On Windows 11, plug the spare PC into power, then go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Under the plugged-in controls, set Make my device sleep after to Never for the time the stream is running. You can still let the screen turn off: display-off and system-sleep are separate settings. These steps are specifically for Windows 11; they do not establish how a Mac, another operating system, or your streaming app handles an overnight broadcast.
Keep the PC awake while allowing the screen to turn off
- Connect the computer to power. This is especially important for a laptop. Windows provides separate timeout choices for plugged-in and battery use.
- Open the sleep controls. In Windows 11, select Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft documents these controls on its Windows power and sleep settings page.
- Change the plugged-in sleep timeout. Set Make my device sleep after to Never while the overnight stream is running. This is the control for how long the computer waits before sleeping when unused; changing the battery setting is not a substitute for changing the plugged-in setting.
- Choose the display timeout separately. Set Turn my screen off after to a shorter interval if you do not need a lit monitor overnight. The screen can turn off while the computer remains awake.
- Run a short unattended trial. Before relying on the setup overnight, check that the PC stays awake and that the streaming application and destination remain active. This is a practical check, not a guarantee that the service or app will maintain its connection.
- Restore your usual sleep timeout afterward if you want the spare PC to sleep normally when it is idle.
Choose whether the screen stays on

Windows exposes separate screen and sleep timeouts, but the available evidence does not establish particular energy savings or guarantee stream behavior for this specific setup.

If the PC still goes to sleep
- Confirm you changed the plugged-in setting. Windows maintains distinct plugged-in and battery timeout choices. Reopen Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts while the computer is connected to power and check Make my device sleep after.
- Check whether a managed-device policy is involved. Microsoft documents policy controls for plugged-in standby timeouts and for whether applications, services, or drivers can prevent automatic sleep. Availability and behavior depend on Windows edition and version; check for an organization’s policy or other power-management override before changing advanced policy settings. - Do not use Away mode as the ordinary fix. Microsoft describes Away mode for specialized media background work, such as streaming media to other devices while the system appears asleep, and says it should be used only when absolutely necessary. It is not the first-line workaround for an ordinary livestream. See Microsoft’s Windows power-state documentation.
- If Windows stays awake but the broadcast stops, check the app and destination separately. The sleep setting only addresses whether Windows sleeps; it does not promise that a particular streaming application or platform will keep a connection overnight.
