Wash your hands and work surface, scrub every bottle and part with hot, soapy water using dedicated brushes, rinse, inspect for damage, and then follow either the boiling, steam, or cold-water instructions that apply in your country and to your equipment.
Those methods are not interchangeable recipes. UK National Health Service (NHS) guidance says to boil suitable equipment for at least 10 minutes, steam it according to the sterilizer maker’s instructions, or soak it in a correctly prepared solution for at least 30 minutes. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance describes boiling for 5 minutes as a sanitizing option. Keep the jurisdiction and the product instructions attached to the timing you use.

What sterilizing baby bottles involves
Milk residue can remain in bottle threads, valves, teat holes and other narrow parts even when a bottle looks clean. Sterilizing (called “sanitizing” in the CDC’s US household guidance) is an additional germ-removal step after washing. Washing alone is not sterilizing, and a dishwasher that cleans feeding equipment does not automatically sterilize it under NHS guidance.

Prepare bottles before any sterilizing method
1. Wash your hands and the work area
Wash your hands before disassembling or cleaning feeding equipment. Clear and clean the sink, counter or basin where you will wash and handle the parts. Keeping the area free of food residue and clutter reduces the chance that clean equipment touches a contaminated surface.
2. Take every part apart
Separate the bottle, collar or ring, teat, cap, valve, anti-colic tube and any other removable component. Germs and milk can remain where parts overlap. Keep the pieces together as a set so that a small valve or ring is not lost during washing.
3. Scrub with hot, soapy water
Use a clean, dedicated bottle brush for the bottle interior and a small teat brush for the inside of teat holes where appropriate. Work the brush through threads, shoulders, valves and seams. Do not rely on a quick rinse: soap and mechanical brushing remove milk film that could shield microorganisms during the next step.

4. Rinse and inspect
Rinse all soap away with clean water. Look for clouding, cracks, splits, sticky surfaces, stretched teat holes, damaged valves or worn seals. Replace a part if the maker says it is no longer safe or if damage could trap residue or alter feeding flow. Confirm that every piece is compatible with the selected heat or chemical method.
A dishwasher may clean feeding equipment, but NHS guidance says it does not sterilize it. If you use a dishwasher for washing, still apply the sterilizing or sanitizing step recommended for your situation.
Method comparison at a glance
| Method | Guidance and timing | What you need to manage | Main cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boiling | NHS: boil equipment that is safe to boil for at least 10 minutes, with every item submerged. CDC US sanitizing guidance: boil disassembled items for 5 minutes. | A saucepan, enough water to cover all parts, a timer and a safe way to remove hot items. | Use only boil-safe parts. Hot water and pans burn. NHS warns that boiling can damage teats sooner. |
| Steam | Use an electric or microwave steam sterilizer exactly as its manufacturer specifies. No single cycle time applies to every model. | The correct sterilizer, loading arrangement, water amount, power or microwave settings and cooling procedure for that model. | Follow both the sterilizer and feeding-equipment instructions. NHS Best Start guidance says bottle and teat openings should face down. |
| Cold-water solution | NHS: prepare the solution as labeled, remove trapped air, keep items submerged and soak for at least 30 minutes; replace solution every 24 hours. | Approved solution or tablets, the correct water volume, a clean container, a floating cover or plunger and a timer. | Concentration, contact time and safe handling come from the product label. Any part above the liquid or containing an air bubble is not following the NHS procedure. |
These instructions describe practical household procedures, not head-to-head efficacy trials. The cited NHS and CDC pages do not establish that one method is universally more effective than the others.
How to sterilize by boiling
Use the timing for your guidance
Under the NHS method, boil suitable equipment for at least 10 minutes. The CDC’s US page gives 5 minutes for boiling as a sanitizing option. Do not combine those numbers or present one as a universal rule. If local public-health advice, a clinician or the equipment maker specifies a different procedure, follow that applicable instruction.

Boiling steps
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the bottle, teat, collar, cap, valve and other parts are rated for boiling. Separate any item whose instructions prohibit boiling.
- Fill a clean saucepan. Use enough water to cover every part completely. Place disassembled items in the pan so they remain below the water rather than floating at the surface.
- Bring the water to a full boil. Start the timer only when the water is boiling and all parts are submerged. Add a heat-safe cover if appropriate for your pan, while keeping the contents below the water.
- Maintain the required time. Keep every item under the water for the full local instruction: at least 10 minutes for the cited NHS procedure or 5 minutes for the cited CDC US sanitizing procedure.
- Turn off the heat and handle carefully. Steam, pan walls and water can cause burns. Use clean tongs if your local instructions call for them, and keep your hands away from hot surfaces.
- Protect the clean parts. Leave equipment in the covered pan until needed when that is practical under NHS advice, or transfer it with clean tongs to a protected area following CDC storage guidance.
Boiling problems to watch for
- Teat wear: Repeated boiling can damage teats sooner. Check for splits, tackiness, enlargement of the hole or a changed shape before use.
- Partial submersion: A floating cap or teat is outside the NHS procedure. Rearrange the load or use more water so every item stays below the surface.
- Material mismatch: Do not assume every plastic, silicone component, printed bottle or valve is boil-safe. The product instructions decide.
- Burn risk: Keep the pan away from children, use stable cookware and allow hot parts to cool before assembly.
How to sterilize with steam
Choose the correct type of steam equipment
Steam sterilizers may be electric or microwave-operated. Their water volume, rack position, cycle, cooling time and maximum load differ by model. NHS guidance emphasizes that there are several types of sterilizers and says, “It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, as there are several different types of sterilisers.” Do not substitute a generic cycle time for the manual’s procedure.
Steam steps
- Read both sets of instructions. Check that each bottle and component is approved for steam and that the sterilizer accepts its size and material.
- Wash and rinse first. Steam is not a replacement for removing milk residue with hot, soapy water and brushes.
- Add exactly the specified water. Too little water may prevent the designed steam cycle; too much can interfere with operation. Use the volume and measuring method in the device manual.
- Load disassembled parts. Follow the rack diagram. NHS Best Start guidance says bottle and teat openings should face down, allowing steam to reach the inside surfaces.
- Close and run the specified cycle. Use the model’s electrical setting or microwave power and time. Do not invent a universal duration, and do not open the unit early unless the manual permits it.
- Allow safe cooling and storage. Steam and hot condensate burn. Keep the lid closed or leave parts inside as the manufacturer and local guidance direct until you are ready to assemble them.
Steam-specific failures
- Incorrect orientation: An upside-down or nested part may block steam. Recheck the loading diagram and the NHS opening-down instruction.
- Overloading: Crowding can stop steam reaching all surfaces. Use the stated capacity rather than forcing an extra bottle into the rack.
- Microwave mismatch: A microwave sterilizer’s instructions may specify power, timing and a cooling interval. Another model’s settings are not a safe substitute.
- Dry operation: Never run an electric steam unit without the specified water. Stop and follow the manual if a warning light, unusual smell or empty-reservoir alert appears.
How to use a cold-water sterilizing solution
Prepare the solution
Use a solution or tablet intended for infant feeding equipment and follow its label for water volume, dose, mixing and safe handling. The label controls concentration; do not make a stronger or weaker mixture to “speed up” the process.
NHS cold-water procedure
- Use a clean, suitable container. It must be large enough for all disassembled parts and easy to keep covered.
- Mix the solution as labeled. Add the specified amount of product to the specified amount of water. Keep the container away from children and food while it is in use.
- Submerge every part. Put bottles, teats, rings, caps, valves and tubes under the liquid. Squeeze or tilt parts as needed to release trapped air bubbles.
- Hold items below the surface. Use the solution’s floating cover or a clean plunger, as appropriate, so no part rises above the liquid.
- Soak for at least 30 minutes. Start timing after the equipment is fully immersed and air-free. Do not remove pieces early.
- Replace the solution every 24 hours. Discard the old mixture and prepare fresh solution according to the label, even if the container still looks clear.
- Remove without contaminating. Follow the product’s instructions for draining or handling. Wash your hands first and avoid touching bottle interiors, teat surfaces or other parts that contact milk.
Common cold-water mistakes
- Air pockets: A bubble inside a teat or valve leaves that area outside the solution. Reposition and squeeze the part until the bubble is gone.
- Floating components: A lid or cover that fails to hold pieces down means the required contact has not occurred. Correct the load before starting the timer.
- Old solution: Mark the preparation time so the 24-hour replacement deadline is not missed.
- Unapproved containers or chemicals: Use only the product and container combination described by the manufacturer; household disinfectants are not a substitute.
Handling and storing equipment after sterilizing
Clean handling is part of the procedure. Wash your hands before opening a sterilizer, pan or solution container. Keep equipment in the sterilizer or covered pan until needed when that is practical under NHS advice. For boiled items, CDC guidance describes removing them with clean tongs and air-drying them in a protected area. Follow the local method’s instructions rather than transferring wet parts to an exposed towel or crowded counter.

How often to sterilize: NHS and CDC advice are different
UK NHS position
NHS guidance says to sterilize feeding equipment until the baby is at least 12 months old. That is a UK recommendation and should not be presented as a worldwide age rule.
US CDC position
The CDC uses the term “sanitize” for this household extra-germ-removal step. It says daily sanitizing may not be necessary for older, healthy babies when feeding items are carefully cleaned after every use. The CDC particularly emphasizes daily sanitizing when a baby is younger than 2 months, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system.

How to apply the difference
Use the recommendation from the public-health authority that governs your care, and ask your baby’s clinician when the child was premature, medically vulnerable or has a weakened immune system. Do not merge the NHS 12-month advice with the CDC’s risk-based US advice into a single universal schedule.
Choosing a method for your household
Boiling may fit when
- You have a stable heat source and a saucepan large enough to keep every approved part submerged.
- You want a method that does not require a dedicated sterilizer.
- You can safely manage hot pans and accept that teats may wear sooner.
Steam may fit when
- Your bottles and parts are steam-compatible and you have an electric or microwave unit with clear instructions.
- You prefer a contained appliance and can follow its water, loading and cycle requirements precisely.
- You can keep the openings oriented as directed and wait for safe cooling.
Cold-water solution may fit when
- You need a method without heating equipment and can maintain the correct solution concentration.
- You can keep every component submerged and air-free for at least 30 minutes.
- You can prepare fresh solution every 24 hours and store the container safely.
Convenience does not override compatibility. The safest choice is the method that your local guidance, the bottle manufacturer and the sterilizer or solution instructions all allow you to perform correctly.

- Hands and the washing area are clean.
- Every component has been disassembled, scrubbed with hot, soapy water and rinsed.
- A bottle brush and, where needed, a small teat brush reached the inside surfaces.
- Parts were inspected and damaged items removed.
- The selected method matches the material and the local guidance.
- Boiled items stayed submerged for the correct regional time.
- Steam equipment was loaded with openings facing down where instructed and operated exactly as its manual says.
- Cold-water items were fully submerged, free of bubbles, held under the solution for at least 30 minutes and processed with solution changed every 24 hours under the NHS procedure.
- Clean parts were handled with washed hands or clean tongs and protected from contamination.
When to seek individual advice
Ask a pediatric clinician, midwife, health visitor or public-health service if your baby was born prematurely, is under 2 months old, has a weakened immune system, or has a medical condition that changes feeding hygiene. Also seek advice when the bottle, teat, valve or sterilizer manual conflicts with a general household instruction. The equipment-specific direction and the advice for your baby’s health status take priority over a generic online routine.
