Before you enter a car booked through an unfamiliar ride-hailing app, verify the vehicle, license plate and driver against the trip shown in the app. Then use the app’s trip-sharing and emergency tools, keep your phone and personal information protected, and leave the ride if anything feels unsafe. The exact controls differ by service and location, so learn them before pickup.

Start with the checks that prevent the most common mistake

A ride-hailing app can show that a driver has arrived without proving that the person waiting outside is your assigned driver. Treat the app as a source of trip information, not as a reason to skip an in-person identity check.

Uber’s official rider guidance states the core rule clearly: “Every time you take a trip with Uber, please make sure you’re getting into the right car with the right driver by matching the license plate, car make and model, and driver photo with what’s provided in your app.” This is Uber’s institutional guidance, not a guarantee that every service uses the same controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this order whenever you try a new service:

  1. Confirm the pickup point and destination in the app.
  2. Find the app’s safety, help and emergency controls before requesting the ride.
  3. Wait in a safer location until the app says the driver has arrived.
  4. Match the car and driver to the app before opening a door.
  5. Share the trip, monitor the route and keep a way to call for help.

Before requesting a ride

Install the official app and check the account

Download the service from the official app store listing or open the service’s verified website before signing in. Check that you are using the intended account and that the pickup address is correct. A pin placed on the wrong side of a large building, station or road can put you in a vulnerable waiting spot or make it harder to identify the correct vehicle.

Enter the destination before requesting the trip and review the route preview, estimated arrival and fare information the service provides. If the app supports saved places, make sure the selected address is the one you actually mean. Tell a trusted person where you expect to be picked up and dropped off when the trip is unusual, late or in an unfamiliar area.

Find the safety controls while you are calm

Open the trip screen, account menu or help area and identify the controls you would need under pressure. Labels and locations vary by app, country and service tier. Do not assume that a button described by one company exists in another app.

Control to locate What to confirm before the ride Why it matters
Emergency assistance Whether it calls the local emergency number, connects to an in-app team, or offers both You should know the fastest available route to urgent help
Trip sharing How to choose a contact and send live driver, location and arrival information A trusted person can monitor the journey without you typing updates while moving
Safety or help center Where to report a concern during and after a trip You can act quickly if the pickup, route or conduct is wrong
Call and message options Whether communication stays inside the app and what happens during an outage You can limit unnecessary exposure of your phone number

In Uber’s U.S. example, the Safety Toolkit includes emergency assistance, and trip sharing is available for trusted contacts. Other services or regions may use different names, omit a feature or connect to different emergency systems.

Set up a trusted contact or learn the sharing flow

Where the service supports it, add a trusted person before your first trip. Confirm what that person will receive and whether sharing starts automatically, requires a tap on each trip or stops when the ride ends. Uber describes trip sharing that can send a contact the driver’s details, vehicle location and estimated arrival time.

If you do not want to preselect a contact, learn how to copy or send the live trip link from the active ride screen. Tell the recipient what action you want if the route or arrival time becomes concerning; simply receiving a notification does not replace contacting emergency services when there is immediate danger.

Wait indoors and keep the phone usable

Uber’s rider tips recommend waiting indoors until the app shows that the driver has arrived. This reduces the time you spend outside with a phone visible and gives you a chance to check the vehicle from a safer position. Move to the pickup point only when you can compare the car and driver without rushing.

Keep enough battery for navigation, trip sharing and a call. A portable USB power bank is an optional preparation item if your phone battery is unreliable; it is not a safety guarantee and no particular model or price is established here.

At pickup: prove that the car and driver match

Do not board because a driver waves, calls your name or stops at the correct address. Use the information displayed in your own app as the reference.

Make the three-way match

Check Where to find it What to do
License plate Driver and vehicle details on the active trip screen Read the plate on the actual vehicle and compare every character
Vehicle make and model Trip details in the app Compare the body style, manufacturer and model, not just the color
Driver photo Driver profile shown for the trip Compare the person at the wheel with the image; allow for ordinary changes such as hair or glasses, but do not ignore a clear mismatch

If any of these details does not match, do not get in. A different plate, model or driver means you cannot verify that this is the assigned trip. Step away from the vehicle, return to an indoor or populated location and use the app’s help or reporting route.

Ask for your name without volunteering it first

Ask the driver to confirm the rider’s name, rather than announcing your name as the only check. This is an additional confirmation after you have compared the plate, vehicle and photo; it is not a substitute for those checks. Do not provide extra personal details to make a questionable pickup feel normal.

Recognize pressure as a reason to pause

You can decline a ride when the match is wrong, the driver asks you to cancel outside the app, or the interaction makes you uncomfortable. You do not owe the driver an explanation at the curb. Use the service’s in-app support or reporting path and state what did not match or what behavior concerned you. Uber says its response team follows up on reported trip-safety issues.

During the trip: stay positioned, connected and aware

Choose the safer available seat

Uber advises sitting in the back seat when possible, particularly when you are traveling alone. Buckle the seat belt before the vehicle moves. A back seat can give you more distance from the driver and an easier view of the doors, but traffic, vehicle design and the presence of other passengers may change what is practical. Choose a lawful, comfortable position and keep your belongings within reach.

Share the trip and watch the route

Send the live trip to a trusted person when the journey, time or location warrants it. Keep the active trip screen available and compare the vehicle’s movement with the route shown by the app. A turn or delay can have an ordinary explanation, such as a closure or a safer pickup path, but an unexplained diversion is a reason to ask what is happening and prepare to leave or seek help.

Do not rely on a shared ETA as proof that everything is fine. Stay attentive to where you are, especially near the destination, and keep enough battery and connectivity to contact someone.

Keep communication inside the app where possible

Use the app’s calling and messaging tools rather than exchanging personal contact details. Uber describes anonymized in-app calls and messages, but its guidance also warns that a service outage can mean phone numbers are not anonymized. Avoid sharing your home address, workplace schedule, social-media accounts or other information that the trip does not require.

If a driver asks for information unrelated to the ride, you can decline to answer. If the request is threatening, persistent or paired with a route problem, treat it as a safety concern and use the appropriate help or emergency option.

You can end a ride if you feel unsafe

Uber’s rider guidance says a passenger may end the ride at any time when feeling unsafe. Ask to be let out at a lawful, populated location when circumstances permit; do not open a door into moving traffic. Once outside, move toward a business, staffed station, hotel lobby or other public place and decide whether to contact emergency services or app support based on the immediate situation.

What to do when there is immediate danger

Use emergency services first

If you face an immediate threat, serious collision, medical emergency or other urgent danger, call the local emergency number directly if that is the fastest option. In Uber’s U.S. app, the emergency button can call 911 and display trip details. Automatic sharing of trip information with dispatchers is limited to select cities, so do not assume dispatchers receive the vehicle location without you explaining it.

Give the operator your current location, direction of travel, vehicle description and license plate if you can do so safely. Keep the line open and follow the operator’s instructions. If speaking is unsafe, use any text-to-emergency option that is officially available in your area, but do not delay a call while searching for an in-app feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the concern is serious but not yet an emergency

Use the app’s safety or help control, share the trip with a trusted person and move to a public place when practical. Describe specific facts—such as a plate mismatch, a driver who is not the profile photo, an unexplained route change or unwanted contact—rather than relying on a general statement that the ride felt strange. This gives the service a usable record while you decide whether local authorities also need to be contacted.

After the ride

Report safety issues promptly

Submit a report through the trip’s help or safety section, even if you ended the ride early or reached your destination safely. Include the trip date and time, pickup and drop-off areas, vehicle plate, driver identity shown in the app and a factual description of what happened. Uber says its safety response team operates 24/7 and follows up on reported safety issues.

Review privacy and account controls

After using a new service, open its privacy settings and review location, communication and data-sharing choices. Uber directs riders to its Privacy Center for data controls. Availability and retention choices differ by jurisdiction, so read the local explanation instead of assuming another app’s policy applies.

Remove a saved trusted contact only if you no longer want that person notified on future trips, and check that trip sharing has ended if the service leaves it active until you turn it off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to assess a new ride-hailing app before your first trip

No single safety label proves that an app is suitable for every rider or location. Compare the controls you can verify in the service’s current local documentation and in the app itself.

Question What a useful answer looks like What remains uncertain
Can I verify the driver and vehicle? The app shows a driver photo, license plate and make/model before pickup Whether the information is accurate on every trip; you still need to compare it at the curb
Can someone follow my trip? A live-sharing control sends driver, location and ETA details to a chosen contact When sharing starts, what notifications are sent and how long the link remains active
How do I summon emergency help? The app identifies the local emergency number or an emergency assistance workflow Whether trip details are automatically sent and which cities support that integration
How are incidents handled? A visible in-app safety or help route accepts reports during and after a trip Response times, investigation steps and remedies may vary by case and region
What privacy protections exist? Calls and messages can remain in the app, with documented privacy settings An outage or local configuration may change whether your phone number is anonymized

Feature availability is geographic and can change with app updates, service type or local regulation. Check the documentation for the country and city where you will actually ride, not only a general product page.

A compact decision rule for every pickup

Use the following rule before opening the door:

  • All details match: confirm the driver’s name check, enter, buckle up and share the trip if appropriate.
  • One detail is wrong: do not board; move away and contact in-app support.
  • The details match but the behavior feels threatening: decline or end the ride, move to a public place and seek help.
  • There is immediate danger: use local emergency services or the app’s emergency control if it is the fastest route.

The safest habit is not memorizing one company’s interface. It is repeating the same sequence—verify, share, monitor, protect your information and leave when necessary—while checking which parts your current app and location actually support.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
