Open your phone’s battery-usage screen, inspect the app’s background activity, then change one control at a time: restrict background use if it is excessive, narrow the app’s location permission, and test Battery Saver when you can accept less-timely refreshes or alerts. Menu names differ by manufacturer and Android version, so Pixel instructions are examples rather than universal paths.
These controls reduce unnecessary work without assuming that every weather app or every battery drain has the same cause. After each change, check whether weather updates, widgets and severe-weather notifications still arrive when you need them.

1. Check whether the weather app is the outlier
Do not begin by disabling several permissions at once. A battery graph can show whether the weather app is consuming unusual power, whether it is mostly active while open, or whether background work is continuing after you leave it. That distinction determines which setting is worth changing.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage.
- Choose the app view (Google labels it View by apps on supported Pixel versions).
- Find and open the weather app.
- Review its battery share and the Allow background usage control.
Google notes that some steps apply only to particular Android versions. A high percentage is a reason to investigate, not proof that the app is defective: a weather app that you leave open for hours can legitimately appear high in the list.

Other Android phones
Manufacturers place the same information under different labels, such as Battery usage, App battery management, Background activity or Battery optimization. In Settings, search for battery usage and open the result that lists usage by app. If the phone has no matching screen, use the manufacturer’s support instructions for that model. Do not assume that a Pixel label or switch exists on another handset.
Read the evidence before acting
- If the weather app is low in the list, changing its permissions is unlikely to solve the main problem. Investigate the apps or system services that actually dominate the graph.
- If foreground use is high but background use is small, the drain may simply reflect long sessions, animated radar maps or frequent manual refreshes. Restricting background work will not change power consumed while you are actively viewing the app.
- If background use is substantial while you rarely open the app, continue to the per-app background setting and location review below.
Android does not provide a single weather-app battery percentage that applies to every device. Screen brightness, mobile signal, update interval, widgets, alerts and the phone’s battery health all change the result.
2. Restrict background activity when it is genuinely excessive
Use the per-app control first
On a Pixel, open the weather app from Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps, then review Allow background usage. If the app is consuming a large amount of power and you do not need continuous refreshes, choose the most restrictive option your phone offers. Google’s Pixel guidance recommends leaving apps on Optimized rather than overriding optimization indiscriminately; treat that recommendation as Pixel-specific because other manufacturers expose different policies.
On another phone, look for an equivalent per-app setting on the app’s battery page. Possible choices include optimized, unrestricted, restricted or a manufacturer-specific “sleep” mode. Select the least permissive setting that still supports the features you use, and record what you changed so you can reverse it if necessary.
Understand what restriction changes
Background limits reduce work while the app is not on screen. They can also postpone a refresh, widget update, data fetch or notification. Google warns that Battery Saver and related restrictions may delay network connections, features and apps; a weather alert can therefore arrive later than it would under unrestricted operation. The delay is a trade-off, not evidence that the setting failed.

- Keep optimization when you want ordinary automatic behavior and have not proved that the app is a major user.
- Restrict background use when the battery screen shows persistent, disproportionate activity and delayed refreshes are acceptable.
- Re-enable ordinary or optimized behavior if alerts, widgets or automatic updates become unreliable.
Change one setting at a time
After changing background use, use the phone normally through a representative period rather than judging from a single minute. Check the battery page again and verify the weather app’s refresh and notifications. Changing background use, location and Battery Saver simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which control helped or caused a missed update.
3. Review the weather app’s location permission
Location can be useful for automatically selecting local forecasts, but permission alone does not prove that location is causing the drain. First inspect the app’s permission in Android’s app-settings screen. The exact path and choices vary by Android release and manufacturer; open the weather app’s Permissions page from Settings and read the available location options.

Choose the narrowest scope that matches your use
Use the least access that preserves the feature you actually want. Depending on the phone and app, Android may offer choices such as denying location, allowing it only while the app is in use, or allowing broader access. An app that only needs your position when you open it generally does not need continuous background access. Google Play’s developer guidance says apps should request the minimum location scope needed and prefer foreground access when possible; that principle does not establish what a particular weather app is doing on your phone.
- Fixed town or city: If you always want the forecast for one place, look inside the weather app for a manually selected location. Use this only if the app provides the option; do not assume every app supports it.
- Automatic local weather: Keep the narrowest location permission that still updates your chosen location, then observe whether battery use changes.
- No location-based features: Deny location or use a manual location if the app continues to provide the forecasts and alerts you need.
Why background location can matter
Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later limit background apps to location updates only a few times each hour. That is a platform rule, not a measured frequency for every weather app. Android Developers also warns: “If your app retrieves near-real time location updates over a long period of time, the device’s battery life becomes significantly shorter.” The warning describes sustained near-real-time tracking in general; it does not show that your weather app is doing so.
Because the platform already rate-limits background location, disabling location is not automatically the correct fix. Use the battery screen and the app’s behavior to decide. If the app’s battery use falls after narrowing location and its forecasts remain correct, the permission change was useful. If nothing changes, restore the permission needed for your preferred features and investigate background processing instead.

4. Test Battery Saver as a temporary or broad measure
Battery Saver applies a wider set of limits than a single weather-app setting. Open your phone’s Battery settings, find Battery Saver (the label may differ), and enable it for a test period or when the battery is low. Some phones allow a schedule or an automatic threshold; use those only if the resulting behavior suits you.

Check the weather-specific trade-off
Google says Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity and can delay visual effects, features, network connections and apps. During the test, check three things:
- Open the weather app and confirm that a manual refresh works.
- Leave it closed long enough for an ordinary update or widget refresh, then see whether it arrives.
- If you rely on severe-weather notifications, verify that alerts still arrive promptly enough for your safety needs.
There is no official weather-app savings percentage that can be applied to all Android phones. Battery Saver’s benefit depends on the device, radio conditions, screen use and the app’s implementation. Treat it as a broad, reversible measure rather than a guaranteed cure.
When Battery Saver is the wrong permanent setting
If timely alerts are essential, a permanent broad restriction may create more risk than benefit. Prefer ordinary optimization and targeted per-app changes, and use Battery Saver for travel, low-battery situations or periods when delayed updates are acceptable.
5. Update Android, update the app and restart
When the drain continues after a targeted change, follow Google’s general troubleshooting sequence:

- Install available Android system updates from the phone’s system-update screen.
- Update the weather app through the device’s app store.
- Restart the phone.
- Return to the battery-usage page and compare the weather app’s background activity with the earlier reading.
Updates can correct battery-management bugs or compatibility problems, but no update guarantees a particular reduction. Keep the app’s ordinary optimized setting unless your battery evidence justifies a restriction.

The app remains high after background restriction
Check whether the high figure is foreground use, a widget, a notification service or location-related activity. Remove an unnecessary widget temporarily and observe the battery page again, but do not infer causation from one short reading. If the app is still a clear outlier while closed, keep the restriction if its delayed updates are acceptable, update both app and Android, and contact the device maker if the phone’s controls do not behave as documented.
Weather updates or alerts arrive late
Undo the most recent restriction first. Restore optimized or ordinary background use, then test again before changing location. If Battery Saver is enabled, turn it off during the test. Delayed network work is an expected consequence of some battery-saving modes, so a late refresh does not necessarily indicate a broken app.
Automatic location stops working
Restore the narrowest location permission that supports automatic local weather, or select a fixed location in the app if that feature exists. A foreground-only permission can be appropriate when you are willing to open the app for a fresh location. Do not grant continuous access merely because the app displays a map; check what the app’s permission screen and documentation require.
The phone has no recognizable Pixel-style switch
Search Settings for battery usage, open the weather app’s battery-management page and consult the manufacturer’s support instructions. Google explicitly notes that device settings differ by manufacturer. Avoid forcing a Pixel procedure onto a different Android skin, and do not force-stop or uninstall system components as a first-line battery fix.
The battery is still draining with the app restricted
Recheck the complete battery list rather than assuming the weather app remains responsible. Mobile signal, screen time, navigation, syncing and another app may be the larger users. If the phone exhibits unusual drain, heat or shutdowns after Android and app updates and a restart, use the device maker’s support channel for model-specific diagnosis.
7. Pick the least disruptive control

8. A safe monitoring routine
Take a baseline screenshot or note of the battery-usage list before making changes. Apply one adjustment, use the phone under normal conditions, and check the same screen again. Record whether the weather app was open, whether a widget was present, whether location was enabled and whether Battery Saver was active. This simple comparison is more reliable than judging the battery icon immediately after a setting change.
Keep the setting only if the measured background use improves and the weather functions you care about remain timely. If the result is worse, reverse that setting and test the next least-disruptive option. Persistent device-specific problems belong with the phone manufacturer after Android and app updates and a restart.
What to expect
The practical goal is not to make every weather app use zero power. It is to match background work and location access to the service you actually need. Diagnose first, use per-app controls before broad restrictions, and treat delayed refreshes or alerts as the cost of stronger battery limits. Android’s few-times-per-hour background-location limit on Android 8.0 and later is a platform behavior, not a promise about any particular app’s battery use. No authoritative source establishes a universal percentage of battery saved by these steps, so judge the result on your own phone’s battery screen.
