You can usually reduce a smart appliance’s data collection by working through five layers: the appliance, its companion app, your account, linked assistants or partner services, and the home router. Disable features you do not use, review retention and deletion separately, and keep security updates enabled. Because controls differ by model and software version, treat the appliance’s current manual and privacy notice as the authority for what each switch actually stops.
What “unnecessary data” means for a smart appliance
A connected oven, washer, refrigerator, thermostat, coffee maker or other appliance can process more than the obvious content you enter. Depending on the model and services enabled, it may handle setup details, account identifiers, sensor readings, device state, usage information, technical diagnostics, audio or video, and information needed to deliver cloud services. Google’s disclosure for Nest products, for example, identifies setup information, sensor readings, audio/video and derived data where applicable, device usage, technical data and service information. That disclosure is specific to Google products, not a description of every appliance.

“Unnecessary” is therefore model-dependent. A temperature reading may be necessary for an appliance’s safety function but not for marketing personalization. Remote control may be useful to you but requires a network connection and account activity. A diagnostic log may help support while still being optional. The goal is data minimization: allow the information and service you need, and turn off or delete the rest where the manufacturer provides a real control.
No reliable current statistic establishes how much data a typical smart appliance sends. Do not assume that a general internet-of-things estimate describes your appliance’s volume or behavior.

Map every place that can collect or share information
Before changing settings, write down the exact appliance model, its companion app, the account used to sign in, and every connected voice assistant or third-party service. A feature can have separate controls in more than one place.
| Layer | What to check | What a change can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Appliance | Microphone, camera, remote access, usage reports, diagnostics, local privacy switches | May stop a particular sensor or feature; it does not automatically erase data already uploaded. |
| Companion app | Privacy, permissions, notifications, analytics, marketing and service connections | May govern app or service behavior; app settings may not change individual appliance settings. |
| Account | Recording retention, auto-delete, activity history, downloaded data and deletion tools | Controls stored account records; deleting records does not necessarily stop future collection. |
| Assistant or partner | Device access, voice recordings, routines and linked integrations | Removing a link prevents that service from accessing the appliance, but the appliance may still communicate with its own provider. |
| Router | Guest network, client isolation, device access schedules and outbound blocking | Limits connectivity from your home network; it is not a provider-side deletion request and may break cloud features. |
Keep a note of the original settings and the date you changed them. That makes it easier to identify which change caused a lost function.
Read the privacy notice before switching anything off
Find the privacy notice for both the appliance and its app. Look for five distinct subjects:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Categories: sensor readings, device state, usage, diagnostics, account and setup information, audio/video or derived information where applicable.
- Purposes: operating the appliance, delivering remote features, security, troubleshooting, personalization, advertising or research.
- Sharing: service providers, assistants, partners or other recipients.
- Retention: how long recordings, logs and account activity remain available.
- Choice and deletion: which data uses are optional, how to withdraw consent, and how to delete stored records.
The Information Commissioner’s Office advises checking a smart product’s collection and sharing information, privacy settings and phone permissions. Its guidance also notes that a device may offer a physical switch or camera cover, depending on the product: Smart products.
Do not treat a broad “privacy” toggle as proof that all telemetry stops. The notice or manual should say which feature and data flow the setting controls.
Disable features you do not use at the source
Remote access
If you never start cycles, check status or receive alerts while away, turn off remote access in the appliance or app. Confirm what stops with it: some products combine remote control, cloud notifications and remote diagnostics under one setting. Local operation may continue, but verify the manual before disabling a service that could be required for safety alerts or warranty support.

Usage reports and personalization
Turn off usage reports, recommendations, marketing personalization and optional analytics when you do not need them. A usage-report switch may stop reports shown to you without stopping technical logs required to keep the service running. Check the wording and the privacy notice rather than inferring more than the manufacturer promises.
Optional diagnostics
Disable optional diagnostic sharing if you are comfortable troubleshooting without automatic support. Keep security and reliability updates enabled. The Federal Trade Commission’s connected-device guidance says to disable or disconnect features you do not use and to check for updates: Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home.
Microphones, cameras and voice control
Only appliances with these components can use the corresponding controls. If the appliance has a physical microphone switch, camera shutter or cover, use it when you do not need listening or viewing. The FTC advises that a physical control is the surest way to stop a smart speaker from listening: “If you want to be sure that sensitive information isn’t picked up by your smart speaker, check for a physical setting (like a button or a switch) that stops the device from listening.” This advice applies to an appliance only when it has an applicable microphone or voice feature. See How To Secure Your Voice Assistant and Protect Your Privacy.
When no physical control exists, disable voice activation in the appliance and in the linked assistant. The FTC notes that assistants can mishear wake words and send recordings to manufacturer servers, so review recording history, retention and human-review options as well as the listening switch.
Review the companion app and phone permissions
Open the app’s settings and inspect privacy, permissions, notifications, analytics, marketing and linked-service pages. On the phone, remove permissions the app does not need for the feature you use. For example, an app that only starts a cycle remotely may not need continuous location access; the exact requirement depends on the app’s design.

Disable automatic device addition if you want to approve each new appliance connection manually. Review cloud-saved Wi-Fi information and remove it if the service offers that choice and you understand the effect on setup.
Disconnect assistants and partner services you no longer need
In each linked assistant, remove the appliance from routines, voice access and account connections you no longer use. Limit access to only the devices that need it. A voice assistant may retain recordings under its own account controls even after you disconnect the appliance, so handle its history separately.
Samsung documents a SmartThings path for choosing which devices Google Assistant can access and for disconnecting Google Assistant: Set up and use Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa with SmartThings. The labels and locations can differ by country, app release and account type; look for a current help page for your exact setup.

After disconnecting a service, test the appliance locally. Remove stale routines and tokens, not just the icon on a home screen. If a partner account has its own data-retention controls, change those as well.
Handle retention, deletion and future collection as separate jobs
These three actions are often confused:
- Stop or reduce future collection: disable the feature or permission that creates the data.
- Reduce retention: choose a shorter recording period or enable auto-delete where offered.
- Delete existing records: use the account’s activity or data-deletion control, or submit the provider’s documented request.
Turning off future collection does not necessarily remove records already stored. Deleting account data does not necessarily disable future collection. A provider may also retain limited records for security, billing, legal or service reasons described in its notice. Record what you deleted and when, then check whether the provider confirms completion.

Use router controls when you need network separation
A router can reduce an appliance’s access to your home network, but it cannot erase information that a manufacturer already received. Start with the router you own; check its current documentation before buying hardware.

Place the appliance on a guest network if your router supports one and the appliance can complete setup there. The FTC includes a guest network among home Wi-Fi security measures: How to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network. A guest network may still permit the appliance to reach the internet, so it does not prevent external transmission by itself.
Device or client isolation
Enable device isolation when available to prevent the appliance from initiating connections to other devices on your home network. Discovery protocols may require exceptions, and an app on your phone may no longer find the appliance locally. Cloud control can continue if internet access remains allowed.
Access schedules and blocking
Use an access schedule or block internet access only after identifying what the appliance needs. Blocking can stop remote control, cloud alerts, usage synchronization, voice integrations, firmware updates and support diagnostics. Some appliances may fail safely; others may display errors or lose setup. Keep a recovery path, such as a documented unblock rule, before testing.
Router isolation is a connectivity measure, not a retention or deletion control. It also cannot stop data collected while the appliance is connected through another network, such as a phone hotspot.

Privacy changes should not leave an internet-connected appliance unpatched. Install firmware and app updates from the manufacturer, use a unique account password and enable multifactor authentication where offered. Change default router credentials and use modern Wi-Fi encryption. These steps reduce unauthorized access even when you have disabled optional collection.

Do not cut power with a smart plug as a privacy strategy. Power removal is not data minimization, can interrupt safe operation, and does not delete provider-held information. Use the appliance’s documented controls instead.
A practical sequence you can follow
- Identify the setup. Record model number, firmware, app, account, assistant and partner services.
- Read both notices. Note categories, purposes, sharing, retention and deletion options for the appliance and app.
- List features you do not use. Mark remote access, voice, usage reports, personalization, diagnostics, cameras and microphones.
- Change appliance controls. Disable only features the manual identifies as optional, and test local operation.
- Change app and phone controls. Remove unneeded permissions, analytics and automatic additions.
- Clean up integrations. Disconnect assistants and partners, then remove routines and stale access.
- Set retention and delete records. Configure auto-delete or shorter history, then use the provider’s deletion tool separately.
- Consider network separation. Try a guest network or isolation rule only after checking which functions require local discovery or cloud access.
- Update and test. Install security updates, test ordinary and emergency functions, and record the final configuration.
Troubleshooting after privacy changes
The appliance disappears from the app
Check whether client isolation blocks local discovery, whether the phone and appliance are on incompatible networks, and whether the app requires cloud access. Temporarily allow the minimum required communication, complete setup, then reapply isolation and test again.
Remote alerts or voice commands stop
This is expected when remote access, assistant linking or internet access has been disabled. Re-enable only the specific service needed, and leave unrelated usage, marketing or recording features off.
Recommended Free Tools
Data still appears after a feature is disabled
Look for a second collection path: appliance diagnostics, app analytics, a linked assistant, another household account or data already retained before the change. Confirm whether the manufacturer says the switch stops collection, sharing, storage or only display.
Updates fail on an isolated network
Allow internet access during the documented update process, then restore the restrictive rule. Never leave an appliance permanently unpatched to avoid a temporary data connection.
Deleting activity did not stop new records
Deletion removes existing records; it is not necessarily a collection opt-out. Return to feature, permission and retention settings and disable the source of the new records.
What a successful setup looks like
- The appliance performs the local functions your household needs.
- Remote, voice, reporting, personalization and diagnostic features are enabled only when there is a clear benefit.
- Unused assistants and partner services are disconnected and no longer appear in routines or permissions.
- Retention is limited where the provider offers auto-delete or shorter history.
- Existing records have been deleted through the correct account control when appropriate.
- The router separates the appliance only when the resulting loss of discovery or cloud functions is acceptable.
- Firmware, app and router security updates remain enabled.
Controls differ substantially between models, editions, regions and software releases. Recheck the current manual and privacy notice after major app or firmware updates, because a menu location or service behavior can change without changing the appliance’s physical controls.
