If your voice companion sends a thought to OpenAI while the speaker is still pausing, check Tencent RTC’s turn-detection configuration and event sequence before changing code at random. The documentation describes both silence-based server VAD and semantic turn detection, but it cannot establish what a particular app is configured to do. Confirm the applied settings and inspect event timestamps alongside a representative recording before assigning a cause.
First, identify which Tencent audio flow your companion uses
Tencent documents a Realtime-compatible WebSocket audio service as well as a separate TRTC AI conversation flow. Both relate to voice interaction, but they expose different configuration surfaces; do not assume a setting from one flow applies to the other.

- Realtime-compatible WebSocket: Tencent says its service is compatible with the Realtime WebSocket GA event specification. Its session setup and input-audio events govern how audio is submitted and turns are detected. Tencent’s WebSocket integration guide documents this flow.
- TRTC AI conversation: Its cloud assistant guide documents semantic turn detection, eagerness, VAD silence time, and interruption controls. See the TRTC Cloud Assistant Quick Start Guide and Tencent RTC’s intelligent interruption guide.
Trace the actual path in your application: identify which service receives microphone audio, which component decides that the user turn is complete, and where the resulting turn is sent to OpenAI. The title alone does not reveal whether premature submission originates in Tencent endpointing, client-side logic, or an event-handling mistake.
Verify the WebSocket session before tuning endpointing
Wait for session.updated
Send session.update during initialization and wait for the server’s session.updated acknowledgement before streaming audio. Tencent says audio append events sent before the initial update are silently discarded. That behavior can make a session appear to receive an incomplete or unexpected audio stream.

- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- Plug-and-Play USB Computer Headset: Simply plug the USB-A connector into your computer and you’re ready to talk or listen without the need to install software
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
Inspect session.updated.session.audio.input.turn_detection to see the configuration the service actually applied. Tencent says it attempts to adapt client settings, so a requested value is not proof that the same value took effect. Keep the update and acknowledgement payloads with your diagnostic logs. The event setup and acknowledgement behavior are covered in the WebSocket integration guide.
Use append and commit according to the selected mode
With server VAD enabled—the documented default in this service—stream audio using input_audio_buffer.append and let the server detect the end of the turn. An explicit input_audio_buffer.commit is required when server_vad is disabled. Do not commit after every small audio chunk while expecting server VAD to decide when a complete turn has arrived; that can submit fragments as separate turns.

- 32mm speaker drivers offer an immersive listening experience with clear sound quality
- One-touch mute/unmute with intuitive in-line control box; Using microphone, slide the button upward to unmute and enabled audio settings in your device. For USB connection, ensure the 3.5mm jack (4-pin) is fully inserted into the USB adapter. For direct 3.5mm connection, first remove the USB adapter from your device
Compare the acknowledged mode with the events your client emits. If the acknowledgement indicates server VAD is off, determine whether your application intentionally uses manual commits and where it decides a turn is complete. If server VAD is on, look for premature commits or other client-side turn boundaries rather than adding more commits. Tencent documents these event behaviors in its Realtime-compatible audio integration guide.

| Approach | What signals turn completion | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Silence-based server VAD | Voice activity and a period without detected speech | Automatic turn handling is straightforward, but a pause within a sentence can be mistaken for an ending if the configured behavior does not fit the speaker’s cadence. |
| Semantic turn detection | Acoustic cues together with semantic completeness and context | Designed to better recognize natural speech endings, though you still need to test it against your users’ speech and interaction needs. |
| Manual turn submission | Client logic decides when to commit or otherwise submit a turn | Offers direct control but makes the client responsible for avoiding boundaries inside an unfinished thought. |
Tencent positions semantic turn detection as a way to use acoustic and contextual information to identify natural endings. In the TRTC AI conversation flow, it is enabled with TurnDetectionMode=3. The rationale and eagerness options are described in Tencent’s guide to semantic turn segmentation and the cloud assistant quick start.

Set eagerness and timing for the conversation
Give speakers room to continue
For semantic detection, Tencent describes low eagerness as giving the user more time before speech is considered complete. If users often pause mid-thought, test low eagerness first using representative recordings. Compare medium or automatic behavior and high eagerness only if faster segmentation is important and the recordings show that speakers have actually finished.
High eagerness segments more quickly; low eagerness waits longer, while medium or automatic is presented as a balance. Tencent does not prescribe one universal setting, so treat these descriptions as guidance for comparative testing, not a guarantee that one value will eliminate premature turns.

Tune silence and interruption durations carefully
In the Tencent cloud assistant guide, STTConfig.VadSilenceTime has a documented range of 240–2,000 ms and a default of 1,000 ms. Tencent says reducing it makes recognition segmentation faster. A shorter silence threshold may improve responsiveness, but it also leaves less time for a speaker to resume after a pause.

Tencent also suggests remote voice suppression to reduce false interruptions in the cloud assistant flow. Treat that as a separate diagnostic option: it does not replace checking the turn-detection mode, applied settings, or event timing. The configuration guidance is in the cloud assistant quick start and intelligent interruption documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check audio chunking and short-answer filtering separately
Check the audio stream
Tencent recommends audio chunks of 20–40 ms for its WebSocket flow. For 16 kHz mono PCM, its guide gives an approximate payload of 640–1,280 bytes per chunk before base64 encoding. Treat this as a starting point for transport checks, not evidence that chunk size caused the premature endpoint or that changing it will fix one.
- Confirm chunks are sent only after the initial
session.updatedacknowledgement. - Check timestamps for gaps, dropped frames, duplicate audio, or a format mismatch.
- Match append and commit events to the acknowledged turn-detection mode.
The chunk recommendation and event requirements are in Tencent’s WebSocket audio integration guide.

Do not confuse short-answer filtering with endpointing
If the failure affects only one-character replies, inspect FilterOneWord in the Tencent cloud assistant flow. Tencent documents it as true by default and advises setting it to false when one-character answers should not be filtered. This can explain missing short replies, but it is distinct from a longer phrase being cut off at a pause. See the cloud assistant quick start.
Build a diagnostic trace before changing production behavior
- Capture initialization: Save the outgoing
session.updatepayload and the correspondingsession.updatedacknowledgement. - Confirm the active flow: Record whether audio uses the Realtime-compatible WebSocket service or TRTC AI conversation, and identify which component forwards completed turns to OpenAI.
- Record the event sequence: Add timestamps for audio append, commit, detected speech end, response creation, and any interruption or turn-complete event your implementation handles.
- Pair logs with a recording: Preserve a representative audio clip and its transcript so you can distinguish a genuine pause from a dropped or truncated stream.
- Change one relevant control: Test the endpointing mode or timing parameter that belongs to the confirmed flow, then compare results on the same kinds of pauses and utterances.
Tencent’s documentation describes available settings and event behavior; it does not show what a specific companion sends to OpenAI. A configuration acknowledgement, event trace, and corresponding audio are needed to establish where a particular premature turn occurs.
