Unplug the appliance, wait until the smoking stops, and only then remove the cooking basket. The Ninja AF100 Series guide gives that exact instruction for AF100 models. For any other Ninja model, use its own safety instructions, because basket fryers, grill-and-air-fryer units, and oven-style models do not all handle smoke the same way.
After the appliance is safe to handle, let it cool completely, clean only the parts and surfaces approved in the manual, and check for food or grease residue near the heating element. Do not assume that a burnt smell proves an electrical failure, but do stop using the appliance if smoke, odor, damage, or malfunction continues after the model-specific cleaning and setup checks.

What to do when the smoke starts
Respond to the smoke before trying to diagnose it. Keep the appliance on a stable, heat-resistant surface and keep your face and hands away from the exhaust area. Do not pull out a hot basket while smoke is actively billowing unless your model’s safety instructions specifically tell you to do so.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Stop the cooking program. Use the controls if they respond normally.
- Unplug the air fryer. The AF100 Series guide says: “Should the unit emit black smoke, unplug immediately and wait for smoking to stop before removing the cooking basket.” That wording is specific to the AF100 Series; it should not be treated as a diagnostic rule for every Ninja appliance.
- Wait for the smoke to stop. Do not open, clean, or move hot components while smoke is still coming from the unit.
- Let the appliance cool for about 30 minutes before handling it. The AF100 guide directs owners to unplug the unit and allow approximately 30 minutes for cooling before cleaning or storing it.
- Inspect only after cooling. Look for spilled food, pooled grease, burned crumbs, damaged parts, or anything touching a heating surface. Do not touch or scrape the heating element while it is hot.
If you see flames, cannot unplug the appliance safely, or suspect a broader electrical problem, keep clear and follow your local fire-safety procedure. The manuals covered here do not provide a home repair test for an electrical fault.

Identify the Ninja model before changing anything
The safest next step depends on the product family. A removable-basket AF100, a Foodi Grill & Air Fryer, and the DT200 XL Pro Air Oven have different instructions for residue, oil, accessories, and smoke. Find the model number on the appliance label, packaging, or owner’s guide before following advice intended for another design.
| Product family covered by the instructions | Relevant smoke or odor guidance | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ninja AF100 Series Air Fryer | Unplug for black smoke; wait for smoking to stop; cool for approximately 30 minutes; clean the basket, crisper plate, and heating-element residue as directed. | These safety and cleaning directions are for the AF100 Series. |
| Ninja Foodi Grill & Air Fryer | The guide warns that heating oil past its smoke point can give food a burnt, acrid flavour and lists oils intended to produce less smoke on that product family. | Do not apply the oil list as a universal rule for every Ninja air fryer. |
| Ninja DT200 XL Pro Air Oven | For greasy foods or Air Fry, Air Roast, and Whole Roast functions, use the roast tray on the sheet pan. If smoke persists, run a Toast cycle at shade 7 with accessories removed. | This Toast-cycle procedure is for the DT200 XL Pro Air Oven, not a basket-style fryer. |
If your model is not one of these, use its owner’s guide for cleaning, oil, accessory placement, and smoke response. The available manufacturer instructions do not establish one cross-model cause-and-effect chart for every burnt smell.
Clean an AF100 Series air fryer safely
For an AF100, cleaning is the first supported corrective action after the unit has cooled. The guide distinguishes between removable cooking parts, the heating element, and the main unit. Treating those areas alike can damage the appliance or create another hazard.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →1. Unplug and cool the unit
Disconnect the power before removing parts for cleaning. Allow approximately 30 minutes of cooling, as directed in the AF100 guide. A warm surface can hide soft grease and make residue easier to spread, while a hot surface can burn you or damage a cleaning tool.
2. Remove the basket and crisper plate
Take out the removable basket and crisper plate only when they are cool enough to handle. Check both sides for stuck food, dark grease, and crumbs. A small amount of residue can remain trapped where the plate meets the basket, so inspect the edges rather than cleaning only the visible cooking surface.
3. Soak stuck-on residue in warm, soapy water
The AF100 guide says stuck-on residue can be soaked in warm soapy water. Give the residue time to soften instead of forcing it off with a sharp object. Wash the removable parts using the method permitted by your manual, then rinse away soap and dry them completely before reinstalling them.

- FROZEN TO CRISPY: Cook frozen foods in just minutes for an extra-crispy finish.
4. Clean residue near the heating element with the approved brush
The AF100 instructions specifically mention using a cleaning brush to remove food residue from the heating element. Use a soft brush that will not gouge or bend the element, and work only on a fully cool, unplugged appliance. Do not scrape the element with a knife, fork, or metal tool. If residue is inaccessible or appears fused to a damaged component, stop rather than forcing it.
5. Keep the main unit dry
Do not immerse the main unit. The AF100 guide also says not to place the main unit in a dishwasher and not to use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or scouring pads. Those restrictions apply to the powered housing and its sensitive surfaces; they are not permission to soak the entire appliance.
6. Dry and reassemble
Dry every cleaned removable part before putting it back. Moisture left around the basket or crisper plate can interfere with cooking and may create additional splatter when the unit heats. Reassemble the fryer exactly as shown in the AF100 instructions, with the basket and plate seated correctly.
A cleaning brush is a tool category named by the AF100 guide, not a guarantee that one brush fits every Ninja model. If you need a replacement basket, crisper plate, or other part, use the official parts or customer-service route for your exact model and verify compatibility before ordering.
Oil and burnt smells: follow the guide for your appliance family
A burnt or acrid smell can come from oil being heated beyond its smoke point, but the documented oil warning in the material here belongs to the Ninja Foodi Grill & Air Fryer guide. That guide states: “Heating oil past its smoke point can impart food with a burnt, acrid flavour.” It recommends canola, refined coconut, avocado, vegetable, or rapeseed oil for less smoke on that product family.
That recommendation does not establish that one of those oils is correct for every Ninja air fryer. Before changing oil, check the model number and the oil guidance in that model’s manual. Do not pour extra oil into a basket fryer to mask an odor, and do not assume that switching oil will correct smoke caused by food residue, an incorrectly fitted part, or a damaged appliance.

How to use the oil guidance without overgeneralizing it
- Confirm that your appliance is the Foodi Grill & Air Fryer family addressed by the guide.
- Use only the amount of oil required by the recipe and the manual.
- Choose from the oils named in that guide if you are cooking on that product family and want a higher-smoke-point option.
- Stop if the smell remains strong after the appliance is clean and the oil is being used as directed.
The official material does not provide a universal table of smoke points for all Ninja models, nor does it say that every persistent plastic or electrical odor is normal. Treat an unexplained continuing odor as a reason to stop and seek model-specific support rather than as an invitation to keep testing at higher temperatures.
Use the DT200 XL Pro Air Oven’s smoke procedure only on that model
Oven-style Ninja appliances move food and grease through a larger cavity and use different trays from basket fryers. The DT200 XL Pro Air Oven guide gives a specific setup for greasy foods and for the Air Fry, Air Roast, and Whole Roast functions.
Set up the tray correctly
For those DT200 functions, place the roast tray on the sheet pan when cooking greasy foods. This arrangement is the model’s documented way to manage drips and grease. Confirm that both accessories are positioned as shown in the DT200 guide before starting another cycle.
Run the documented Toast cycle if smoke persists
If smoke continues on a DT200 after the accessory setup is corrected, the guide says to run a Toast cycle at shade 7 with accessories removed. Follow that instruction exactly for the DT200 XL Pro Air Oven. Do not transfer this cycle to an AF100 or another basket-style air fryer: the evidence does not support using it outside the model for which it was written.
Let the oven cool after the cycle and inspect the interior, trays, and sheet pan according to the DT200 cleaning instructions. If smoke or odor remains, stop using the oven and contact Ninja customer service rather than improvising a burn-off procedure.
Use symptoms to choose the next safe step
| What you observe | Safe response | What not to conclude |
|---|---|---|
| Black smoke from an AF100 | Unplug immediately, wait until smoking stops, then remove the basket and allow the appliance to cool. | Do not assume the smoke color identifies a specific failed component. |
| Food or grease residue after cooling | Clean removable AF100 parts with the approved method; use the specified cleaning brush for residue on the heating element. | Do not scrape the element or use abrasive tools. |
| Burnt, acrid flavor or smoke while using a Foodi Grill & Air Fryer | Check the oil guidance for that product family and avoid heating oil past its smoke point. | Do not apply the oil list to an unidentified model. |
| Smoke from a DT200 while cooking greasy food | Use the roast tray on the sheet pan for the affected functions, as the DT200 guide directs. | Do not install basket-fryer parts or use an AF100 procedure. |
| Smoke continues after model-specific cleaning and setup | Stop using the appliance and contact Ninja customer service. | Do not keep running cycles to see whether the odor eventually disappears. |
| Cracked, melted, loose, or otherwise damaged part | Stop use and ask customer service or the official accessories channel about the exact model. | Do not assume a replacement basket or tray is a universal fix. |
Things not to do
Several tempting responses are not supported by the AF100 safety and cleaning instructions. Avoid them even if a video or forum post recommends them.

- Do not pour water into the fryer or onto a hot component. The AF100 guidance calls for unplugging, cooling, and approved cleaning; it does not direct owners to add water to the appliance.
- Do not run an improvised burn-off cycle on a basket fryer. The documented Toast-cycle remedy belongs to the DT200 XL Pro Air Oven and should not be generalized.
- Do not scrape or scour the heating element. Use the approved cleaning brush on a cool, unplugged AF100, and stop if residue cannot be removed safely.
- Do not use steel wool, scouring pads, or abrasive cleaners on an AF100. The guide expressly excludes those methods.
- Do not immerse or dishwasher-clean the AF100 main unit. Clean the removable parts and powered housing according to the manual’s separate instructions.
- Do not continue cooking through persistent smoke, a strong unexplained odor, or a malfunction. Cleaning is not a substitute for service when the appliance remains abnormal.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Ninja
The AF100 guide says to stop using a malfunctioning or damaged unit and call Customer Service. That threshold is important because the available manuals do not establish a reliable home test that distinguishes a harmless residue smell from an internal electrical or material problem across all Ninja models.

Contact support after the appliance is cool if any of the following applies:
- Smoke returns after you have cleaned the permitted surfaces and reassembled the appliance correctly.
- The smell remains strong or unusual during a normal, correctly configured cycle.
- You find a cracked, melted, warped, loose, or missing component.
- Controls do not respond normally, the unit shuts down unexpectedly, or another malfunction accompanies the odor.
- You cannot identify the correct cleaning or accessory instructions for your model.
Have the model number available. If a part is missing or damaged, ask Ninja Accessories or Customer Service about parts for that exact model; availability and compatibility must be confirmed rather than assumed.
A practical prevention checklist
Once the appliance has passed the model-specific inspection, use a short checklist before the next cook:
- Confirm the basket, crisper plate, roast tray, sheet pan, or other accessory is the correct part for the model and is seated as instructed.
- Check for crumbs, grease, or food stuck to removable parts and, where the manual allows, around the heating element.
- Use only the cleaner, brush, and washing method approved by the guide.
- Dry removable parts completely before reinstalling them.
- For a Foodi Grill & Air Fryer, follow that guide’s oil advice and avoid heating oil past its smoke point.
- For a DT200 XL Pro Air Oven, use the roast tray on the sheet pan for greasy foods and the specified Air Fry, Air Roast, and Whole Roast functions.
- Keep the appliance under observation during cooking so you can stop it promptly if smoke reappears.
This checklist reduces residue and setup errors, but it is not a guarantee that every odor has a harmless cause. Persistent smoke, damage, or malfunction still calls for customer service.
Quick Recap
Quick decision path
- Is there black smoke? If yes and the appliance is an AF100, unplug immediately, wait for smoking to stop, then remove the basket. For another model, follow its own safety instructions.
- Has the appliance cooled for about 30 minutes? If not, wait before handling it.
- Is the model an AF100? Clean the basket and crisper plate as directed, soak stuck-on residue in warm soapy water, dry the parts, and use the approved cleaning brush for heating-element residue.
- Is it a Foodi Grill & Air Fryer? Check oil use against that family’s smoke-point guidance.
- Is it a DT200 XL Pro Air Oven? Correct the roast-tray and sheet-pan setup; if smoke persists, use the documented Toast cycle at shade 7 with accessories removed.
