The quietest, least invasive fix is to isolate the metal ring from whatever it hits. First move the tool in its real pocket, pouch, bag, or carabiner setup and identify the contact point. Then cover the contact area with a snug piece of heat-shrink tubing, a silicone sleeve, or a tightly secured cord wrap. Reduce free swing by shortening or tensioning the lanyard. If the ring is bent, loose, or wrong for the model, replace it with the matching Leatherman part. If you never use the attachment point, removing the ring eliminates the noise and abrasion altogether.
These solutions address two different problems: impact noise comes from movement, while scratches come from hard metal sliding or striking another surface. Treat them separately and check that any added material cannot migrate into a blade, pivot, or opening mechanism.

What the lanyard ring does
A Leatherman lanyard ring is an attachment point for carrying a multi-tool on a lanyard, carabiner, or sling. Leatherman describes its Quick-Release Lanyard Ring as a way to keep the tool close at hand when attached to those systems. The ring is intentionally exposed so a connector can pass through it, which also leaves a bare metal surface able to contact nearby hardware or fabric fittings.
Current parts use either 420 stainless steel or a black-oxide finish, depending on the listing. Those materials are durable, but neither is soft compared with nylon webbing, coated clips, painted hardware, or a phone and laptop in the same bag. A ring that is harmless when the tool hangs alone can become noisy when it swings against a pocket clip, keyring, zipper pull, or another tool.

The ring is not a locking mechanism for the tool and it is not intended to keep blades closed. Its job is simply to provide a carry attachment. Any modification should preserve safe access to the tool and keep moving components unobstructed.
Find exactly what is making contact
Do not start by wrapping the ring blindly. A soft cover placed on the wrong section can hide the real problem, add bulk, or work loose near a pivot. Reproduce the way you normally carry the tool and watch and listen while it moves.
Recreate the real carry position
- Unload the pocket, pouch, bag compartment, or carabiner that normally carries the multi-tool.
- Attach the tool exactly as you usually do, including the same lanyard, clip, keyring, or sling.
- Move it slowly through the motions that produce the sound: walking, climbing stairs, sitting down, placing the bag on a surface, or retrieving the tool.
- Use a finger to steady the ring briefly. If the noise stops, the ring is swinging; if it continues, another part may be contacting the tool.
- Look for polished spots, fresh scuffs, or worn coating on the ring and on the neighboring hardware. These marks help identify a scratch path that may be hard to hear.
Common contact points
- Ring against the tool body: usually produces a sharp metallic tick and may leave small bright marks.
- Ring against a pocket clip: often happens when the clip and ring occupy the same plane and the tool twists.
- Ring against a keyring or carabiner gate: creates repeated clicks as the connector pivots.
- Ring against zipper or bag hardware: can produce both rattling and abrasion on a finish or coating.
- Ring against fabric only: usually causes little noise, but a hard edge can still wear a hole over time.
This inspection is practical troubleshooting, not a published Leatherman test procedure. The manufacturer identifies the ring as a carry attachment; the exact source of a rattle depends on your particular setup.

| Option | Scratch protection | Noise reduction | Reversible | Added bulk | Access to ring | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heat-shrink tubing | High where covered | High for covered contact | Usually; cut off carefully | Low to medium | Reduced slightly | Heat or tubing can foul moving parts if fitted too far |
| Silicone sleeve | High | High | Yes | Low to medium | Reduced slightly | Sleeve can migrate if oversized |
| Tight cord or paracord wrap | Medium to high | Medium to high | Yes | Low | Usually good | Fraying or a loose end can enter a pivot |
| Shorter or tensioned lanyard | None by itself | Medium to high | Yes | None | Full | Excessive tension can stress attachment hardware |
| Model-matched replacement ring | Depends on covering | High if the old ring was loose or bent | No, but reversible as a part change | Same as original | Full | Incorrect compatibility or damaged screws |
| Remove the ring | High because contact ends | High because movement ends | Yes if the original parts are retained | Lowest | None | You lose that carry option |
Start with the smallest change that addresses the observed contact. A sleeve or wrap is appropriate when the ring is sound but touches gear. Tensioning is appropriate when the ring is intact and simply swings too freely. Replacement is the right answer for bent, loose, damaged, or incompatible hardware.
Fix 1: Isolate the metal with a soft cover
Heat-shrink tubing
Choose tubing that fits snugly over the section of ring that touches your gear. The goal is a close mechanical fit, not a thick cushion that blocks the connector. Cut a length slightly longer than the contact zone, slide it into place, and use the minimum heat needed for it to contract. Keep the tool away from flames and avoid heating the multi-tool itself.
- Remove the tool from all carry hardware and clean the ring so grit is not trapped underneath.
- Measure the exposed section that needs protection. Do not cover a hinge, screw head, blade opening, or pivot.
- Slide the tubing into position while it is still loose.
- Apply controlled heat from a suitable heat source while continuously moving it. Stop as soon as the tubing grips the ring.
- Let it cool completely, then pull and twist the ring by hand to check that the tubing does not slide toward moving parts.
- Recreate your normal carry motion and inspect the tubing after the first walk or work session.
Heat-shrink tubing is a mechanical recommendation based on the ring’s metal construction and exposed carry role; it is not specified as a Leatherman service modification. Replace it if it splits, hardens, or starts migrating.

Silicone sleeve
A short silicone sleeve avoids heat and is easy to remove. Select an inside diameter just smaller than the ring’s covered section so friction holds it in place. If the sleeve is loose, it can bunch at an opening and interfere with the connector or a nearby tool component. Trim ragged edges and verify that the ring can still accept your lanyard, carabiner, or sling.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Cord or paracord wrap
A tight wrap can cushion contact while preserving more of the ring’s opening than a thick tube. Use a cord with a clean, compact finish. Pull each turn tight, keep the wrap on the outer contact area, and secure the end so it cannot unravel. Melted synthetic cord ends can be hot and sharp while being finished; let them cool before handling. Inspect the wrap for fuzzing, looseness, and contamination. A frayed strand near a blade or pivot is a reason to remove and replace the wrap immediately.
Fix 2: Stop the ring from swinging
When the ring is not damaged, reducing its travel often removes most of the rattle without changing the ring. A shorter lanyard leaves less distance for the ring to gain speed. A snug attachment point also keeps the ring loaded in one direction instead of allowing it to strike adjacent hardware repeatedly.
Shorten the lanyard
Reposition the knot, shorten the loop, or use a connector with less slack. Leave enough length to retrieve the tool without pulling it against the attachment point. After shortening, open and close every tool component normally and make sure your hand does not land on a sharp connector or knot.
Orient the attachment
Rotate the clip, carabiner, or sling connection so the ring rests against one side rather than crossing the path of a clip or zipper. The best orientation is the one that keeps the ring loaded in one direction while still allowing the tool to be removed with one deliberate motion. Do not force the gate of a connector around the ring or trap a blade against it.
Use controlled tension, not a hard pull
A light, steady tension can prevent free swing. Excessive tension is counterproductive: it can load the ring, knot, clip, or mounting screws and make retrieval awkward. If the ring only becomes quiet when pulled very tight, treat that as evidence of a loose or damaged part and inspect it instead of increasing tension.

Fix 3: Replace a bent, loose, or wrong ring
Replacement is preferable to padding when the metal is visibly bent, the attachment hole has changed shape, the ring rocks at its mount, or the screws no longer hold it securely. A damaged ring can continue to rattle and may eventually detach from the tool.
Quick-Release Lanyard Ring
Leatherman lists the current Quick-Release Lanyard Ring for carrying a multi-tool on a lanyard, carabiner, or sling. The listing specifies 420 stainless steel or black oxide and identifies Wave Plus compatibility. Wave Plus owners should verify the exact listing and current stock before ordering; compatibility is model-specific.
Two-Screw Lanyard Ring
The Two-Screw Lanyard Ring is listed as 420 stainless steel and installs with two T6 screws. Leatherman identifies it for ARC, Bond, Curl, and FREE T2. Its two-screw mounting is intended to provide a solid, precise fit, but the correct screw and ring must match the tool family.

FREE K-series ring-and-clip kit
The FREE K-series kit includes a lanyard ring, pocket clip, two T6 screws, and a Torx T6 wrench. Compatibility is listed for FREE K2X and FREE K4X, with a Batch #009 adapter also noted. Do not assume that a ring from another FREE model will fit; use the kit identified for your exact version.
Safe replacement sequence
- Confirm the model name and, where relevant, the batch or adapter requirement.
- Compare the replacement’s screw count and mounting pattern with the part on your tool.
- Work on a clean, stable surface and close or secure all blades before handling the mounting area.
- Use the specified T6 driver or the wrench supplied with the compatible kit. A poor-fitting driver can damage the screw recess.
- Remove the old screws without forcing a seized fastener. Stop if the head begins to deform.
- Seat the replacement ring flat, install both screws where the design calls for two, and tighten them evenly. Do not guess at a torque value that the listing does not provide.
- Check that the ring pivots or sits as designed, that the clip does not bind, and that every blade and tool opens and closes without contact.
- Test the tool unloaded, then in the real carry setup, before relying on it for work or climbing.
If a screw will not tighten, the ring still rocks, or a mounting surface is damaged, stop using that attachment point and seek service rather than compensating with adhesive or an over-tightened screw.
Fix 4: Remove the ring when you do not need it
Removing an unused ring is the most direct way to eliminate metal-to-gear contact. It also removes the option of attaching the tool by that point, so store the ring and screws together if you may reinstall them. Do not leave loose screws in the tool or bag.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
After removal, inspect the exposed mounting area for sharp edges, debris, or a gap that could catch fabric. Keep the tool in a pouch or pocket position that does not place a blade or sharp corner against your gear. Removal is a practical carry choice, not a general manufacturer service instruction.

Listings and inventory can change. Check the current manufacturer entry immediately before purchase, especially if a page shows backorder or unavailable status. A generic ring may fit physically yet fail to align, retain the correct clearance, or use the right fasteners.
Prevent scratches after the repair
- Separate hard objects: Keep keys, loose hardware, and another metal tool from sharing the same pocket unless a pouch divides them.
- Protect coated surfaces: Place the multi-tool in a fabric or leather pocket when the surrounding gear has a painted, anodized, or glossy finish.
- Keep grit out: Dust trapped under a sleeve or wrap can act like abrasive paste. Remove and clean the covering if it becomes dirty.
- Inspect attachment gates: A connector with a rough edge can scratch even after the ring is covered. Replace or reposition the connector if it is the actual source.
- Check after wet use: Dry the tool and soft covering so trapped moisture does not remain against the ring or nearby hardware.
Prevent rattling from returning
Make a short movement check part of your normal maintenance. Hold the assembled carry setup, shake it gently, and listen for a new metallic tick. Then inspect the ring by hand for side-to-side play. A new gap, a loose screw, or a wrap that has shifted should be corrected before the tool is carried in a crowded bag.
Soft coverings wear. Replace them when they become thin, split, sticky, or loose. Cord wraps need special attention because a single frayed strand can migrate toward a pivot. If the ring itself is gradually bending or loosening, stop trying to silence it with padding and replace the hardware.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The ring still rattles after a sleeve is fitted
- Check whether the uncovered end of the ring is striking the tool or connector.
- Look for a loose mounting screw or a ring that rocks at its base.
- Shorten or reorient the lanyard so the ring cannot build up free swing.
- Remove nearby keys or clips one at a time to identify a second impact source.
The sleeve keeps sliding toward the pivot
- Remove it and use a smaller inside diameter or shorter covered section.
- Do not rely on adhesive where it could enter a blade or pivot.
- Replace the sleeve if its material has stretched or softened.
The ring scratches despite a cord wrap
- Inspect the wrap for compressed or exposed strands.
- Confirm that the actual contact is not a carabiner gate, clip, or zipper pull.
- Use a continuous silicone sleeve or heat-shrink section over the contact area.
- Separate the tool from hard neighboring objects with a pouch.
The replacement does not sit flat
- Stop tightening and verify the model and mounting pattern.
- Check for debris under the ring and for a damaged screw head.
- Do not force a generic part or substitute an unlisted screw.
- Leave the attachment unused until the correct hardware is installed securely.
Safety checks before carrying the tool
- Confirm that no tubing, silicone, cord, or loose end reaches a blade, driver, spring, or pivot.
- Open and close each implement slowly while watching the repaired area.
- Pull the ring and connector by hand with moderate force to check for movement.
- Walk with the tool in its normal position and listen for contact.
- Inspect the repair again after the first real use and at regular intervals.
A quiet ring is not automatically a secure ring. Noise reduction should never come from trapping a blade, blocking a lock, or overloading a screw or connector.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich solution should you choose?
Choose a snug soft sleeve when the ring is structurally sound and your priority is protecting a bag, clip, or finish. Choose a cord wrap when you need a thin, easily removable cushion and can inspect it frequently. Shorten or tension the lanyard when the problem is free swing rather than hard contact. Replace the ring when it is bent, loose, or incompatible with the tool. Remove it when you do not use the attachment and want the simplest permanent reduction in noise and abrasion.
No authoritative statistic establishes how often this specific rattling or scratching issue occurs. Reports are individual carry experiences, and the correct remedy depends on the ring, connector, and surface that meet in your setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I glue the lanyard ring so it stops moving?
Avoid glue as a first-line fix. It can contaminate a pivot, block a moving part, make later replacement difficult, and hide a loose or damaged mount. Use a snug sleeve, a controlled lanyard position, or the model-matched replacement instead.
Will heat-shrink tubing make the ring unusable?
It can if it is too thick or covers the opening. Cover only the contact section, keep the connector path clear, and test the actual carabiner, lanyard, or sling before carrying the tool.
Recommended Free Tools
What driver is needed for the two-screw ring?
The Two-Screw Lanyard Ring uses two T6 screws. The FREE K-series ring-and-clip kit includes a Torx T6 wrench.
Is removing the ring safe?
Removal eliminates that attachment point and its metal contact, provided the tool is reassembled correctly and the exposed mounting area has no sharp edge or loose hardware. Keep the original parts if you may reinstall them.
Why does my ring rattle only in a bag?
A bag allows the tool, ring, zipper pulls, clips, and other contents to move independently. Recreate the packed arrangement, identify the exact impact pair, then isolate that contact or separate the hard objects with a pouch.
