Turn voice purchasing off to block Amazon purchases by voice, or enable a spoken confirmation code if you want to keep voice shopping but require an extra check before an order is placed. Amazon documents this path in its U.S. Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs.
That setting does not necessarily control a restaurant reservation, ride, delivery, or another transaction processed by a third-party skill. For those actions, review the skill’s linked account and the provider’s own payment or booking controls. Amazon says some developer-handled purchases use payment details supplied directly to the developer and may not follow Alexa’s general voice-purchasing setting.

First, identify what Alexa is about to do
“Alexa made a purchase” can describe several different transaction paths. An Amazon retail order, a paid feature inside a skill, a restaurant reservation, a ride request, and a food or service order may not use the same approval mechanism. Before changing settings, identify which account appears on the receipt or confirmation message.
- Amazon voice order: an item bought from Amazon through Alexa’s shopping flow. The Voice Purchasing page is the relevant control.
- Kid-skill purchase: paid content or an in-skill purchase offered by a skill designed for children. Kid-skill controls and adult-approval behavior are separate from ordinary household voice shopping.
- Provider-managed transaction: a booking or purchase completed by a skill developer or an outside provider. The provider may hold the payment method and may require settings in its own account.
If you are unsure, check the order, booking, or receipt first. Amazon-related Alexa order details can be reviewed in the Alexa app and through Amazon’s Alexa privacy or order-history pages. A provider-managed transaction should also be checked in the provider account named in the confirmation.

Turn off Amazon voice purchasing completely
Use this option when you do not want Alexa to place Amazon orders by voice at all. It does not require an Echo replacement, accessory, subscription, or other hardware purchase; the change is an account setting.
- Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet.
- Select More.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Account Settings.
- Select Voice Purchasing.
- Turn voice purchasing off.
Amazon’s U.S. help page uses those labels. App releases, account types, and marketplaces can alter the wording or position of a menu. If the exact sequence differs, use the Alexa app’s settings search or look for the current Voice Purchasing entry under account settings rather than assuming a device-level setting is required.
After switching it off, test the account with a harmless request such as asking Alexa to add an item to a shopping list, not to buy it. A shopping-list action is different from an order and does not prove that a third-party skill’s checkout is blocked. Do not place a test order merely to verify the control.

Require a spoken confirmation code instead of disabling shopping
If you still want to order Amazon items by voice, enable the confirmation-code option in the same Voice Purchasing section. Alexa then asks for a speakable code when the account holder places an Amazon voice order. Amazon’s Terms of Use describe the two controls this way: “For purchases by voice, you can require a speakable confirmation code and turn off all voice purchasing through the voice purchasing settings.” See the full Alexa Terms of Use.

- Open the Alexa app and choose More > Settings > Account Settings > Voice Purchasing.
- Turn on the confirmation-code requirement.
- Follow the prompts to create or confirm the code shown by the app.
- Keep the code private. Do not say it aloud when visitors, children, recordings, or an untrusted device could hear it.
A code adds a confirmation step; it is not the same as turning voice purchasing off. It is also not a universal approval mechanism for every skill. Amazon’s consumer setting is documented for Amazon voice purchases, while some developer-run transactions can use a payment method supplied directly to the developer.
Protect purchases made through child and kid skills
Children can reach paid content through skills even when ordinary Amazon voice shopping is configured carefully. Amazon says voice purchasing is turned off for Amazon Kids on Alexa. Kid skills also have their own purchasing and per-purchase approval controls, so inspect those settings if a child can use a standard household Alexa account or a paid skill.
Check the child-skill controls
- Open the Alexa app and go to the account or child-profile settings that govern the relevant kid skill.
- Look for the skill’s purchasing option and decide whether purchases should be disabled entirely.
- If purchases must remain available, enable the option that requires adult approval for each purchase when it is offered.
- Review which child profile, household account, or device can invoke the skill; a setting on one profile may not describe another profile’s behavior.
Amazon’s developer documentation describes the default kid-skill flow as requiring approval and says an unanswered purchase request expires after 24 hours. That interval is part of the skill purchase flow, not a guarantee that every child-facing skill uses identical prompts or timing. The live controls shown in your Alexa app take precedence over an older screenshot or a different marketplace’s instructions. Understand why bookings may bypass the Alexa switch
A reservation or service request is not automatically an Amazon retail order. A skill can collect your contact details, call a provider’s booking system, or charge a payment method held by the developer or provider. Amazon’s Alexa FAQ gives restaurant booking as an example of a skill that may need customer information, and Amazon says some skill purchases use payment details supplied directly to the developer. Those transactions may not be affected when you turn off Alexa’s general voice purchasing setting.

Restaurant reservations and rides
Amazon’s Amazon Predefined Task Reference lists OpenTable for restaurant-reservation tasks and Uber for ride-booking tasks. These are examples of supported integrations, not evidence of a single consumer switch that forces approval for every reservation or ride. Availability can vary by country, account, skill version, and provider.
- In the Alexa app, identify the skill that handled the booking by checking enabled skills, activity, or the confirmation message.
- Open the skill’s account-linking page and note which provider account is connected.
- Sign in to that provider directly and inspect saved payment methods, booking permissions, one-tap or express checkout settings, and account security options.
- Cancel or modify an unwanted reservation in the provider’s system when possible; Alexa may not own the booking record.
- Keep the provider’s confirmation number and review the provider’s cancellation deadline before requesting a refund or cancellation.
Do not assume that entering a code in Alexa will be requested by the booking provider. The provider may have a separate PIN, approval, or account-authentication process, or none at all.
Physical services and developer-run purchases
Amazon’s requirements for skills that allow purchases say the skill must confirm the seller, the items or service, delivery details, and the total by voice. The same documentation requires certain account-linked transactions of $100 or more to offer a four-digit voice-code option. These are requirements imposed on qualifying skills; they do not promise that your general Alexa confirmation-code setting governs every provider payment. Read the applicable Requirements for Skills that Allow Purchases when you need to understand a skill’s disclosure and confirmation obligations.
Choose the control that matches your risk

Review what happened after an unexpected transaction
Changing a setting prevents future activity; it does not automatically reverse an order or booking that already exists. First establish which system created the transaction.

For an Amazon order
- Open the Alexa app and review Alexa-related order details and activity.
- Check the Amazon order history for the account connected to Alexa.
- Record the order number, item, amount, delivery address, and time.
- Use Amazon’s normal cancellation, return, or customer-service process for that order.
- After resolving it, confirm that voice purchasing is still off or that the confirmation-code setting remains enabled.
For a booking or provider charge
- Find the provider name, booking reference, and payment account in the confirmation email, text, or provider app.
- Use the provider’s cancellation or dispute process, paying attention to its stated deadline.
- Change the provider password if another person or an unknown device may have accessed the account.
- Remove an unnecessary saved payment method and review recent activity on the provider account.
- Keep copies of confirmations and support messages until the charge or booking is settled.
Do not treat the absence of an Amazon order as proof that nothing was booked. A third-party provider can keep its own record even when Alexa’s Amazon order history is empty.

The Voice Purchasing menu is missing
- Confirm that you are signed into the Alexa app with the account that owns the devices and orders.
- Open More > Settings > Account Settings and look for the current Voice Purchasing label; Amazon can move labels between app releases.
- Check the marketplace and country associated with the account. The documented path is from Amazon’s U.S. FAQ, and menu names or feature availability can differ elsewhere.
- Update the Alexa app, then sign out and back in if the account settings do not load correctly.
An Amazon order was still placed
- Reopen Voice Purchasing and verify that the switch is off, rather than relying on memory of an earlier change.
- If you chose a code, verify that the code requirement is enabled and that the correct household account is being used.
- Check whether the transaction was actually created by a skill provider; an outside charge will not necessarily appear as an Amazon voice order.
- Review all household profiles and devices that can access the account. A setting changed on one account does not change a different account linked to another device.
A booking still went through
Alexa’s general voice-purchasing setting is not documented as a universal booking block. Identify the skill and provider, then use that provider’s account, payment, and booking controls. If the skill has no approval option, the practical preventive measure is to unlink the provider account, disable the skill, or remove its saved payment method, provided the provider offers those controls.
A child can still request paid content
Inspect the specific kid skill’s purchase and adult-approval settings and verify which profile is active. Amazon’s child-skill documentation describes approval behavior and a 24-hour expiration for an unanswered request, but the app’s current controls determine what your account can actually change.
Use a layered setup for shared homes
A shared household creates more exposure than a single-user phone. Apply the controls in layers rather than relying on voice recognition or a single spoken phrase.
- Turn off Amazon voice purchasing if no one needs to order by voice.
- If voice shopping is necessary, require a confirmation code and keep it known only to authorized adults.
- Disable paid purchases in kid skills, or require adult approval for each purchase where the skill provides that choice.
- Review every enabled skill that can reserve, order, deliver, or charge for a service.
- Check linked provider accounts and remove saved payment methods that are not needed.
- Review Alexa and provider activity after guests, children, or temporary caregivers have used the devices.
These steps address different transaction paths. Turning off Amazon voice purchasing cannot replace provider-side controls, and changing a provider password cannot disable Amazon retail voice orders.
Regional and version qualifications
The step-by-step path in this guide comes from Amazon’s U.S. Alexa FAQ. Amazon’s terms and developer documentation corroborate the confirmation-code concept, skill-purchase requirements, kid-skill behavior, and listed booking integrations, but supported skills and labels can change. Your country, marketplace, account type, app release, and provider may therefore show different options.
When the labels differ, search the current Alexa app for Voice Purchasing, then verify the result by reading the setting’s description. For a booking, follow the provider named in the confirmation rather than assuming an Amazon retail setting applies. Amazon’s separate What Is Alexa Voice ID? help page is not the documented location for disabling voice purchasing; the account setting remains the relevant place to control Amazon voice orders.

No physical product is required to stop Alexa purchases or bookings. Amazon’s official instructions use the Alexa app and account, skill, and provider settings. Buying another Alexa device, an accessory, a replacement part, or a printed manual does not solve a provider-side payment exception. If a service does not offer an approval control, the effective options are to disable or unlink that skill, change the provider account, remove its payment method, or stop using the booking integration.
