To stop AirPods from automatically switching to another iPhone, iPad, or Mac, connect them to the device you want to keep using and change Connect to This [device] to When Last Connected to This [device]. This adjusts Apple’s automatic-switching preference; it does not block a separately paired Android phone or remove the AirPods from an Apple Account.
Stop AirPods from switching between Apple devices
Supported AirPods can switch automatically among Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. For example, audio may move from a Mac to an iPhone when playback starts on the iPhone. Calls can also route to AirPods. Apple lists AirPods 2, 3, and 4 (both models), all AirPods Pro models, and all AirPods Max models as supporting automatic switching. Devices should be updated and signed in to the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication. See Apple’s automatic-switching instructions for model and device details.

On iPhone or iPad: Open Settings, tap the AirPods name, then tap Connect to This iPhone or Connect to This iPad. If the AirPods name is not shown, open Settings → Bluetooth, then tap the More Info button next to the AirPods.

On Mac: Open System Settings → Bluetooth, click the Options button next to the AirPods, and set Connect to This Mac to When Last Connected to This Mac.

The exact menu wording can vary by device and software version. The setting makes AirPods prefer the device they were last connected to; you can still choose them manually from playback controls or Bluetooth menus. To restore automatic switching, select Automatically in the iPhone or iPad setting, or the corresponding automatic option on Mac. Apple’s device-specific steps cover the available controls.

Apple-device automatic switching is different from ordinary Bluetooth pairing. AirPods can be paired as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple phone. Changing When Last Connected on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac does not unpair or block a separately paired Android phone. To pair AirPods with a non-Apple device, put them into pairing mode using the instructions for that AirPods generation, then select them in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Apple’s non-Apple pairing guide provides model-specific directions.

If the unwanted phone is another Apple device on the same Apple Account, use the connection preference above on the device you want to retain. If it is a separately paired phone, the Apple guidance linked here does not describe a general setting that blocks that phone from reconnecting. The right next step depends on the phone’s platform, who paired it, and whether the AirPods are associated with another person’s Apple Account.
If audio switches to a car or speaker
If the sound moves to a car stereo or speaker when your iPhone or iPad connects to it, that may be playback routing rather than AirPods switching between Apple devices. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity → Keep Audio with Headphones. Apple documents this setting for keeping audio in headphones when connecting to playback devices such as cars or speakers in its AirPods guide.

When to forget or reset AirPods
Forget This Device and resetting are stronger actions than changing the switching preference. Apple says forgetting AirPods removes them from devices where you are signed in to the same Apple Account. Resetting is troubleshooting for AirPods that are not working correctly; Apple recommends considering restart or unpairing first, and reset steps vary by generation.
