How to Stop Amazon Recommendations From Showing Embarrassing or Unwanted Products

On Amazon.com, remove an unwanted product from the signals used for recommendations by opening Improve Your Recommendations and switching off Use this item for recommendations. Then open Your Browsing History and delete viewed products you do not want influencing future suggestions. These controls are separate, and Amazon does not promise an instant or complete reset across every device.

Start with the account-level controls

Use these steps for recommendations shown in the main Amazon store. They apply to the Amazon account whose suggestions you want to change; signing into a different account will not alter the first account’s profile.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Sign in to the relevant Amazon account.
  2. Open Improve Your Recommendations from the account or recommendations area.
  3. Locate the product that should no longer influence suggestions.
  4. Turn off Use this item for recommendations for that product.
  5. Open Your Browsing History and remove viewed products that you do not want retained as recommendation signals.
  6. Return to the recommendation surface later and check the result. Amazon documents the controls but does not state a universal refresh time or guarantee that every recommendation will disappear.

The item exclusion and browsing-history deletion address different inputs. Turning off the item setting does not automatically erase the product from browsing history, and deleting browsing history does not necessarily mark a previously purchased or otherwise known item as excluded. For the strongest account-level cleanup, do both.

What each Amazon control actually changes

Control Scope Effect What it does not promise
Use this item for recommendations in Improve Your Recommendations One product selected in your account Stops that item from being used as a recommendation input through this control It does not guarantee that every similar product, category suggestion or recommendation surface will vanish
Your Browsing History Viewed products recorded on the account Removes selected browsing events you no longer want informing suggestions It is not an order-history deletion and is not a universal reset of all account signals
Interest-based advertising preference Ad personalization, including supported Alexa surfaces Reduces use of interests for ad personalization Ads may still appear, and personalized recommendations can remain
Fire tablet Not Interested One item in the Discover row Dismisses that displayed recommendation on the device It is not a general Amazon-account history deletion
Fire tablet Home Screens setting The recommendations section and Discover row on that tablet Hides the section from the selected device It does not remove recommendations elsewhere or disable all advertising
Alexa activity deletion Voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests selected in Alexa privacy controls Deletes the selected Alexa interaction records Some other interaction records may remain, and personalization or features can be affected

Remove an unwanted product from Amazon store recommendations

Exclude the specific item

Open Improve Your Recommendations, find the embarrassing or unwanted product, and switch off Use this item for recommendations. This is the most direct account-level action when one product is the problem. It tells Amazon not to use that item through the listed recommendation preference; it is not a request to cancel an order, hide a purchase from other account users or delete a receipt.

Clean the separate browsing-history record

Open Your Browsing History and remove the product, or other related products, from the viewed-items list. A recommendation can be influenced by browsing activity even when you have not bought the item, so deleting the view is useful when the unwanted suggestion began after a visit to a product page.

Allow for an uncertain update time

Amazon’s consumer documentation describes these controls but does not publish one update interval for every recommendation placement. A card can therefore remain visible for a while, and related items can continue to appear because they are based on other signals. Do not interpret a delayed change as proof that the toggle failed; check the item setting and browsing history again before repeating the action.

Use sign-out and cookie blocking only as a stronger privacy trade-off

Amazon says browsing without linking history to an account is possible by signing out and blocking cookies. That approach can impair the cart, checkout and sign-in-dependent functions, so it is a broader privacy measure rather than the preferred fix for one embarrassing recommendation. If you use it, expect less continuity between visits and restore cookies when a shopping feature requires them.

Stop or limit suggestions on an Echo Show

Echo Show has several kinds of on-screen content. Sponsored advertisements, interest-based advertising preferences and non-sponsored suggestions are not the same setting.

Sponsored ads cannot be switched off

Amazon’s help page for Echo devices with a screen states: You can’t turn off these ads, but you can skip an ad by swiping from right to the left on the screen. This is a device-level limitation, not a missing toggle in the Alexa app. When an ad appears, swipe from right to left to skip it. Amazon also provides an option to hide a particular ad for 30 days. Hiding one ad is temporary and does not disable the sponsored-ad program.

Turn off interest-based ad personalization when that is the concern

Use the relevant preference in Manage Your Alexa Data to turn off interest-based ads. This changes how ads are personalized; it does not necessarily remove ads, turn off every recommendation or make the Echo Show screen free of suggested content. Amazon can still show non-personalized advertising or other suggestions after the preference changes.

Handle non-sponsored suggestions separately

Echo Show can display items such as Amazon Recommendations, Your Frequent Orders and Explore Local Places. These are suggestions on the home screen, not the sponsored ads covered above. Amazon points users to home-screen customization controls for this type of content. Look for the current home-screen or content customization labels on the device because menu names can vary by software version and marketplace.

Change recommendations on a Fire tablet

Dismiss one Discover-row item

On the Fire tablet, long-press the unwanted item in the Discover row and choose Not Interested. This is the quickest way to remove a particular card from that device’s visible row. It is a display-level dismissal, not a promise that the same product cannot be suggested in another Amazon surface.

Hide the recommendations section

To remove the recommendations area from the tablet’s home screen, use this path:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps and Notifications.
  3. Open Amazon App Settings.
  4. Choose Home Screens.
  5. Turn off Recommendations and Continue and Discover Row.

This hides the section on that Fire tablet. It does not alter the Amazon account’s browsing history or remove recommendations on an Echo Show, another tablet or the Amazon website.

Filter mature or adult lock-screen ad content

For lock-screen ad content aimed at mature or adult audiences, go to Settings → Apps and Notifications → Amazon App Settings → Special Offers → Content Filtering. This filter has a narrow purpose: Amazon says parental controls do not remove mature or adult content from store search results or some content categories. Do not treat Content Filtering as a universal ad blocker or a complete content filter.

Review Alexa activity when voice shopping is involved

If an unwanted recommendation followed a spoken request, review Alexa privacy controls in addition to the store settings. You can review and delete selected voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests. This is useful when the concern is not only what appears on a screen, but also the Alexa activity that may have revealed an interest.

Amazon’s Alexa FAQ warns: Deleting voice recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests may limit our ability to personalize your experience and make improvements based on your interactions with Alexa and cause certain features to stop working. Deletion can therefore reduce personalization or affect features. It also is not necessarily a complete erasure of every interaction record; Amazon notes that some other records may remain. Treat Alexa-history deletion as a targeted privacy action, not as a guaranteed reset of all recommendation data.

Choose the fix by where the unwanted content appears

Where you see it First action If that is not enough Trade-off or limit
Amazon.com product recommendations Improve Your Recommendations → turn off Use this item for recommendations Remove the related views from Your Browsing History Amazon does not promise an immediate, total reset across all surfaces
Amazon.com suggestions caused by recent viewing Delete the product from Your Browsing History Also exclude the item in Improve Your Recommendations Other signals can still produce similar suggestions
Echo Show sponsored ad Swipe right to left to skip it Hide that individual ad for 30 days Sponsored ads cannot be turned off according to Amazon’s current help page
Echo Show interest-based ad targeting Change the relevant setting in Manage Your Alexa Data Review Alexa activity if a voice request is involved Ads and recommendations may still appear
Echo Show non-sponsored home-screen suggestions Use home-screen customization controls Adjust the underlying Amazon account or device settings that apply Labels and available controls can vary by device software
Fire tablet Discover row Long-press the item and choose Not Interested Hide the section through Home Screens settings The dismissal is device-focused; it is not account-history deletion
Fire tablet lock-screen mature/adult content Enable Content Filtering under Special Offers Use separate account and device privacy controls Search results and some content categories are outside this filter
Alexa voice-shopping activity Review or delete selected recordings, transcripts or typed requests Recheck store recommendations separately Personalization or features may be limited, and some records may remain

Why an unwanted recommendation can remain

  • Different surfaces use different controls. A store item exclusion does not control Echo Show sponsored ads, and an Echo Show ad preference does not edit the Amazon store’s browsing history.
  • The view and the recommendation preference are separate. Removing a product from one list does not automatically change the other.
  • Amazon has not published one universal refresh time. A recommendation card can persist temporarily after a change.
  • Related products are not the same item. Excluding one product does not guarantee that products in the same category or with similar attributes will disappear.
  • Device settings can be local. Hiding a Fire tablet section changes that tablet’s home screen, not every device signed into the account.
  • Advertising and recommendations are different systems. Turning off interest-based ads affects ad personalization, not necessarily product suggestions or all ads.

Troubleshoot in a safe order

The product still appears in Amazon store recommendations

  1. Confirm that you are signed into the account showing the recommendation.
  2. Open Improve Your Recommendations and verify that Use this item for recommendations is off for the exact product.
  3. Open Your Browsing History and remove the product and any closely related views you no longer want retained.
  4. Allow time for the recommendation surface to refresh, then check again.
  5. If a similar item remains, treat it as a separate recommendation rather than assuming the first exclusion failed.

An Echo Show ad remains after changing privacy preferences

  1. Identify whether it is a sponsored ad, an interest-based ad preference issue or a non-sponsored home-screen suggestion.
  2. For a sponsored ad, swipe right to left or hide that ad for 30 days; there is no documented switch to remove all sponsored ads.
  3. For interest-based targeting, review Manage Your Alexa Data, understanding that ads may still appear.
  4. For non-sponsored suggestions, use the Echo Show’s home-screen customization controls.

A Fire tablet still shows unwanted content

  1. Long-press the Discover-row card and select Not Interested.
  2. If the whole section is unwanted, turn off Recommendations and Continue and Discover Row under Settings → Apps and Notifications → Amazon App Settings → Home Screens.
  3. If the issue is mature or adult lock-screen advertising, use Special Offers → Content Filtering and remember its limits for search results and some content categories.

A voice request appears to have influenced suggestions

  1. Review Alexa Privacy controls for the relevant recording, transcript or typed request.
  2. Delete only the records you intend to remove, because Amazon warns that deletion can limit personalization or stop certain features.
  3. Use Improve Your Recommendations and Your Browsing History separately for store recommendations.

Privacy and convenience trade-offs

There is no single master switch that simultaneously deletes Amazon browsing data, removes every recommendation, disables Echo Show sponsored advertising and preserves every personalized feature. Narrow controls preserve more convenience: excluding one item leaves other useful suggestions intact, and dismissing one Fire tablet card avoids hiding the entire section. Broader controls reduce more personalization but can make shopping, Alexa and device features less convenient.

  • Want one embarrassing product gone? Exclude that item, then remove its browsing-history entry.
  • Want fewer suggestions on a Fire tablet? Hide the recommendations section rather than changing the entire account.
  • Want less ad personalization? Change the interest-based ad preference, while accepting that ads may remain.
  • Want to remove voice-shopping traces? Review Alexa activity, with the documented risk to personalization and some features.
  • Want unlinked browsing? Sign out and block cookies only if the resulting cart, checkout and sign-in limitations are acceptable.

Labels and availability can differ

The paths above use Amazon.com and the device labels documented for the relevant Amazon help pages. Amazon can present different wording, menu placement or availability by marketplace, device generation and software version. If a label is not identical, look for the equivalent current setting rather than assuming that an unrelated ad or privacy control has the same effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you should expect after making the changes

The account-level item exclusion and browsing-history edit are the appropriate first response for unwanted Amazon store recommendations. Echo Show sponsored ads require skipping or temporarily hiding individual ads, while Fire tablets offer both item dismissal and a device-level way to hide the recommendations section. Alexa-history deletion addresses voice activity but can affect personalization and is not guaranteed to remove every related record. Keeping those scopes separate prevents the most common mistake: changing one surface and expecting every Amazon device and recommendation system to change with it.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
