How to stop a smart TV from collecting viewing data

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open your television’s privacy settings and switch off the control named ACR, Viewing Data, Viewing Information, Smart TV Experience, or a similar term. Then review separate controls for app-usage data, personalized advertising, advertising ID, voice services, and antenna viewing. Those settings cover different data flows, so turning off one option is a targeted opt-out—not proof that every diagnostic or service-related process has stopped.

The exact menu depends on the TV brand, model, operating-system version, country, account, and agreements accepted during setup. Use the instructions below as a map, then confirm the wording on your specific television.

What viewing-data collection means

Most smart TVs use a technology called Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). A 2024 peer-reviewed measurement study described ACR as similar to Shazam: the television periodically analyzes what is displayed and matches it with a content library. The resulting event can indicate which program, commercial, channel, or other material appeared and when.

Depending on the platform, the relevant setting can cover more than a broadcast tuner. Roku describes its Smart TV Experience as collecting what and when a person watches through the antenna and connected devices. A VIZIO manual likewise describes collection of audio and video programming content on an internet-connected display. In practical terms, a viewing-data opt-out may matter when you are using a streaming box, game console, Blu-ray player, or computer through an HDMI input, not just when watching live television.

ACR is separate from several other categories of processing:

  • App-usage data: information about opening, closing, or time spent in third-party apps.
  • Advertising ID and interest-based advertising: identifiers and activity used to select or measure ads.
  • Voice features: processing associated with a microphone or voice assistant.
  • Diagnostics and service data: technical logs used for reliability, updates, security, or support.
  • Account and streaming-service data: information handled by individual apps under their own notices.

Because these categories can have separate switches and agreements, privacy work on a TV is a checklist rather than one universal off button.

Before you change a setting

Find the exact model and software version

Write down the model number from the label on the television or from its About, Support, or System information screen. Also note whether the set runs Roku TV, Fire TV, Google TV, a manufacturer interface, or another platform. Menu labels can change after a firmware update, and instructions for one model are not guaranteed to apply to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide what you want to disable

If your goal is to stop recognition of programs and inputs, look first for ACR, viewing information, viewing data, or Smart TV Experience. If you also want to reduce ad profiling, disable personalized advertising or reset and limit the advertising ID. If app behavior is the concern, change the app-usage setting separately. Keep a note of each control you change so that a later reset or software update does not silently restore a choice.

Expect a consent or account screen

Some sets present optional agreements during setup or after a major update. Availability and sharing can depend on market, feature, agreement, and the choices made by the account holder. A control may be absent because the feature is not offered in your country, because it was already declined, or because the television is using a different software release.

Platform controls at a glance

Platform or brand Primary viewing-data control Other controls to check Important qualification
Roku TV Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience Personalize Ads; the option named Use info from TV inputs Roku says Smart TV Experience can include programs, commercials, and channels received by antenna or connected devices.
Amazon Fire TV No single ACR path is documented in the cited instructions Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Collect App Usage Data; Interest-based Ads; over-the-air antenna-content opt-out App usage, advertising, and antenna viewing are separate choices. Do not treat one as a substitute for the others.
VIZIO (documented manual) Menu > Admin & Privacy > Viewing Data Review any advertising or voice choices shown on the same privacy screens The cited manual says declining Viewing Data does not change device functionality. The path is for the documented product/manual, not every model.
LG Use the privacy settings to review optional ACR features Interest-based advertising, voice recognition, and related agreements LG does not publish one universal sequence in the cited statement; availability and sharing vary by market, feature, agreements, and user choices.
Google TV, Samsung, and other platforms Look for ACR, viewing information, or a similarly named option in the device’s privacy settings Advertising ID and personalized-ad controls Advertising-ID instructions are version-specific. Check the exact model and operating-system version in the manufacturer’s help.

Turn off viewing recognition on Roku TV

  1. Press the Home button on the Roku remote.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Privacy.
  4. Open Smart TV Experience.
  5. Disable the feature. If the screen separately shows Use info from TV inputs, turn that option off as well.
  6. Open the advertising section and review Personalize Ads. This is a separate choice concerning sharing of streaming-channel viewing data and personalized advertising.

Roku’s description says that enabling Smart TV Experience or Use info from TV inputs permits collection of programs, commercials, and channels viewed, including material delivered through an antenna and connected devices. Therefore, disabling only an advertising preference does not establish that ACR is off, and disabling Smart TV Experience does not by itself describe every advertising or diagnostic process.

Review privacy controls on Amazon Fire TV

Disable third-party app-usage collection

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Open Privacy Settings.
  4. Choose Collect App Usage Data and opt out.

Amazon describes this control as covering information about opening, closing, and the duration of third-party apps. It is not the same as a viewing-recognition switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check advertising and antenna choices

In the privacy and advertising screens, review Interest-based Ads and any option governing over-the-air content received through an antenna connected directly to the television. Fire TV documents these as separate controls. A person who disables app-usage data but leaves interest-based advertising or antenna viewing enabled has not made the same privacy choice as someone who reviews all three.

Disable Viewing Data on a VIZIO television

  1. Press the Menu button.
  2. Open Admin & Privacy.
  3. Select Viewing Data.
  4. Switch the setting off and confirm if the television asks.

The cited VIZIO manual says declining Viewing Data collection does not change device functionality. That is a manufacturer statement for the product and manual covered; another VIZIO model may use a different path, label, or set of optional services. If you cannot find the item, search the on-screen help for Viewing Data, ACR, or privacy using the model number.

Manage optional collection on LG TVs

LG states that customers can choose whether to use optional features such as voice recognition, ACR, and interest-based advertising, and that these features require separate agreements that can be reviewed, managed, or withdrawn through TV settings. LG does not give one universal menu sequence in the cited statement, so avoid assuming that a path from another model applies to yours.

  1. Open the TV’s Settings or All Settings menu.
  2. Enter the section labelled Privacy, General, Terms & Conditions, or a similar privacy-and-agreements area.
  3. Look for entries containing ACR, Viewing Information, Interest-Based Advertising, Voice Recognition, or optional service agreements.
  4. Withdraw each optional agreement or switch off each feature you do not want, then save the choices.

LG also says feature availability and sharing depend on the market, feature, agreements, and user choices. Consequently, an option missing from your set may reflect a regional or software difference rather than a hidden universal switch.

Google TV, Samsung, and other televisions

On platforms without a documented universal sequence, open Settings and search the privacy, advertising, account, or terms screens for ACR, Viewing Information, Smart TV Experience, Personalized Ads, or Advertising ID. Use the TV’s built-in help with the exact model and operating-system version.

Advertising-ID controls are distinct from ACR. The Network Advertising Initiative publishes version-specific guidance for advertising IDs on Google TV, Roku, Fire TV, and Samsung, while warning that instructions may not be complete or current for every device. Treat that guidance as a pointer to the correct category, then confirm the final label and state on your television.

When a setting appears to be missing

  • Check whether the TV is in a restricted mode, retail/demo mode, or child account.
  • Install any pending system update, restart the television, and look again; updates can move privacy controls.
  • Search the manufacturer’s current support pages for the exact model number, not only the brand name.
  • Review setup agreements. A feature may be unavailable in your market or already declined.
  • Do not infer that the absence of an ACR label means no viewing information is processed; verify the platform’s privacy documentation.

Use a complete privacy checklist

After changing the primary viewing-data setting, work through these categories one by one. Record whether each is off, unavailable, or still required for a service you intentionally use.

  • ACR or viewing information: turn off the switch that recognizes displayed programs or inputs.
  • Input recognition: on platforms that expose it separately, disable collection from HDMI devices, antenna input, or other connected sources.
  • App usage: opt out of data about opening, closing, and duration of third-party apps.
  • Personalized advertising: disable interest-based or personalized ads and review any sharing choice linked to streaming-channel viewing.
  • Advertising ID: reset or limit the identifier where the platform offers that control; this does not disable ACR.
  • Voice recognition: withdraw optional voice agreements or disable voice features if you do not use them.
  • Diagnostics: read the separate diagnostic or crash-reporting setting. An ACR opt-out does not automatically turn this off.
  • Individual apps: inspect privacy settings inside streaming apps, because their collection can be governed by their own accounts and notices.

Verify that the choice stuck

Check the setting after a restart

Exit the menu, power-cycle the television, and return to the same privacy screen. Some devices ask for confirmation, and a restart can reveal whether the change was saved or whether an agreement prompt is blocking it.

Test the relevant input

If you disabled a setting that mentions TV inputs, switch among the antenna, a streaming device, and another HDMI source, then revisit the privacy page. The purpose is not to create a laboratory measurement but to confirm that the option remains off across the inputs you use.

Review account and ad screens separately

Open the advertising and account privacy pages after the ACR control. Confirm that personalized advertising, app usage, and advertising-ID choices reflect your intentions. A page showing a generic privacy notice is not evidence that every category has been disabled.

What an opt-out does—and does not—prove

An ACR opt-out is evidence that the television should stop the specified recognition feature under the platform’s terms and implementation. It does not prove that the set has stopped all network traffic, software-update checks, crash reports, account processing, or data handled by apps you installed.

The distinction is documented by Amazon’s separate controls for third-party app usage, interest-based advertising, and antenna viewing data, and by LG’s description of optional ACR, voice, and advertising services as separate agreements. The VIZIO manual’s statement that turning off Viewing Data does not change device functionality is similarly specific to that documented feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 2024 study in the Proceedings of the ACM Internet Measurement Conference audited ACR traffic on Samsung and LG televisions. The researchers reported that ACR could operate while a television was used as an external display, that opting out stopped traffic to ACR servers under their test conditions, and that they observed differences between the United Kingdom and the United States. Those findings apply to the tested televisions, firmware, markets, and test setup; they are not a guarantee for every brand or current software release.

Troubleshooting common problems

The menu path does not match

Menu names vary by model, software version, and market. Search the television’s help for the terms ACR, Viewing Data, Viewing Information Services, Smart TV Experience, and advertising ID. If none appears, use the model-specific support documentation rather than a guide for a similar-looking set.

The switch turns itself back on

Check whether a firmware update, factory reset, profile change, or renewed terms prompt restored defaults. After each event, revisit privacy settings and record the date and state of the controls. If the television requires an agreement to use a feature, decide whether that feature is worth accepting the associated processing.

Streaming still shows targeted ads

Turning off ACR does not remove advertising chosen by a streaming service, nor does it erase information already held by that service. Review the app’s own account privacy controls and the TV’s separate personalized-ad and advertising-ID settings. A reduction in TV-level profiling can coexist with ads selected by the app or by a separate account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to block every connection

The settings above are the documented, targeted controls. A network firewall or router rule is a different project and can break updates, sign-in, playback, or support functions; the available evidence here does not establish a particular product, domain list, or reliable blocking recipe. Do not present network blocking as a guaranteed replacement for the TV’s own opt-outs.

How to maintain the setting over time

  • Keep the model number and software version with your privacy notes.
  • Recheck the privacy and agreement screens after major firmware updates or a factory reset.
  • When adding a streaming app, read its privacy choices instead of assuming the TV-level ACR setting covers it.
  • Revisit advertising-ID and personalized-ad controls if you change the household account or region.
  • If the television is sold or given away, perform a factory reset and remove accounts; this protects account data but does not substitute for changing your own privacy settings before continued use.

Bottom line

Start with the TV’s ACR, Viewing Data, Viewing Information, or Smart TV Experience control, then separately review app usage, personalized advertising, advertising ID, voice, and antenna-input settings. Match every path to the exact model, software version, and market. The result is a documented, limited opt-out for the categories you changed—not a claim that every form of smart-TV data processing has ended.
