Yes—you can sterilize baby bottles without owning an electric or microwave sterilizer. The two practical no-appliance options are boiling cleaned, disassembled parts in a pan and soaking them in a cold-water sterilizing solution. Clean every part first, check the bottle maker’s heat and chemical compatibility instructions, and follow the guidance used where you live. UK NHS guidance calls for at least 10 minutes of boiling or at least 30 minutes in solution; US CDC guidance describes sanitizing cleaned parts by boiling for 5 minutes. Those timings are not interchangeable, because the agencies use different terminology and recommendations.

This guide explains both procedures, how to prevent recontamination, when daily treatment matters most, and why dishwasher advice differs between the NHS and CDC.

What to do before any sterilizing method

Sterilizing or sanitizing cannot compensate for milk residue left on a bottle. Bacteria can remain beneath a ring, inside a valve, or around a teat opening unless the parts are fully washed first. The cleaning sequence is the same whether you later use boiling water, a cold-water solution, steam, or a qualifying dishwasher cycle.

1. Wash your hands and prepare a clean work area

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before handling feeding equipment.
  • Use a basin reserved for infant-feeding items rather than washing them directly in a kitchen sink, which can contain food residue and germs. This is the CDC’s recommendation.
  • Have a dedicated bottle brush and, where needed, a small teat or valve brush. A brush cleans; it does not sterilize.

2. Take every bottle apart

Separate the bottle, cap, screw ring, teat, valve, vent, straw, and any anti-colic or specialist insert. Parts that look clean can trap milk in seams and channels. Keep each manufacturer’s components together if several bottle systems are being washed at once.

Dr. Brown's All-in-One Baby Bottle Sterilizer and Dryer
  • BABY BOTTLE STERILIZER AND DRYER. Sterilize up to six Narrow or Wide-Neck baby bottles at once, plus bottle accessories, breast pump parts, pacifiers, teethers, and more.
  • ELIMINATES HARMFUL BACTERIA. Steam sterilizing eliminates 99.9% of bacteria, mold, and the yeast that causes thrush.
  • 4-IN-1 BENEFITS. Multiple functions let you sterilize only, dry only, combination sterilize and dry, or use as storage.
  • SET IT AND FORGET IT. Just put clean contents into the sterilizer, start a cycle, and walk away. No boiling necessary! Auto shut-off feature helps prevent overheating.
  • 24 HOURS OF STERILIZATION. Contents can stay sterilized up to 24 hours after the cycle has ended if the lid is unopened – meaning you can keep your bottles and parts stored inside with no contamination.

3. Wash with hot, soapy water

Use hot water and dish soap, scrubbing the inside and outside of each part with the appropriate brush. Force wash water through small holes and valves. Do not rely on a quick rinse or on soaking alone.

4. Rinse and inspect

Rinse every part under running water so no soap film remains. Look for cloudy deposits, cracks, sticky areas, or a valve that no longer opens and closes correctly. Replace damaged parts before treating the set.

5. Let cleaned parts air-dry

Place the parts on a clean, disinfected drying surface and allow them to dry completely. A cloth towel can transfer lint or germs. If you are going straight to boiling or chemical treatment, the parts may be wet after rinsing; the important point is that they have been thoroughly cleaned.

Method 1: Boil bottles in a pan

Boiling is the simplest appliance-free method, but only components rated for boiling should go into the pan. Some plastics, painted markings, valves, and specialty accessories can deform or deteriorate with heat. Check the product instructions for every component, not just the bottle body.

UK NHS procedure: boil for at least 10 minutes

The NHS bottle-sterilizing guidance says to place the cleaned items in a large pan, keep every item below the water surface, and boil for at least 10 minutes. Use a timer rather than estimating. The pan must contain enough water to cover the parts throughout the full period; add water before starting rather than lifting the lid repeatedly.

  1. Confirm that the bottle, teat, ring, cap, valve, and other parts are safe to boil.
  2. Put the disassembled, cleaned parts in a large pan and cover them completely with water.
  3. Bring the water to a full boil.
  4. Start a timer for at least 10 minutes once boiling is established. Keep all parts submerged.
  5. Turn off the heat when the time is complete. Leave items in the covered pan until you are ready to assemble them, if practical.
  6. Remove parts with clean hands or sterile tongs, assemble promptly, and place the bottle on a clean surface.

The NHS warns that boiling can make teats wear out faster. Inspect teats regularly for cracks, tears, tackiness, stretching, or a changed hole size, and replace any part that is damaged.

US CDC procedure: boil for 5 minutes

US guidance uses the term sanitizing rather than sterilizing. The CDC procedure says that after cleaning, you should put disassembled items in a pot, cover them with water, bring the water to a boil, and boil for 5 minutes. Remove the parts with clean tongs and let them air-dry completely.

  1. Clean and disassemble all feeding parts.
  2. Place them in a pot and ensure they are fully covered with water.
  3. Bring the water to a boil and boil for 5 minutes.
  4. Use clean tongs to remove the parts.
  5. Set them on a clean, unused towel or drying mat and let them air-dry completely before storage or use.

Do not present the NHS’s 10-minute instruction and the CDC’s 5-minute instruction as a choice between two equivalent settings. They are the current procedures of different authorities, with different terminology and context. Follow the public-health guidance applicable to your location and the bottle manufacturer’s directions.

Boiling problems and safer fixes

  • Parts float: use a clean utensil to keep them under the water, or choose a larger pan with enough water. Do not assume a floating teat has been treated.
  • Water evaporates: stop, let the pan cool safely, add enough water to cover all parts, and restart the locally applicable timed procedure. Never leave a boiling pan unattended.
  • Plastic warps: discontinue boiling that component and check its instructions. Replace it if its shape, seal, or fit has changed.
  • Mineral film appears: wash and rinse the parts again. A film does not prove that the item is unsafe, but residue can hide damage and should not be left on feeding surfaces.
  • You cannot identify the material: contact the manufacturer or use a method explicitly approved for that part instead of guessing.

Method 2: Cold-water sterilizing solution

A cold-water solution is another no-appliance option. Tablets and liquid concentrates do not all have the same dilution, contact time, or compatibility, so follow the label for the specific product. Do not substitute a household disinfectant or make a stronger mixture; feeding equipment must be treated only with a product intended for it.

Set up the solution

  1. Wash a container, lid, and submerger or cover that are intended for the solution.
  2. Measure the water and tablet or concentrate exactly as the product instructions specify.
  3. Stir or wait for the product to dissolve as directed.
  4. Place cleaned, disassembled feeding parts into the solution.

Keep every part submerged

The NHS says feeding equipment should remain in the solution for at least 30 minutes. Trapped air bubbles can leave untreated patches, so tilt and reposition parts until solution fills bottles, teats, valves, and channels. Keep the equipment under the liquid with the supplied cover or submerger. If a part repeatedly floats, use the approved submerging device rather than placing an unrelated heavy object in the solution.

Observe the 24-hour replacement interval

Under NHS guidance, change the solution every 24 hours. Write the preparation time on the container if several caregivers use it, and discard it sooner if the product label requires an earlier change. Wash and rinse the container before making a fresh batch. Never top up an old solution with more powder, tablets, or water.

Remove, rinse, and assemble according to the label

Follow the solution maker’s instructions about whether treated parts should be rinsed with safe water. If rinsing is required, use the specified method; if it is not required, avoid an unnecessary rinse that could recontaminate the parts. Handle the items with clean hands or sterile tongs, assemble them promptly, and protect them from dust and splashes.

Dishwasher cycles: cleaning is not automatically sterilizing

Dishwasher advice depends on the authority and on the machine’s settings. The NHS says a dishwasher cleans feeding equipment but does not sterilize it. The CDC says a dishwasher-safe item washed with hot water and a heated drying cycle, or a sanitizing setting, does not need a separate sanitizing step under its US guidance.

Authority and context What the guidance says What you should check
NHS, UK-facing bottle guidance A dishwasher cleans but does not sterilize feeding equipment. Use an approved sterilizing method after washing if following NHS advice.
CDC, US infant-feeding guidance A dishwasher cycle with hot water plus heated drying or a sanitizing setting makes a separate sanitizing step unnecessary. Confirm that the part is dishwasher-safe and that the selected cycle actually includes the required heat and drying or sanitizing function.

An ordinary cool or short cycle should not be described as sterilization. Put small parts in a closed dishwasher basket so they do not fall onto the heating element, and follow the bottle maker’s dishwasher instructions.

Microwave and plug-in steam options

If you have access to a microwave steam container or electric steam unit, use only the device instructions and the bottle maker’s compatibility guidance. NHS and CDC guidance both direct users to the specific appliance instructions. There is no universal microwave time that can safely be applied to every container, wattage, load size, or bottle material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use only parts and containers labeled as microwave- or steam-safe.
  • Arrange bottle openings and teats exactly as the appliance instructions show so steam can reach the surfaces.
  • Do not microwave sealed bottles or any item containing metal.
  • Allow the container to cool before opening; hot steam can cause serious burns.
  • Do not assume that a microwave used without the approved steam container provides a controlled sanitizing cycle.

How to keep treated bottles from becoming contaminated again

Treatment ends when the parts are removed, but the risk of contamination returns if wet equipment touches dirty surfaces or hands. The NHS advises leaving items in the sterilizer or pan until needed when possible. If you remove them, assemble them promptly with clean hands or sterile tongs on a clean, disinfected surface.

For boiling or solution treatment

  • Wash your hands before touching treated parts.
  • Touch only the outside surfaces that will not contact milk, or use sterile tongs.
  • Assemble the bottle immediately, ensuring the teat, valve, and ring are seated correctly.
  • Keep assembled bottles covered and away from sinks, raw food, pets, and household cleaning products.

For air-dried parts

CDC recommends complete air drying before storage. Arrange parts so air can circulate rather than stacking wet components together. Once dry, store them in a clean, protected cabinet or covered container. Do not use a damp towel to speed drying, and do not seal moisture inside a container because it can support microbial growth.

How often should you sterilize or sanitize?

There is no single worldwide schedule. The NHS recommends sterilizing feeding equipment until the baby is at least 12 months old. Its UK-facing advice includes boiling, cold-water solution, and steam as options.

CDC guidance places more emphasis on the baby’s age and health status. Daily sanitizing is particularly important for babies younger than 2 months, babies born prematurely, and babies with weakened immune systems. For older, healthy babies, CDC says daily sanitizing may not be necessary when feeding items are carefully cleaned after every use. Cleaning after every feeding remains essential in either case.

Situation Relevant guidance Practical implication
Following NHS guidance in the UK Sterilize feeding equipment until at least 12 months. Choose boiling, a cold-water solution, steam, or another NHS-listed method and maintain it consistently.
Baby younger than 2 months in the US Daily sanitizing is particularly important. After careful cleaning, use the CDC 5-minute boiling procedure or another CDC-accepted method each day.
Baby born prematurely or with a weakened immune system in the US Daily sanitizing is particularly important. Follow the CDC process and ask the child’s clinician if special equipment or timing is needed.
Older, healthy baby in the US Daily sanitizing may not be necessary when items are carefully cleaned after every use. Clean promptly and thoroughly after each feeding; continue daily sanitizing if advised by your clinician or local guidance.

If your local health service, pediatric clinician, or product instructions are stricter than this summary, use the stricter direction. Premature birth, immune problems, illness, or a recalled or damaged product warrants individualized advice.

Choosing between boiling and cold-water solution

Consideration Boiling in a pan Cold-water solution
Equipment Large pan, clean water, timer, and clean tongs if needed. Approved container, water, solution product, and submerger or cover.
Time in the treatment step NHS: at least 10 minutes; CDC: 5 minutes. NHS: at least 30 minutes; follow the product label.
Consumables Water and fuel or electricity for heating. Tablets or concentrate, replaced at least every 24 hours under NHS guidance.
Main compatibility concern Heat can shorten teat life or damage plastics and valves. Concentration, contact time, and chemical compatibility vary by product.
Best fit When all parts are confirmed boil-safe and you can supervise a pan. When heat is unsuitable or unavailable and you can maintain the correct solution.

Neither method is automatically better for every bottle. The deciding factors are the guidance for your location, the manufacturer’s compatibility instructions, the baby’s risk status, and whether you can complete the process without leaving parts exposed or untreated.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Skipping the wash

Problem: placing milk-coated parts directly in boiling water or solution. Correction: disassemble, scrub with hot soapy water, rinse, and then treat the parts.

Using one timing everywhere

Problem: treating 5 minutes and 10 minutes as interchangeable. Correction: identify whether you are following CDC US sanitizing guidance or NHS UK sterilizing guidance and use that authority’s timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving an air pocket

Problem: a teat or valve floats with an air bubble inside. Correction: tilt and submerge it fully; use the solution container’s submerger if applicable.

Using an unapproved chemical

Problem: substituting bleach, surface disinfectant, or an improvised concentration. Correction: use only a feeding-equipment solution and follow its label exactly.

Handling with dirty hands

Problem: touching treated parts after handling the sink, phone, raw food, or a dirty towel. Correction: wash hands again or use sterile tongs, and assemble on a clean, disinfected surface.

Ignoring worn teats and valves

Problem: continuing to use a part that is cracked, torn, sticky, misshapen, or no longer seals. Correction: replace the damaged component; sterilizing cannot restore its mechanical safety.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a dishwasher always sterilizes

Problem: relying on any dishwasher cycle as a sterilizing step. Correction: check whether you are following NHS or CDC guidance, verify the machine’s hot-water and heated-dry or sanitizing settings, and confirm that the parts are dishwasher-safe.

A simple daily routine

  1. Wash your hands and clear a clean work area.
  2. Take the bottle completely apart immediately after feeding.
  3. Wash every part in hot, soapy water with dedicated brushes.
  4. Rinse, inspect, and place the clean parts in your chosen treatment method.
  5. For NHS boiling, keep everything under water for at least 10 minutes; for CDC US boiling, boil for 5 minutes after cleaning. For a cold-water solution, keep items submerged for at least 30 minutes under NHS guidance and replace the solution every 24 hours.
  6. Remove parts with clean hands or sterile tongs, following the relevant instructions.
  7. Assemble promptly or air-dry completely and store in a clean, protected place.
  8. Before the next use, check that no part is cracked, warped, blocked, or improperly fitted.

For the full UK method, see the NHS sterilising baby bottles guidance. For the US cleaning, sanitizing, and storage process, see the CDC infant-feeding guidance and its frequently asked questions.
