On a supported Pixel, turn off AI summaries at Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries. To keep summaries for most apps but remove them for a few, use Don’t include these apps instead. If you want to stop every alert from an app, use Settings > Notifications > App notifications; that is a broader control than summaries. If “surfacing” means notifications being sorted into categories, manage the separate Notification organizer setting.
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop
Pixel has several notification features that can look similar in the shade but are controlled independently. A summary is an AI-generated digest of notifications. An app-notification switch controls whether that app can alert you at all. Notification organizer sorts alerts into categories rather than writing a summary. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

This is the right fix when you do not want Pixel to create any notification digest, regardless of which app produced the alerts. The setting affects summary generation, not the underlying app alerts.

- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification summaries.
- Switch the feature off.
Google says this control is off by default. If it is already off, Pixel should not generate AI notification summaries through this feature. You may still see ordinary notifications, notification previews, or categories created by another notification feature; those require the separate controls described below.
If the menu is missing, use the Settings search field for Notification summaries. Google limits the feature to Pixel 9 and later models, excluding A-series devices, and the summaries setting requires English or Japanese as the primary system language. A software update can change the exact menu wording or location, so search is often faster than following an old screenshot.
Exclude only certain apps from summaries
Use an exclusion when you want summaries from some apps but not from others. For example, you might keep a digest of calendar and messaging alerts while preventing a high-volume social or shopping app from appearing in it. Excluding an app does not turn off that app’s notifications.

- Select each app that should be left out of AI summaries.
The overall summaries switch and the exclusion list work at different scopes. Turning the main switch off removes summaries from all apps. Adding an app to Don’t include these apps leaves summaries available for other eligible apps while preserving the selected app’s ordinary notification behavior.
If an app still seems to be summarized after you exclude it, check that you changed the list under Notification summaries, not a similarly named app-notification category. Then verify that the app is not producing a different kind of grouped or categorized notification; the organizer has its own setting.
Stop all notifications from one app
When the real problem is the app’s alerts—not merely their appearance in a digest—disable that app’s notifications. This is broader than excluding summaries: the app will no longer be allowed to post its normal notifications until you turn the permission back on.
From a notification that is already visible
- Touch and hold one of the app’s notifications.
- Open the notification settings shown for that app.
- Turn the app’s notifications off, then confirm if Pixel asks.
From Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications.
- Choose the app.
- Switch its notifications off.
Google’s Pixel notification guide documents both routes. Use this option only when you are comfortable missing every notification from that app, including messages, reminders, security notices, and background-status alerts. If you only dislike the app’s inclusion in an AI digest, use the per-app summary exclusion instead.

Disable Notification organizer category sorting
Some users describe category sorting as Pixel “surfacing” unwanted notifications. Notification organizer is not the AI summary feature. It sorts notifications into groups such as Promotions and news and Social and suggested content. Google says Promotions and news is enabled by default, while Social and suggested content can be enabled in the organizer settings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification organizer.
- Switch the organizer off if you do not want this categorization.
Turning off the organizer does not turn off AI summaries, and turning off summaries does not disable organizer categories. If both behaviors are unwanted, change both settings. If you only want an app’s alerts to remain visible but not be grouped, organizer is the relevant control; do not silence the entire app unless that is your intention.
Check whether your Pixel and language qualify
Google’s stated eligibility rules are narrower than the names of the settings might suggest:
- AI summaries: available on Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series devices.
- Summary languages: English and Japanese; one of those must be the primary system language for the summary settings to be available.
- Notification organizer: Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series devices, with English as the primary system language.
- Organizer regions: Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
These requirements apply to the availability described in Google’s help documentation and can change with Android or Pixel software releases. A Pixel outside the listed model, language, or region may not show the menu at all, or may show fewer options. In that situation, search Settings for the feature name and install available system updates before assuming a notification permission is broken.

Changing the system language solely to expose a menu can affect other parts of the phone, including app text, voice features, and regional behavior. If you do change it for testing, record your original language and restore it afterward; the summaries feature will require English or Japanese as the primary language.
Troubleshoot summaries that are missing or still appearing
The Notification summaries menu is not present
- Confirm that the phone is a Pixel 9 or later and not an A-series model.
- Check the primary system language. AI summaries require English or Japanese; organizer settings require English.
- If you are looking for organizer controls, confirm that the phone is in one of Google’s listed regions: Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, or the United States.
- Open Settings search and enter Notification summaries or Notification organizer, since menu placement can vary after an operating-system update.
- Install pending Pixel and Android system updates, restart the phone, and search again.
Summaries continue after you changed a setting
- Reopen Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries and verify that the main switch is off, or that the app is present in Don’t include these apps.
- Check whether what you are seeing is actually an organizer category or a normal grouped notification. Summaries, organizer sorting, and app alerts use different controls.
- For a specific app, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications and confirm its notification permission and relevant notification categories.
Google’s required system component is blocked
Google directs users troubleshooting summaries to check Android System Intelligence’s notification access. Open Settings > Notifications > Privacy > Notification read, reply and control and make sure Android System Intelligence is allowed. Without that access, summary features may be unavailable or behave unexpectedly. After changing the permission, return to the summaries page and review the global switch and the app exclusion list again.
Only some apps appear in summaries
Review the Don’t include these apps list and the app’s own notification permission. An app that is excluded from summaries can still send ordinary alerts, while an app with notifications disabled cannot provide new alerts for Pixel to summarize. If the notification is a category created by organizer, inspect Notification organizer separately.

Recover a notification you dismissed
Turning off summaries or an app does not restore an alert that you already swiped away. Pixel’s notification history is a separate recovery feature. To enable it, open Settings > Notifications > Notification history and switch it on. Google says that, while enabled, notification history keeps dismissed notifications from the previous 24 hours.

Common scenarios and the least disruptive fix
If the phone creates a single digest that you never want to see, use the global summaries switch. This leaves each app’s normal alerts intact, so you do not have to remember which app produced an important message later.
If only one or two apps make the digest unhelpful, do not disable those apps first. Add them to Don’t include these apps. You will continue receiving their ordinary alerts, but Pixel will not include them in an AI summary. This is the best fit for apps that send useful account or security notices alongside frequent promotional messages.
If an app’s individual alerts are the problem, use App notifications. That change applies even when no summary is generated, so it is the appropriate choice for an app you never want to alert you. Remember that it can also hide messages, reminders, and security warnings from the same app.

If the notification text has not been rewritten but appears under headings such as promotions or social content, inspect Notification organizer. Category placement is not evidence that summaries are enabled. Disable organizer only when you want the category sorting removed; it does not affect app permissions.
How to verify and reverse each change
After changing a setting, send or wait for a new notification from the affected app rather than judging from an alert that was already on screen. A setting change cannot rewrite a notification that was already posted or restore one that was dismissed.

- To restore all summaries, return to Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries and turn the main switch back on.
- To include an app again, open Don’t include these apps and remove that app from the exclusion list.
- To restore an app’s alerts, open App notifications, select the app, and switch notifications back on.
- To restore category sorting, return to Notification organizer and enable it.
If a control appears enabled but no new behavior is visible, check the app’s own notification permission and Android System Intelligence access. Also confirm that the phone still meets the model, language, and region requirements for the feature you are testing.

Use this sequence when you are unsure which behavior you are seeing:
- Look at the content. If Pixel has combined several alerts into an AI-written digest, start with Notification summaries.
- Decide whether the problem is global. Turn off the summaries switch for every app, or use Don’t include these apps for a limited exclusion.
- Check whether alerts from the app itself are unwanted. If yes, disable the app under App notifications; this also prevents ordinary alerts that were never summarized.
- Look for category labels. If alerts are being placed under groups such as promotions or social content, inspect Notification organizer.
- Verify access and eligibility. Check model, primary language, region, Android System Intelligence access, and the app’s notification permission.
- Enable history before experimenting further. Notification history can preserve dismissed alerts for 24 hours while it is enabled.
This order avoids the most common overcorrection: disabling an entire app when the only unwanted behavior is its appearance in a summary, or changing summary settings when category organization is the actual source of the notification’s placement.

Keeping these boundaries in mind makes it easier to reverse a change. Re-enable only the control you actually need: restore an app’s notification switch for its alerts, remove it from the summary exclusion list for summaries, or turn organizer back on for category sorting.
