Cleaning the lint trap removes only one possible source of odor. A musty-smelling washer usually still has moisture and residue in the door-gasket folds, detergent drawer, drum, or drain hose. Clean those areas, run the washer’s approved tub-clean cycle with a compatible washer cleaner, use the correct HE detergent amount, and dry the machine after every load by leaving the door or lid and dispenser drawer open when permitted.
If the smell returns immediately, the washer leaks, visible mold remains, or the drain hose installation is questionable, stop using improvised chemical treatments and arrange manufacturer support or a qualified appliance inspection.

Why a clean lint trap does not remove a musty smell
The lint trap catches fibers and objects in a specific part of the washing system. It does not scrub the rubber door seal, detergent dispenser, outer tub, drain path, or hidden spaces where water and detergent film can remain. Those damp, residue-coated areas can support odor-causing microbes.

LG explains that closing the door and detergent drawer between washes can trap moisture and detergent residue, creating conditions for odor-causing microbes. Whirlpool gives similar ventilation advice. A musty odor is therefore usually a moisture-management problem, not proof that the lint filter itself was cleaned incorrectly.
Find the odor source before you run another cycle
Unplug the washer if you will reach into moving parts, remove a panel, or inspect the drain connection. Wear gloves when handling stagnant water, mold-like growth, or decomposing debris. Use a flashlight and inspect each location below.

Front-load door gasket
Pull back each section of the rubber gasket, not just the lower edge. Remove trapped lint, hair, coins, socks, and pooled water. Wipe away residue with the method allowed by the owner manual. Whirlpool notes that detergent and fabric-softener residue can build up in this seal and produce unpleasant smells.
Do not assume the visible lip is the entire seal. Work around the full circumference and check the drain holes at the bottom for blockage. If the rubber is torn, permanently discolored with embedded growth, or unable to drain, replacement may be safer than repeated wiping.

Detergent and softener dispenser
Pull the drawer out as far as the manual permits and remove it. Clean each compartment and any removable siphon or insert. Wipe the housing cavity, where dried detergent can remain out of sight, then dry the parts before reinstalling them.
Never force a drawer that has a release tab or locking mechanism. The exact removal method differs by model, and forcing it can damage the dispenser rails or siphon.
Drum and outer tub
A clean-looking stainless drum does not prove that the outer tub is clean. Residue can remain behind the basket, especially after repeated low-temperature or short cycles. Use the washer’s own Clean Washer, Tub Clean, BasketClean, or equivalent program exactly as described in the manual.

Inspect the hose where it enters the standpipe or drain. GE Appliances warns that pushing the hose too far down can siphon drained water back into the washer and cause a musty odor. Recheck the installation against the washer’s manual rather than guessing at a universal insertion depth. Do not alter the plumbing if you are unsure; a service professional can verify the standpipe, trap, and hose routing.

How to deep-clean the washer safely
- Empty the washer. Remove all clothes, lint, and loose objects. A cleaning cycle should run with no laundry unless the manual specifically says otherwise.
- Clean the gasket or lid area. Wipe every fold of a front-loader seal and remove standing water and debris. For a top-loader, clean the underside of the lid, rim, and any detergent or softener residue that the manual identifies as user-cleanable.
- Wash the dispenser. Remove the drawer and inserts according to the manual, rinse away residue, clean the housing, and let the components dry before replacing them.
- Choose a compatible washer cleaner. The owner manual takes priority over a generic recipe. Check that the product is intended for your washer type and for the Clean Washer or Tub Clean cycle. Commercial cleaners are sold as tablets, powders, and liquids; follow the product’s stated dose and placement.
- Run the approved cleaning program. Select the machine’s Clean Washer, Tub Clean, BasketClean, or equivalent setting. GE recommends a commercial washer-cleaning product, including Tide Washing Machine Cleaner on applicable models without BasketClean. LG recommends an oxygen-based drum cleaner used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Complete any required rinse. Some manuals call for an additional rinse or wiping the seal after the cycle. Follow that model-specific instruction instead of adding an unlisted chemical.
- Dry the interior. Wipe pooled water from the gasket and leave the front-load door or top-load lid open. Leave the dispenser drawer open where the manual permits so air can reach the housing.
Choose a washer cleaner without damaging the machine
The best cleaner is the one explicitly compatible with your washer and its cleaning cycle. Compare the following before buying:

Do not combine bleach, vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners. Whirlpool cautions that vinegar can damage washer components over time and does not recommend it as a washer-cleaning product. A chemical reaction can also create dangerous fumes, so use one approved product at a time and ventilate the room.
Fix detergent practices that recreate the smell
Use HE detergent in an HE washer
Whirlpool Product Help says non-HE detergent can leave a film that causes odor. Use the detergent type specified for the machine and measure the amount directed by both the detergent and appliance manuals.
Do not assume more detergent means cleaner clothes
LG identifies excessive detergent or fabric softener as an odor cause. Too much product can remain in the gasket, dispenser, and tub, where it mixes with moisture. If you have been filling the cap to the top, stop and check the marked dose and the washer’s manual rather than continuing by habit.

Account for load size and water conditions
Use the appliance’s stated dosing guidance for the load and detergent concentration. Do not generalize a dosage from another model: dispensing systems, cycle volumes, and manufacturer instructions vary.
Make drying part of every wash
Remove wet laundry promptly after the cycle ends. Leaving a load in a closed drum supplies hours of moisture and can transfer odor to the fabric.
- Leave a front-load door ajar between cycles.
- Leave a top-load lid open between cycles.
- Keep the detergent drawer open when the manual allows it.
- Wipe visible water from the gasket after the final load of the day.
- Keep the room ventilated so evaporated moisture can leave the area.
Do not prop a door open if children or pets can access the washer, or if the manufacturer warns against a particular position. In that situation, follow the manual’s ventilation method and supervise access.

It returns after one or two loads
Repeat the inspection rather than immediately adding stronger chemicals. Check the gasket folds, dispenser housing, and drain hose again, then confirm that the correct detergent type and amount are being used. A small object or pocket of standing water can reintroduce odor even after a successful tub-clean cycle.

It returns immediately after cleaning
An immediate return suggests that water is not draining or that residue is trapped beyond the user-accessible surfaces. Recheck the drain installation against the manual. If the hose is correctly positioned but water remains, arrange manufacturer support or appliance service.
You see mold-like growth
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states, “A moldy odor suggests that mold is growing in the building and should be investigated.” Its basic control principle is to reduce moisture, clean hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry them completely. Do not disturb extensive visible growth or use a chemical mixture without clear manufacturer approval. Ask a qualified professional when the affected area, material, or safe cleaning method is uncertain.
The washer leaks or has damaged parts
Stop the cycle and disconnect power if it is safe to do so. A leaking gasket, cracked hose, failed pump, or damaged dispenser can keep introducing moisture and should be diagnosed before further cleaning cycles. Do not continue operating a machine that presents an electrical or flooding risk.

After each load, remove laundry, ventilate the washer, and wipe accessible standing water. Use only the specified HE detergent and amount. Keep the dispenser free of buildup and inspect the gasket whenever you notice residue, trapped objects, or water that does not drain.
Run the washer’s approved cleaning cycle at the interval stated in the owner manual, using the cleaner and dosage it permits. If your manual does not specify a product, choose a commercial washer cleaner whose label clearly supports your washer type and cycle. Keep records of recurring odor, leaks, and drain issues; that information helps a technician distinguish residue from a plumbing or component fault.
When professional help is the right next step
- Visible mold persists after safe, manual-approved cleaning.
- The odor returns immediately despite correct detergent use, ventilation, and a completed tub-clean cycle.
- The machine leaks, fails to drain, or leaves standing water.
- The drain hose or standpipe installation cannot be verified.
- The gasket, hose, pump, or dispenser is torn, cracked, or permanently deformed.
- You are unsure whether a cleaner is chemically compatible with the washer.
In these situations, contact the washer manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician. Continued operation can spread odor to clothing, worsen water damage, or expose you to unsafe chemical and electrical conditions.
