Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOpen the privacy app from the macOS menu bar and use its Pause, Disable or on/off control. If you need the overlay removed entirely, quit the app with Command-Q. Use Option-Command-Esc only when the app is frozen. To stop it returning after a restart, go to System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions and remove it from the login list or disable its background activity. The exact command and shortcut depend on the privacy app installed on your Mac.
Identify what is causing the blur
Before changing settings, determine whether a third-party privacy utility is drawing a screen-wide overlay or macOS is warning about a particular item. A privacy app usually blurs large portions of the display, follows windows as they move, or places a translucent layer over everything. Apple’s Sensitive Content Warning behaves differently: it can blur a sensitive photo or video, with a Show control to reveal that individual item. If only photos or videos are affected, check that warning before quitting an unrelated utility.

The title does not identify a particular app, so no universal menu label or keyboard shortcut exists. Menu-bar controls, exclusions and timed pauses are features provided by the app’s developer, not standard macOS commands. Use the following sequence from least disruptive to most disruptive.
Choose the least disruptive way to remove the blur
| Method | Duration | Scope | What happens to the privacy app | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pause or disable from the app | Until resumed, or for a period chosen in the app | Usually all protected windows | Remains running and can be re-enabled | You need a clear screen briefly |
| App exclusion or presentation mode | Until the exclusion is removed or the mode ends | One selected app, meeting or presentation | Continues protecting other apps | You want privacy protection elsewhere |
| Quit with Command-Q | Until you launch the app again or it starts at login | All overlays supplied by that app | Stops running | You are finished with the utility for now |
| Force Quit | Until the app is launched again | All overlays supplied by that app | Is terminated immediately | The app is unresponsive |
| Remove from Login Items or disable background activity | Persistent across restarts | Automatic relaunch and background operation | Does not start automatically; behavior may change | You do not want the blur to return at login |
Pause or turn off the overlay from the menu bar
Open the privacy app’s menu
- Look at the right side of the macOS menu bar for the app’s icon. If it is hidden, open the menu-bar overflow area or the app’s main window from Applications.
- Click the icon and look for wording such as Pause, Disable, Turn off overlay, Stop protection or an on/off switch.
- Choose the command and test the screen immediately. Move a window or switch applications to confirm that the blur has actually stopped.
Some utilities expose a keyboard shortcut in the same menu or in their settings. Peek’s listing, for example, describes switching its overlay on and off from the menu bar or with a configurable shortcut. That pattern is app-specific; a shortcut shown for one utility should not be assumed to work for another.

Check the app’s settings for a shortcut
- Open the utility’s settings or preferences from its menu-bar menu.
- Find a section named Shortcuts, Hotkeys, General or Protection.
- Note the displayed key combination. If it conflicts with another Mac shortcut, change it to an unused combination if the app permits.
- Use the shortcut once, then verify the overlay state from the menu-bar icon. Many apps indicate a paused state by changing the icon or adding a check mark.
If the menu shows only a status indicator and no pause or disable command, continue to the selective controls or quit the app. Do not repeatedly press random function keys: an unknown shortcut could trigger another macOS or application action.
Exclude only the app you need to use
Keeping the privacy utility active while excluding one program is safer when you are handling sensitive material in other windows. Look for controls named App exclusions, Allow list, Ignored apps, Presentation mode or Protected applications.
Add a selected app to an exclusion list
- Open the privacy utility’s settings.
- Open the exclusions or allowed-apps section.
- Choose Add application or the plus button, then select the program in Applications.
- Save the change and bring that program to the front. Confirm that its window is no longer blurred while another app remains protected.
- Remove the exclusion when the task is complete. A broad exclusion can leave private windows visible later, especially if the app is used for meetings or screen sharing.
Use a timed pause
Some utilities offer a pause that expires automatically. Hush’s listing describes choices of 30 minutes, one hour or until the next day, along with selected-app exclusions. Those durations and labels are examples from Hush, not macOS-wide settings. If your app offers a timer, choose the shortest period that covers the task and check when it will end; a pause that lasts until the next day can remain active after you forget about it.

Use presentation or meeting mode
A presentation mode may suppress the overlay while a slide deck, video call or screen recording is active. It may be tied to one application or to a detected meeting. Confirm whether the mode excludes only the foreground app or disables protection globally. When screen sharing is involved, verify the shared preview as well as your local display, because an overlay can be visible to participants even when it is subtle on your monitor.
Quit the app normally
When you want the blur gone everywhere, quit the privacy utility rather than merely closing its window. A Mac app can continue running after its window closes, particularly when it has a menu-bar component or background helper.
- Click the utility’s menu-bar icon.
- Choose Quit, Exit or similarly named command. If its main window is active, you can also press Command-Q.
- Wait a few seconds and check that the menu-bar icon and overlay disappear.
- If the app protects the screen through a separate helper, check whether the utility reports that protection has stopped. Do not delete support files while troubleshooting; quitting is reversible and does not remove the installation.
Closing a window with the red close button is not equivalent to quitting. If the icon remains in the menu bar, the app is still running and can continue blurring the screen.

Force Quit an unresponsive privacy app
Use Force Quit only when the normal Quit command, menu-bar control and shortcut do not respond. Force-quitting terminates the process without allowing it to finish ordinary cleanup, so unsaved work inside that app may be lost.
- Press Option-Command-Esc to open macOS’s Force Quit Applications window.
- Select the privacy utility that is not responding.
- Choose Force Quit, then confirm.
- Wait for the overlay to disappear. If the app relaunches immediately, continue to the Login Items section below rather than repeatedly force-quitting it.
Apple recommends restarting the Mac if an application cannot be force-quit. Save work in other applications first if they are responsive, then choose Apple menu > Restart. A restart clears a stuck process but does not by itself prevent a utility configured to launch at login from returning.
Stop the blur from returning after login
There are two separate startup controls in macOS: whether an app opens at login and whether it is allowed to keep running in the background. Review both if the overlay returns after every restart.

Remove the app from Open at Login
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select General, then Login Items & Extensions.
- In Open at Login, select the privacy app.
- Click the minus button to remove it.
- Restart or log out and back in, then check that the app no longer launches automatically.
Review Background App Activity
- Return to System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
- Look for the privacy utility or one of its listed helper items under background activity.
- Turn off its background permission if you do not want it running without a visible window.
- Read the warning macOS displays before confirming. Apple notes that disabling background activity can affect how an app works, including features that depend on a helper process.
Removing an app from Open at Login prevents automatic launching; it does not necessarily disable an already-running helper. Conversely, disabling background activity may stop protection features but can also leave the main app unable to function correctly. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which control changed the behavior.

Check for a second copy or helper
Some privacy products install a menu-bar app and a separate helper. Quitting the visible app may leave the helper active until the next login. Look again in Login Items & Extensions for entries with the same developer or a similar name. Disable only entries you recognize; unrelated system extensions can support other software.

Look for an in-app “launch at login” setting
An app can have its own startup preference in addition to the macOS list. Open its settings and search for Launch at login, Start automatically or Open on startup. Turn that option off, then confirm the app is also absent from Open at Login.
Best Value
Distinguish a relaunch from a mode that never ended
If the menu-bar icon remains but the overlay returns only after a timer expires, the app may still be running with a scheduled pause. Open its menu and inspect the status or timer. Cancel the timer or choose a permanent disable command if you need the blur off for the rest of the session.
When only certain photos or videos are blurred
A screen-wide overlay is not the only kind of blur on a Mac. Apple’s Sensitive Content Warning can obscure sensitive photos and videos. In that case, click Show on the warning to view the individual item. This setting is separate from a third-party privacy app’s menu-bar controls, pause timers and exclusions.
Use the visual pattern to tell them apart:
- One photo or video is blurred: check Sensitive Content Warning and use its Show control if you trust the item.
- The entire display or many app windows are blurred: look for a privacy utility in the menu bar and follow its pause or quit controls.
- The blur appears only while sharing or presenting: inspect the utility’s presentation mode, meeting integration or selected-app exclusion.
What to do when the controls do not match
Because the installed app and version are not specified, its exact labels cannot be guaranteed. Use the app’s name and version to locate its current help page or support instructions if none of the menu items above exists. Search within the app for the terms pause, overlay, privacy, exclusion and shortcut.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDo not assume that uninstalling is necessary just to clear the screen. A temporary pause or normal quit is reversible and preserves the app’s configuration. Uninstall only when you have decided you no longer need the utility and have confirmed that any helper or login item it installed is also removed.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Is the blur screen-wide, or limited to a sensitive photo or video?
- Does the utility’s menu-bar icon show a pause, disable or toggle command?
- Does its settings page offer an app exclusion, presentation mode or timed pause?
- Did you choose Quit or press Command-Q, rather than only closing a window?
- If the app is frozen, did you use Option-Command-Esc and select the correct process?
- After quitting, is the app listed under System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions?
- Have you checked both Open at Login and background activity?
- Did changing a background permission affect other features that rely on the helper?
Which option should you use?
Choose a pause when you expect to resume protection soon. Choose an exclusion when one application must stay clear while other windows remain protected. Choose Quit when you want the overlay removed for the whole session. Choose Force Quit only when the app will not respond. Finally, change Login Items & Extensions when the real problem is automatic relaunch after restarting the Mac.
