as a user through delegated consent, or as an application running without a user present. The correct response depends on that distinction.

Disable one agent identity

A Microsoft Entra administrator can disable an individual agent identity. This prevents token issuance or authentication for that identity while retaining the identity record for investigation and later review. Microsoft cautions: “Disabling an agent identity in your tenant might have broader consequences than simply stopping new AI agents from being created or used.” Check dependencies, ownership, scheduled jobs and audit activity before enforcing the change.

  1. Locate the identity associated with the agent in the Entra admin center.
  2. Confirm that its sign-in and application activity match the incident.
  3. Disable the identity rather than deleting it when you need to preserve evidence or enable a controlled recovery.
  4. Review failed and successful sign-in events after the change.
  5. Stop any workflow, queue or service that can retry with another credential.

Use Conditional Access for a broader category

Conditional Access can block authentication for a wider class of agent identities or conditions. Microsoft recommends evaluating a policy in report-only mode before enforcement. This exposes which users, agents and applications would be affected so you can narrow exclusions and conditions first.

A broad policy may interrupt multiple production agents and product experiences. Use it when the threat scope justifies that impact, and document the rollback condition before switching from report-only to enforced mode.

Identify the permission model

Grant type How the agent acts What to review
Delegated permissions An interactive agent acts on behalf of a signed-in user The user’s consent, refresh tokens and the delegated grant for that account
Application permissions An autonomous agent acts without a user present The application identity, service principal, app-role assignment and any non-user credentials

Find the actual grant before revoking it. Removing a user’s delegated consent will not necessarily stop an autonomous application permission, and disabling an application identity will not remove a separate user’s consent. Narrow-scope authorization—such as assigning a role limited to one resource—can reduce the effect of a future compromise.

Match the response to urgency and scope

Choose controls in this order when there is active risk: first contain the specific call, then stop the session, then cancel independent runs. Once the immediate activity is contained, remove the connected account and provider grant. In an enterprise incident, disable the single identity before considering a tenant-wide Conditional Access rule. This sequence limits collateral damage while closing each route the agent could use.

Scope matters as much as speed. A denial affects one tool call; an interruption affects one turn; a disconnect affects one account-to-app connection; a provider revocation affects a grant; identity controls can affect every workflow using that identity. Record the scope of each change so another administrator does not assume that one layer covered all the others.

Keep an evidence trail

Before deleting anything, capture the run identifier, timestamps, account name, connected-app name, identity or service principal, requested tool and resulting status. Preserve relevant audit entries and screenshots according to your organization’s incident process. This information helps distinguish an action that never ran from one that completed before cancellation and makes it easier to find a second connection or retrying workflow.

If the agent still acts after you changed a setting

The action was already completed

Stopping an agent cannot undo a completed email, file change, purchase, deletion or other external action. Use the affected app’s own undo, recovery or audit process, and preserve timestamps and run identifiers for the administrator or service owner.

A different account is still connected

Inspect every account listed in the AI product and the provider’s authorization page. Personal, work, delegated and administrator-managed connections can coexist. Disconnect or revoke each one that is in scope.

A workflow is retrying independently

Look for scheduled tasks, queues, webhooks, background runs and integrations that were created before the conversational turn was interrupted. Cancel the workflow and then verify that no new run appears in the activity log.

The workspace policy restored the connection

If a user-level disconnect immediately reappears, the workspace may enforce the app connection. Ask an administrator to change app enablement, action controls or the managed provider authorization. A user permission toggle cannot override a higher-level policy.

You changed only the approval behavior

Return to the connection settings and perform the actual disconnect. Then revoke the provider-side grant if the service still lists one. Approval prompts govern consent for actions; they are not a substitute for removing authorization.

The agent changed credentials or used another identity

Review sign-in and token activity for related service principals, delegated users and automation accounts. An agent that loses one token may still have a separate token, API key or application permission. Disable or revoke only the credential confirmed to be in scope, then test whether the activity has stopped.

A practical shutdown checklist

  • Contain: deny pending calls and use the live Stop, Pause or Interrupt control.
  • Terminate: cancel queued, scheduled and recurring runs separately.
  • Inspect: check the external app’s activity and audit history for actions completed before cancellation.
  • Disconnect: remove each connected account from the AI product.
  • Revoke: remove the provider-side authorization or ask the administrator to do it.
  • Classify: determine whether the agent used delegated user permissions or autonomous application permissions.
  • Escalate carefully: disable the specific managed identity first; use report-only Conditional Access before a broad enforcement policy.
  • Verify: attempt a harmless connection check, review sign-in failures and confirm that no replacement workflow is acting.

How to prevent an unwanted action next time

Keep high-impact actions behind confirmation, grant agents only the resources they need and prefer resource-scoped roles over tenant-wide permissions. Separate interactive credentials from autonomous application credentials so that stopping one does not require disabling every workflow. Maintain an inventory of connected accounts, app grants, agent identities and scheduled runs, including the owner responsible for each.

For production agents, test interruption and recovery procedures before an incident. Record where the stop control lives, how to cancel background runs, which administrator can revoke provider grants and which Conditional Access policy is safe to enforce. Review authorization and audit logs after policy changes; a successful disconnect should be observable as an absence of new access, not inferred solely from a changed button label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does closing the browser stop an AI agent?

Not reliably. Closing a tab may hide the interface while a background run, queue, webhook or scheduled workflow continues. Use the product’s Stop or Interrupt control, cancel separate runs, and verify the status in run history.

Does denying one action remove the agent’s access?

No. Deny or Decline rejects that proposed tool call. The connected account and provider authorization normally remain available until you disconnect or revoke them.

What is the difference between disconnecting and revoking?

Disconnecting removes the account connection inside the AI product and stops future use through that connection. Revoking removes the authorization at the external provider. For sensitive incidents, check and complete both layers.

Will disconnecting delete conversations or uploaded files?

No. Disconnecting prevents future access through that connection but does not automatically erase conversations, files or memories already retained by the AI product. Use separate data-deletion controls and review the provider’s retention rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can an agent still act after I changed it to ‘always ask’?

An approval preference changes how later actions are presented; it does not revoke existing access. Disconnect the account in the AI product and revoke the provider-side grant if it remains listed.

How do I stop a company-managed agent?

Ask an Entra or workspace administrator to identify the agent identity and grant type. They can disable the individual identity, revoke the applicable delegated or application grant, or use Conditional Access for a wider category. Test broad policies in report-only mode first.

What if the same app is connected to several accounts?

Inspect personal, work, school and administrator-managed connections separately. Disconnect or revoke every account that is in scope; removing one account’s grant does not remove another account’s grant.

Can stopping an agent undo an email or file deletion?

No. Cancellation only limits future activity. Use the affected service’s undo, recovery and audit features, and give the owner the run identifier and timestamps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Stop the immediate call, cancel independent runs, disconnect every relevant account, and revoke the provider grant. For managed agents, identify the real identity and permission model before disabling it; use broad Conditional Access only after testing its impact. Verify the external app and audit logs rather than assuming a changed setting ended access.
