The reliable way to keep a smart TV from sending information to online services is to remove every network connection: turn off or forget Wi‑Fi and unplug Ethernet. Before doing that, decline or disable optional features such as Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), viewing-information services, personalized advertising and voice recognition. An offline TV cannot transmit over a disconnected network during that period, but offline status does not prove that local processing or data already stored on the set has stopped.
Menu names differ by brand, model, country and software version. The steps below separate what you can verify yourself from claims made in manufacturer privacy documents.

What “offline” actually prevents
A television is offline only when it has no usable path to the internet. That means checking both common paths, not merely switching off Wi‑Fi. An Ethernet cable can keep the set connected after Wi‑Fi is disabled, while a saved wireless network can reconnect after a restart.

Disconnecting stops transmission over that disconnected route; it does not erase viewing history, identifiers, logs or other information that may already be stored. Only the TV’s own controls or a documented reset can address retained data, and the available erase options vary by model.

Turn off optional collection before you disconnect
Privacy choices are separate from the network switch. Make these changes while the TV is still online so you can see every available account and service setting, then disconnect the network.
Automatic Content Recognition and viewing information
ACR can identify or infer what appears on the screen. Depending on the platform, that can include antenna broadcasts, a cable box or another HDMI device. Look for labels such as Automatic Content Recognition, Smart TV Experience, Viewing Information, Live Plus or Enhanced Viewing Service. Decline the feature during setup or switch it off in privacy settings.
Roku documents the path Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience for its television-input ACR control. Roku also states that turning off this control does not stop data collection connected with internet streaming, Roku platform interactions or independent streaming-channel providers. That is why an ACR opt-out and a fully disconnected TV are different choices.

Hisense’s Enhanced Viewing Service notice, effective June 10, 2022, describes ACR processing associated with the public WAN IP address. Because that notice is dated, check the current notice and the settings shown by your particular Hisense set rather than assuming the 2022 wording is unchanged.
Personalized advertising and advertising identifiers
Disable interest-based or personalized advertising if the TV offers that choice. A setting that resets an advertising identifier is not the same as refusing ACR or viewing-information collection: resetting changes the identifier, while an opt-out addresses a particular collection or use. Treat each toggle separately and record which ones you changed.
Voice recognition and camera features
Turn off voice recognition, wake-word listening and camera-enabled features unless you actively need them. Some sets place these controls under a voice, assistant or general privacy menu rather than under network settings. Samsung’s privacy information describes voice-recognition and camera-enabled functions and says voice-recognition data collection can be disabled in settings. The label and location still depend on the model.

In a statement dated September 14, 2026, LG Electronics says supported voice interaction begins after a wake-word feature or remote voice button activates it. LG’s statement is a description of LG’s handling, not independent testing and not a guarantee about another manufacturer.

Streaming-app and account settings
Disabling the TV’s ACR does not control a streaming application’s own collection. If you plan to reconnect later, review privacy and viewing settings inside each app and sign out of accounts you do not want left on the television. App providers can apply their own policies even when the television’s platform-level ACR switch is off.
Step-by-step: make the television fully offline
- Finish any needed update first. If the TV requires an online software update, install it before disconnecting. After an update, revisit the privacy menus because an update can add, rename or reset choices.
- Decline optional data features. In the TV’s privacy, viewing-information, advertising and voice menus, disable ACR, viewing-information services, personalized advertising, voice recognition and similar optional controls. Take a photo of the final screens if you need a record of the choices.
- Remove Ethernet. Follow the cable from the TV’s LAN or Ethernet port to the router or wall jack and unplug it at the TV. A disabled Wi‑Fi radio does not matter if this cable remains connected.
- Disable or forget Wi‑Fi. Open the network settings, turn Wi‑Fi off or choose the saved network and select Forget or Disconnect. Forgetting is useful when you want to prevent an automatic reconnection; the wording varies by software.
- Check network status. Use the TV’s status or connection-test screen. Confirm that it reports no wireless connection and no wired connection. If it still shows an address, a cable, hotspot or other network path is active.
- Decline reconnection prompts. Setup assistants, app launches and software-update screens may offer to join a network. Choose the offline, skip or later option. Do not enter a Wi‑Fi password simply to dismiss a prompt.
- Keep the network disconnected. A later restart, factory reset or change of router can present setup again. Recheck the status screen after those events.
If you must reconnect for an update or a feature, reconnect only for that task, install the update, review every privacy choice again and then remove Ethernet and forget or disable Wi‑Fi.
Choose the level of isolation you need

A router rule is an optional network-control method, not a purchase requirement. Capabilities and labels differ by router, and a rule that blocks internet access does not necessarily block communication between devices on your home network. Do not assume that a TV is isolated until its own connection status and the router’s device rule both show the intended result.
Using antenna, cable and HDMI sources
A TV can display local or external sources while remaining offline. An antenna feeds broadcasts directly to the tuner; a cable box or game console can send video over HDMI. These sources do not require the TV’s internet connection for basic picture and sound.

Privacy controls still matter. Roku says its Smart TV Experience ACR can collect what is watched through antenna and connected devices. Turning that ACR control off addresses that particular television-input feature, not collection performed by an internet streaming app, a cable provider, a console or another external service. A console connected by HDMI can maintain its own network connection even when the television is offline.

Samsung
Samsung’s ACR support page describes the feature as optional and says the preference can be changed in TV settings. Samsung’s privacy information says enabled ACR may process viewing history, identifiers and an IP address. Its privacy information also covers voice-recognition and camera-enabled functions and says voice-recognition collection can be disabled in settings. Because Samsung menu paths vary by model and software, use the labels on your set rather than a path copied from a different generation.
Roku
Roku separates television-input ACR from streaming and platform activity. The documented Smart TV Experience control is under Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. Roku says disabling that control does not stop data collection associated with internet streaming, Roku interactions or independent streaming-channel providers. To stop network transmission from the TV itself, you still need to disconnect Wi‑Fi and Ethernet.

LG’s September 14, 2026 statement identifies ACR, voice recognition and interest-based advertising as optional. It says supported voice interaction starts after a wake-word feature or remote voice button activates it. The statement includes this qualification: “Speech-recognition results may be used to support voice-related features but are not uploaded later when the TV is offline or when connectivity is restored.” Attribute that statement to LG Electronics. It describes LG’s stated voice-recognition handling and should not be generalized to every brand, model or type of data.
Hisense
Hisense USA’s Enhanced Viewing Service privacy notice, effective June 10, 2022, says the service can be activated during setup or in settings and describes ACR processing associated with the public WAN IP address. The date matters: review the current notice and your model’s controls before relying on that description.
Offline does not mean “nothing is collected”
With no network path, the set cannot send information to a remote service over that path. It may nevertheless perform local functions, keep cached data or retain settings and history. The available documentation does not establish a universal rule that every manufacturer deletes local records or stops every form of local processing when a TV is offline.
Likewise, do not infer that a later reconnection will upload every item created while offline. LG specifically says its speech-recognition results are not uploaded later when the TV is offline or when connectivity is restored, but that statement is limited to LG’s described voice-recognition handling. It is not evidence about another brand or about ACR, advertising, app or diagnostic data.

The TV still says it is connected
- Look for an Ethernet cable at the TV, not only at the router.
- Check whether Wi‑Fi was turned off or merely disconnected from one network while another saved network remains available.
- Make sure the television has not joined a phone hotspot or guest network.
- Run the TV’s connection-status test again after restarting it.
An app opens even though the TV is offline
An app can show cached menus or previously downloaded content without proving that a live internet connection exists. Test the network status rather than using the app’s screen as evidence. Live streaming, account checks and cloud features should fail when no network path is available.
Advertisements still appear
Seeing an advertisement is not proof that the TV transmitted a viewing record while offline. Broadcast channels, cable services, apps and previously cached material can all show advertising. Check the connection state and the personalized-advertising setting separately.
A setup screen insists on internet access
Choose the skip, later or antenna-only route if the software offers one. If the model cannot complete initial setup without a connection, connect temporarily for setup, disable optional privacy features, then remove Ethernet and forget or disable Wi‑Fi. Record the settings before disconnecting so a later reset does not silently restore defaults.
A practical offline checklist
- ACR or viewing-information service declined or disabled.
- Personalized or interest-based advertising disabled where offered.
- Voice recognition, wake-word and camera features disabled unless required.
- Ethernet cable removed from the TV.
- Wi‑Fi turned off or every saved network forgotten.
- Network-status screen shows no wired or wireless connection.
- Streaming apps and manufacturer services are not being treated as offline-capable merely because their menus open.
- Any future update or reconnection will be followed by another privacy review.
This combination gives you the clearest, verifiable boundary: the television’s optional controls are set to your preference, and the set has no active route to online services.
